Serge Lutens : From Childhood to Now

Would you guess that this boy with a head full of tight curls is our Uncle Serge? At first, I had a hard time seeing the resemblance between this boy and the Serge Lutens I know from current photographs. But as I looked closer, I recognized the same intensity in his gaze. You can see more photographs of Lutens at different stages of his life in Le Monde’s feature La Vie en Images de Serge Lutens. The captions are in French, but the photos speak for themselves.

    • Victoria: My pleasure, Nancy! He’s so sweet in this photo. The other pictures are great too, especially Lutens’s own photographs. May 15, 2012 at 6:53pm Reply

  • neil chapman: I was overly cynical about Mr Lutens for a very long time, until I fell head over heels with so many of the scents that I realized all of, or at least most of, the hype was justified! Cedre is the only time I have behaved like a cat with catnip, and used up literally a fifth of a bottle in some kind of auto-erotic bonanza where I was dipping my pajama-strings into that cow-pat tuberose frenzy of the opening notes and losing my mind (shame it just fades to a generic amber but anyway….); Borneo is my holy grail, perhaps (though I remix it myself by adding a particular patchouli essential oil I like to get it to the exact patchouli/cacao ratio I want….dangerous, and so so extravagant remixing your own perfumes…so naughty, and if you get it wrong, so devastating but anyway, it does NEED just that little bit (or in my case, quite a lot) more patchouli to take it away from that faux-emeraude quality); LOUVE, which I have forced (in tiny amounts) onto my cat – watch me get expelled from this site but the animal activists but she smells utterly amazing in it – just on the top of the neck!- even better than on my own cashmere scarf ( I LOVE Louve, and feel she has been so unfairly maligned): and Daim Blond, which smells oh so lovely on my sister…there are so many. • Victoria: Ok, I’m coming home and wearing Cedre! Your description is hard to resist. 🙂 May 16, 2012 at 6:15pm Reply

  • neil chapman: Thank the heavens for someone so genuinely passionate; snobbish; outrageous; and refined. May 16, 2012 at 11:35am Reply

  • neil chapman: Obviously the snobbish part was referring to Lutens! The way you pipped me to the post there makes it look like I was describing you! May 17, 2012 at 10:23am Reply

    • Victoria: No worries, I didn’t think that. May 17, 2012 at 10:47am Reply
