Recommend Me a Perfume (and a contest)

I receive quite a few emails every day asking me to recommend a perfume, and today I thought that it would be more fun if those who would like a perfume recommendation could post their requests  as comments in this thread. I encourage everyone else to reply to the comments and recommend fragrances that you think would be suitable. Or answer someone else’s burning perfume questions.

The contest for 3 samples is closed (I will announce the winner next week), but please continue giving your recommendations–there are several interesting requests towards the bottom of the thread!

Those who *want a recommendation* should wait till the next week for another round of this fun game. Thank you for participating!

So, let’s play!

  • Caro: Sounds like fun, Victoria. When do we start? October 6, 2012 at 9:10am Reply

    • Victoria: Once people start posting their own questions/recommendations in this thread, click “reply” under their comment and post away. And of course, if you want a recommendation yourself, post it too (as a separate comment). October 6, 2012 at 9:27am Reply

      • Caro: Thank you October 6, 2012 at 9:28am Reply

  • Nikki: How fun! Ok, so we just start recommending perfumes, V? October 6, 2012 at 9:19am Reply

  • Heather: I would like a recommendation please! I love the smell of old-fashioned lipsticks, rose and violet, but I didn’t like Lipstick Rose because it’s too powdery… ditto YSL Paris which is another well-known rose/violet combo. Can someone recommend some fragrances along these lines for me to try without the powder? October 6, 2012 at 9:24am Reply

    • Caro: Heather, how about the (awfully named) Putain des Palaces? La Rose de Rosine and Citizen Queen are two of my most-often-worn in this category.
As for mainstream, the traditional Bulgari pour Femme is quite satisfying too. October 6, 2012 at 9:31am Reply

      • Caro: And another rose-violet combo which is not powdery, but aldehydic, with a retro feel is Bond’s Broadway Nite. October 6, 2012 at 9:41am Reply

        • Elisa: I second Broadway Nite, which I have described before as “Lipstick Rose on steroids.” You might also like Une Rose Vermeille by Andy Tauer, which is an edible, berry-tinged rose with some violets and aldehydes. October 6, 2012 at 12:19pm Reply

      • Nicole: Bulgari Pour Femme is divine…its my summer fragrance. The description of violet and rose is what interested me in trying it, and I just love it. The only problem (for me) with it, is that I lose the smell of it quite quickly. Like within a week of wearing it, however at the end of the day when I get into bed, I get whiffs and wafts of it. So I know its still there…its odd but delicious. October 7, 2012 at 6:27pm Reply

    • Nikki: Try Iris Poudre by Editions de Parfums, perfect femininity in a bottle! October 6, 2012 at 9:50am Reply

    • karin: Balenciaga Paris, L’Artisan Drole de Rose, or Dior New Look 1947? October 6, 2012 at 9:59am Reply

    • Allison: Le Baiser by Lalique might be worth tracking down. To me it is similar to YSL Paris but not as heavy. October 6, 2012 at 10:05am Reply

    • Anne: Have you tried Love by Chloe? It has that lipstick scent that you might be looking for. It has a divine luxurious cosmetic smell about it. And some rice vapour at the end. October 6, 2012 at 10:09am Reply

    • Maria: If you haven’t tried it, I would recommend YSL “Parisienne”. Rose, violets, and a “vinyl” note to mimic the scent of a make up bag. It’s also some red berries.. quite sweet, but fresh. October 6, 2012 at 10:14am Reply

      • Maria: Just wanted to add that I have tried Paris and found it too sweet; but Parisienne suited me much better. I sometimes layer it with Paul Smith “Rose” which is a very affordable rose scent, makes me think of old fashioned roses in a rose garden. And layered with Parisienne it makes me feel like I’m in a fragrant rose garden after a rain 🙂 October 6, 2012 at 10:18am Reply

    • allgirlmafia: Heather, have you tried Chanel Eau Premiere? Its got the Rose and Violet, a slight powder but not overwhelming. To me this perfume smells like makeup. October 6, 2012 at 10:26am Reply

    • RVB: Try 1889 Moulin Rouge by Histories Parfums-it’s supposed to be reminiscent of a a makeup room backstage at the Moulin Rouge. It has a pronounced rose/violet smell without too much powder and interesting additions of a touch of cinnamon and absinthe.I highly recommend it October 6, 2012 at 10:28am Reply

    • Marcella: VECCHI ROSSETTI by Hilde Soliani it’s definitely a rose and violet scent without the powder of the others. October 6, 2012 at 10:32am Reply

    • may: L’Occitane Delice des Fleurs 🙂 October 6, 2012 at 10:53am Reply

    • Sujaan: I too cannot handle a powder note in perfume. My new favorite rose without powder is Atelier Rose Anonyme. I hope you love it as much as I do. October 6, 2012 at 11:16am Reply

      • Katie C: I was just about to say Rose Anonyme! October 6, 2012 at 11:19am Reply

    • Heather: Thank you everyone for these wonderful suggestions. I can’t wait to test them out! ~ Heather October 6, 2012 at 11:35am Reply

    • Andrea: I would recommend Sonoma Scent Studio’s Cameo. It is rose and violet, and smells just as you would describe “lipstick”. They have samples, try their website! This is a bit “off” of the lipstick path, but Diptyque Ombré Dans L’Eau might also be pleasing to you. October 6, 2012 at 2:27pm Reply

    • Domestic Goblin: Heather, there is a perfume called “Alizée” by Detaille. This is their website: http://detaille.com/gamme-femme-alizee.html October 6, 2012 at 4:13pm Reply

    • solanace: I’d recommend Andy Tauer’s Une Rose Vermeille. It has roses and violets (along with other stuff), and is not powdery to my nose. October 6, 2012 at 4:33pm Reply

    • sara: What about “la Rose Légère” Parfums de Rosine or Carita Eau de Parfums, a delicious violet not too powdery. Regards October 6, 2012 at 4:39pm Reply

    • D: Another main stream approach would be the Balenciaga Paris, one of the most beautiful violets. October 7, 2012 at 9:38am Reply

    • Margaret Tolliver: I don’t think these have been mentioned but they might contain some of essentials you desire:
1.) Noble Rose of Afghanistan The 7 Virtues for women
2.)Arpege Lanvin for women October 7, 2012 at 12:29pm Reply

    • sherapop: Have you tried ELdO Putain des Palaces? October 7, 2012 at 3:24pm Reply

  • Victoria: I will add my own question too! 🙂 Please recommend me a perfume with a licorice note. I’ve been craving anything anise, licorice these days, and I would love some suggestions. October 6, 2012 at 9:29am Reply

    • Nikki: Yves Rocher’s Reglisse October 6, 2012 at 9:48am Reply

      • Victoria: Haven’t tried it, so onto my list it goes! Thank you. October 6, 2012 at 10:36am Reply

    • Allison: Hi Victoria,
My husband has been wearing Anice by Etro lately and it smells amazing, it’s a very simple and linear composition. And very cheerful!
I tried Eclipse by Parfums Nicolai which is supposed to have anise along with lily of the valley, basil, black pepper and oak moss, but it just didn’t agree with me. October 6, 2012 at 9:51am Reply

      • Victoria: Oh, thank you! I completely forgot about these two, so I’m going to look for samples. October 6, 2012 at 10:36am Reply

      • Austenfan: Second Anice, gorgeous and very wearable. October 6, 2012 at 2:55pm Reply

