Top 10 Summer Picnic Scents

Elisa takes us on a picnic with her selection of favorite summer perfumes.

When thinking about my seasonal favorites, I always create a kind of moodboard in my mind. This summer, the moodboard says PICNIC. I’m picturing a gingham tablecloth or a worn-in patchwork blanket thrown out on the grass, sunlight dappling through leaves, bare feet and painted toes. You can smell sunscreen and blooming linden trees, and, of course, the spread: rosé and sparkling wine, cheese and crackers, something fresh (might I suggest caprese skewers?), a giant bowl of fruit salad (my friend Sommer makes an amazing one with blueberries, watermelon, and halved cherries).

Here are some summer favorites to match my picnic mood.

Demeter Tomato

What is there to say about Demeter Tomato, except that it smells exactly like tomato vines? Just smelling it seems to conjure up actual heat, like you’re standing in a sunny garden. In truth I almost never wear it, but I often spray it into the air, especially in my kitchen, to build summery picnic ambiance.

Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune

Every time I wear Pamplelune, I’m amazed at its perfection. A good grapefruit scent is easy; you can find it in hand soap. But Pamplelune transcends the genre with surprising depth and structure – the contrast between pith-and-peel bitterness and sweet woody vanilla reminds me of a great floriental.

Moschino Funny!

Whereas Pamplelune is relatively “dark” and earthy, Funny! is a crisp, translucent take on grapefruit, with tart berries and peony and a certain effervescence that reminds me of mimosas (perfect picnic drink, by the way). It just smells happy.

L’Artisan Caligna

I ignored Caligna when it came out, but recently my friend Alyssa has been raving about it, so I ordered a mini. I’d classify this firmly in the “breath of fresh air” category – it’s a sunny, herbal, cologne-style fig.

Yves Rocher Monoi Eau des Vahines

Don’t doubt my commitment to coconut scents; I once reviewed 21 of them. I’m picky, however, and loathe a bad coconut. Yves Rocher Monoi is both a good coconut and a cheap one, all the better for spraying everywhere on hot days – this is another one I also enjoy as room spray. It smells like tropical suntan oil (I want to say it smells like having a tan, not that I would know) and the burnt edges of coconut cookies.

L’Artisan La Chasse aux Papillons

The park where I usually picnic is full of linden trees, and every year I look forward to their blossoming – but they haven’t yet! So I’m getting my fix with La Chasse aux Papillons, a pretty, gauzy white floral with an appreciable linden note, which is warm and yellow-green, somewhere between honeysuckle and jasmine.

Diptyque L’Ombre dans l’Eau

How is it that I’ve never included L’Ombre dans l’Eau in a summer list before, when I love it so much? I love the sharpness of the leafy, vegetal green top notes and the seamless transition, like a dissolve shot in film, to a hot-pink “rose” accord that is 80% blackcurrant.

Annick Goutal Rose Splendide

Rose Splendide smells to me like rose vinegar. (Does that exist? I bet it would be delicious.) I crave this sweet-and-sour rose most often in spring, but it’s also perfectly fitting for an alfresco lunch.

Smell Bent Fashiony

This is my wildcard pick: It’s meant to smell like the inside of a handbag (suede, lipstick, etc.), but what it actually smells like to me is oud by way of cherry snowcone syrup.

Tom Ford Orchid Soleil

I love that Tom Ford’s more affordable perfumes tend to be the weirdo, divisive, seemingly unsellable ones. Orchid Soleil is a lush, attention-seeking tuberose/gardenia that opens with a flash of greenhouse and then succumbs to a giant butter note – close up it smells like butter melting on white rice. In the far drydown, it’s more vanilla buttercream on coconut cake, but still with a hint of tiare. It is both very floral and very foody – what could be more picnic?

What perfumes would you wear on a picnic?

