Fueguia: Bottling Scents of Argentina

“With the unexpected aroma of melting ice caps filling my nostrils, I inhale deeply. Frozen mountains exhale an earthy scent, and in the distance, Andean condors fly. “Can you feel that?” he asks, taking the sample away so that I open my eyes. “That’s our ‘Lago Del Desierto’ fragrance. We’ve recreated the smell of the glaciers and the surrounding countryside of Argentine Patagonia.”

An interesting article from The Argentina Independent about Fueguia perfume laboratory, an outfit recreating the scents of Argentina. Thanks to Sian for a link!

  • Musette: I have no idea what that actually smells like…but the idea of it just sounds……lovely. Imagining what it would be like to have El O say something like that about a scent – or an experience.

Then I nearly spit out my tea, imagining El O saying something like that! His eyes would pop right out of his head! LOL!

  • Victoria: LOL!

Yes, I also like the way it sounds. I’ve never been to Argentina, but I would love to visit, if only to smell what he is describing. March 9, 2012 at 4:50pm Reply

  • Anita Monroe: I remember the wonderful smell of icehouses when people were still using large blocks of ice for refrigeration. I imagine that is the scent of icebergs, and it is quite nice and refreshing. If you have ever chipped a block of ice to put in an ice cream churn, you know that fragrance too. • Victoria: I wasn't able to find, but I'm going to check with Luckyscent. They are usually picking up these unusual lines. March 12, 2012 at 10:51am Reply

Here it’s a link of Fueguia’s Facebook page.

  • Kate: I live in Buenos Aires and agree that the store, the unusual fragrances and the design of the candles and packaging is absolutely beautiful. I’ve bought several of these candles as wedding presents because they make such beautiful gifts, and recently bought two for myself – Conquista (pine trees) and Pulperia (paper and leather). Both smell absolutely fantastic and look gorgeous with their red glass, handwritten labels and wooden lids, but I would like to warn everyone that they are absolutely dreadful as candles. The wax is so soft and oily that the candles do not burn evenly. In fact if you pour it on your skin and let it set, it does not even behave like typical candle wax – it leaves a huge amount of oily residue – I expect due to the perfume content. The problem is that this composition does not work well for a candle. They burn only down the centre core of the candle, so the wick continually burns itself out drowning in the melted wax. Even with a little manual help, to manipulate the wax around the edges, the candle still cannot burn and I’m rather frustrated with trying to relight it only for it to burn out a while later. I’m a huge collector of candles – I particularly love Diptyque and was sure these Fueguia candles would be my new favourite but I have never found a candle that can’t be ‘saved’. They are gorgeous, but they are inherently flawed as products, and now I feel like I’m left with some rather beautiful ‘decoration only’ candles. For candles that burn, I’d recommend sticking to what you know. If you’re really really keen on buying some I can tell you that Fueguia is planning to open a store in London. I only hope you don’t share in my frustrations. December 31, 2012 at 12:20pm Reply