    • Heather: This may be a little off-base, but my nose seems to interpret absinthe notes as anice, so along those lines I will recommend SL Douce Amere and Amouage Memoir (Woman). October 6, 2012 at 9:59am Reply

      • Victoria: Your nose is completely right, Heather! Most absinthe accord use anise or licorice notes, so I will try those. I love Douce Amere–that’s what got me hooked on anise, but I will revisit Memoir. October 6, 2012 at 10:38am Reply

        • Daisy: I was just thinking Memoir too! I also thought of L’Artisan’s Méchant Loup. It’s been awhile since I smelled it, but I do remember licorice . . . October 6, 2012 at 11:37am Reply

          • Victoria: Oh, Mechant Loup is so addictive with those chestnut honey notes! I’m craving it now. October 6, 2012 at 3:13pm Reply

    • karin: Guerlain Myrrh & Delires. October 6, 2012 at 10:03am Reply

      • Victoria: That’s such a great perfume! Might be perfect for these cold, rainy days. October 6, 2012 at 10:38am Reply

    • Anne: have you tried Jo Malone Vanille Anise? It is very very pretty. October 6, 2012 at 10:11am Reply

      • Victoria: I have a decant of it someplace. Off to unpack some of my boxes and find it. Thank you for giving me a push to get organized, Anne. 🙂 October 6, 2012 at 10:38am Reply

      • maggiecat: Seconding this Jo Malone pick. I’m not fond of licorice as a note, but thought this was delightful in spite of that. October 7, 2012 at 8:08pm Reply

    • RVB: Hi Victoria-have you tried Reglisse Noire by 1000 Flowers? It has a striking black licorice note that I would describe as cozy and warm surrounded by ginger, patchouli, shiso leaf ,vanilla and musk.I highly recommend it. October 6, 2012 at 10:22am Reply

      • Victoria: I haven’t tried it yet, but Elisa mentioned it yesterday, and I’m waiting for a sample to arrive. Your description is irresistible! October 6, 2012 at 10:39am Reply

        • Elisa: Oh I’m glad you ordered a sample! I hope you love it.

My other favorite licorice perfume so far is Lolita Lempicka au Masculin. Gourmand fougere! October 6, 2012 at 12:21pm Reply

          • Victoria: I love licorice notes in Lolita Lempicka, so I will try the masculine version again. I remember liking it a lot when I first tried it. Thank you again, Elisa. October 6, 2012 at 3:14pm Reply

      • Ferris: Your description sounds tantalizing ! Makes want to try it too! October 6, 2012 at 10:20pm Reply

    • Lucas: Victoria, I see you’re looking for licorice. My suggestions are Penhaligon’s Eau Sans Pareil, 1000 Flowers Reglisse Noire and Caron Eau de Reglisse October 6, 2012 at 11:30am Reply

      • Victoria: Thank you, Lucas! Penhaligon’s one is new to me. October 6, 2012 at 3:15pm Reply

    • Asali: I too love a good licorice note and Douce Amere is one of my favorites. I’m sure you already thought of it, but since I’m enjoying everyone’s suggestions I’ll write mine too:-) Un bois Vanille and Myrrhiad both are comfort scents with anise – uBV always makes me think of licorice allsorts. For a lighter take, I like Aimez-moi and original LPRN ( I know that not many liked it- but I love the licorice in this one).
How much fun this is October 6, 2012 at 12:21pm Reply

      • Asali: Oh and forgot another great which is saliisssiiissimo (hope I got the spelling right there) October 6, 2012 at 1:17pm Reply

      • Victoria: Asali, thank you for reminding me about some of these. I have a sample of UBV, so I’m smelling it right now. Mmmmm October 6, 2012 at 3:19pm Reply

    • Claudia: I love Hilde Soliani Tutti Matti per Colorno. Surrender to Chance had it in a sampler pack and it’s beautiful with its fennel notes. October 6, 2012 at 12:56pm Reply

      • Victoria: Thank you very much, Claudia! October 6, 2012 at 3:20pm Reply

    • loledinburgh: Hi Victoria,
I second Eclipse by PDNicolai,is a beauty and when I smell it I do get two colours/smells in the same wrist dependind on how far is from my nose. October 6, 2012 at 1:09pm Reply

      • Victoria: You’re right! I just smelled it, and anise just bloomed out of the lily and jasmine accord. So beautiful! October 6, 2012 at 3:21pm Reply

    • Poodle: Reglisse Noire by 1000 Flowers. It’s my favorite licorice. You don’t have to try hard to find the licorice note in it. I love it. October 6, 2012 at 2:36pm Reply

      • Victoria: Thank you for another vote of confidence! Can’t wait to receive my sample. October 6, 2012 at 3:22pm Reply

    • Austenfan: Histoires de Parfums 1726 has quite a lot of anise. Plus it is a great fragrance.
Did you ever try Anisia Bella? A simple green anise, less sweet than the Etro. October 6, 2012 at 2:57pm Reply

      • Victoria: I’ve tried it before, but I don’t have on hand anymore. I recall that it smelled temptingly of pastis! 🙂 October 6, 2012 at 3:23pm Reply

    • Divya: How about Aqua Allegoria Anisia Bella by Guerlain? I haven’t tried it myself but the ingredient sort of pull me towards it… star anise, jasmine, licorice and Cedarwood. Also, I just noticed the flower I’ve been writing about smells alot like anise! October 6, 2012 at 3:38pm Reply

    • Anna Minis: Palais jamais October 6, 2012 at 4:37pm Reply

    • sara: I love Minuit Noir by Lolita Lempicka or even Annick Goutal’s Mandragore Pourpre with star anises. October 6, 2012 at 4:46pm Reply

    • Michele: Victoria, have you ever tried Parfumerie Generale’s Drama Nuui? There is a definite licorice note in it. October 6, 2012 at 4:54pm Reply

    • Nina Z: Well, this is very obvious, but no one as mentioned it so far: Brin de Réglisse

On me it smells much more like licorice than lavendar. October 6, 2012 at 5:45pm Reply

      • Cybele: I second Brin de Reglisse, I find it very sexy and it’s the only licorice I like so far. October 6, 2012 at 7:24pm Reply

    • Sibylle: Have you ever tried Pyrgos by Sigilli? Top notes are lavender, fennel, orange and bergamot, heart and drydown feature aniseed, cinnamon and oregano. It’s soooo warm, like a summer afternoon condensed. October 6, 2012 at 6:01pm Reply

    • Joaquim: And what about O’driù’s Ladamo? Some thick stuff, a very dark licorice but curiously…doesn’t has any licorice note, it’s one of the most challenging scents i’ve tried (and a very beautiful immortelle too).
The sample program of O’driù is top notch, the package if full of details and the price is much more than reasonable, a must try line! October 6, 2012 at 7:21pm Reply

    • Ann C.: Have you tried Myrrhiad by Huitieme Art? It’s supposed to have a licorice note. October 6, 2012 at 8:47pm Reply

    • Cheryl: Greetings, Victoria. My favorite licorice note is in Bvlgari Jasmin Noir. It is such a beautiful floral woody fragrance. It’s not a candy licorice, but rather a deep earthy root tea. When I first inhaled Jasmin Noir, my mind kept wondering to “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” I imagine this may sound silly to some, but it seemed the fragrance of the fragrance of such a forest.
I also enjoy the Anise note in Gaultier Classique. It definitely adds interest to the powdery rose notes. Good luck! October 6, 2012 at 11:27pm Reply

