The Fragrance Wardrobe : My Article in Red Magazine

The November issue of UK’s popular women’s magazine, Red Magazine (Hearst), features my article “The Fragrance Wardrobe” (p. 206-212) on how I went from a single signature perfume to a wardrobe of scents. I also explain why I find fragrance as rewarding and stimulating as music and art, and how to create your own perfume wardrobe. It is available on newsstands now. Red Magazine’s November issue is autumn inspired and includes interesting articles on managing stress, creating healthy meals, picking the ideal skincare and more.

Here is a peak inside the magazine, as well as into my current fall perfume wardrobe.

Why am I such a proponent of a perfume wardrobe? The pleasure I take in building my perfume wardrobe is not in the process of buying a new perfume–a small, well-edited perfume collection is more practical, but simply in using my nose as I discover new scents. As I pick up the bottles and lift the stoppers, I time travel and dream. There is no one perfume that captures all of my moods and cravings, and exploring scents has made my world so much richer. I enjoy sharing this experience with others, and this is what my Red Magazine article is about.

My current wardrobe is tending towards rich and warm, but some favorites are always present–Chanel No 19, Parfums de Nicolaï Odalisque, Guerlain ChamadeSerge Lutens Bois de Violette. Clearly I need to buy another bottle of Guerlain L’Heure Bleue–mine is running out. This warm orange blossom and iris perfume is a panacea to feeling under the weather, and I’m quickly depleting my reserve of Eau de Parfum as the rainy Belgian fall gets underway. On the other hand, Annick Goutal Néroli, another orange blossom but a sparkling, fresh one, is the best pick-me-up on cold mornings. It’s a ray of sunshine captured in a bottle. Lolita Lempicka is for days when I want something delicious, and its confection of tonka bean, iris, maraschino cherries and dark woods never fails to please.

Hope that you will like the article. Once it will become available online, I will update this post with a link. Meanwhile, you can browse Red Magazine via redonline.co.uk.

  • Jenna: Red is my sister’s favourite magazine and just the other day she mentioned that it had 5 pages devoted to perfume. I didn’t realise till now that it’s your article. 🙂 I need to track down a copy. October 15, 2012 at 7:29am Reply

    • Victoria: I’ve been reading Red for the past few years whenever I managed to get a hold of it, and I like its tone and choice of topics. I think that they cover perfume time to time, always a good thing from my perspective. 🙂 October 15, 2012 at 10:17am Reply

  • Lucas: Congrats Victoria!
When I look at you and other perfume bloggers it strucks me that you’re so popular. You write books, articles or even create your own perfume with famous perfumers.

I’m so very far behind. October 15, 2012 at 7:40am Reply

    • Victoria: Thank you, Lucas.
You aren’t behind anybody, you’re on the right track. And don’t be too hard on yourself, considering that you’ve only started blogging this summer. It’s not about popularity, it’s about doing what you love and doing it because you love it. You will get there and beyond, so keep it up! October 15, 2012 at 10:22am Reply

  • Kristina: Victoria, this is great! Just want to ask you as I’m spotting No. 19 in your current rotation: Do you find the reformulation of the EdP okay? I used to love this scent in the past and have a hard time with the new version. I’m considering the extrait, maybe they didn’t dare to touch that one… October 15, 2012 at 8:18am Reply

    • Victoria: This bottle is relatively new. If I remember correctly I got it last year. True, I find it to be different from the older versions–less iris, different musks and woods in the base, thinner overall, but it’s still beautiful. The EDP is a more recent formulation anyway, since the extrait and the EDT came first and for years I didn’t care for the EDP. But these days I wear it with pleasure, saving the extrait for days when I need extra oomph. I prefer the EDT tp the EDP though, but my bottle got misplaced during the move, so the EDP is what I have. October 15, 2012 at 10:30am Reply

  • Elizabeth: How lovely! I like that bell jar of Boxeuses – how I would love to have one, too. I have often revisited my wax sample of it. Such a beautiful leather. October 15, 2012 at 8:55am Reply

    • Victoria: I oscillate between Boxeuses and Bois de Violette. At one point, I finished a bottle of Bois de Violette, and I’ve decided to take a break from it, worried that I might get tired of it. Boxeuses filled that gap nicely, and now it’s in a permanent rotation. October 15, 2012 at 10:31am Reply

      • CM: I have #19 in EDP as well, purchased just this January. It’s a great all-around pick. I prob. need the EDT as well.

And Boxeuses! I fell for that on first sniff. I really should find a bottle somewhere as I’ve drained 2 (small) decants.