  • Kathleen: I would wear Annick Goutal Eau de Camille or Diptyque Philosykos. They smell summery to me. June 23, 2017 at 8:33am Reply

    • Elisa: Philosykos is perfect in summer. It doesn’t last on me but it’s great while it lasts! June 23, 2017 at 9:13am Reply

  • rosarita: Lovely choices! My neighbor has a linden tree that’s very close to my porch, where we live in the summer, and there are these puffs of fragrance through the open windows that I look forward to every year. To my fictional picnic, very much like your description, I would wear Zoologist Hummingbird; in reality, it’s Cutter Deep Woods insect repellent, sadly enough. Mosquitoes, deerflies, you name it, all attack me as soon as I step outside in the summer. That’s why most of my summer picnics take place on the aforementioned closed in porch. June 23, 2017 at 8:43am Reply

    • Elisa: Mosquitoes always seem to go for me too! June 23, 2017 at 9:14am Reply

    • Kari: Hummingbird is a perfect summer picnic fragrance! June 23, 2017 at 6:53pm Reply

      • Elisa: Lots of votes for Hummingbird! June 25, 2017 at 8:59am Reply

  • spe: This is an under-represented category in my collection! But I do have O de Lancôme, which I think is perfect for a picnic. Maybe Cristalle EDT as well. Your question makes me realize I strongly favor refined floral blends and am lacking for more casual options. Thank you! Somewhere I read one of the Krigler fragrances (rarely written about on blogs) is a linden scent. I’m now motivated to order a sample. June 23, 2017 at 9:46am Reply

    • Elisa: Anything citrusy or green would be welcome at my picnic 🙂 June 23, 2017 at 9:48am Reply

      • Alicia: Citrus; an excellent idea. I like their fragrance in all their guises, and they have a superb advantage. Most insects, including mosquitoes, dislike citrus. I went to the subtropical Iguazu Falls a few years ago. I wore Eau Sauvage, O de Lancome, Orange Vert, and Pamplelune. Never had a problem. True, I sprayed them several times a day, abundantly. Finished several bottles, enjoyed the marvelous beauty of the place with its unique flora and fauna, and never had an insect bite. June 23, 2017 at 10:05am Reply

        • Elisa: Smart!! A rose with a lot of citronella in it might work too 🙂 June 23, 2017 at 10:09am Reply

        • spe: Great perfume story and one I’ll reference if the derogatory”bug spray” phrase is uttered. June 23, 2017 at 1:27pm Reply

  • Mara: The ideal scent for a picnic is (also)
“Poirier D’Un Soir”m by Miller Harris (Eau de Parfum):
“[…] inspired by the contrasting flavors and complex aromas of a ripe pear and its delectable possibilities. A combination of fresh Italian bergamot, pear macerating in dark rhum extract, black current and tagette introduce a glimpse of warmth and a touch of caramelized sugar. A rich heart of spice, Turkish rose, peony and birch tar oil leave a smoky and earthy core signature. Shadows of top and heart dry down to a smooth base of ambrette seed, white cedar wood and cashmere wood […]”. June 23, 2017 at 9:56am Reply

    • Elisa: Mmm! That sounds delicious June 23, 2017 at 10:05am Reply

  • briony: I’m off on a picnic tomorrow so I’m thinking about what perfume to wear already. I’m planning to wear Penhaligon’s Ostara (now annoyingly discontinued), Fils de Dieu or maybe Chanel Beige. June 23, 2017 at 10:00am Reply

    • Elisa: Ostara is already discontinued?? I’m surprised — I thought it was quite popular. June 23, 2017 at 10:05am Reply

      • briony: Yes unfortunately. They discontinued it quite early although it’s still available at various places online. The SA I spoke to when I bought mine said she thought there was some problem with copyright, although I’ve heard nothing about this since. Others have suggested they had difficulty getting hold of the raw ingredients or that it simply wasn’t popular enough. June 23, 2017 at 10:25am Reply

  • Monica: I have so many picnic favorites: Chanel Cristalle, Demeter Green Tea, Byredo Pulp, L’Artisan Figuier Extreme, Berdoues Assam of India, Profumum Acqua di Sale, O de Lancome, Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine, EL Bronze Goddess. June 23, 2017 at 10:07am Reply

    • Elisa: I love your choices! I just slipped a roller ball of Bronze Goddess in my bag to carry with me, since I’m dealing with humid weather and my perfume is wearing off earlier in the day. June 23, 2017 at 10:10am Reply

    • AndreaR: I’ll happily second L’Artisan Premier Figuier Extreme and add Annick Goutal’s Eau du Sud and Patricia de Nicolai’s Eau d’Ete, plus a blast from my Southern California past, Jean Nate. June 23, 2017 at 6:38pm Reply

      • Elisa: Nicolai has so many good summer scents! June 24, 2017 at 9:34am Reply

  • Karen 5.0: I LOVE both Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune and L’Artisan La Chasse aux Papillons.