    • hongkongmom: anisa bella aa guerlain! October 7, 2012 at 3:28am Reply

    • Amer: I’m sure you have these but here goes: Caron’s Eau de Reglisse, Guerlain’s Myrrhe and Delires (myrrh has an anisic vibe to me, better than anise itself), Lutens’ un Bois Vanille and Boxeuses… and ok, Hermessence too. October 7, 2012 at 7:01am Reply

      • Amer: just thought that absinthe note might do the trick as well. Have you tried Les fleurs du Mal, Absinthe? And of course Fou d’Absinthe by l’Artisan (supposedly for men only but I know you don’t exclude) … hope this helps October 7, 2012 at 7:06am Reply

    • Asali: And then I just realised that I forgot my very favourite of the lot; HdP 1826, wonderful anise and violet and soft amber. October 7, 2012 at 8:33am Reply

    • D: Perfume brands sometime use the word “absinthe” to connote the same smell as anise or liquorice. The most full bodied “absinthe” fragrance, to my mind, is A Taste of Heaven

    • nozknoz: Fendi Theorema and Armani Prive Ambre Soie, both by Christine Nagel, are beautiful ambers with an anice note.

Love your idea for this post! ~~nozknoz October 7, 2012 at 11:39am Reply

    • Jill S: Try Jo Malone Vanilla Anise (I believe) that’s it. October 7, 2012 at 1:33pm Reply

      • Anna Minis: Maybe Yvresse? October 8, 2012 at 6:04am Reply

        • Victoria: Thank you, Anna and everyone else! I have a long list of great perfumes to revisit and some new scents to explore. October 8, 2012 at 10:32am Reply

          • rosiegreen: I concur with the Anisa Bella recommendation. It is very fresh and green with a lovely licorice note. It is great for summer and times when you just want a light fragrance. October 9, 2012 at 7:19pm Reply

    • Lynn Morgan: The San Francisco-based niche perfumer Vapothecary makes a perfume oil called… wait for it…. “Shroud”. It starts off smelling like absinthe in a dusty bottle and dries down to a soft, but dry floral. Very Gothic and decadent. October 8, 2012 at 5:58pm Reply

  • Mirian: Oh i like this. Well I’ve been in love with Bond no. 9 signature scent, but it is just way too much for me at $340. Can someone recommend me something like it, but max $200? It’s notes are tonka, musk, oud, and rose. It’s really soft, creamy, and luxurious and i’ve been aching for something like it. October 6, 2012 at 9:31am Reply

    • Victoria: How about Costes ($80 for 50ml)? It is more incense than Bond no 9, but it’s so beautiful and warm. October 6, 2012 at 10:25am Reply

    • Barbara: Have you tried Montal Aoud Queen Roses? I normally don’t like oud, but this one was so good. October 6, 2012 at 11:53am Reply

  • Patt: OK, I’ll play :). I love the idea of a smoky incense fragrance for fall, but am overwhelmed by the big guns such as Patchouli 24. Can anyone recommend a scent that has more incense than Seville a l’Aube, but (much) less than Patch 24 and that would work well for autumn in New England? October 6, 2012 at 9:45am Reply

    • Nikki: Creed’s Angelique Encens October 6, 2012 at 9:47am Reply

    • Paola: Avignon by Comme des Garçons. October 6, 2012 at 9:49am Reply

    • Dubaiscents: Try the new Volutes by Diptyque – smokey but, not overly so – perfect for fall. The king of smokiness is Interlude Man (in my book) but, this is pretty over the top 🙂 October 6, 2012 at 10:14am Reply

      • Dubaiscents: Oh, and I just remembered Exhale by LUSH. Also a great smokey scent and a great price! October 6, 2012 at 10:16am Reply

      • Victoria: 2nd Volutes, especially the warm Eau de Parfum version. October 6, 2012 at 10:45am Reply

        • Patt: I just bought a 6 ml decant during a daily special at STC, and am loving it! Once it is gone I may have to go the full bottle route 🙂 October 23, 2012 at 12:02pm Reply

    • Victoria: If you want more incense and like orange blossom, how about my favorite, by Kilian Sweet Redemption? October 6, 2012 at 10:45am Reply

      • Kandice: I would second this recommendation. This is my new favorite fragrance. The combination of orange blossom and incense is amazing without being overwhelming. (I have trouble with powdery scents as well. The tend to trigger headaches when I wear them.) October 6, 2012 at 2:59pm Reply

    • RVB: Try Winter Woods by Sonoma Scent Studio ,Fille en Aiguilles by Serge Lutens,Paestum Rose by Eau d’Italie or my all time favorite L’air du Desert Marocain by Andy Tauer(although that might be a little heavy on the incense for you but nonetheless a striking perfume) October 6, 2012 at 10:48am Reply

    • Leah: Hi Patt – for me, Serge Lutens Gris Clair has a lovely balance of smoky incense and pale lavendar with a slight bright twist. It is such a warm, comforting blend that I especially love it on a dark day. It has enough complexity to be interesting but is less challenging than some of his other scents (which I also love). Perfect for a cozy, fall NE day. October 6, 2012 at 11:08am Reply

    • silverdust: Henri Bendel’s Fireside is gorgeous. I layer it over a cedar/saffron dry-oil and the compliments start coming! When my moody teenage daughter says, “You smell good,” it must be making an impression! October 6, 2012 at 11:22am Reply

      • rosiegreen: Saffron where do you get a cedar/saffron dry oil ?
It sounds delicious. October 9, 2012 at 7:21pm Reply

    • Sujaan: Ooh, absolutely try Chantecaille Kalimantan. Great incense! October 6, 2012 at 11:26am Reply

      • Elena: I think Kalimantan is lovely and subtly incense-y. I am waiting for colder weather to wear it to snuggle into! Definitely try. They carry it at my Nordstrom’s so perhaps it won’t be too difficult for you to track down. October 6, 2012 at 12:39pm Reply

    • Lucas: Patt, how about Comme des Garcons Incense Series Kyoto? To my nose it’s the least incensy scent in this line, really nice for those who want to wear incense but don’t want to smell like church. October 6, 2012 at 11:32am Reply

      • Daisy: I love Kyoto too and find it the most wearable of all the ones in the Incense series. So fresh! October 6, 2012 at 11:39am Reply

    • Patt: Thanks for all of your great suggestions! October 6, 2012 at 1:37pm Reply

    • Poodle: I think Trayee has a nice understated incense note. It’s there but it’s not overwhelming. October 6, 2012 at 2:38pm Reply

    • Lynne Marie: My favorite incense is Histoires de Parfums 1740, but that turns kind of “big guns” on some people. Maybe Parfumerie Generale’s Wazamba? On me it turns into incense with apple – pretty yummy, especially in the fall. October 6, 2012 at 3:37pm Reply

      • Elisa: Small note — Wazamba is actually by Parfums d’Empire. I love the fruity note in this one too! October 8, 2012 at 11:03am Reply

    • Alityke: Armani Prive Bois D’Encens is the most pure and beautiful altar incense I have come across but comes at a price. It is incredibly wearable. More affordable in the same genre of incense is Comme de Garçon Avignon.
Or try and ind some YSL Nu less of an incense soliflore October 6, 2012 at 3:37pm Reply