Oh – congrats on the print article! Can’t wait to read more. October 16, 2012 at 10:38pm Reply

        • Victoria: Thank you!
If I don’t find my bottle of the EDT, it’s definitely going to end up on the to-purchase list. I have the parfum as well, but the EDP is fresher and easier to carry off during the day. The EDT has this bright, crystalline quality, and it’s just exquisite. October 17, 2012 at 11:16am Reply

  • Vishishta: As much as I appreciate your beautiful writing, I also appreciate your delicious recipes! I made your fantastic Hazelnut, Orange-Cardomen Biscotti this weekend and it was the hit of my Sat. night dinner party! Thank you so much (and please consider writing a cookbook!)–

I also ordered Attar of Roses from LuckyScent and am so pleased with it….. October 15, 2012 at 11:50am Reply

    • Victoria: Vishishta, and I’ve been eating stewed apricots every morning for breakfast. Today someone complimented me on my skin. I don’t know if the apricots (which I believe you recommended for making skin lustrous) are helping, but it’s a tasty breakfast.
In turn, I’m so happy that you liked the biscotti recipe. I’ve tried so many fancy ones, but this simple traditional one is by far the best. October 15, 2012 at 4:23pm Reply

      • Vishishta: There’s a great parfait you can make with the apricots–that’s both delicious and low calorie. In a dessert glass layer apricots, a scoop of ricotta, a delicious chocolate sauce (whatever you most prefer), than more apricots and a repeat of ricotta and chocolate sauce. I invented this once on a diet–and if you don’t overdo the chocolate sauce–you still lose weight!

Congrats on your writing appearing in Red! I hope you continue to get articles in print! October 16, 2012 at 2:56pm Reply

        • Victoria: Thank you very much! And the recipe sounds wonderful. Here I’ve discovered the pleasures of fromage blanc, a soft, creamy cheese that comes in different grades, from double cream to fat free. I will try your recipe with apricots and fromage blanc or ricotta. Since my breakfast is usually your stewed apricot compote and a bowl of yogurt, the parfait will be a great alternative. And some chocolate for breakfast is guaranteed to start off the day on a right note. 🙂 October 16, 2012 at 3:16pm Reply

          • Vishishta: So happy to contribute. My boyfriend so loves your biscotti I guess I’ll have to make more (he forbid me to give any away!).
Comments on your skin is exactly the subtle way the apricots work–like an inner glow! You don’t notice it until people start commenting on it.
BTW your biscotti go well with coffee ice cream! October 16, 2012 at 3:23pm Reply

            • Victoria: I’ve been eating the apricot compote every morning for the past few weeks, and I also have to say that I feel more energy with this breakfast. It reminds me of the compote my ballet teacher taught me to make, and it included many different dried fruits and nuts. I ate it before rehearsals.

Glad to hear that biscotti were a hit! I now want to experiment on turning this recipes into the chocolate version I tried in Florence. October 16, 2012 at 6:18pm Reply

              • Vishishta: Nice to hear–apricots have so much Vitamin A they can only do you good. I find them addictive and wind up putting them in couscous recipes with almonds and raisins as well. Also I once made a great chocolate bottomed pie from them. Will love to read your chocolate biscotti recipes! Thanks! October 16, 2012 at 6:27pm Reply

      • Heather: I duly purchased my copy this morning. 🙂 I never knew it was sold in the convenient hand-bag sized edition, so I may be permanently hooked now. Great article!! I really enjoyed it and am a) ordering samples of a few you mentioned, and b) trying to re-arrange my disorganised collection into some form of categorisation. October 16, 2012 at 12:18pm Reply

        • Victoria: So happy to hear this, Heather! Would love to hear what you ended up ordering and how your reorganization is coming along. My move forced me to reorganize everything completely, and I feel that for this reason alone it was a good thing. 🙂

I wish more magazines were sold in that purse size, because I’ve started carrying a smaller bag that I can sling across my body (so convenient!), and the standard size doesn’t fit in it. October 16, 2012 at 3:11pm Reply

    • Victoria: Hana, I’m glad that you’ve pointed out that part, because in my own explorations, I found that my favorite scents are the ones that inspire me to learn more–about their creators, ingredients, history, famous people who wore them, etc. That’s why I find it such a stimulating hobby. • Austenfan: Wonderful pictures of really quite dreary weather. My poor bottles are always stuck in the dark.
Congratulations on the published article! It must be hugely satisfying to have it in a magazine.

On another note ( reading your comment on the niche post) Thérèse is quite dramatic but generally the Malles are very well behaved. October 15, 2012 at 4:36pm Reply

    • Victoria: 🙂 Now, I might as well admit that the photo was taken on the kitchen table, since the bedroom where I keep my “current rotation” perfumes is too dark on overcast days for photography.

Thank you! I’m very happy, especially since it’s in a magazine I’ve enjoyed for quite some years.

Speaking of Malle, whenever I wear Parfum de Therese, I wonder why I don’t wear it more often. It’s such a beautiful fragrance. At one point, I used to wear its polar opposite in terms of drama, En Passant, but I haven’t revisited it in a while. October 15, 2012 at 4:56pm Reply

      • Austenfan: Thérèse is the only Malle I own that I wear quite regularly. I also own En Passant, Angéliques sous la Pluie and Carnal Flower esp. the first two are only worn very seldom.

Is the new place a good change? October 15, 2012 at 5:07pm Reply

        • Victoria: I have a bunch of carded samples that I got with some order at Barneys’, and I just took them out and left them on my dresser. This will inspire me to wear them more often. I’m curious which ones I’m going to prefer these days. Who knows, perhaps I will change my mind and will find more of them “big wow.”

