Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity at The Metropolitan Museum

From February 26 to May  27, 2013, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will present its new exhibit, Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity This exhibit was unveiled at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris last year, and I highly recommend this beautifully curated look at the role of fashion in the works of the Impressionists and their contemporaries. The exhibit is complemented by masculine and feminine costumes, period photographs, illustrations, and rare Guerlain perfume bottles*. It truly gives you a unique glimpse into late nineteenth-century Parisian life and society.

Highlights of the exhibition include Monet’s Luncheon on the Grass (1865–66) and Women in the Garden (1866), Bartholomé’s In the Conservatory(circa 1881, paired with the sitter’s dress), Monet’s Camille (1866), Renoir’s Lise–The Woman with the Umbrella (1867), Manet’s La Parisienne (circa 1875), and much more.

To find out more, please check the Met website.

Update: the exhibit will also travel to the Art Institute of Chicago, where it will be shown at Regenstein Hall from June 26 to September 22, 2013.

  • Jenna: Lucky New Yorkers! Do you know if the exhibit might come to London? February 12, 2013 at 10:48am Reply

    • Victoria: I’m not really sure, but I hope that it might. The exhibit in Paris was fantastic, so I completely agree with you, lucky New Yorkers! I would love to see it again. February 12, 2013 at 11:06am Reply

      • Daisy: Yes, we are very lucky 🙂 But so are you in Europe for getting all the new launches first! February 18, 2013 at 7:48pm Reply

        • Victoria: I’ll trade the new launches for more great exhibits anytime! 😉 February 19, 2013 at 12:22pm Reply

  • Rachel: Thank you very much for sharing, V! I’m going to be in NYC in March, and hopefully I can go to see it. Monet’s Luncheon on the Grass is one of my favorite paintings ever. February 12, 2013 at 11:32am Reply

    • Victoria: I love that painting too, although I believe it was the first time I saw it. Manet’s more provocative one is another favorite.

Definitely try to visit the exhibit during your NYC trip. It’s impressive. February 12, 2013 at 11:59am Reply

  • Elizabeth: I will definitely be going to this exhibit! I have an irrational love for the 19th century: its fashion. art, and music. It’s a pity that we won’t be able to smell the contemporary Guerlains there, too. Perhaps I’ll just wear Jicky. February 12, 2013 at 12:23pm Reply

    • Victoria: I do too! And I will add literature and dance to your list. I really wish they had a scented component to this exhibit, because it add another layer. But it was fun enough to see those gorgeous Guerlain bottles. February 12, 2013 at 2:42pm Reply

      • nastja: Elizabeth, you can smell the vintage Jicky at the Museum of Art and Design exhibit, though! The whole line-up kicks off with it.

Can’t wait for the exhibit. Seems curators are doing more and more of these culture of an era kind of shows. I like the wholistic approach a lot and have high hopes for this one. February 12, 2013 at 6:56pm Reply

        • Victoria: I do too. It really sets the artists’ work in context. You leave with such a richer understanding of how they worked and what inspired them. And to see the actual dresses next to the paintings–the same dresses worn by the models!–was a special treat. February 13, 2013 at 3:55am Reply

  • Austenfan: When was this exhibit in the Musée d’Orsay? I saw the Degas one in June, I am assuming it came after Degas.

It sounds gorgeous but NYC is a bit too far, even for some lovely paintings.

I love the new photo in your introduction to yourself. Very appropriate for a fragrance blog! February 12, 2013 at 2:20pm Reply

    • Victoria: I saw it sometime in September, and it looks like it ran till January 20th. Here is a great review in the Telegraph:

Thank you! The old one was already 2 years old, so it was time to update it. 🙂 February 12, 2013 at 2:41pm Reply

      • Austenfan: Thanks for the link. It seems a lovely exhibition; the Musée d’Orsay is worth a visit anyway. I may want to get my hands on the catalogue someday. February 12, 2013 at 3:54pm Reply

        • Victoria: I now regret not picking up a catalogue, because it was definitely excellent. But my bag was already bulging with books, and I still had several more stops to make. February 12, 2013 at 4:37pm Reply

  • Rose D: I was just reading about this event on the American Vogue! Too bad I cannot make it to New York 🙁 February 12, 2013 at 3:19pm Reply

    • Victoria: It’s too bad we’re far away. February 12, 2013 at 4:37pm Reply

  • Andrea: Ohhh, thank you for writing about this. I will be in NYC in May, and now I know at least one place I will be visiting! I love the picture you chose to post. I chose to frame some lovely Impressionist prints for my daughter’s room when she was little, and when she was 2 years old, she could name many Impressionist painters/paintings. It remains a love for us both! I’ll have to show her this posting… February 12, 2013 at 3:55pm Reply

    • Victoria: Perfect timing for you then! As I was saying to Austenfan just now, the catalogue for this exhibit is fantastic. Please don’t make my mistake–be sure to pick up a copy. February 12, 2013 at 4:38pm Reply

      • Andrea: After I saw your posting, I went through my mail, and saw the Met Store catalog! On page 6, they sell the catalog you mention! It is 336 pages with 250 color illustrations, available in hardcover for $65 or paper for $40. There is also a lovely train case with 40 notecards inside (4 each of 5 paintings in the exhibition). I may just order the catalog beforehand, as it would be heavy to tote back with me. At any rate, if you’d like to order the Catalog, now is your chance!:-). International Delivery mentions to call this number for rates and info: 1-800-662-3397. Hope that helps! And the picture you feature above IS featured in the notecards. I may have to order that, too!:-) February 13, 2013 at 12:02am Reply

        • Victoria: Thank you so much! I will ask my mom to pick it up (the international shipping + customs fees might end up more than the price of the catalogue). The notecards were nicely done, and yes, this painting is prominently displayed. I stood admiring it for a long time and I myself felt transported to that garden. February 13, 2013 at 3:53am Reply

  • Lynn Morgan: How I wish I could go! I am already saving my pennies for a pilgrimmage to the Met when the JAR (Joel Arthur Rosenthal) jewelry show goes up! He is also a perfumer… I wonder if the exhibit will be scented, as Diana Vreeland’s Met costume shows were? February 15, 2013 at 5:50pm Reply

  • Victoria: I so love this style of painting………I am so enjoying your website. You create on this website what is in my heart. I have decided to start a Fragrance Journal after reading your posts and seeing all of the lovely things here. I was blessed to visit many times by telephone with Annette Green, past president of the Fragrance Fountain in America. Blessings to you and all. February 15, 2013 at 7:49pm Reply

    • Victoria: The Fragrance Foundation. oops February 15, 2013 at 7:50pm Reply
