Fragrance News: Estee Lauder Youth Dew Amber Nude

I heard about plans to feature Youth Dew in a limited edition version for the winter holidays, and now the rumor turns out to be true–the new fragrance will be called Youth Dew Amber Nude. I like the original (1953), which is a dark spicy composition of bergamot, clove, rose and patchouli, with a rich ornamentation of powdery aldehydes and amber. As for the limited edition, I hope that it will more interesting that most of the modern takes on classical fragrances. The original will remain untouched, while the limited edition version will also accompany an eponymous color line starting early December. (from wwd).

  • mireille: I am actually looking forward to this … I wonder if it will be more translucent than the original, which I still love, with all its syrupy sweetness. Yum. *also, please accept my weekly thank you for all the wonderful reviews … I come over here to bask in the imagery … xoxoxo* August 4, 2005 at 8:24pm Reply

  • Victoria: Thank you for such a wonderful compliment, dear M! When I first heard of the news, I immediately had a particular vision of what the limited edition might be like, which I imagined as having softer spice and patchouli and richer amber base (perhaps, using some of the modern warm rich, yet translucent ambers). We will see what it is really going to be like in a few months.

  • Anya: I have quite a stash of minis, in excellent condition that I got off one seller on Ebay who had some secret stash (over 100). I recoiled in horror when I saw a Youth Dew in there. Now, of course, I just dab some on today. In 96F/100%humidity heat. In Miami. Victoria, you’re driving me mad. I don’t have access to all the rare and niche ‘fumes you mention, so I’m driven by your fresh description of YD to try some.

I need help. I’m going to wear YD. Send a team. Strap me down and administer some knock out drugs before I harm myself.

August. Miami. Youth Dew. Think about it. Help. August 5, 2005 at 7:25am Reply

  • Victoria: Anya, you made me laugh so hard I nearly dropped my laptop. Well, you are one brave woman, however I already got a sense that it might be the case, therefore I am not exactly surprised by your resolve. Just dab some on very-very lightly. I will take blame if the experiment turns out badly. 🙂 August 5, 2005 at 9:33am Reply

  • Anya: V, it lasted six minutes, I kid you not. It was 7:30 a.m., I was inside, under the air conditioning, so I thought it would be bearable. Since I have a painful knee today, and the antiinflammatory hand’t kicked in, I had to ask my mother to bring me a wet cloth with soap on it. When I told her what I had done, she was horrified. YD has been the the butt of family jokes for generations. She started to recall incidents of being stuck in elevators with women wearing that, back in the 50’s. She’d call Aunt Stella before a visit and ask her to not use it that day. Well, I countered that it took me years of begging to get her to stop using Toujours Moi, a YD partner-in-nose-offense, in my book. Standoff, haha!

She really did look at me as if I had gone mad with that experiment. God, that stuff is strong and well, I’ll just leave it at strong as to not offend those who love it. Strong, oh yeah. August 5, 2005 at 12:07pm Reply

  • Victoria: Well, you have done it, and you are still alive to tell the tale. Youth Dew is definitely strong, with nothing subtle about it. I also confess that I like Opium, but again it is something I wear in miniscule amounts in the privacy of my own home. Mere thought of being stuck in an elevator with someone wearing either one of these (or Angel) makes me ill. August 5, 2005 at 12:46pm Reply
