Le Labo Lys 41, Ylang 49, and Limette 37 : New Perfumes

Le Labo is introducing two new fragrances as part of their Classic Collection, Lys 41 and Ylang 49, and a new San Francisco city exclusive, Limette 37Lys 41 was created by Daphné Bugey, the same perfumer who worked on Neroli 36, Bergamote 22, and Rose 31 for Le Labo.  Lys 41 features notes of lily, jasmine, tuberose absolute, woods, vanilla, tiare, “sunny notes”, and musk.

Ylang 49 is classified as a floral chypre. Its author is Frank Voekl, who worked previously on Baie Rose 26, Santal 33, Iris 39, and Musc 25. It lists notes of ylang-ylang, gardenia, patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver, benzoin, and sandalwood.

Both fragrances will be available at Le Labo stores, counters and directly at their website starting of June 2013. 50ml/$145; 100ml/$220, other sizes and body products are also offered.

Another new launch from Le Labo is Limette 37, a  San Francisco city exclusive. It will be sold at the San Francisco Le Labo counters.

“Don’t expect Le Labo’s San Francisco exclusive to be a chilly summer fog essence or the Golden Gate in a bottle.
Limette 37’s reference to The City is abstract and delves into its olfactive construction that mimics the hilly ride from Le Labo’s Fillmore street store to the bay… Limette 37 is an olfactive roller coaster, mingling an impression of cleanliness, freshness and well-being with that definite feeling that you are smelling special.”

Limette 37 includes notes of bergamot, jasmine, petitgrain, clove, vetiver, tonka bean, and musks.

  • theperfumeddandy: Dear Victoria
It’s undoubtedly the Ylang 49 that excites most interest from The Dandy.
Could it just be possible that along with colognes chypres could be making a comeback?
    One does heartily hope so.
Roll on Summer and the roll out says I.

    • Victoria: It sounds very interesting! I also like the idea of chypre and floral, especially with an ylang-ylang theme. May 13, 2013 at 8:31am Reply

  • Lucas: My perfume radar has just turned red! I’m looking forward to trying all three although this might be a problem for me since we don’t have a Le Labo stockist in Poland, not to mention that San Francisco is like “the end of the world” for me. May 13, 2013 at 11:22am Reply

    • Victoria: I know exactly how you feel! 🙂 May 13, 2013 at 1:08pm Reply

  • Cait: Hmm, they told me in Venice Le Labo that the SF frag was going to be saffron. Limette sounds rather blah, though I do love citrus. Maybe I’ll love it. Doesn’t sound super evocative of the city, my city. May 13, 2013 at 12:37pm Reply

    • Victoria: I also would expect something a bit more vivacious than lime for San Francisco. But on the other hand, you can do interesting things with lime too, and they’re promising “an olfactive roller coaster.” I would love to hear what you think of it, Cait. May 13, 2013 at 1:10pm Reply

  • Vanessa: Victoria,

I just moved to NYC a little over a week ago and it so happens that I live right around the corner from the Nolita Le Labo boutique. It so happens that I popped into the boutique yesterday afternoon and smelled their perfumes for the first time..I had recently asked for a recommendation on the ‘May Showers’ post and nobody suggested anything by Le Labo for me but I still wanted to pop in and see if I would find anything. While some of the fragrances were interesting, I didn’t find anything to my taste. I am looking forward to sampling Lys and Ylang once they hit stores, though! They sound like they might be up my alley.

I hope that you review them!! May 13, 2013 at 5:10pm Reply

    • Victoria: I’m curious about them too, but like you, I haven’t had good luck with Le Labo perfumes. Some of them are very nice, but for the price, you can find other alternatives or else they just don’t grab me enough. May 14, 2013 at 3:44am Reply

  • Joanna: Lys and Ylang are intriguing. But that description for the SF scent is a little lackluster. Nevertheless, I’m looking forward to trying it next time I’m in the city. May 13, 2013 at 5:16pm Reply

    • Victoria: Doesn’t grab me either. But I would love to hear what others think when they try it. May 14, 2013 at 3:44am Reply

  • Ashley: I live in SF and was really looking forward to our city exclusive, but I’m a little dissapointed that it’s going to be a “fresh” scent. Even in the summer, San Francisco weather mainly in the stays within the sixties and so I dont really have a need to many of these types of scents. I wish they would have done a “chilly summer fog essence” as that would have been something I could have actually worn throughout the year. Im still going to try it though, maybe it really will be a roller coaster and I’ll be pleasantly surprised (: May 14, 2013 at 1:43am Reply

