New York based perfume boutique Aedes de Venustas is releasing a fragrance under its own brand name. Aedes de Venustas Signature Eau de Parfum is composed by perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, and Duchaufour’s words, it is an olfactory reflection of the boutique. “The Aedes de Venustas world is a world of luxury, of quality; simultaneously opulent and baroque yet decadent in a way that is refined. This is reflected in the store’s interior; purple, red and aubergine colors, shimmering and iridescent tones like those found in peacock feathers, and textures expressed in velvet, angel skin like silk, taffetas and brocades.” In 2009 Aedes de Venustas collaborated with L’Artisan Parfumeur on Aedes de Venustas perfume, also created by Duchaufour. The previous fragrance was a smoky incense composition.
The fragrance includes notes of rhubarb, tomato leaf, red-currant, honeysuckle, vetiver, hazelnut, and incense. “The construction is round, luxurious, voluptuous and addictive. The scent’s chypre character is pierced at its center with the ephemeral green freshness of rhubarb accord; the axis around which the fragrance revolves, like the wearer emanating its memorable sillage. Embodied and embodying; Aedes de Venustas Signature Eau de Parfum is the past, present and future of perfumery in simultaneous revolution.”

maggiecat: This certainly sounds intriguing, but I have trouble getting past rhubarb as a scent. My parents used to grow rhubarb in our backyard garden when I was a child, and the scent was…well, not particularly pleasant. Still, I wouldn’t turn down a sample if it came my way. Undina: Are any perfumes not created by Duchaufour out there? 🙂 I like many of his perfumes and he’s considered to be a talented perfumer but can he really keep producing that many different great perfumes every year?
In addition to that, I’m not sure I like the idea of a store having own perfume. In my mind “house wine”, “store brand”, etc. isn’t something to aspire to. March 31, 2012 at 6:52pm
Victoria: It is just that if you are a niche brand, it is very hard to get even a small supplier house to make your perfume. The industry is designed for large volumes–Calvin Klein and LVMH large. There are very few perfumers who work with the small clients or independently, for that matter.
The number of his projects or his capacity to handle them all doesn't surprise me, because most perfumers work on many different projects on daily basis. The only difference being that the chances of their submissions winning are small and that they have to put up with constant reworks at no extra costs to the client. Jean-Marc Troadec: I just bought a full bottle after getting a small sample from the AdV store. I love it! There is a bursting-from-the-seams juiciness from the rhubarb accord. The opening has the same big citric tartness as grapefruit, but with the addition of that weird earthy green note from the tomato leaf it veers just slightly into a “dirt” territory. The vetiver also works to bring it back from the edge of being too sweet, and the light touch of clean incense keeps it out of the candy shop. This is a fairly linear fragrance—there are no surprises over time, just a juicy juicebomb of a fragrance.
I believe that the Aedes online shop offers samples for a small fee, so if you like the idea of rhubarb (a leafy vegetable used as a fruit), you might want to check it out! July 12, 2012 at 7:08am
