Chanel Coco Noir : New Fragrance Inspired by Venice and Coco

“Why does all I do become byzantine?” — Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel

Chanel is launching a new fragrance Coco Noir in September 2012. The fragrance was inspired by the time Coco Chanel spent in Venice, and the idea of Venetian velvet is a recurring motif. A variation on Coco, an opulent floral oriental, Coco Noir was created by Jacques Polge. The notes include Calabrian bergamot, grapefruit, rose, jasmine, narcissus, geranium, tonka bean, Indonesian patchouli, sandalwood, vanilla, incense, and  white musk.

It will be available at selected stores starting August 15th and worldwide in September. Please see more about the launch and available sizes at Nowsmellthis. Via theharlow.net

  • Barbara: I am Not a fan of Coco – it smells great on others but not on me. But what the heck, I’m ready to buy Coco Noir for the bottle. The bottle is to die for. July 27, 2012 at 8:32am Reply

    • Victoria: The bottle looks stunning, at least in photos. The classical Chanel shape in all-black is so dramatic. July 27, 2012 at 9:21am Reply

  • Tatiana: I like Coco, so I’m hoping this is recognizable as a variant on Coco. Either way, I’m such a bottle tart and Chanel fan that I may just own this one for display. Still, I’m wishing for a reformulation of No.19, back to it’s original state. A woman can dream, can’t she? July 27, 2012 at 10:27am Reply

    • Victoria: Wouldn’t that be wonderful! Although I like No 19 the way it is too. I didn’t wear it in its glory days, so I got attached to the new version very quickly. July 27, 2012 at 10:58am Reply

  • sammysmom: Venice? Did you say Venice? I want! I totally fell in love with Venice on my recent trip so I’m behind excited that my fave fashion house is doing smth Venice inspired. July 27, 2012 at 10:34am Reply

    • sammysmom: *blushing* I meant “beyond excited.” See how I excited I got! 🙂 July 27, 2012 at 10:35am Reply

      • Victoria: No worries! 🙂 I got excited too. July 27, 2012 at 11:13am Reply

    • Victoria: Venice is so beautiful, it seems unreal. I’m curious to see what Chanel ends up doing with Coco Noir and whether it will be a twist on Coco or Coco Mademoiselle. I love the Venice reference and the bottle, however. July 27, 2012 at 10:59am Reply

      • solanace: That’s the point I have in mind. Hope it’s a twist on Coco, aimed at grownups… July 27, 2012 at 7:35pm Reply

        • Victoria: Exactly, preferably the ones old enough to vote! July 28, 2012 at 5:42am Reply

  • Nancy A.: Coco was a good match for me based on the compliments I usually received. The notes (Noir) sound wintry, alluring and curious to learn what Jacques Polge is up to. When Chanel 19 started to evolve, I’m hoping that this is not a similar situation. July 27, 2012 at 11:01am Reply

    • Victoria: I was on the fence about Chanel No 19 Poudre at first, but then I ended up enjoying it for its sheer iris and musk scent. But if I think about it as a variation on No 19, I get disappointed. Perhaps, I simply had a different idea in my mind.

Coco Noir sounds promising! July 27, 2012 at 11:10am Reply

  • silverdust: Just seeing the name of Jacques Polge makes me want to sniff it! July 27, 2012 at 11:36am Reply

    • Victoria: He’s really talented. I also look forward to smelling these big launches from Chanel, since if nothing else, they tend to have quality. July 27, 2012 at 5:01pm Reply

  • Anne Sheffield: Oh that does sounds intriguing. I hope it is more a twist on Coco than one on Coco Mademoiselle as I m not the bIggest fan, I find it has a sharp aftertaste on my noise. But I like the list of ingredients and the bottle looks lovely. Exiting news! Hugs to you all. Anne July 27, 2012 at 11:37am Reply

    • Victoria: Coco Mademoiselle is too sharp and loud to me. At one point I wore the body mist, which was softer, but I think that it has been discontinued. I’m also keeping my fingers crossed that it’s closer to Coco. July 27, 2012 at 5:03pm Reply

  • L.: I thought the IFRA banned M. Polge from using white musk following the release of No19 Poudre. July 27, 2012 at 12:11pm Reply

    • Victoria: 🙂 They are too busy banning other more innocuous things. July 27, 2012 at 5:11pm Reply

  • minette: ooooh, that looks so promising! love love love coco edt (brighter, sunnier than the edp), but heck, also love the edp and the parfum. think i just really like coco. July 27, 2012 at 4:33pm Reply

    • Victoria: All of this talk of Coco really makes me want to revisit it. I have a bottle of parfum here. I would love to see how it compared to the edt/edp, but at least, that should be easy enough. July 27, 2012 at 5:14pm Reply

      • Alyssa: Oh I could write that one from memory! But I’d have to go to Sephora to test the most recent versions. Mine are all a bit aged. Prefer the parfum by a mile, but the EDP has its charms on cold days and days calling for a big-shoulders kind of presence. July 29, 2012 at 4:12pm Reply

