Autumn-Winter Perfume Trends

Perfumer and Flavorist Magazine published an interesting overview of the autumn-winter  fragrance trends. Analyzed by  Seven Scent Ltd, a trend agency based in Manchester, United Kingdom), this biannual fine fragrance forecast looks at what might influence the launches a year ahead–the 2013/14 autumn-winter collections.

  • “Tea accords: a move away from the classic or traditional green tea accords, towards a more unusual, sophisticated and rich fragrance
  • Wood accords: the rich spice of oud is softened in a partnership with rose; a classic marriage of materials from middle eastern perfumery
  • Leathers and suede: evoking a timeless elegance and quality in masculine scents
  • Spices: such as cardamom, cumin and saffron inspired by the Middle East
  • Amber: versatile and popular, it adds warmth and blends with oriental spices as well as soft musky notes
  • Red berries: rich and dark notes will deliver an autumnal feel”

Nevertheless, it’s easy enough to find new perfumes that fit many of these categories: Tom Ford Jardin Noir seriesDiptyque Volutes, Serge Lutens Une Voix Noire, Chanel Coco Noir, to name a few.

  • Nick: I wouldn’t mind seeing more black tea and leather perfumes! September 25, 2012 at 7:19am Reply

    • Victoria: Me neither! I love those notes. September 25, 2012 at 10:28am Reply

      • Daisy: I second that! Tea and leather, whoo-hoo! September 30, 2012 at 10:40am Reply

  • Barbara: What a yummy photo! Those glazed pastries look scrumptuous.
And yay for more spices, more amber and more leather. I ordered a sample of Lumiere Blanche and I’m enjoying the cardamom notes in it. Thanks to you, V! September 25, 2012 at 9:13am Reply

    • Victoria: Thank you, Barbara. You know, those are little candy containers, not pastries. But aren’t they lovely?

I’m very happy to hear that you’re enjoying Lumiere Blanche! September 25, 2012 at 10:31am Reply

      • Jack Sullivan: Add me to the club! I received my sample set last week and tried both Lumière Blanche and Autoportrait over the week-end. Both are lovely, in different ways: LB plays on the contrast between cool citrus and warm spices (I didn’t get much of the almond and musk on my skin) whereas the balm/vetiver combination of A feels like a walk through a pine forest in the dusk, with the smell of resin in the air. Both are free of any obvious gender orientation although some might think Autoportrait to smell more masculine. These are rather discreet, low-key fragrances that warrant the use of the full sample in one go, but they reward you with a feeling of complete serenity. September 26, 2012 at 3:24am Reply

        • Victoria: That’s such a great way to describe the whole collection–discreet and serene. I’m enjoying the line very much. Just bought a bottle of LB for my mom to surprise her when she comes to visit me. September 26, 2012 at 10:11am Reply

  • Lucas: I love so many of those notes that will be in style this autumn/winter season. It’s gonna be a wonderful time to my nose.

Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme, Histoires de Parfums L’Olympia Music-Hall Le Parfum and many many more – I could have them all. September 25, 2012 at 9:59am Reply

    • Victoria: I would also add Ann Gerard Cuir de Nacre to your list–iris and leather, so beautiful. September 25, 2012 at 10:32am Reply

      • Lucas: Sounds interesting. I’ve never heard of Ann Gerard scents. I wonder where I can get some… September 25, 2012 at 1:58pm Reply

        • Victoria: They’ve just been released in France, so I think that they will slowly make their way to the other countries. September 25, 2012 at 2:35pm Reply

        • Jack Sullivan: Lucas, you should use the contact form on Ann Gérard’s website. I did last week because I could not find her fragrances on her French retailer’s (Jovoy) online shop, and was too impatient to wait after Denyse’s preview on Grain de Musc.
Much to my surprise, Mrs Gérard herself replied and proposed to send me the “Kit découverte” (all three perfumes in 9ml bottles) in exchange for a wire transfer corresponding to the price of the kit + shipping cost.
I don’t know whether she would agree to do the same for you, but surely it can’t hurt to try? September 26, 2012 at 3:42am Reply

