Tom Ford’s Second Collection for Estée Lauder

Azuree

Tom Ford revealed his new plan for Estée Lauder, which will be Ford’s collection entitled Azurēe. As Ford said, “It was Estée’s own made up name, for this sexy, beachy thing.” The original fragrance was created in 1969 and featured notes of citrus, basil, sage, oakmoss, and spearmint. However, contrary to the speculations, the collection will not feature a fragrance, unlike the Amber Nude range, which includes Youth Dew Amber Nude reinterpreted by Ford. From Fashionweekdaily.

  • mreenymo: What? No fragrance? Then what’s the point of the exercise, Tom Ford?

Geez–what a disappointment. I would love to see an updated version of Azuree, as the original is a bit too overpowering, even for me. :):)

  • mreenymo: I find it to be more of a heavy chypre. A toned-down modern version would prove to be quite interesting, but I guess Tom Ford does not agree with me. November 7, 2005 at 4:45pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: R, you know, I have never tried the original. Is it as herbal and citrusy as the notes suggest? November 7, 2005 at 12:45pm Reply

  • Karin: I actually like Azuree. I have it in a very small mini from years ago. I don’t wear it often, as you can see as I still have it, but it is satisfying when I do. I think I might like to try it mixed with unscented lotion. November 7, 2005 at 8:28pm Reply

  • helg: And thank God it didn’t caught his olfactory interest!

All this revamping will not attract a new customer , it will just scare away the old loyal one , I am afraid….

Also the prices escalating cannot be a thing to retain the old clientelle….

Better stick to new things , like Amber Nude which seems completely different and has an “almost new” name.

Genius Estee kept the old fragrance regardless and at a low price on purpose : to keep the loyal base.
I am surprised a marketeer ( cuz he’s no designer , surely) such as Tom Ford doesn’t realise that. Or else he has remarkably ambitious plans for the company. It remains to be seen. November 7, 2005 at 5:15pm Reply

  • kristen: Tom Ford is over there stirring up his usual brand of controversy…it should be interesting to see what develops. I would love to sit in on meetings at EL with Tom and see how many ideas of his get vetoed:

Tom: “ok, let’s have Gwyneth completely painted gold, looking all post-coital and messy, in a pool of live bees.”

EL exec: “uhhhhhh…I don’t think so.”

    Heheheh. November 7, 2005 at 6:42pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: R, I wonder if it is the company that decided not to relaunch it. I suppose it is a much less well-known fragrance than YD. November 7, 2005 at 10:51pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: E, the price increases are distressing. However, I wonder what is the balance between affordable price and good quality ingredients. I am not sure what to think about that.

I think that the loyal base for EL is diminishing, which is why the same model may not work anymore. The pressure to remain competitive is very tough. I do not really know what to think… Like you, I want my classics to remain the same. November 7, 2005 at 10:56pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Kristen, thank you for the visual and the laugh! As Ford says, nothing is too risque for him! November 7, 2005 at 10:57pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Karin, thank you. I will try it. Chypre is a genre I keep revisiting lately. November 7, 2005 at 10:57pm Reply

  • sf: I, for one, am eagerly awaiting the COLOR collection inspired by the Azuree fragrance. I think that is truely what Tom Ford is more interested in conveying this time around. With his new line coming out under the Estee Lauder umbrella in the next year or so, while he is awaiting all the tedious details of launching his own vehicle, I think he is having a great time collaborating with Estee Lauder and honing his “chops” in both cosmetics and fragrance. The Youth Dew Amber Nude fragrance and color collection was his first endeavor in this arena and I think he did quite well. The color collection (being limited edition and bearing his name) sold out almost instantly. While the colors were a little too, well, “ambery” for my taste, he did hit a nerve and managed to do it very elegantly with an air of exclusivity, which I think the industry as a whole has sort of forgotten. In his second collection (due out mid/end of May), he is doing three collections in one, hitting warm, neutral and cool undertones this time (so everyone can find colors that work for them, or play around with all three collections…pure genius!). And, although he is not re-inventing Azuree, he has added two body products with a new version of the scent, a body oil spray and a body tint.

I don’t think Estee Lauder will ever mess with the classics. There is room for both original Youth Dew (which the company has no plans of discontinuing) AND Amber Nude. Since 1953 (Youth Dew’s birth), Estee has never discontinued a women’s fragrance, and to my knowledge, has only discontinued one fairly short-lived men’s fragrance back in the late 80’s/early 90’s (Metropolis). So breathe easy anyone who is passionionate about the classics! 🙂 May 3, 2006 at 10:47am Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: I also loved the Youth Dew Amber Nude line and found the entire collection to be very interesting (even if the colours were “ambery” for me as well). I am looking forward to Azuree collection, and to further collaboration between Tom Ford and perfumers. I find nearly all of his previous forays into perfumery to be excellent. • Sarah: The collection has hit counters this week (at least where I am at). If anyone is concerned about price, the price of the collection is very affordable and is in fact comparable to regular Lauder items (i.e. azuree lip color = $22, regular pure color lipstick = $22).
The colors are fabulous, I already own the neutral look. And the body oil spray smells amazing. May 15, 2006 at 10:23pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Sarah, thank you very much for the news. I shall make a trip to the counter to see the colours and try the body spray. I was impressed the Amber Nude collection, and I expect no less from Azuree. May 16, 2006 at 2:59pm Reply

  • Leah: I work for Estee Lauder and the Azuree colors are GORGEOUS! The prices are exactly the same as the other lipsticks and eyeshadows and the spray body oil smells AMAZING! The body tint is also fabulous and has the same scent as the oil. Also, the face glow is beautiful. This is very limited edition, so get it while you can! May 19, 2006 at 6:27pm Reply

  • BoisdeJasmin: Leah, the body spray does smell amazing! I came by the counter twice to try it, and I think that I might buy it soon. I ended up purchasing a 1oz bottle of Amber Nude this time. May 23, 2006 at 2:18pm Reply
