New Fragrances : Chanel, Givenchy and More

It looks to be a busy fall in terms of new fragrances! Chanel is preparing to launch a new fragrance called Chanel No 5 Eau Premiere, which “will incorporate all of No.5’s original ingredients–including rose absolute, jasmine, neroli and ylang-ylang–but rebalanced in a lighter, airier formula by Jacques Polge.”

Givenchy will follow the recent trend of dipping into the archives by relaunching Eau de Givenchy, Givenchy III, Le De, Monsieur and Eau de Vetyver. L’Interdit will also be a part of this collection.

In other news, we are to anticipate a new launch from Prada called Infusion d’Iris as well as from Marc Jacobs called Modern Gardenia. There will also be a release from Judith Leiber in September. “The eponymous scent, featuring Italian bergamot as well as jasmine and rose notes, was created by Karine Dubreil of Mane and was inspired by Leiber’s new fine jewelry line.” Tom Ford For Men, Tom Ford Voile de Fleur, Guerlain My Insolence, Dior Midnight Poison, Emporio Armani Diamonds, Emilio Pucci Vivara, Acqua di Parma Colonia Intensa, Monique Lhuillier, Banana Republic Malachite and Cordovan, Jo Malone White Jasmine and Mint, and Thierry Mugler La Part des Anges are among other fragrances to be launched in the fall. • Ina: Wow! Super thrilled about the Givenchy reissues! Of course, you never know if they’ll be anything like the originals. There seems to be a slight infatuation with iris these days, don’t you think? Amusing. 🙂 Very curious about the new Thierry Mugler and am chuckling at My Insolence.
P.S. I need to call you soon! May 24, 2007 at 11:55pm Reply

  • Benvenuta: Midnight Poison. *rolleyes* What`s next, Hypnotic Charm? I`m amazed at such creativity.

Let`s hope Chanel No 5 Eau Premiere will be something as nice as Shalimar Light.

I`ll forgive Guerlain for My Insolence only if it won`t contain that terrible red fruit note. May 25, 2007 at 5:22am Reply

  • Tigs: Do you know, V, if the Givenchy Eau de Vetyver is “the” vetiver, that Luca Turin proclaimed to be generally acknowledged by experts to be the best? I’ve kind of been wondering whether that was going to be re-released… May 25, 2007 at 9:48am Reply

  • Tigs: Hi, V, my first comment disappeared! Just wondering if the Givenchy Eau de Vetyver is “the” vetiver mentioned by Luca Turin, which he said had been generally acknowledged as the best, before it was discontinued? May 25, 2007 at 9:52am Reply

  • Marina: Very exciting about the Givenchy re-launches! Not so exciting about Chanel No 5 Eau Premiere (lighter, airier No 5? what’s the point?) or My Insolence. Tom Ford Voile de Fleur sounds particularly appealing. May 25, 2007 at 8:17am Reply

  • Karin: Hey, Hypnotic Charm sounds like a good name…

I like #5 in dry oil and is it voile? Long time since I’ve looked at my bottle. I might like this version. I’m not real fond of #5 on me. May 25, 2007 at 12:20pm Reply

Don’t you think half of it is the name. I thought Tom Ford Voile de Fleur sounded good too. Voile de Fleur sounds even better.

  • k-amber: A few days ago, I got an ad from a department store saying re-launches of Nina Ricci’s Coeur-Joie, Cappicci and ohters, all perfumes with Lalique bottles. Re-issues are booms?? I am not a fan of Nina Ricci line never the less I am intrigued with those trends.

    Have a nice weekend.

  • Judith: Looking forward to the Givenchys–esp. the Vetiver.

