Prix François Coty for 2005, which recognizes the perfumer’s achievements, both over the span of the career as well as the most recent ones, was awarded to Sophie Labbé, a senior perfumer with International Flavors & Fragrances. She is the first woman to receive the prize, which has been in effect since 2000. Her creations include Nina Ricci Premier Jour, Givenchy Organza, Hugo Boss Boss Woman, and Comme des Garçons Series 1: Tea.

Previous recipients of the prize were perfumers such as Alberto Morillas (the creator of Giorgio Armani Emporio White She, Bvlgari Omnia, Calvin Klein cK One), Maurice Roucel (the nose behind Helmut Lang Eau de Cologne and Parfum, Gucci Envy, Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist) and Francis Kurkdjian (Jean-Paul Gaultier Le Male, Christian Dior Eau Noire and Cologne Blanche, Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile). • Marina: I love Comme des Garçons Series 1: Tea and I love the fact that a lady perfumer won the Prix! October 20, 2005 at 9:02am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: N, I agree! I really like Sophie Labbe’s creations. October 20, 2005 at 10:47am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: M, me too! You are actually the reason I retested Tea, and it is excellent. Dark, smoky and rich–a perfect tea fragrance for me. October 20, 2005 at 10:48am Reply

  • linda: What a coincidence! I am wearing Givenchy Organza today. Congratulations to Sophie!!! October 20, 2005 at 3:00pm Reply

  • Tara: One slight correction, that is Maurice Roucel, not Marcel Roucel, who did ISM. It’s the same guy that did Musc Ravageur for Frederic Malle – two diametrically opposed scents if I ever did smell them. October 20, 2005 at 6:42pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: L, I remember that it was a triple vanilla tour de force on me. I should retest it again though, because somehow today I am in the mood for something like that. October 20, 2005 at 4:23pm Reply

  • Evan: I didn’t know that Iris Silver Mist was not a Chris Sheldrake creation, I thought all the Lutens line was his work for some reason. I haven’t tried any of Labbé’s work, I’ll look for it. And I hope Kurkdjian won for his other work, and not Le Male 😉 October 20, 2005 at 4:48pm Reply

  • songscent: I love Premier Jour. This is a beautiful tea scent: light, fresh, delicate. The first woman? Isn’t it about time? October 20, 2005 at 6:48pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Evan, Iris Silver Mist is the only non-Sheldrake creation in the Lutens line. Roucel’s work is exceptional though, and ISM is one of my favourites. October 20, 2005 at 9:18pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Tara, yes, you are absolutely right. It is a typo on my part. Maurice Roucel of Symrise is the perfumer. Thanks for mentioning. October 20, 2005 at 9:26pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Premier Jour is lovely! I am very glad that Sophie Labbe is getting the recognition she deserves with this prize. October 20, 2005 at 9:27pm Reply