    • AubreyZ: Are you looking for something sweet or dry? If you are looking for dry, I highly recommend IUNX Eau Sento. It’s hard to find, but it’s the *perfect* dry incense and wood fragrance, with a great mood (meditative and calm). October 6, 2012 at 3:53pm Reply

    • Anna Minis: Dzonghka October 6, 2012 at 4:38pm Reply

    • Janet in California: By Kilian Incense Oud. More incense than oud and truly luscious. October 6, 2012 at 4:52pm Reply

      • nozknoz: This is a good idea, and, in fact, the original BK Pure Oud might fill the bill. October 7, 2012 at 11:43am Reply

    • Nina Z: Annayake Miyako. It’s a warm, ambery incense that is much more sheer than other incense frags. You can find it very cheap on ebay right now, though it is sent from France. I bought a bottle and it’s gorgeous (and I caused a number of other perfume friends to buy it as well–everyone is very happy with it). Another possibility is Keiko Mecheri Oliban (oliban means frankincense). It’s a comforting frankincense with rose, etc., though I prefer Miyako. A lot of the Amouage scents have frankincense in them. Epic is gorgeous but expensive. October 6, 2012 at 5:50pm Reply

    • solanace: Amouage Dia man is not sharp or masculine at all, and hasthe most lovely incense. October 6, 2012 at 7:06pm Reply

    • Amer: Etro’s messe de minuit? I find this perfect for autumn October 7, 2012 at 7:09am Reply

    • Perfumista8: How about ELDO Fat Electrician? It’s a beautiful, subtle incense. October 7, 2012 at 1:26pm Reply

    • Carla: The only scent I can think of where I get light incense in the background is Iris Silver Mist. But Bulgari Black is a bit like Patchouli 24, and Dzing! is a bit like Black, but lighter, so maybe Dzing! Or Dzongka, closer to incense. If you can get to a l’Artisan counter, they may have something, because now I’m thinking of Safran Troublant…not really incense, but very fall-in-New-England, and not heavy. October 7, 2012 at 2:56pm Reply

      • Lynn Morgan: LeLabo also makes a gorgeous Sandalwood fragance. Isn’t there a Tom Ford sandalwood too? October 8, 2012 at 6:04pm Reply

    • Lynn Morgan: “Messe Minuit” (Midnight Mass ) by Etro is very sandalwood and smoky. Any of Loree Rodkin’s “Gothic” scents except for ‘Gothic III’ have a patchouli and incense note. The newest Chanel, Mademoiselle Coco Noire (?) has a Byzantine, incese note as well. October 8, 2012 at 6:02pm Reply

  • Nikki: I have been looking for a while for a perfume that combines French lavender, vanilla, honey and thyme…I found one in Apt, Provence, from a lavender boutique. They mentioned it smells like Eau de Caron, however, it smelled much better than that. It is the Thyme/Lavender note I am after…any suggestions? I love Jicky but it lacks the thyme scent… October 6, 2012 at 9:53am Reply

    • Victoria: Parfums de Nicolai Carre d’As has a beautiful thyme note. It’s more on the masculine side though. Astier de Villatte Eau Chic is a perfume that fits your description, but it might be difficult to find in the US. October 6, 2012 at 10:33am Reply

      • Nikki: Thank you, Victoria! Will track these down asap! October 6, 2012 at 10:50am Reply

    • Kathryn: Do try and track down Eau de Lavande by Annick Goutal. It’s such a gorgeous lavender fragrance. Really smooth and herbal. October 6, 2012 at 11:37am Reply

        • Nikki: Thank you, Anna Minis! Just bought it on e-bay, always wanted to try it. It is so reasonably priced. Thanks for the suggestion ! October 6, 2012 at 5:18pm Reply

    • nozknoz: You might try Diptyque Virgilio and Parfums MDCI Chypre Palatin. My favorite lavender is BK A Taste of Heaven, but I don’t think it has that sharpness of thyme – still might be worth trying, though. ~~ nozknoz October 7, 2012 at 11:47am Reply

      • Nikki: Thank you nozknoz, a taste of Heaven sounds lovely, will try it…! October 7, 2012 at 4:39pm Reply

    • Carla: I remember Virgilio at a Diptyque in Paris as very herbal and green, but I think it’s now only sold in Paris stores. October 7, 2012 at 2:59pm Reply

  • Shaney: This is fun! This might be an odd way to describe what I’m looking for, but here goes:

I want a perfume that is like walking in the damp woods under a full moon. Not too dry, not too harsh, something I could actually wear to bed at night if I wanted to. I feel like the woods should be tempered by something creamy, but not sweet.

    Suggestions? October 6, 2012 at 10:16am Reply

    • Anne: Have you tried jo Malone Amber and Lavender. It is spicy and has to me that moon light smell (cold, mossy, dam) and this is soften by the amber. It is very lovely and quite light. It is originally meant to be more of a masculine scent, but personally I find it very alluring and elegant and absolutely appropriate for woman. It has been my little black dress scent. • shaney: Thank you! I can’t wait to try it! It sounds gorgeous! October 6, 2012 at 11:03am Reply

      • MB: Someone gave me Amber and Lavender as a gift and it has never taken me longer to fall in love w/ a scent but when I fell I fell hard. Now I can’t live w/o it. October 6, 2012 at 4:46pm Reply

    • Jack Sullivan: Not sure how well the full moon would fit into the picture, but the “walk in the woods” and “creamy but not sweet” parts match my own description of Olfactive Studio Autoportrait. Plus, it would not prevent you from sleeping, since it is very gentle. October 6, 2012 at 10:48am Reply

      • rosarita: Yes, it’s stunning! This was my first thought. October 6, 2012 at 11:21am Reply

    • Victoria: Creamy woods is one of my favorite categories. I would recommend Serge Lutens Bois et Musc. It’s not as popular as some others from its “Bois” series, but it’s wonderful.

Then there is Diptyque Tam Dao, 10 Corso Como, Costes 2 (more rose though, not sure if you like that), Atelier Cologne Bois Blonds. October 6, 2012 at 11:13am Reply

    • Sujaan: I’m not sure if this is what you mean, but how about PdN Odalisque? October 6, 2012 at 11:33am Reply

    • Lucas: Shaney, did you try SSS Forest Walk, it’s really realistic smelling perfume evoking a forest, and there’s something dark, nighty to it. October 6, 2012 at 11:33am Reply

    • Roberta: Hi Shaney, how about L’Ombre dans L’Eau, from Diptyque? It certainly smells “green and fresh” (my husband says it reminds him of walking in the woods at dusk). I prefer the Eau de Partum over the Eau de Toillet. And I love to wear the moisturizer to bed. Hope this is helpful! October 6, 2012 at 11:48am Reply

    • cryptic: Ormonde Jayne Woman might work for you. It smells like a pine forest, but is tempered with a very nice amber, which makes it a nice choice to wear to bed. It is pricey, though. October 6, 2012 at 12:30pm Reply

  • Anne: Oh I love this post!!! Genius idea Victoria! And how proud do I feel to have posted a recommendation for victoria!!!! 😉

I recently smelled Creed Vanille Sublime….. And I feel in love with it. It is very pretty and definitely not a foody vanilla. It is not the usual heady ( and sometime sickly vanilla scent). It felt very comforting as a scent. like a warm ray of sunshine behind the window on a cold winter day….