        • Victoria: a big-shoulders kind of presence–I love it! Yes, some days definitely require that. 🙂 July 30, 2012 at 4:02am Reply

  • Michael: I’m probably wrong, but those notes are making me think this one could be worn by the gents too. At least I’m hoping so. I like the original Coco anyway. July 27, 2012 at 5:53pm Reply

    • Victoria: If it were a niche launch, I would have no doubts, but a big launches for women these days tend to be on the sweet side. I like the original Coco on men too. It’s so spicy and woody that it works. July 28, 2012 at 5:35am Reply

      • Rina: My DH sneaks my Coco bath gel (vintage) in the shower and it smells divine on him! I’m a “bottle tart” too, can’t wait to see it and smell it! July 30, 2012 at 6:15pm Reply

        • Victoria: My husband used Womanity shower gel and it smelled fantastic on him! Much more interesting than it smelled on me, and not feminine at all. So, yes, I can believe how Coco would be wonderful on your husband. July 30, 2012 at 6:17pm Reply

  • Lynn Morgan: Coco Chanel and Venice!!!!! A gorgeous conflagration of favorites!!! I have never been to Venice, but no other city looms as large in my imagination- the setting of some of my favorite books- “Death in Venice” and the wildly romantic interlude in ‘Brideshead Revisited”: “…I was drowning in honey, stingless…”the setting of so many wonderful movies like ‘Wings of the Dove” and “Don’t Look Now” and even ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”. No other city seems as deliciously decadent and haunted… I forgot Anne Rice’s brilliant stand-alone book about castrati and opera, “Cry to Heaven” And Coco Chanel, like Venice dweller Marchesa Casati is one of my ultimate heros, icons (and occasionally a cautionary tale, if you throw in the unfortunate bit about banging the Nazi…)I am so excited about this- it may become my scent for Winter. I may not even care what it smells like, I am already so infatuated with the idea and the bottle! July 27, 2012 at 5:58pm Reply

    • Victoria: After reading this, I’m ready just to place a pre-order for my bottle, whatever the juice smells like. Or maybe, to get over my infatuation with the idea, I should just watch “Wings of the Dove”. 🙂 July 28, 2012 at 5:38am Reply

  • Undina: Chanel just have to launch something really nice for a change! Pleeeease… July 28, 2012 at 1:56am Reply

    • Victoria: Yes! Keeping fingers crossed. July 28, 2012 at 5:46am Reply

  • Amer: Michael that was my thought too. Even if it is not unisex, I hope it will be dark and deep. I do try to control my enthusiasm however as mr.Polge and Channel have made a habit of introducing pumped up powders for the last few releases under their names respectively. July 28, 2012 at 3:43am Reply

    • Victoria: My only concern is that it might be a twist on Coco Mademoiselle, which would be a shame. July 28, 2012 at 5:47am Reply

  • Anna Minis: I have a vision of Lynn Morgan lying on a sofa, listening to Liszt’s La Lugubre Gondola, a bottle of Coco Noir at hand. July 28, 2012 at 5:32am Reply

    • Victoria: 🙂 Wearing a long strand of black pearls and a black velvet gown. I haven’t met Lynn, but I can’t imagine her wearing white pearls for some reason. July 28, 2012 at 5:50am Reply

  • jenifier: Channel always invents something good . so we are excited about new one July 28, 2012 at 5:54am Reply

  • Anna Minis: Black pearls, definitely. And deep red lipstick, like Pourpre de Chanel. July 28, 2012 at 6:19am Reply

  • Dusan: The bottle looks stunning! Hopefully the juice will be good too. July 28, 2012 at 4:08pm Reply

  • Keren: Bottle looks appealing, closer to the original Coco to me in concept. Sort of like a Coco modernized for today. Know if the formulation changed in the original Coco? It smells different on me than the first bottle I bought in 1988. Still smells great! Hope this will be also July 29, 2012 at 6:06pm Reply

    • Victoria: I think that it has been changed many times already, and I agree with you, if I compare the current version to the older ones, I can smell a difference. But reformulation or not, I still think that it’s a gorgeous, must try perfume. July 30, 2012 at 4:06am Reply

  • Isabeau: Victoria I smelled this one last weekend and it does not smell like Coco! But I did smell some Coco Mademoisselle in it..it is a soft close to skin fragrance. I Liked it on me..but I like almost everything 😉 the bottle is gorgeous! July 30, 2012 at 3:57am Reply

    • Victoria: Thank you very much for sharing your impressions! So, it isn’t overly noir in the end! 🙂
The bottle is just as beautiful as the photographs. But then again, Chanel always does their packaging splendidly. July 30, 2012 at 4:00am Reply

    • Keren: I just came back from smelling it and agree with all you say. It was nice on me also. Very subtle, understated July 30, 2012 at 3:21pm Reply
