  • portlandia: Hoo boy, I almost could not finish reading that list, it was so boring….I must be a real perfumista now! 😉

Seriously, there is not one on that list I would personally wear except maybe the Armani Code. When I think of all the really good stuff that’s available and people are still wearing this sort of thing….Sigh. July 25, 2006 at 2:52am Reply

  • Elle: Well, I guess it’s somewhat encouraging that #5 is on that list. Thanks for using that Romance ad – started my day laughing out loud since when I saw it I was thinking the exact same thing as Laura about Putin’s belly kiss. Suppose the man in the ad just wanted to stroke her like a kitten. Poor, clueless Putin. 🙂 July 25, 2006 at 7:12am Reply

  • Laura: Hey, the guy in the ad on the right is of the Vladimir Putin school of tummy kissing. And as for the list of most bought, the trick seems to be to slap a one word title on the bottle and then wait for the $$$ to roll in. July 25, 2006 at 5:46am Reply

  • MER: Well, it could be worse. They could all be wearing our favorite fragrances! July 25, 2006 at 11:10am Reply

  • violetnoir: Well, if you are not “into” perfume like we are, the ones listed above are easy to find. Just walk into any mall department store, and there they are.

I wonder what the top five fragrances in France are? Any ideas?

  • Robin: Cracking up at L’s “Putin school of tummy kissing”!

It is odd, I almost never smell Chanel no. 5 on anyone these days. Wonder how many of those bottles are gifts? July 25, 2006 at 12:23pm Reply

  • greeneyes: I’m surprised to see Beautiful at the top of that list. I tend to think of it as an 80s perfume…probably because that’s when I originally wore it. I received a bottle of it for my birthday a few years ago, but I could hardly stand to wear it anymore. I gave it to charity. July 25, 2006 at 9:27am Reply

  • Marina: Three cheers for good old Chanel No 5. July 25, 2006 at 9:28am Reply

  • Tania: Wow, Romance? I barely remember that one. I’m not surprised by the Lauders (the women who wear Beautiful and Pleasures will wear them until either they die or the fragrances are discontinued), Euphoria (well packaged, best-of-its-trend, sleek marketing), or No. 5, which always sells. But Romance? July 25, 2006 at 11:02am Reply

  • steve: Except for No.5, what a bore!! July 25, 2006 at 3:54pm Reply

  • moon_fish: Oh, MAN!!! :)))

I wonder who was the first – Putin`s kiss or that advertising? Is it `Great minds thinks the same` OR it just something strange in the air?

As for the lists – well, lucky americans! You are wearing your own country-made perfumery (except Armani and Chanel which are not-so-bad additions to hygienic and clear US perfumery) – in Russia things are much worse…
We are wearing Boss, Lacoste and Dolce&Gabbana (I mean the lists, too) in common, and some Chanel and Mugler to follow French style. July 26, 2006 at 3:41am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Portlandia, I am impressed to see Beautiful on the list, but one has to admit that most of the fragrances mentioned at least have character. Of course, given the nature of these statistics, it would be impossible to find a niche fragrance leading the pack. July 30, 2006 at 10:08am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Laura, thank you for making me laugh out loud! July 30, 2006 at 10:08am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Elle, the girl in the ad does not look particularly thrilled! July 30, 2006 at 10:09am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Greeneyes, I tried it recently, and while I could not see myself wearing it, Beautiful is undeniably interesting. A Lauder take on Chanel No 19, in a sense. July 30, 2006 at 10:10am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Marina, yes, it seems to be a constant best seller. Amazing really! July 30, 2006 at 10:11am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Tania, I got a sample of Romance the other day. I will have to research it further. 🙂 July 30, 2006 at 10:11am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: MER, that is another way of looking at it. July 30, 2006 at 10:12am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: R, the stats are just based on the sales figures. I do not smell No. 5 often either. July 30, 2006 at 10:20am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Steve, well, No. 5 always saves the day. 🙂 July 30, 2006 at 10:21am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Sergej, great observation! It is true, the list is dominated by the American brands. Although Euphoria does not strike me as particularly American, I must say. July 30, 2006 at 10:22am Reply