But it has a huge price tag on it , so I am looking for something along the same feel. As anyone got any suggestion?
Many thanks. October 6, 2012 at 10:16am Reply

    • Victoria: Anne, I haven’t tried Sublime Vanille, but reading the descriptions reminded me of Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur. Have you tried it? October 6, 2012 at 10:44am Reply

      • Anne: Ok, will definitely have to sample this Musc Ravager, you are not the first one who recommend this to me. I am scared by the Musc name…. I have a love/ hate relationship with musc. I don t mind a little, but if it is in too much quantity, it really goes bad on me and smell like an unaired, overheated and way too over sweet old people’s home (sorry about the image, but it really all that came up to my mind). October 6, 2012 at 11:11am Reply

        • Victoria: Don’t be scared, Ann! It has lots of dark, rich vanilla, and musk is really soft and creamy. October 6, 2012 at 11:14am Reply

    • Asali: I haven’t tried Sublime Vanille, but from the citrus- vanilla of SV, I thought of SHT’s perfect vanilla, which is blood orange and vanilla. Still foody too, though… October 6, 2012 at 12:40pm Reply

    • Farawayspices: I’m not familiar with the Creed Vanille (it’s been awhile since I smelled it, anyway), but a nice, simple, gentle, sweet but not cloying vanilla is Pacifica Island Vanilla. I find it to be just right for cooler weather. October 6, 2012 at 1:34pm Reply

    • Ula Rakusova: If you have access to a Yves Rocher store, try their Vanille Noire of the Secrets D’Essences range – it is a very pretty, straightforward dry vanilla and it’s cheap.
btw, I tried Sublime Vanille and was disappointed, I don’t know whether I’m anosmic, but it was so faint, have to give it another try October 6, 2012 at 4:43pm Reply

    • RVB: Try Havana Vanille (now known as Vanille Absolument) by L’Artisan Parfumeur. It’s a dark boozy vanilla with an incense undertone-very unique October 7, 2012 at 12:30am Reply

    • Lynn Morgan: ‘Sublime” by Patou is also a yummy vanilla scent, and Loree Rodkin’s “Gothic II” has a gorgeous vanilla underlying the sandalwood and patchouli. BVLGARI “Jasmine Noir” always strikes me and more vanilla than floral; it’s very rich and custardly and sexy. October 8, 2012 at 6:07pm Reply

      • Lynn Morgan: Sorry- I forgot he vanilla to end all vanillas. Van Cleef & Arpels’ “Orchidee Vanille”. It’s glorious. October 8, 2012 at 6:11pm Reply

  • allgirlmafia: Heather, have you tried Chanel Eau Premiere? Its got the Rose and Violet, a slight powder but not overwhelming. To me this perfume smells like makeup.
Thank you for this V, this is perfect. Ladies please recommend me a fragrance (or three). I want a decidedly feminine fragrance with an understated elegance. Full of substance. She won’t scream cleavage and bombshell, but instead she is alluring, draws you near, makes you wonder what it is about her. I call it my Jane Eyre perfume. Full of longing and sensuality. So far I like Chanel Eau Premiere, Prada Infusion D’ Iris and Glamourous by Ralph Lauren. Can you recommend something for me? October 6, 2012 at 10:23am Reply

    • Victoria: What an interesting “perfume brief”! Ok, I will give it a try. How about Chanel No 18 (rose, ambrette, cool-warm constrast)? Also, I’m wearing Ann Gerard Cuir de Nacre right now (iris, suede, soft, elegant), and it fits your description so well. Or Hermes Kelly Caleche? October 6, 2012 at 10:35am Reply

      • allgirlmafia: V, Chanel 18 sounds right up my alley. Amber and rose always smells so great together. Also The Cuir de Nacre would probably do me well. I LOVE the smell of leather/Suede with Iris. October 6, 2012 at 10:51am Reply

        • Victoria: Oh, another two along these lines–Bottega Veneta and Tom Ford Violet Blonde. Bottega Veneta is a soft, suede-iris, and Violet Blonde, despite its claims to be a bombshell, is an understated, elegant perfume. October 6, 2012 at 10:56am Reply

          • Elena: I second both of these, I was about to suggest both. No surprise, I found out about them from Victoria in the first place! Violet Blonde makes me feel quite sexy in an understated way, and Bottega Veneta is very elegant. Possibly Chanel 19, though I think it would be too confident for Jane Eyre. Maybe Jane would wear 19 at the end of the book, when they’re happily married? October 6, 2012 at 12:47pm Reply

          • allgirlmafia: Oh yes, Bottega Veneta is a beaut. Elegant, refined with just enough heft. She smells a bit linear on me tho… October 6, 2012 at 4:05pm Reply

            • Victoria: Then definitely try Cuir de Nacre! I wore it today again and it is quite multifaceted. I’m loving it. October 6, 2012 at 5:30pm Reply

    • rosarita: Chanel 31 Rue Cambon and Tom Ford White Patchouli are my favorite *effortless elegance* perfumes, but maybe you’re looking for something a little sexier? Norell or Theo Fennel Scent, applied lightly, have a mysterious and sexy edge (in my humble opinion.) October 6, 2012 at 11:20am Reply

    • Kathryn: Hmm… perhaps Fragonard by Fragonard. A really classic floral scent with honeysuckle, lily and jasmine. Or if you like tuberose, Jardins de Bagatelle by Guerlain. October 6, 2012 at 11:41am Reply

    • Jackie: Have you tried Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile or Roja Dove’s Scandal yet? Both of these are very pretty, sensual, fragrances. October 6, 2012 at 11:52am Reply

    • maja: understated, feminine is most definitely going to be Chanel 🙂 Chanel Rue Cambon or No18 are just pure elegance while Chanel Beige is so delicate yet alluring. October 6, 2012 at 11:58am Reply

    • Lynne Marie: Along the sames lines of Infusion D’Iris but with ( to me anyway) a greater air of mystery and allure is Annick Goutal’s Heure Exquise. The first time I smelled this I immediately thought: Ballgowns, assignations, moonlight, dark flashing eyes. A quietly magnetic femme fatale. October 6, 2012 at 3:44pm Reply

      • allgirlmafia: Yes! I was just browsing ALL of V’s reviews on Annick Goutal just yesterday. That is the next house I want to dive into. And Heure Exquise is gonna be first love, I know it! I’m also really interested in Serge Lutens. Thank you for reaffirming this for me 🙂 October 6, 2012 at 4:03pm Reply

    • Leah: Although tecnically a male scent, A*men by Thierry Mugler has a creamy cocoa/coffee component but is less sweet than its feminine counterpart. I borrow my husband’s every now and then. Chanel Coromandel also has a slight cocoa note but comes across as less gourmand than some of the others with chocolate notes. October 6, 2012 at 11:20am Reply

    • Lucas: Maria, Histoires de Parfums 1969 might be something you’re looking for – it’s chocolate and peach scent.

    • Victoria: Etat Libre d’Orange Rossy de Palma! It’s also reasonably priced for a niche line. I don’t remember the price on Frederic Malle Une Rose, but if you like your roses earthy, it’s a great choice. October 6, 2012 at 10:58am Reply

    • may: I’m new with perfumes, so I’m not sure how earthy smells like. Stella by Stella McCartney is a beautiful rose scent that you may try, it does not smell synthetic like D&G rose perfume. October 6, 2012 at 11:02am Reply

    • rosarita: L’Or De Torrente has deep rose and a hint of coffee, which is in the Tom Ford Cafe Rose. It’s becoming a bit hard to find but check the online discounters or ebay. I love earthy rose, too. Gres Cabaret is another online cheapie that smells wonderful. At a higher price point is Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Inner Sanctum, my HG dark rose. You might want to check out CJ Scents, too (google). She has some amazing roses and her prices are great (she’s a real sweetheart to deal with, too.)

