grain de musc: I must say that once again, I’m baffled by the luxe and nouveau niche categories. How did Boss, Oscar de la Renta and Givenchy end up in the latter? Why is Sweet Redemption in both the men’s and women’s nouveau niche? In fact, why is there a nouveau niche and not an “ancien” niche? Why is Un Jardin sur le toit considered a masculine? Where did Dior Addict to Life pop up from? And surely no one actually called a fragrance Original Penguin? What’s next? Debonair Polar Bear? Macho Moose? Sultry Seal?
So many questions — I’m not expecting you to answer! April 12, 2012 at 4:35pm
Victoria: Debonair Polar Bear sounds great! Someone must use this name! And Sultry Seal too.
I have no idea about the names for the categories, but they are defined by the number of doors–how many stores sell them in the US. The brand can submit their products in any category they want. Perhaps, Hermes considers its perfume unisex, so they submitted it as masculine (and possibly as a feminine too, but it didn’t make the semi-finalist list). Ditto by Kilian. April 12, 2012 at 4:58pm
behemot: I am all confused. April 12, 2012 at 8:19pm
Victoria: The way I look at it–Bottega Veneta made it in, so did Tom Ford Violet Blonde and by Kilian Sweet Redemption (and a few other favorites). So, I have a few to root for. Let’s see which one wins! April 12, 2012 at 8:30pm
Natalie: I was also fairly confused. It seems like a bestseller list rather than a merit list, with the same names recycled in categories, seemingly at random. For example, why wasn’t Burberry Body nominated for packaging, and why was it nominated for its media campaign? I see no rationale there. Bizarre. April 15, 2012 at 12:12pm
Victoria: The way the nominations work is that a company submits its own products in whatever category it wants. So, if Burberry thinks that Body is a better fit for the Media campaign, then that’s where they submit it. Same thing with what Denyse commented on above–if Hermes thinks that Un Jardin Sur le Toit is a unisex scent, then it can submit it as both masculine and feminine. The FiFi judges don’t make a decision on that point.
But as for your point that it is a best seller list, I agree! April 15, 2012 at 12:20pm
Holly Loves Swift: So, can we vote? Because I really want to vote for Wonderstruck by Taylor Swift because it smells and looks amazing but I can’t see anywhere where I would vote. May 4, 2012 at 8:53pm