Oy, the names! Howzabout Miss Poison Cherie! Or Poison Ivy (I might actually buy this one, but I guess it wouldn’t be wise for a perfume company). May 26, 2007 at 7:10am Reply

  • Tigs: Bela, well I didn’t say it, Luca did! I’ve never tried it. I think he meant it was acknowledged amoung those in the industry, not consumers. He did write, however, that Guerlain was tied for the best alternative, in the absence of the Givenchy. May 26, 2007 at 11:18am Reply

  • Bela: I don’t know about Givenchy VĂ©tiver being ‘generally acknowledged as the best’: I was always told, when I lived in France, that Guerlain VĂ©tiver was the best there was. Certainly, several extremely elegant French women I know (two of them very good friends of mine) have worn it exclusively for nigh on 40 years. May 26, 2007 at 8:37am Reply

  • Tigs: Well, V, I certainly prefer the Guerlain, as well. Interestingly, he doesn’t mention what “style” the Givenchy is in – this was from the “Grass Roots” post, right? I wonder whether it will be a “true” vetiver, a la Vetiver Extraordinaire, or a more embellished, like Annick Goutal’s or Serge’s for example? May 27, 2007 at 12:03pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Ina, iris is a note that immediately can lend a fragrance that refined, elegant quality. I do not mind this infatuation.

I would say that the formulas will be tweaked. Many of the materials used in the 1950s-60s (and even as far as a few years ago) are no longer allowed to be used. May 27, 2007 at 10:59am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: B, if they smell great, I do not mind the names, but yes, too many flankers can really dilute the appeal of the original for me. May 27, 2007 at 11:02am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Marina, I liked some of the recent variations on No 5, so I am quite curious about No 5 Eau Premiere. Not sure how it can improve on the original, but it could be very interesting. May 27, 2007 at 11:03am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Tigs, yes, it is the one he was talking about. I have never smelled, but I am curious. Of course, not sure how it can be even better than the stellar Guerlain Vetiver, but it could be something very interesting. May 27, 2007 at 11:04am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Karin, I wear all versions. I grew also fond of No 5 Elixir. Very pretty. May 27, 2007 at 11:05am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Kaori, I think that these fragrances are sold at Harrods right now. I only have the vintage bottles of them, not anything recent. I just checked Nina Ricci website, and you can read about them on it. May 27, 2007 at 11:07am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Be beautiful, yes, she is gorgeous. May 27, 2007 at 11:16am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Judith, I am with you on Poison Ivy! Not sure if it would ever make it past the marketing department though. 🙂 May 27, 2007 at 11:18am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: J, I cannot agree more–Guerlain Vetiver is often consider to be the gold standard for vetivers. Although I will not claim to have tried all of the vetivers out there, it is one of my own favourites. May 27, 2007 at 11:25am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: E, I remember that article. Here is the quote: “Experts agree that the best classical vetiver of all time was Givenchy’s, which never sold well but was kept in production because Hubert de Givenchy wore it. When he passed away, so did the fragrance. Next best was a tie between the strikingly fresh and carefree Carven and the excellent, darker and richer Guerlain.” Although I must say that I did not care that much for Carven. It struck me as pale and thin. Perhaps, whatever I tried was already tweaked. May 27, 2007 at 11:27am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: E, I think that it is a classical one, like Guerlain. I’ve always wondered what exactly made Givenchy’s more outstanding. Perhaps, Luca or someone who has tried it could tell us. I would also be curious to know how the reissue would compare to the original. May 27, 2007 at 12:18pm Reply

  • Kebabette: Thank you so much, you have made my day. L’Interdit was my all time fave. Then one day years ago I bought yet another new bottle and it didn’t smell the same. I talked with the saleswoman and I think she thought I was mad … and then I found out yes, it had been reformulated.

Do you have any more information on the original L’Interdit’s revival? June 29, 2007 at 1:38am Reply

  • Mark: HI, my wife always wore the original L’interdit, but I have been unable to find the original since the new issue, which does not compare. It is our 10th Wedding Anniversary this year and I would love to suprise her with a bottle of the original – even if it is part of a gift set. Can you confirm that this collection is the original and available to buy? Thanks MG July 2, 2007 at 7:36am Reply

  • Belle de Crecy: I was shocked when I read Dr. Turin’s comment about Hubert de Givenchy. As far as I know, he is still very much alive! M. Turin really should correct this. Perhaps it was a error in translation.

At any rate-I’m yearning to smell the original Le De and L’interdit. I’m a huge Givency/Hepburn fan as well as a fan of powdery frargances. July 17, 2007 at 10:41pm Reply