May I suggest Nest’s Verde for a picnic perfume? It is a less expensive, but still beautifully green (fern, vetiver, verbenum, cedar) alternative to Tom Ford’s gorgeous (but pricey) Vert de Fleur. June 23, 2017 at 10:09am Reply

    • Elisa: I will definitely give that a try! Might have to swing by Sephora later… June 23, 2017 at 10:11am Reply

  • Tijana: Great topic, thank you!!!! For me it would be Bobbi Brown Beach, Guerlain Herba Fresca (looooove that mint), the new Light Blue from D&G, all of the Hermes Un Jardin fragrances, and Hermes Santal Massoia.

I made a note to try Yves Rocher Monoi Eau des Vahines – I used to use their Monoi body oil and loved it!!! June 23, 2017 at 10:09am Reply

    • Elisa: What is the new Light Blue like?

I would love to have the YR in an oil! I like to glisten a little in summer. June 23, 2017 at 10:12am Reply

      • Tijana: It’s similar to the original but a bit more intense for sure. I actually like it better because it’s muskier and I love musk. June 23, 2017 at 1:44pm Reply

    • Gabriela: Just tried it, great! 40% discount here in Barcelona, 16 euros, a bargain! June 23, 2017 at 1:19pm Reply

  • Sandra: Great List, I was say Tebbe de Soirée is on my list as Ari’s passionfruit
    Gallop for Rose and leather
    Heure Exquise also

I think I will have a Songes summer, since I have been wearing that a lot June 23, 2017 at 10:12am Reply

    • Sandra: Tenue , darn autocorrect June 23, 2017 at 10:13am Reply

    • Elisa: I wore Heure Exquise a ton this spring. Songes is wonderful — some day I hope to come into a bottle. June 23, 2017 at 10:15am Reply

  • Michaela: I love your descriptions of perfumes. I also like Pamplelune very much and Funny is… well.. funny!
This summer I wore Annick Goutal Le Chevrefeuille in generous amounts. Never failed to make me feel at ease. Probably my first picnic choice. The second one would be Gucci Envy.
Now I have to try caprese skewers, thank you! June 23, 2017 at 10:29am Reply

    • Elisa: Thank you!

I wore Envy last week. I love how NEON green it smells! June 23, 2017 at 11:00am Reply

  • Priscilla E.: I love this list, because I have several of those fragrances named. In fact I am wearing Tomato today. I also like it because all of them are affordable. June 23, 2017 at 10:35am Reply

    • Elisa: Maybe I lean toward affordable fragrances in summer because I end up spraying more lavishly! June 23, 2017 at 11:01am Reply

  • Hayley: What a wonderful picture. I would wear Parfumerie Generale Bois Blond, Diptyque Eau des Sens, or Histoire de Parfum Azemour Les Orangers.. and of course Temps d’Une Fete. Something like Jo Malone Mimosa & Cardamom would be great too. You got me dreaming 🙂 June 23, 2017 at 10:55am Reply

    • Elisa: I love the picture too. (It’s Victoria’s handiwork!) June 23, 2017 at 11:02am Reply

  • Amalia: Wonderful article and I love Guerlain Pamplelune! It brings life and happiness to the mornings, like waking me up! Linden tree… a beauty and the dried leaves and blossoms makes also a wonderful, calming tea. We call this Tilio in Greece and treats also babies colics. June 23, 2017 at 11:44am Reply

    • Elisa: I’m wearing Pamplelune today! And thank you for teaching me a bit of Greek 🙂 June 23, 2017 at 1:41pm Reply

