From Jicky to Petite Robe Noire : Guerlain-Osmotheque Event

On Saturday, April 11th, the perfume conservatory Osmothèque and Guerlain will present a new lecture on the history of this venerable French house. Titled “From Jicky to Petite Robe Noire”, the event will cover Guerlain’s masterpieces and legacies. The session will be presented by Guerlain’s Sylvaine Delacourte and Osmothèque’s Patricia de Nicolaï. If you’re close to Versailles, it’s a wonderful opportunity to learn about French perfumery tradition from experts close to the source.

  • angeldiva: Hi Victoria,
I could weep with inspiration! Firstly, because I want so much to live in France. This is a stellar sounding perfume experience! And, on that day my dear angel dad would have turned 96. He looked like a cross between Ronald Coleman, and Gregory Peck! I put his 4 girlfriends in the same limo at his funeral, and they all got along!
But, I digress. A special blessing for a wonderful and safe journey for all who are going to attend.
Someday, when the details of my world are more peaceful, I pray I will get to enjoy a scent-o-rama trip to Versailles, myself!

        • Annie O: I love hearing about your Da and his ladies! The image of them in the limo together made getting up this morning well worth while!
He must have been a lovely man!

    • Victoria: I hope that you will visit and get to smell all of the Osmotheque treasures!

Your father really was such a character. 🙂 March 24, 2015 at 1:50pm Reply

      • angeldiva: Oh, thank-you all for your kind words about my dear Da. So hard to believe that it’s been two and a half years…
I didn’t think he would last eight weeks without my Mom- but he lasted eight years! After the first year I encouraged him to socialize with all the church ladies, and senior citizen center ladies, and neighbor ladies who liked him. He was sooo shy …until he was in his late 70’s. Helping him pick out his clothes for a date was so sweet. He’d be nervous, but happy. He drove his Caddy until he was 89, had the manners of Rhett Butler, and always picked up the check!
So, these gals made him enjoy his life more. Then when he got the hang of it he had a unique attitude. Sort of like, if a lady was polite and presentable- there was always room for another one!
And, one was older, he called her his ,”Cougar!” Even though he didn’t believe in hanky panky outside of marriage, he didn’t object if they kissed him good-bye! March 24, 2015 at 5:53pm Reply

        • Tasha: Love hearing about your dad, brightened my evening. 🙂 March 25, 2015 at 1:17am Reply

          • angeldiva: Tasha, thank-you for your kind words. Growing up my Da wore the popular drug store scents of the 1960’s.
            Aqua Velva
            Skin Bracer
            Old Spice
            Skin Jammer
            Hai Karate
            Brut
            Mennen
            Mitchum
Even if he purchased scents at the 99cent store -they would smell pleasant. After his stroke, I looked for some of these old after shaves, and found almost all of them! I think that by having myself and the caregivers apply these scents gave him a lift. Male vanity never really fades!

  • Karen: What a fascinating event this will be! I wish I could attend, as Guerlain has such a history and so many of their perfumes are drop-dead gorgeous. Looking forward to a report if someone attending will post! March 24, 2015 at 8:14am Reply

    • Victoria: Meanwhile, their Champs Elysees boutique allows one to smell their vintages. Unfortunately, they can’t be purchased, but at least, you can find out what Ode or Cachet Jaune were like. March 24, 2015 at 1:52pm Reply

  • spe: Most of my favorite Guerlains are d/c: Philtre d’ Amour, Vetiver pour Elle, Mitsouko Fleur de Lotus (ltd edition), Plus que Jamais, and Tokyo (although the new, blue aqua allegoria smells identical to Tokyo). Many of the Guerlains smell and feel too sweet to me, although I do wear Chamade and L’Heure Bleue occasionally. I’d like to hear about the history, but if that’s not possible, I’m fine with it. • Victoria: I don’t remember some of those you mentioned, but I really liked Vetiver Pour Elle. Why on earth did they discontinue it? March 24, 2015 at 1:53pm Reply

  • Lynne: What fun that would be!! (although, it’s in French, right?) I have and love almost every recent Guerlain and a few yesteryears. 🙂 March 24, 2015 at 9:25am Reply

    • Victoria: Yes, I imagine it’s in French, but you get a chance to smell their classics too, so that’s a big plus. March 24, 2015 at 1:54pm Reply

  • Nancy A.: At least some things don’t change and that’s the tried and true House of Guerlain. Vive la France and their creations. March 24, 2015 at 12:41pm Reply

    • Victoria: Guerlain’s fragrances have changed quite a bit, but on the positive side, the reformulations have been done really well. I wear and enjoy the new version of Mitsouko very much. March 24, 2015 at 1:57pm Reply

  • Mare: This sounds like it will be a wonderful event to attend! March 24, 2015 at 12:56pm Reply

    • Victoria: The Osmotheque usually does a great job hosting these kind of educational events. March 24, 2015 at 1:56pm Reply

  • maja: Oh, wow, wish I were closer! Guerlain is such a wonderful house. I tried Rose Barbare yesterday for the first time and I believe it is just the perfect rose chypre. Simply stunning. And I love Osmothque and what they are doing. Last year in Milan at the perfume exhibition you could smell a lot of discontinued scents from small vials at their stand. Such a treat. • Anastasia: This sounds like an amazing experience!! Lily can’t wait to hear about your experience.

I’ve fallen in love with Guerlain fragrances…although I prefer spicy scents I recently purchased Nahema the most beautiful rose scent I have ever smelled. I think what Tuberose is to Fracas, Nahema is to Rose. And Samsara..

One day I hope to see France… March 24, 2015 at 7:49pm Reply

    • Victoria: Nahema is one of my favorites too. It was a huge flop for Guerlain when it was first launched, proving that not everything becomes loved overnight. I’m glad that the house kept it against all odds. March 25, 2015 at 7:18am Reply

  • ceebee_eebee: Do you know if these are going to be a regular thing? I’m planning to be in Paris in Oct/Nov and would KILL to attend a Guerlain event. March 30, 2015 at 9:47pm Reply

  • Alvin: Hi Victoria,

I’ve been reading your blog for a while (since last year, when I became a confirmed fragrance fiend!). Really excited to hear about this event – if only I could attend! Guerlain is a really amazing house and I have a lot of love and respect for their creations!

    Regards,
