Serge Lutens Une Voix Noire : New Perfume

Serge Luten has unveiled his newest Paris exclusive fragrance called Une Voix Noire. “The stars rise in chorus. The night sky is filled with the light of the moon.  It is a tribute to the singer Billie Holiday, a reference to a gardenia she wore in her hair.

The perfume is now available via sergelutens.com, 75ml is 130 euros. Via sergelutens.com

  • Jack Sullivan: Can’t wait to sniff it! Love the idea of a tribute to a jazz singer, to me jazz is the ideal musical counterpart to most of Lutens’ perfumes.
By the way Victoria, the price of this one is 130 euros – not that 10 euros more on the price tag could deter me from buying it! September 13, 2012 at 7:13am Reply

    • Victoria: Curious to smell it!
Yesterday when I wrote the post it did cost 120, I swear. September 13, 2012 at 4:16pm Reply

  • Lucas: I just got a sample of it from SL yesterday (in a solid form of course)

It smells nice but not good enough for me to crave a full bottle. To me it smelled like a woody gardenia with a touch of incense and raspberries.

And guess what! Yesterday it was for 120€ and today it’s 130€! September 13, 2012 at 10:20am Reply

    • Victoria: Ah-ha, so I’m not losing my mind after all.
The wax samples aren’t always representative of what the perfume might smell like. Or so I will keep telling myself. September 13, 2012 at 4:17pm Reply

      • Jack Sullivan: Probably the 120 euros price tag is the default setting whenever they enter a new perfume in the online store (once upon a time all bell jars were 120 euros if I’m not mistaken).
In any case the wax samples do smell very different from the actual perfumes, and do no evolve so much on the skin (I wish they’d give mini-sprays instead because this can be very misleading). September 14, 2012 at 2:34am Reply

  • Eurodivas: I am still waiting for my sample. They did offer one for free which I requested so I hope it is this one and the Gardenia note is dominant. September 13, 2012 at 11:44am Reply

    • Victoria: I hope so too! A great gardenia is worth hunting down. September 13, 2012 at 4:18pm Reply

  • Jessica: Oh, I’m very curious about this one. I really do love Billie Holiday’s music…!

I wonder whether SL will released more detailed information about the fragrance’s notes. September 14, 2012 at 11:24am Reply

    • Victoria: The accord of tobacco and gardenia is the main one. All in all, an exciting launch! September 17, 2012 at 6:16pm Reply

  • L.: I saw notes of gardenia, rum and tobacco listed various places online, unconfirmed. I sometimes don’t like when a rum and tobacco and tobacco dominate a composition – it becomes too easy – so if those are the notes I hope they are done with complexity in mind (also, disliked Chergui – too easy, too boring!).

Anyway, almost sounds like Lys Fume with gardenia instead. September 14, 2012 at 2:59pm Reply

    • L.: LOL “a rum and tobacco and tobacco”??? How’d that happen? Meant to type “a rum and tobacco *accord*”! September 14, 2012 at 3:01pm Reply

      • Victoria: 🙂 Tobacco doesn’t dominate here, you have nothing to worry about. This is definitely miles away from Chergui, which is a fragrance I love but approach timidly. September 17, 2012 at 6:17pm Reply

  • Margaret Tolliver: I only own one Jeux de Peau Serge Lutens, there are others that interest me but one’s perfume budget only goes so far…especially if your tastes tend to run to the high end! I would love to try this because of the inspiration and the notes, rum and tobacco especially and how it will meld with the gardenia! September 15, 2012 at 12:29pm Reply

    • Victoria: I hear you, Margaret! At least, Lutens is still on the reasonable side as far as niche goes. Definitely not a bargain hunter’s dream, but nothing like $200 for 50ml that I see among other niche lines. September 17, 2012 at 6:18pm Reply

  • bluegardenia: How exciting! I believe this will be a new thing for Serge Lutens, no? They’ve done two jasmines (A la Nuit and Sarrasins) and two tuberoses (Criminelle and Cedre) but not a gardenia yet to my knowledge.
I remember Strange Invisible Perfumes did a gardenia scent called Lady Day which was also a tribute to Billie Holiday a few years back. Robin at nowsmellthis was a fan I believe. I sadly didn’t get to try it before it was discontinued.
The gardenia-tobacco combination also sounds to me like it might be a sister fragrance to Etat Libre d’Orange’s Jasmin et Cigarette, which I love in theory but haven’t really worn.
In any case…very much looking forward to trying this! September 19, 2012 at 1:57am Reply

    • Victoria: It is not quite as smoky as Jasmin et Cigarette, but yes, there is something there that gives them a similar aura. It is really a complex, intricate perfume. I definitely need more time to live with it. September 19, 2012 at 7:20am Reply
