Arquiste Boutonniere no.7 : New Perfume

Arquiste Parfumeur is launching its 7th fragrance Boutonniere no.7 in November 2012. Created by perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux, it is a masculine rendition of a gardenia blossom.

“May 1899, Foyer of the Opéra-Comique, Paris

During the Opera’s intermission, a group of seven young men gather at the Grand Foyer in search of new flirtations. Women of all sorts are lured in by the crisp, green scent of the men’s gardenia boutonnieres, enlivened with the bergamot and lavender colognes they wear. As they draw closer, the “Opera Flower” exudes its elegant masculinity, the last breath of a bloom sacrificed on a black-tie lapel.”

The notes of Boutonniere no. 7 include lavender, bergamot, Italian mandarin, gardenia jasminoides/gardenia citriodora duo, genet absolute, vetiver, oak moss. The perfume will also be available as part of a limited-edition deluxe set, which includes a one-of-a-kind boutonniere and cufflinks. In collaboration with men’s fine jewelry creators M. de Phocas, Arquiste created a special gardenia stick-pin boutonniere, as well as a pair of silk knot cufflinks.

$175; 55 ml Eau de Parfum; $195 Deluxe Limited Edition w/ Boutonniere by M. de Phocas. Arquiste fragrances are available at Barneys New York stores, The Webster (Miami), A’maree’s (Newport Beach), Aedes de Venustas (New York), La Petite Parfumerie (Excelsior, Minneapolis), Saks Fifth Avenue Mexico (Mexico City), Parfümerie Osswald (Zurich, Switzerland), Liberty and Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie at Harrods (London, United Kingdom), L’Eclaireur & Jovoy, Paris, France.

  • Amer: There are some scents in the plant world that make you think that are intented to turn your nose in a polinator. I always thought the scent of gardenia to be irresistible and found it to be a complete perfume on its own. It hits you with green and astringent notes then morphs into silk and velvet to later leave you with ambery and earthy memories as it fades. However, as lovely as I find it, it is one of those odors that when I immerse myself into, I end up with a headache (god knows why). I always dreamt of a masculine gardenia perfume (I know Neil Morris has one I haven’t tried yet) but never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it would be considered a classical scent for a man. History can be so avant garde!!! Given the quality of their previous releases (even some that at first sounded boring like the gourmant Anima Dulcis) I am sure this rendition is going to be true to the charm of the real flower and far away from the many cloying and flat gardenias that litter the shelves of functional products. Can I find a sample of it now? September 20, 2012 at 9:25am Reply

    • Victoria: I think that it’s released around November or so, and I would imagine that the samples might become available at that time as well.

I look forward to smelling it. I love the idea of a floral note rendered in a masculine way. Like some of these:

      • Amer: The one I really wanted to try from these is Lalique’s. However around the time it came out it wasn’t available anywhere in my country (it might still not be as Lalique has a limited distribution). I will however look it up. Thanks for reminding me.

Looking at the list I realize I never thought of lavender and iris as floral. :O
I put each in a category of its own September 22, 2012 at 2:11pm Reply

        • Victoria: If you want an exact categorisation used by most perfumers, lavender is a herbal aromatic note (but absolute and a different animal) and iris is a floral violet note. The floral violet group includes many not so obviously floral notes. But you can interpret any note in a floral manner, which is what my examples do. Since most so-called iris perfumes use violet aroma-materials, one might as well call them violets! September 22, 2012 at 3:29pm Reply

  • Nikki: I love the little historical description of the Opera…! Gardenia is such a great scent! Gardenia our homme, why not. Would love to try it! September 20, 2012 at 12:34pm Reply

    • Victoria: I enjoy the whole Arquiste line, so I’m looking forward to smelling this perfume. September 22, 2012 at 4:41am Reply

  • Emma: Gardenia for men, good for them! I just got Lutens gardenia Une Voix Noire, it’s pretty feminine and I love it! You can read my review on makeupalley – highmaintenancegirl September 20, 2012 at 4:42pm Reply

    • Victoria: Off to read it, Emma! Thanks. September 22, 2012 at 4:41am Reply

  • kuri: would love to sniff this! I’m always looking for a good gardenia. September 21, 2012 at 12:00am Reply

    • Victoria: Me too! Those are rare to find, since most perfume gardenias don’t even smell remotely like the flower. September 22, 2012 at 4:40am Reply

  • civava: I already have Arquiste on my must try list for Animal Dulcis. Unfortunately I havn’t had the opportunity to try it yet. And wouldn’t mind at all to try this one too. September 21, 2012 at 2:37am Reply

    • Victoria: Anima Dulcis is addictive, I’m looking forward to wearing it in the winter. September 22, 2012 at 4:40am Reply

  • bluegardenia: Wow, what a beautiful idea for a masculine fragrance. I will be sniffing this one and may need to buy it for my dad!
(Also so excited for Une Voix Noire – Is this a Paris exclusive?) September 24, 2012 at 4:06am Reply

  • Amina: I recently had a chance to preview this fragrance and it is absolutely beautiful and elegant. The lavender gives the gardenia a silky, watery affect. Like Gardenia that is whipped across the face by a strong cool wind. Its masculine but not by very much. A great and innovative interpretation of gardenia. October 25, 2012 at 2:03pm Reply