The new place is making a big difference! I can’t even begin to say how much having our own little corner is helping us feel better. I realized recently that I’ve spent the first few months here in a permanent state of anxiety and worry. This is receding, thankfully. October 15, 2012 at 5:16pm Reply

          • Austenfan: That is good news indeed. I once read in an interview with a psychotherapist that moving house is exceedingly disruptive, it takes most people at least a year to settle again. I am especially happy as weatherwise it will be less pleasant the next few months, but having a room of one’s own makes all the difference.

I bought myself Carnal Flower this summer and the lovely lady at Senteurs d’Ailleurs gave me quite a few Malle samples. Iris Poudre, Portrait of a Lady and Noir Epices. ( plus another CF sample, “pour mettre dans mon sac”) October 15, 2012 at 5:34pm Reply

            • Victoria: I also read that moving is as traumatic as death or divorce. And we’ve moved three times over the past few months. 🙂

What a thoughtful gesture, but I’m not surprised, because Senteurs d’Ailleurs is known for its great customer service. October 16, 2012 at 8:52am Reply

  • Lynn Morgan: Congrats, Victoria- this is absolutely lovely and as always your thoughts on perfume and style and life are thought-provocking and delightful. When does the book come out? October 15, 2012 at 5:50pm Reply

  • Annikky: I almost missed the plane today, hunting for the magazine. My main issue with the Signature Scent ideal is not the idea as such, but the way it makes people (at least some people, sometimes) experience perfume. I think it forces them to “sniff to dismiss”, to try things in a negative way – if it’s not perfect, you move right on; everything that is not The One, is by default a failure, a frustration. While having a broader view lets you enjoy so many different things without the burden of finding the essence of you in one fragrance. Instead of looking for flaws, you look for something to like. And you can find something to like almost in everything. (Airports make me philosophical, it seems). October 15, 2012 at 5:54pm Reply

    • Annikky: I copied my comment straight from the Facebook and I am very tired – hence the accidental and unnecessary fondness for my own name. October 15, 2012 at 5:57pm Reply

      • Victoria: No worries, I’ve fixed it. October 16, 2012 at 8:56am Reply

    • Victoria: I love how you’ve put it, Annikky. The best part of perfume is enjoying scents rather than picking “is this me or not?” Because the scents, even the ones that aren’t for us, are exciting, a boost, a simple pleasure. I sometimes drop my one of those run-of-the-mill perfumeries during the day, spray on some perfume on the blotter and walk around with it as I run my errands. Even something as predictable as Britney Spears Curious can be fun! October 16, 2012 at 8:55am Reply

October 16, 2012 at 8:19am Reply

    • Victoria: Thank you so much, Lynne Marie! Boxeuses is described as a dark leather, but I don’t find it all that dark or butch at all. To me, it’s a warmer, smokier cousin of Bois de Violette, my favorite from Lutens. A perfect warm perfume on a rainy day. October 16, 2012 at 9:09am Reply

  • Carla: Wonderful, congratulations! I am always amazed at the tacky, horrible perfume ads in Vogue, which is supposed to be high-style. Nicky Minaj – or whatever her name is, for example. And the Katy Perry ads always made me cringe. I don’t get it. But I guess the ads make sense, if those houses want to spend the money – I’m glad the niche houses spend it on the juice. But even in the magazine content, the bar is set far too low for perfume. Vogue fashion is so, well, stylish and beautiful, but the perfumes they tout are not at all. I hope women will pay more attention to their perfume. It is a pleasure that keeps on giving. October 16, 2012 at 10:49am Reply

    • Victoria: That’s what always dismays me! The ads I understand, that’s what magazines need to survive, but when you read the recommendations, it can be so ludicrous. As you point out, the magazine may exhort women to spend $$$ on their clothes and then they recommend them some cheap juice. Doesn’t make sense at all. October 16, 2012 at 3:07pm Reply

I too was a perfume monogamist for years. One precious bottle at a time, and when that was exhausted, I would agonize over what I wanted my life to smell like after that.

But this summer, I decided to organize my collection of samples and decants in something other than my junk drawer. The result was two overflowing SemiKolon media boxes.

The subsequent result? A need to do some catch up bottle-wise 🙂 Bad for the bank account, but being bad smells so good 🙂 October 17, 2012 at 11:01pm Reply

    • Victoria: “Bad for the bank account, but being bad smells so good”–once again, thank you for a smile.

  • Maureen: Victoria–I finally found this! I was looking for it specifically for your article (I’d actually never seen this particular magazine before).

I just really appreciate your idea of a ‘well edited’ fragrance wardrobe. From a purely practical point of view it makes things simpler–and more financially reasonable, but what I think I like best is the idea of finding what we each truly love instead of just consuming everything we can find.

    Thanks! November 22, 2012 at 3:49pm Reply

    • Victoria: Maureen, thank you very much for your thoughts!
