New Frederic Malle Candles : Notre Dame, Chez Monsieur, Marius & Jeannette

Frédéric Malle and perfumer Bruno Jovanovic collaborated on three new candles, which are already available at Aedes and Barneys. The collection include three scents, with a personal story behind each.

Chez Monsieur in Frédéric Malle’s words: “One of my assessments when working on scents for the home was that unlike traditional perfumes for people, home fragrances aren’t and shouldn’t be sexy. The scent of a men’s den is a slight exception to this rule, as one feels, when smelling it, the presence of its proprietor amongst the precious woods, tobacco and books. Spending time in my grandfather’s reading room as a child left a particular taste for this type of environment.”

Notre Dame in Frédéric Malle’s words: “Of my extremely short career as an altar boy in Paris I only re- member the giggles of my friends in the audience and the scent of incense.”

Marius & Jeannette in Frédéric Malle’s words: “The summer has a thousand smells and, among them, the scent of Pastis is one of my favorites. I was always fond of the cool, minty freshness of this anise drink, as it links Sénéquier (my favorite terrace in St Tropez) and the Café de Flore, Prévert and Pagnol. In order to turn the invigorating scent of this drink into a scent, Bruno Jovanovic added a floral freshness to it, therefore reinforcing its “clean” and refreshing personality.”

Each 220g candle is priced at $80. Via fredericmalle.com.

  • Clace: Yum, these are so great, I tried them on Monday. Loved Marius $ Jeanette and one of the others– can’t tell which by your description, but it smelled so deliciously earthy. Unfortunately I’m not really ready to spend that kind of money on a candle. January 11, 2012 at 12:32pm Reply

  • Nikki: these candles are really special as they are in a beautiful glass container which is white on the inside to really give as much light as possible and this gorgeous poppyred on the outside, they are made in Italy and I re-use mine by putting other candles into them once they are done. are they expensive, of course, but as the glass container is such a great and reusable object, i am looking forward getting another one soon. they are amazing. i love the lily one… January 11, 2012 at 4:34pm Reply

  • Victoria: I haven’t smelled them yet. All three sound very good based on the descriptions. January 11, 2012 at 9:36pm Reply

  • Victoria: I buy high-end candles occasionally, but they usually last me for a very long time. I’ve smelled FM candles being burned, and they are very strong. January 11, 2012 at 9:37pm Reply

  • Victoria: The glass container is beautiful. It is probably the most beautiful candle packaging I’ve seen, except for Mariage Freres line. January 11, 2012 at 9:38pm Reply

  • Raluca: I guess that makes sense. If we like to smell good we should also want our surroundings to smell good as well. I’ll have to take that step soon! 🙂 January 12, 2012 at 10:25am Reply

  • Victoria: Oh, I didn’t mean that one needs an expensive candle to create a pleasant smell at home. It is just that some scents are very nice, and I cannot find lower priced alternatives. That being said, if I buy a fancy candle, it is usually for a gift. January 12, 2012 at 6:24pm Reply