    • JessicaD: A perfume I would recommend to people who like florals, and rose in particular, is Salvatore Ferragamo Incanto Bloom.

There is a rose undertone that is subtle and took me a little moment to catch up with it when I first smelled it at my local ULTA store. The perfume carries all the other notes so delicately and splendidly. It’s like an orchestral harmony slowly growing into a perfectly timed crescendo.

I find this perfume has sneaked into my heart without realizing it. I use it as a very grounding and reassuring scent on those days I am anxious or need to be at my best at work. I feel that it provides me a sense of femininity throughout the day as I catch a whiff on those days when I don’t feel very girly and need a pick-me up. It’s one of those perfumes that work well in summer and into the cooler months–at least for me, it’s a year round standby. October 6, 2012 at 12:05pm Reply

    • Carla: I just love your description. There’s a new Anna Karenina movie, you can wear it to watch. Theo Fennell, yes, if you can get it. I have the EdT and the EdP, which is my Holy Grail scent. It has florals and oriental aspects, but is not a floral oriental! Can anyone recommend me a leather scent that would make me feel good. It can’t be to heavy on the leather as I not always tolerate the note. My favourite which I’ll probably buy this winter is Cuir Ottoman from Parfum d’Empire but would love to hear about other possibilities.

I could also use a suggestion of complex lavender that will be also creamy and cozy. October 6, 2012 at 11:35am Reply

    • Victoria: For a creamy and cozy lavender, I would recommend by Kilian A Taste of Heaven. I also love the parfum version of Caron Pour un Homme. Also Tom Ford Lavender Palm, but it’s so expensive… October 6, 2012 at 12:15pm Reply

      • Lucas: I’m not familiar with many Kilians and this one is not exception. Will try it when I can.
I went from love to hate with my Pour Un Homme de Caron so I don’t see myself liking the Parfum version.
Lavender Palm sounds nice but TF Private Blends are not available in Poland at all… Boo.. October 6, 2012 at 1:30pm Reply

    • ana: Perfect creamy lavender is Kiki by Vero Kern. The most beautiful lavender I’ve ever tried. It’s gorgeous in extrait, but the eau de parfum has also a very lively fizzy, sexy quality which makes it even better than the parfum. Both suggestions are frightfully expensive though. Leather wise you can’t go wrong with Dzing. Very soft and sensual on top on being unusual and incofundable. Also Cuir de Lancome for a cooler version, more elegant and pulled together than Dzing which to me I have to say it’s sex in a bottle October 6, 2012 at 2:44pm Reply

      • Lucas: Thanks for suggestions. October 6, 2012 at 2:54pm Reply

    • Theresa: How about Andy Tauer’s Lonestar Memories? It is so soft and cozy, but leathery & smoky. And it smells even better after 6 hours than when you first apply! October 6, 2012 at 2:48pm Reply

      • Lucas: I need to revisit. October 6, 2012 at 2:55pm Reply

      • Poodle: I’m seconding Lonestar Memories. I don’t have many leathers but I’ll also recommend Whips and Roses by Kerosene and to my nose Habanita has a bit of leather. October 7, 2012 at 1:54pm Reply

    • Donald: I recommend the masterpiece KNIZE TEN very near of the old and vanished TABAC BLOND of Caron. Gomma of ETRO is interesting. Leather with spices and woods : YATAGAN of Caron. With moss : BANDIT of Robert Piguet. With tar and smoked tea: BLACK of Bulgari. With dry herbs : COMME DES GARçONS eau de parfum. And, for the drydown with thirst lemon and vanillia : HABIT ROUGE of Guerlain. October 6, 2012 at 4:00pm Reply

      • Lucas: Few of them sound interesting October 6, 2012 at 4:21pm Reply

    • Elle: I highly recommend Violet/Leather by OLO Fragrances, a tiny niche Portland brand. Available on their website: http://www.olofragrance.com October 6, 2012 at 4:30pm Reply

    • Michele: Lucas, for the leather fragrance, what about the unisex L’Artisan Traversee du Bosphore- some fruit notes, iris, leather, saffron, musk, vanilla. To me, it is a complex scent that changes beautifully over time – starts out with the fruit and more of a suede than leather note, then later, I smell the saffron, leather, and the sweet notes. It’s very unique. Also L’Artisan Dzing. For cozy lavender, I second Victoria’s suggetion of Kilian’s Straight to Heaven. I also like La Compagnie de Provence’s Incense Lavender. They have an amazing hand lotion that the men in my house used up (grrrrr). It definately had the warm/cozy lavender vibe. I know you know your stuff- can you recommend something for me that has apricot or honey? I love those notes (no patchouli, please). October 6, 2012 at 5:12pm Reply

      • Sujaan: SL Daim Blond has a great apricot note. October 6, 2012 at 8:34pm Reply

      • Lucas: I’m not Familiar with Traversee du Bosphore so I’ll check it out. Tried Dzing and don’t like it. Many L’Artisans don’t work for me.
I need to search for this La Compagnie you mentioned. Never heard of this brand.

For apricot you can try Osmanthus by Keiko Mecheri or Noel au Balcon by ELd’O.

For honey also Noel au Balcon, Chanel Beige, PG Iris Taizo (Iris Oriental) October 7, 2012 at 5:02am Reply

    • Carla: I feel like I’m giving away all my “secret” scents but perfume lovers are in fact so few and far between. Knize Ten is the most amazing leather, and it was so cheap when I bought it in Germany a few years ago. It always makes me feel so good. • sara: What about Bottega Venetta by Bottega Venetta?, leather and flowers for a beautiful mainstrean perfume. Regards October 8, 2012 at 4:30am Reply

  • Michele: Oooooo. I am so excited about this post!! I would love some recommendations for a fragrance. I love white flower scents, but I would like to try something a little different that really works well for fall and winter. My favorite scents are Beyond Love, Kelly Caleche, Lutens’ Datura Noir, and Botrytis (see I can stray from white flowers with success!). Obviously I love jasmine, neroli, and tuberose. I like vanilla, apricots, and musk too. I am aiming for medium sillage- I don’t want to assault others with fragrance, but I am frustrated by the one-sniff-oops-where-is-it types! I don’t like marine notes, blackberry, clove, anything too powdery or too sharp like passionfruit. I HATE patchouli- it actually makes me ill! I’m not big on Bond or Creed fragrances. (Oh my goodness, I sound like a crazy perfume snob, don’t I!) And, have I mentioned how excited I am about this post! October 6, 2012 at 11:36am Reply

    • Lucas: How about Fracas (big, white floral) or Chanel Gardenia (lighter, with neroli). I’m not sure how they’ll work in colder weather.
Will suggest more when somethin pops up in my head. October 6, 2012 at 11:40am Reply

      • Michele: Lucas, Fracas was too sweet for me. Chanel Gardenia sounds lovely though. Thanks. October 6, 2012 at 5:14pm Reply

    • Heather: PdN Number One? Lots of tuberose for your white flower, but the overall character is more of a rich floral bouquet. It’s got oomph and lasting power, and I think would be a good floral for the colder weather. October 6, 2012 at 11:49am Reply

      • Michele: I think Luckyscent carries that one. I will have to sample it. Thank you, Heather. October 6, 2012 at 5:15pm Reply

    • Victoria: by Kilian Love & Tears? Have you tried it, Michele?