  • Maria: Sisley Eau de Campagne, Anne Gerard Perle de Mousse or Monsillage Eau de Celery would be perfect for me also 🙂 June 23, 2017 at 11:57am Reply

    • Elisa: Good note on the celery — I was trying to think of more vegetal scents! June 23, 2017 at 1:42pm Reply

      • Maria: I really like Eau de céleri for a picnic mood on spring and early summer. It starts as a very green celery that slowly unfolds into jasmine and ends as a green and elegant chypre. For hotter days I prefer the tomato leaves note on Eau de campagne. Perle de mousse, is my romantic picnic parfum. June 23, 2017 at 11:08pm Reply

  • sara: Great thread! I would wear: Temps d’une Fete, Ostara, La Haie Fleurie, Jo Malone French Lime Blossom, Message From Orchids to name a few. June 23, 2017 at 12:08pm Reply

    • Elisa: I had never heard of Message from Orchids and just looked it up. What a rare find. June 23, 2017 at 1:43pm Reply

  • Madaris: For a picnic in our over-heated NC summers, I might wear O de L’Orangerie, EL Pure White Linen Pink Coral, or Tom Ford Sole di Positano. I love the sharp fresh citrus of the latter, though I only own a sample. June 23, 2017 at 1:45pm Reply

    • Phyllis Iervello: Tom Ford Sole di Positano is a good one for picnics. June 23, 2017 at 3:19pm Reply

      • Madaris: Also Tom Ford Neroli Portofino and Mandarino di Amalfi! The latter is my only bottle-size Tom Ford, so I use sparingly though I long to splash it! June 23, 2017 at 3:48pm Reply

        • Phyllis Iervello: Yes both of them are and I still have enough in my bottles to splash lavishly. June 23, 2017 at 4:39pm Reply

      • Elisa: His colognes are so nice, but if I was going to splash out on a Tom Ford Private Blend I’d have to go for one of the really rich ones like Plum Japonais or Noir de Noir. June 24, 2017 at 9:36am Reply

  • Joy: Great suggestions. It is warm and humid here today on the North Coast of Oregon. I wish I had chosen my Cristalle. I chose instead Paris, which is not fitting too well with the day. The rose/violet are a bit overwhelming. When I get outside in my garden it might work better.

    Joy June 23, 2017 at 2:14pm Reply

    • Elisa: I think of Paris as smelling like a damp rose, so I can see that it might not work so well in humidity! June 24, 2017 at 9:38am Reply

  • Phyllis Iervello: I was going to say Atelier Cologne Cedrant Enivrant and Orange Sanguine, however, I believe that the Cedrant (very lemony) is now also discontinued. June 23, 2017 at 3:17pm Reply

    • Madaris: Though the descriptions of Atelier fragrances always sound lovely, and seem perfect for my tastes, the 3 I have purchased all seem too “metallic” on my skin. June 23, 2017 at 3:42pm Reply

      • Elisa: Hm, I wonder what material is causing that? Is it helional that can smell silvery? June 24, 2017 at 9:40am Reply

  • OnWingsofSaffron: As I am writing, I am (compulsively) sniffing my “picnic” —i.e. outdoor meets gourmande meets very natural—scent on my wrist: “I Love les Carottes” by Honoré des Prés. And none other than Olivia Giacometti is the creator of this wonderfully original eau de perfum.
I admit: the first time I smelled it, my initial reaction was: okay, interesting, not for me.
But after delving into Hermès’ “Hiris” and (as I have stated more than once here) after making acquaintance with the lovely hand cream “au beurre d’iris” from Frédéric Malle—both also from Giacometti—I thought: what the heck!
And guess what! I absolutely love my “I love les Carottes”!
Back to the picnic: Here we have a salad made of freshly grated organic carrots with freshly pressed orange juice. And indeed, the orange scent is vibrant and there is also this whiff of iris around the whole juice.
Nothing serious: a bit startling, like a cheeky crow pinching your bread roll, yet a lot of good fun. June 23, 2017 at 3:39pm Reply