    • Victoria: I’ve spent a lot of time in the city, and I agree with you, Ashley. So far, Parfums DelRae Amoureuse is my own San Francisco in the bottle. May 14, 2013 at 4:00am Reply

  • Annikky: I like the description of Ylang and Lys, but I haven’t really had much luck with Le Labo. Even the notes I like somehow do not work for me in their compositions, so I’m not getting my hopes up. I would be glad to be proven wrong, though, there aren’t enough chypres and lily scents out there. May 14, 2013 at 3:11am Reply

    • Victoria: That’s true. There can always be more lilies and chypres! May 14, 2013 at 4:00am Reply

  • annemariec: Somehow in my mind the Le Labo signature accord reads as ‘weird musty’. I’ve tried many of them now but the only two I like, and I REALLY like them, are Patchouli (24 is it?) and that ol’ stand by, Rose 31. I’ll be interested to find out how ‘weird musty’ translates into the Lys and Ylang.

I’ve only taken Patchouli 24 for an airing out of the house once, and loved it. It lasted, needless to say, ALL DAY. I share an office with a colleague with whom I do not get on so well and I rather feared she would not like the perfume, which I think had been whipped up and sent around the room by the rather aggressive air conditioning we have. She came in and wondered aloud where the smell of incense was coming from. As I don’t detect incense in P24 I was nonplussed, but after a second or she decided it must be the the coffee I had bought. I mumbled something in agreement and shrunk down behind my computer, but actually, I think she did actually like the scent. May 14, 2013 at 7:24am Reply

    • Victoria: I’m now intrigued by the weird musty note, and if I had my Le Labo samples around I would try them to look for it. 🙂 May 14, 2013 at 12:20pm Reply

  • Ilia: Oh Labo! Well at least ehre in London we’ll have the chance to try Lys 41 and Ylang 49. On the one hand I feel lucky that I have access to their Poivre 23 anytime I want, but on the other hand, they broke my heart when they discontinued Aldehyde 44 before I had the chance to buy it. May 15, 2013 at 5:46am Reply

    • Victoria: I also loved Aldehyde 44, and I miss it. It was the only Le Labo I was tempted to buy. May 19, 2013 at 12:40am Reply

  • JCParodi: I’ve become OBSESSED with the city Exclusives 🙁
I’ve wanted to visit San Francisco for a while, Limette 37 might just get me there.
Lys 41 sounds very feminine, However, Ylang 49 sounds very unisex…..I wonder. May 15, 2013 at 11:42pm Reply

    • Victoria: Wow, impressive! I can’t wait to hear what you think then. May 19, 2013 at 12:37am Reply

  • Elly: I just got back from smelling Limette 37. My first impression was that it was just “all right”. It was big on the lime at first, but as it sat on the skin, the lime toned down and the other notes came in and definitely it ‘warmed’ up, though it’s still a citrus frag to the end I think. I would say that I prefer it over *all* the other frags with citrus (Bergamote, Neroli, Jasmin, Fleur d’Oranger). I’ve also gotten obsessed with the City Exclusives! I agree with annemariec that a lot of their frags have a certain ‘fuzziness’ (weird musty, as annemariec calls it) that I don’t particularly like, but Limette 37 seems to not that it, or at least not enough to bother me. Yay! My first post (thought I’ve been a follower for a while). May 17, 2013 at 10:29pm Reply

    • Victoria: Elly, thank you for letting us know what it’s like. Doesn’t sound terribly exciting, especially for such a vibrant city. I doubt I get to smell it, so I enjoy hearing your thoughts. May 19, 2013 at 12:36am Reply

      • Elly: I would gladly send you a sample I got for you to review. May 26, 2013 at 9:53pm Reply

        • Victoria: Elly, thank you so much for your kind offer. Another friend was kind enough to share, so I got to try it.
Overall, I agree with you that it’s unexciting. Or at least, not as interesting as I would imagine for such a vibrant city as San Francisco. Not much of a roller coaster ride there either. May 27, 2013 at 6:42am Reply

          • Elly: I finally got a chance to smell the classic Dior Eau Sauvage, and I love it! It actually reminded me a lot of Limette 37, a bright citrus plus warm spices/woods from the clove and vetiver. (Hopefully this comparison isn’t blasphemous…) I wonder if you or anyone else got that as well? June 4, 2013 at 9:13pm Reply

            • Victoria: I can totally see that! Just less basil and spicy herbs, maybe. Eh, nice enough, but for the price, I would rather go with something else. June 5, 2013 at 11:23am Reply