May I also suggest L’Artisan Seville a l’Aube, which is a beautiful orange blossom. It starts out bright and citrusy, but the drydown is sultry and warm. I’m wearing it a lot these days, and it feels perfect for fall. In fact, I regret not adding it onto my fall favorites list. October 6, 2012 at 12:20pm Reply

      • Daisy: I am seriously considering a full bottle of Seville à l’aube. The drydown is divine! October 6, 2012 at 12:32pm Reply

      • Michele: Victoria, I have never tried Seville a L’Aube. I will have to hit Luckyscent and sample it. My last L’Artisan purchase was Traversee du Bosphore which I really like. Kilian’s Love and Tears is a wonderful suggestion for me. Thank you. October 6, 2012 at 5:17pm Reply

    • Elisa: DSH Tubereuse is a beautiful tuberose with a woody vanilla base that I think stands up to cooler weather. I’ve also heard some people say they like Carnal Flower best in winter. October 6, 2012 at 12:36pm Reply

      • Michele: Elisa, I will look into DSH Tubereuse. I love the combination of tuberose with woods and vanilla. Carnal Flower is a great winter scent. Sometimes the eucalyptis (darn, I can’t spell that word) in it bothers me a little. October 6, 2012 at 5:20pm Reply

    • Elle: Have you tried Do Son by Diptyque? It’s one of my favourites. October 6, 2012 at 4:32pm Reply

      • Michele: Hi Elle. So I guess you love white flowers as much as I do! I just finished a bottle of Do Son over the summer. It’s one of my favorites too! Thanks. October 6, 2012 at 7:45pm Reply

    • Nina Z: Chanel No 22, which is white flowers with incense. The incense really cuts the sweetness of the white flowers. (I don’t even like white flower fragrances, but I’ve become obsessed with 22.) Also check out Chanel 31 Rue Cambon, which a beautiful light amber fragrance. October 6, 2012 at 6:08pm Reply

      • Michele: Oh! I have never tried Chanel No 22. I bet the incense note might really make it smell more like a fall/winter scent which is what I have in mind. I also like amber, so Rue Cambon might be a great idea too. I doubt my local Macys would have that one. I’ll have to trek to Saks or get a sample online. Thank you. October 6, 2012 at 7:47pm Reply

    • Linda: Probably not the most original recommendation, but have you tried the original J’Adore (pre-reformulation)? On me at least, it reads as a really gorgeous white floral with a hint of incense in the drydown, and the sillage fits what you’re looking for. My skin didn’t amp the green notes, so it works year-round for me, but I’m not sure if it’s what you’d want in cold weather. October 6, 2012 at 6:29pm Reply

      • Michele: Linda, I have samples of the new J’Adore and I have a bottle of J’Adore d’Ete (which is heavy on orange blossom). The new J’Adore is eh. Reformulations – sigh. Why do these companies destroy a good thing? So I guess I would have to go to the Perfume Court for a decant if I want the original… October 6, 2012 at 7:53pm Reply

        • Linda: Yeah, I have a sample of the new J’Adore as well~ it’s definitely not the same scent as the original, to my nose it’s a lot sharper and it lacks that warmness in the drydown. 🙁 Reformulations make me so sad! October 6, 2012 at 11:15pm Reply

      • nozknoz: J’Adore L’Absolu is good and I think it can still be found. October 7, 2012 at 12:12pm Reply

        • Linda: nozknoz, thanks so much for that recommendation! I’ve been looking everywhere for a suitable replacement for my pre-reformulation J’Adore, so I’ll definitely have to check that out. October 7, 2012 at 10:55pm Reply

    • RVB: For and unusual take on Tuberose try Nuit de Tubereuse by L’Artisan Parfumeur -it has an unusual tope note of green Mango with pink pepper and the Duchafour signature base of incense.Another unusual Tuberose is Flor Azteca by Juan(The Exotic Island Perfumer)-it has a mexican Tuberose with massoia ,bitter chocolate ,datura, copal negro, smoky woods and mineral notes-unique indeed October 6, 2012 at 10:45pm Reply

      • Michele: Wow, Flor Azteca sounds very unique. I’ll have to look it up online. October 7, 2012 at 10:31am Reply

    • Carla: Chinatown would warm you in winter, and it has apricots and tuberose. October 7, 2012 at 3:09pm Reply

      • Michele: Carla, if only they could pull the patchouli out of Chinatown, I would douse myself in it. I feel the same about Flowerbomb. I really want to have a scent that is a warm white flower that would be appropriate for evening wear, but that frequently means patchouli in it. Sometimes it feels like a fruitless pursuit.

    • ary: Michele– my all-time favorite white fower is Nocturnes, from Caron. Tuberose, jasmine, orange blossom, stephanotis and that poignant undertone of mousse de saxe. It’s luscious. Light sillage, so you can spray a lot to amp it up;0) Carry a little sprayer to re-apply. October 7, 2012 at 8:58pm Reply

    • Victoria: What about Frederic Malle Lys Mediterranee? It’s a fresh, effervescent lily. Parfums de Nicolai Eclipse and Weekend a Deauville are more lily of the valley, but they are also fresh and sheer lilies. October 6, 2012 at 12:14pm Reply

  • MB: For years, I have been trying to get my mom to try something other than Anais Anais – she’s been wearing it for decades obviously. Not because she’s obdurately refusing to branch out – I think she’s overwhelmed by perfume counters – not just the acres of options but the prices have skyrocketed since she was a younger woman. in her 70s now and I’d love to buy her perfume as a Christmas gift this year. Something along the lines of what she already has – but a little more interesting and sophisticated? Thanks everyone! October 6, 2012 at 12:27pm Reply

    • cryptic: Well, this may seem like a weird suggestion, but SL’s De Profundis reminds me a bit of Anais Anais, so it might appeal to her. October 6, 2012 at 12:34pm Reply

      • Victoria: My mom who loved Anais Anais at one point fell for De Profundis. It has a different character, but its green floral accord has a similar wistful, graceful character.

Then I recommend Parfums de Nicolai Temps d’une Fete, another beautiful green floral that she might enjoy. October 6, 2012 at 1:42pm Reply

    • Elisa: Maybe YSL Y or VC&A First? October 6, 2012 at 12:39pm Reply

    • annemariec: Le Temps d’une Fete would also be my first suggestion. Also: Pleasures, by Estee Lauder? A lovely peppery green floral, not expensive. More expensive but very elegant would be the iris offerings by Chanel: No 18, No 19, No 19 Poudre, 31 Rue Cambon. And as I was poking around among my samples this morning I came across one of Esprit d’Oscar. It has some of the same understated elegance I associate with AA.

