Article on Aedes in New York Times

Aedes

“Today Aedes is a bit of a cult. Not even Colette in Paris invites the same sort of breathless, wild-eyed looks,” writes Chandler Burr on one of the New York perfume meccas.

  • Laura: This was a nice article. It is great to see the ‘boys’ get more recognition (though from the sound of it, they don’t really need it ;D.) December 5, 2005 at 5:42am Reply

  • Tania: “Second Empire whorehouse” is pretty good.

I know people have reported getting chilly service from Aedes, but I’ve never run into that problem. They’ve always been generous with samples, recommendations, and conversation, and I love petting those shih tzus.

I will say that the shop is small, small, small, and when I went in there, Karl was furiously bundling up packages. He was telling me too that they get a lot of corporate orders around the holidays, with everybody ordering candles for everybody else. The fact is that you can’t get a client perfume — it’s too intimate, too difficult, a step above buying them underwear — but a candle is just right. I was tempted to buy candles for everyone I know, as a way of getting out of buying them perfume, but if I gave my mother a $55 candle she would complain that she’d prefer I just gave her the cash. 😉 December 5, 2005 at 10:48am Reply

  • Miriam: I guess Mr. Burr hasn’t discovered luckyscent yet– another place to get VIP Room. December 5, 2005 at 2:06pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: L, I agree. It is nice to read the article about the store many of us like as much as we in NYT. December 5, 2005 at 2:35pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: T, I know what you mean about candles. My mother would probably say the same thing! However, they are great gifts nevertheless, especially for people whose tastes in perfume one does not know. A pretty candle is always a nice addition to the gift basket. • Marc: This is a lovely store. The store best secret is the sales person, MIGUEL, always sweet, nice and patient.
Karl always have a sour face and bad attitude with customers. What a shame!!! his partner is much nicer. Karl should smile more, after all, life is good for AEDES. December 6, 2005 at 11:54pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Marc, I agree the store is lovely, and Miguel is always very helpful and sweet. Karl is a little bit more reserved, but he is always very kind and very professional. I have not had a bad service there. I am sorry to hear you did. December 7, 2005 at 12:04am Reply