          • Lucas: Thanks Jack for sharing this information. How big costs did that generate in your case? September 26, 2012 at 4:10am Reply

            • Natalie: Hi Lucas,
Same happened to me. I’m in Europe, so I didn’t want to order the Kit découverte from luckyscent because then I would have to pay duties, them being in the US. So I did what Jack did and contacted Ann through her website. The Kit is now on its way to me. She askes approx. 55E for the kit, delivery included. Postal charges depend on your location I imagine. By all means, mail her, I would say. September 26, 2012 at 6:47am Reply

            • Jack Sullivan: The kit is 48 euros and she charged 7 euros for shipping (I live in France), so based on Natalie’s post below I assume it won’t me much more expensive for you. September 26, 2012 at 7:03am Reply

              • Lucas: Natalie, Jack thanks for coming back to me and providing this information. I wish I could get a 1ml samples of each before I decide to buy this set of 3 x 9ml but maybe I’ll order it one day.

At the moment I’ve got other expenses queued but I bet ann Gerard perfume won’t run away from me 😉 September 26, 2012 at 7:20am Reply

  • silverdust: Wood accords, cardamom, saffron, leather, suede: YAY!

This sounds like my ultimate perfume season. September 25, 2012 at 10:33am Reply

    • Victoria: Somehow now I’m craving a cardamom tea perfume! 🙂 September 25, 2012 at 12:44pm Reply

  • gio: That’s gonna be a wonderful perfume season. I love all those notes! September 25, 2012 at 12:18pm Reply

    • Victoria: I also hope that they will be featured in something other than fruity patchouli scents. And I agree with you, these notes sounds so good. September 25, 2012 at 12:45pm Reply

  • Nancy A.: The visuals of all those confections enhanced one of my favorite times of the year and what’s to come in the way of fragrance. September 25, 2012 at 12:48pm Reply

    • Victoria: The window display was so beautiful! I also loved how they added the golden leaves to create a seasonal theme. September 25, 2012 at 2:33pm Reply

  • Amer: The change of weather means the awakening of my sweet tooth. I feel like eating my computer screen with that picture on it! :S
Scent wise I also revisit some old sweet favorites like Dior Homme that seems to have a love affair with autumnal weather conditions. September 25, 2012 at 12:58pm Reply

    • Victoria: Iris-leather perfumes seem particularly suited to the season to me. Chanel Cuir de Russie is in heavy rotation these days. And yes, I love Dior Homme too and also Divine L’Homme de Coeur. September 25, 2012 at 2:34pm Reply

  • Dubaiscents: Black Saffron by Byredo would fit in here as well (can’t wait to smell it). I would have to agree with all of these as current trends and I am very happy about it! September 25, 2012 at 3:28pm Reply

    • Victoria: I’m generally not a fan of Byredo, but Black Saffron sounds wonderful! Would love to hear what you think when you get to try it. September 25, 2012 at 4:06pm Reply

  • Alyssa: Wow. Crossing my fingers that the berries don’t predominate and that the rest of these notes aren’t cleaned and photoshopped into oblivion. Maybe Bulgari will relaunch Black! September 25, 2012 at 7:59pm Reply

    • Victoria: I hope so too! And Bulgari Black relaunch (but no reformulation, I hope!) would be such a great event. September 26, 2012 at 10:11am Reply

  • mysterious_scent: Big Yes to wood accords, cardamom, saffron and tea accords. Big NO to cumin, which is my killer note September 26, 2012 at 4:33am Reply

    • Victoria: Cumin seems to be such a controversial note for many, and I can see why! It’s so animalic. While I’m not as sensitive to it as you, I still don’t like too much of it either. September 26, 2012 at 10:12am Reply

  • Kalli: Amber is my fave note all year round..but esp. in the fall/winter. Must De Cartier, the Prada, Ramon Monegal…all great.

Cinnamon is great too! Bring on Poison and Musc Ravageur! lol. I also love some Ineke scents for spice and warmth. Yum. Gotta love orientals! September 30, 2012 at 12:07am Reply
