Always wanted a custom fragrance created by a famous house, but feared that you do not have enough money in your bank account? In comparison with Jean Patou, Cartier and Guerlain who offer a bespoke service in the range of 30,000 euros and up, L’Artisan Parfumeur’s $5,000 seems like a very reasonable sum. I am certainly being facetious; however, the topic of custom fragrances never ceases to amuse me, seeming both decadent and strange. Decadent, because I can imagine better uses for that money, and strange, because I am closer to figuring out perpetuum mobile than a signature fragrance concept.

parislondres: I cannot agree more about better use for money than have a bespoke fragrance created for me. Like you, I am always amused at how people are willing to spend that kind of money. Then again maybe a lot of these people do not think much of money under 100K dollars I suppose. 😉

Jay: First, let me tell you how much I love this site – your descriptions have seduced me in to seeking out new fragrances. Secondly, I work in wine and deal with lavish expenses daily. I regularly put together cases that cost more than my rent. It seemed almost obscene at first, but as one with a severely decadent streak in her, I know that had I the cash, I’d probably do the same! Dear Jay, thank you very much for a compliment on my site. Scents are seductive to me, and they are not limited to perfume. I can understand what you mean about decadence. My decadent (if that word is applicable to this case) dream is to receive a perfumer training from ISIPCA, however given my current Ph.D. work, that is not likely to happen in the near future. However, there are plenty of wonderful things to smell around, including wine. I have had just as many evocative moments tasting wine as I did testing fragrances. August 12, 2005 at 9:39am
