French Marie-Claire carried a mention of Frédéric Malle Carnal Flower, a new tuberose fragrance composed by Dominique Ropion (Une Fleur de Cassie). The fragrance is supposed to feature notes of tuberose, orange blossom, coconut and camphor. Retail price is 120 € for 50 ml (thank you, I!). If it is anything like Serge Lutens Tubéreuse Criminelle, this is going to be my first fall purchase once it debuts in September.

Campaspe: Camphor?!? That does sound a bit like Criminelle, now doesn’t it? And TC has orange blossom too, doesn’t it? I am a bit flummoxed by these notes (not to mention that price tag. DH has me reading all these investment books so there is part of me that wants any new perfume over $100 to be vile, LOL). I have never been sure what causes that camphor/menthol/whatever effect in the TC opening, nothing in the notes seems to prepare you for it. I am sure you know, V.! August 12, 2005 at 1:14pm
BoisdeJasmin: Interestingly enough, natural tuberose absolute has that rubbery/camphorous effect, but it is much more subtle. I would imagine that adding some type of aromachemical to accent it would give that blast (sort of like adding hedione to accent jasmine). I wish I could say that I am not interested in it, but I am, and I can hardly wait for the release. August 12, 2005 at 1:21pm

Anya: Who chose that name? Granted, with Franco/Anglo cultural differences taken into account, it still just doesn’t seem *right* to respond when someone asks “what’s that lovely scent you’re wearing?” with Carnal Freaking Flowers.

I do hate this name and honestly could they not find anything a wee bit more subtle. Their translators need to be sacked. The French accent would suit this better I can tell you.

BoisdeJasmin: Dear N, I agree that the name is just not right. I would even prefer Fleurs Charnelles more, but then again, it is too much like Tubereuse Criminelle.
Dear J, a bit of camphor can give a nice accent to many notes, like acetone, which is used in perfumery widely. Lutens takes it to the extreme, of course. August 13, 2005 at 11:17am
