  • Patti: Thanks for the list, V, I’ve soaked myself in Chinatown and will take to my bed for the rest of the day. I can’t say I am surprised, but I will say I’m disappointed. April 4, 2006 at 11:06am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: I am also a bit disappointed in these results. Narciso Rodriguez EDP as the niche selection? I did agree on Prive line as the best packaging and Fracas as the Hall of Fame. I really do not understand the criteria for selections as well as I would like. April 4, 2006 at 11:27am Reply

  • Amandampc: Hi V – it’s me, Amandampc. If you go to the Fragrance Foundation website, you can view the first and second round ballots for this year’s Fragrance of the Year awards; the first round ballot includes all the nominees in each category, the second round ballot the finalists in each. The specifications for what comprises “Luxe” and “Niche” are also given. To find the ballots, click on the “FiFi Awards” tab in the bottom menu bar on the site’s home page, and then, when that page comes up, click on “Nominees for the current year” (also on a mneu bar near the bottom of the page) which will take you to a page where you can view the ballots in PDF. Just wanted to let you know in case you hadn’t seen these and wanted to get a better picture of the whole field. April 4, 2006 at 12:34pm Reply

  • Tara: I didn’t realize Armani Prive was considered a men’s line. And the choice of NR for the women’s was certainly not to my taste. Thanks for sharing the details and links! April 4, 2006 at 2:10pm Reply

  • marchlion: I find the categories more interesting than the selections, really. Also I keep reading Nouveau Niche as Nouveau Riche. Is Popular Appeal a price-point distinction? Hmmmmmm. FiFi and I have different definitions of Luxe. April 4, 2006 at 7:58pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Amanda, excellent! Thank you very much. I managed to miss this the first time around. I am off to browse. April 5, 2006 at 1:32am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Tara, interestingly enough, for the packaging design Armani Prive is treated as a feminine line. Yes, it is very exciting to anticipate the winners, but I never feel that they are that surprising in the end. Everyone I know is disappointed that Chinatown did not win anything. • BoisdeJasmin: March, then I am not only the one who is reading Nouveau Niche as Nouveau Riche. I think that you are right, Popular Appeal is basically a category for mass produced fragrances. April 5, 2006 at 1:35am Reply

  • Evan: When I saw “Coty Prestige” I kept thinking… hmm, L’Origan to Euphoria. Chypre to Stetson Black. They choose Narcisso Rodriguez, made by some Shiseido branch, as the best niche fragrance? What about Borneo 1834 from that other Shiseido outfit? Or, as mentioned above, Chinatown? And Fracas gets in the hall of fame only after she gets too much face work.

Eh, I hate awards. April 5, 2006 at 3:52am Reply

  • Judith: Re Armani Prive: I think that AP, which markets itself as unisex, was originally up in both the men’s and women’s divisions, but it won different things in each. Silly list, on the whole! April 5, 2006 at 9:39am Reply

  • Patty: So sad. I’m off to talk my bottle of chinatown off the ledge. April 5, 2006 at 12:23pm Reply

  • Katie: First and foremost, I think I have to echo what everyone and their dog is feeling: Chinatown wuz robbed!

Second, mostly I am reading this and laughing, because that line up reads a little like a list of punchlines to a perfume joke-off. I mean, frinking Euphoria – *shakes head* Sheesh.

The inclusion of Fracas makes sense to me, however, for the hall of fame. But looking at the “winners” on that list – I mean, really, what is the liklihood that any of those are ever going to make it into anyone anywhere’s hall of fame? April 5, 2006 at 8:02pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Evan, I was actually wearing vintage Emeraude today, and that is exactly what I was thinking. I do not mind Euphoria, but I cannot say that it is very daring. Again, with my work this week, I have had little time to look into the criteria for the awards. I think that the popularity is the factor to consider. April 6, 2006 at 3:19am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Judith, that makes perfect sense. Otherwise, it is rather arbitrary. April 6, 2006 at 3:20am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Patty, I agree that Chinatown should have won instead. Plus, someone made an observation that NR has already won in the past. Except that time it was the EDT. April 6, 2006 at 3:21am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Katie, “what is the likelihood that any of those are ever going to make it into anyone anywhere’s hall of fame?” Excellent point. I think that it is also a reflection of the contemporary state of affairs. Innovative large scale releases are few and far between. Maybe, it is also a reflection of the consumer tendencies to prefer the familiar. April 6, 2006 at 3:23am Reply