    • Elisa: My mother absolutely loves the smell of fresh carrots from her garden. She doesn’t wear perfume but if she did I’d buy her that one! June 24, 2017 at 9:42am Reply

      • OnWingsofSaffron: 🙂 June 24, 2017 at 11:37am Reply

      • rainboweyes: I’m a great fan of carrot/iris scents and also absolutely love both Les Carottes and Hiris (which had been my signature scent for years, btw, before I fell down the rabbit hole 😉 )
My picnic scent choices would obviously include these but I’d also add Hermes Osmanthe Yunnan and Artisan Parfumeur Ananas Fizz, another two summer staples of mine. June 25, 2017 at 5:31am Reply

        • rainboweyes: I forgot to mention Odacité Wild Carrot Serum Concentrate. It gives me a carrot/iris kick every night 😉 .
Maybe also something your mother would enjoy? June 25, 2017 at 5:35am Reply

          • Elisa: Oh, maybe so! And yes to Ananas Fizz! June 25, 2017 at 8:45am Reply

          • OnWingsofSaffron: Ooh: that sounds enticing…! June 27, 2017 at 2:53am Reply

  • kat: Just the other day I looked at my recent perfume purchases and realized they’re all not suited for summer and especially not for the current heatwave. I dug into my old collection and got my Bvlgari Thé Vert of of the closet. Alas, it has turned. Maybe not that surprising since I bought it from money earned by baby-sitting my little nephew. Said nephew is now towering over me.
I have a sample of Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune and decided to give it a try. But Guerlain and I are just not meant to be. There’s always a note I can’t stand (I feel like a Philistine typing this).
And so the quest continues. June 23, 2017 at 5:32pm Reply

    • Maria: I’m with you on Guerlain (and I always feel like a Philistine saying it :-)) . The only one that I can wear is Eau du coq, but it is sooo evanescent… June 23, 2017 at 11:11pm Reply

      • kat: LOL! Glad I’m not the only one. There’s always a sickly sweet note lurking that I can’t stand. Reminds me of the dark sticky liqueur leftovers at the bottom of glasses that are really hard to clean.
Anyhow I dug a bit deeper into my collection and found a bottle of Biotherm’s Eau Vitaminée – much better! June 24, 2017 at 7:55am Reply

    • Elisa: Guerlains are hit or miss with me and it depends a lot on concentration and vintage, but I get along very well with Pamplelune. June 24, 2017 at 9:43am Reply

  • kpaint: L’Artisan Thé Pour un Été smells like a picnic to me – dried grass, iced tea, lemonade. Though admittedly this post has got me thinking more about a spread of cold fried chicken and watermelon more than anything else.

In years past, no picnic would be complete without a chilled bottle of Rosé, which has me thinking pink. Hermès Rose Ikebana, Kelly Caleche, SeeByChloé, YSL Baby Doll or Acqua di Parma Arancia di Capri might do the trick! June 23, 2017 at 6:20pm Reply

    • Kari: A glass of rose is totally my kind of picnic, too. June 23, 2017 at 6:56pm Reply

    • Elisa: Rosé scents could be a list on its own! I’d put Clarins Par Amour Toujours in that category too. June 24, 2017 at 9:46am Reply

  • CrescentStreet: Bigarade by Nina Ricci 1971-75 which deserves to be revived is perfect for a picnic on a hot summer day. Also – You or Someone Like You by Chandler Burr, and Pure Mariposa by Monegal. June 23, 2017 at 7:50pm Reply

    • Elisa: I don’t think I’ve tried Pure Mariposa but it sounds perfectly picnic-y! You or Someone Like You is on my list to try. June 25, 2017 at 8:48am Reply

  • Richard Goller: These are all wonderful recommendations, Victoria. I would opt for Atelier Cologne Silver Iris. Eau de Rochas Pour Homme would be another good one. Thanks for sharing with us. You set a mood so well. R June 24, 2017 at 5:07am Reply

  • Connie: Ahhh, I love this list! None of these are ones I own but they’re all ones I solidly like (except I haven’t tried the Moschino, Demeter, or Fashiony).
I think of all of my perfumes the ones best suited to a picnic would be Zoologist Hummingbird or Guerlain’s Promenade des Anglais.
This list of some favorite spring perfumes, in short: https://listmimsy.wordpress.com/2017/03/24/a-handful-of-spring-perfumes-sneaking-into-my-icy-winter-heart/ June 24, 2017 at 6:38am Reply

    • Elisa: Thank you for sharing your list, they all sound so good! June 25, 2017 at 8:52am Reply

  • Madaris: I am disappointed: just heard back from emailing the Smell Bent people, and of course Fashiony is discontonued & unavailable! They have many other scents that also sound intriguing though. June 24, 2017 at 2:16pm Reply

    • Elisa: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that! I’ll have to enjoy my little purse spray while it lasts. June 25, 2017 at 8:49am Reply

  • Tiffanie: La Chasse aux Papillons is my favorite spritz when I’m ready to head outdoors on a warm day. It is fleeting but melds perfectly with the smell of green grass, blooming trees, and fresh air.

I’m reminded to smell Pamplelune and Herba Fresca next time I wander by a perfume counter with testers.

A few months ago I planted tomato seeds and now have the chance to smell the vines and fruit each day. Their scent was not my favorite in the past but it has become more appealing. I’ve got to try a scent with tomato leaf soon.

Thank you, Elisa, for the summer scent inspiration. June 24, 2017 at 4:28pm Reply

    • Elisa: Thanks Tiffanie!

I love tomatoes so much — I’m waiting for someone to design a candle that smells like roasted tomatoes 🙂 June 25, 2017 at 8:54am Reply

  • Maya: Hi Elisa,
I love your choices and thank you for the skewers recommendation- simple and elegant. My picnic selection would be Annick goutal’s eau de chevrefeuille, L’artisan te pour ete, and L’Ombre dans l’eau. Thank you also for recommending Mrs. Meyer’s geranium scented cleaner which I now cannot do without and the books The Door and Journey by Moonlight- I enjoyed them both. • Roxana: Hi Elisa,

Long time visiting boisdejasmin blog but my first post.
It’s so hot here where I live and I was actually thinking about organizing a picnic with my friends, somewhere in a beautiful park. This list gives me even more envie of that.
Also, you just reminded me of my aunt and my childhood summers. She had a small rose garden and she used to make rose petal jam and vinegar. She passed away a few years ago. Now I have to look for “Rose Splendide”, you made me very curious. June 25, 2017 at 4:09am Reply

    • Elisa: Rose vinegar! I knew it had to exist 🙂

Thank you for being a long-time reader, and welcome June 26, 2017 at 4:38pm Reply

  • Aurora: Good idea to have a mood board: picnic is perfect to evoke summer and it’s an enticing list with some choices I’m not familiar with.
I will wear a lot this summer: my staple Eau de Rochas both vintage and modern, Shalimar PI L’Eau (grapefruit like Moschino Funny), R&G Fleur d’Osmanthus (thanks to Victoria’s recommendation) Caron Eau de Reglisse (I think you like it too) EL Jasmine White Moss, Caligna which I too discovered recently and vintage Dior Eau Fraiche which is simply my most perfect cologne. June 25, 2017 at 11:42am Reply

    • Elisa: I do love Eau de Reglisse! It’s the only truly summer-appropriate licorice scent I can think of. June 25, 2017 at 6:07pm Reply

  • Yanet: I would wear eau sauvage, anais anais or cristalle!! June 26, 2017 at 11:30pm Reply

    • Elisa: Can’t go wrong with any of those! June 28, 2017 at 3:08pm Reply

  • Cath: I have been enjoying my Do Son as of late, am contemplating adding Remarkable People to my rotation, and I especially love Byredo’s Pulp. I wanted to love Bronze Goddess and it was really on the verge of being perfect but then it went kind of bitter on me. I am looking for a summer scent that is opulently tropical, sweet, not overly coconut-y, yet manage to be milky and not green. The search is never ending… July 2, 2017 at 2:39am Reply

    • Elisa: The search is half the fun!

I’m a huge Pulp fan. I can never get enough black currant. July 2, 2017 at 9:36pm Reply