Good luck finding something for you mum. AA is a hard act to follow! October 6, 2012 at 6:00pm Reply

      • MB: Thanks for these suggestions? Do you have a favorite of the Chanels you mentioned? October 6, 2012 at 9:01pm Reply

        • annemariec: Oh Chanel No 19, definitely. I’m also very fond of Pleasures (the original, mind, not the flankers). 31 Rue Cambon is very beautiful, if rather formal. But I was thinking after I made my comment that your mother might find iris notes a bit strange and challenging if she is not used to them. No 19 Poudre is gentler than the original No 19. Something else along those lines is Prada’s Infusion d’Iris. That is a great favourite with Robin at NST as a wear-any-time perfume. Its recent flanker is Infusion d’Iris Absolue, which is richer and deeper. I have not smelled that one. October 6, 2012 at 10:47pm Reply

    • Carla: Perhaps Private Collection, though it can be strong. I seem to remember a soapy character to Anais Anais, and Private Collection has that. October 7, 2012 at 3:11pm Reply

  • Divya: I’d love a recommendation! Well, fall is here and it’s getting a little chilly in most parts of the world. And while my friends and family and I rejoice the smell of winter… it’s still not chilly enough for my all time favorite warm, enveloping myrrh, amber, rose. Over here I smell a particular flower on tall trees that only blooms in the transition seasons as if announcing the onset of winters. The best way to describe the smell would be honey soaked pistachios with a spritz of vetiver and custard apple! I love this smell and I always relate it with winters. The best thing about this haunting coolness is that it doesn’t envelope me when I get hit by the seasonal melancholy but lifts me up. It is like magic. 🙂
I hope someone out there is reading this and knows just the smell (of this winter) in a bottle.

I’m not sure what custard apple smells like, but I especially like AG Vetiver, which seems a bit floral to me, so you might want to try that one if you have a chance. October 7, 2012 at 1:00pm Reply

      • Divya: nozknoz, I will surely give it a try. I live in India and I don’t know what the tree is called but it only blooms of anise like flowers twice in a year. Early autumn and early spring! If you have ever watered an anise plant you’ll notice a similar smell rising from the bushes. October 8, 2012 at 1:04am Reply

    • maggiecat: Your description makes me think a little of tea olive trees in New Orleans (osmanthus, I think). Hove’ Parfumeurs in New Orleans carries it, and it’s not expensive. October 7, 2012 at 8:53pm Reply

      • Divya: The leaves do have a resemblance but the one I’m talking about is sappy and poisonous. if it wasn’t you would probably find all my vases lined with these flowers. Best part is that you can smell it from 100ft away aswell, and as you’d drive past it. I’ll be sure to check Hove’ Parfumeurs out. Thanks for the suggestion! 🙂 October 8, 2012 at 1:22am Reply

    • Mary: Divya–could you be thinking of linden blossoms? Andy Tauer’s Zeta comes to mind when you talk about honey and pistachios! Zeta has the delicious honey inden blossom, and a lovely touch of something mellow and earthy. Maybe you can find a sample! October 7, 2012 at 9:19pm Reply

  • Andrea: Hello Fellow Frag Lovers! I am curious to know about 2 fragrances: one for day and one for night. The day fragrance would be clean, not overly heavy in sillage, and feature Linden. I love Linden soap, but can’t find a fragrance that doesn’t smell like roomspray ( Tilleul D’Orsay, i think that’s the name, is what I refer to here). I like feminine frags that are floral and seem to fit best in spring/summer. I’m allergic to lily and dislike anise, but otherwise any suggestions are welcomed!

As for night, I adore vintage Opium but cannot find any that haven’t gone “off”. The newer Opium is not my taste. OJ Woman or EL Knowing, Cinnabar is not the style I’m looking for; clean spicy sexy would describe it but not earthy, dirty animalic. Let the comments begin! October 6, 2012 at 2:42pm Reply

    • Lucas: Andrea, for a clean, linden fragrance you MUST try Andy Tauer Zeta. It’s magnificent scent and it’s centered around linden blossom. Smells very good and little goes a long way. October 6, 2012 at 2:54pm Reply

      • Victoria: Agree with Lucas on Zeta. Also I recommend the new Ann Gerard Ciel d’Opale, which is a honey soaked linden. And also Aftelier Honey Blossom.

Have you tried the new Opium version? It doesn’t smell like the original, but it is beautiful–lots of myrrh, resins, soft woods and spices.

Frapin Caravelle Epicee is another sexy, beautiful spice. October 6, 2012 at 2:58pm Reply

        • Andrea: Ohhh, I have never heard of Frapin; I love new discoveries! I did smell the new Opium, but remember not liking it. I’ll try it again; I was smelling it for nostalgic reasons and could tell it had been changed, I need to see if I like it on its own merits!

I think the spicy cinnamon appeals to me; it is hard to find a spicy evening/winter fragrance without it being overly “complicated” or animalic. I am so sensitive to nuances in fragrance; this AM my husband had put a roast in the oven and I awoke nauseous from the smell of meat! (A hospital mask sprayed with Eau de Hadrian didn’t help…) October 6, 2012 at 4:11pm Reply

          • Lucas: Nice cinnamon scent is also a Potion by Dsquared2. It’s warm, with amber and vanilla. October 6, 2012 at 4:23pm Reply

      • Andrea: Lucas, thanks for your input! I had forgotten about Zeta, that was a great thought. Sadly, I just swapped it for Ta’if in NST swap (as Amarie). I didn’t care for it but cannot recall why! Ugh, now I need to order a sample just to remember why I disliked it! I think it may have been harsh/bitter on me… October 6, 2012 at 4:16pm Reply

        • Lucas: Oh no! That’s too bad you swapped it. Hope you’ll eventually come by a sample so recall why you didn’t like it.
It might’ve been it’s harsh and boozy opening. October 6, 2012 at 4:24pm Reply

    • cryptic: I haven’t tried, Tauer’s Zeta, but people seem to love it. My only hesitation there would be that the whole Tauer line tends to have a lot of sillage. Annick Goutal’s Eau du Ciel is a linden perfume that you might consider if you’re looking for something light and office-friendly. October 6, 2012 at 3:34pm Reply

      • Andrea: Thank you for your suggestion! I tend to get headaches with “Uber-Sillage” so I will have to try the Goutal. October 6, 2012 at 4:01pm Reply

    • Bettye: So agree with the others on Tauer’s Zeta. It is delightful and different. I recently sampled and keep going back for yet another sniff! Highly recommended. October 6, 2012 at 5:26pm Reply

    • Nina Z: I love spicy scents! Check out Noir Epices by Frederic Malle. I was disappointed a first because it’s more subtle than something like Opium but it grew and grew and grew up me, and now I have a bottle I wear all the time. I also love Diptyque Eau Lente. Very spicy, with oppoponax (so I find it both cheering and comforting). And lately I was given a bottle of Karl Lagerfeld KL, which is no longer made. But wow! It’s like a softer, less in your face Opium. So gorgeous. I haven’t tried it in a while but the first Diptyque fragrance that you can only get from the boutiques L’Eau is a spicy scent, with Cinnamon, Geranium, Sandalwood, Rose, Cloves, reminscent of potpourri. • Ferris: What is the note breakdown of Noir Epices? October 6, 2012 at 10:34pm Reply

      • Andrea: You hit the nail on the head with KL, I wore it in high school and adored it! What I would give to find some; I have searched a bit with no success. That “fan” bottle brings back memories! (I did, however, manage to find Bill Blass and Valentino.). I’ll try the Malle scent, and I need to swing by Nordstrom to sample Eau Lente; thank you! • Poodle: I’m hoping someone can help. I love 10 Corso Como but find it to be a little too weak. I would love to find something that smells like it but with more oomph. Im looking for the WMD version of 10 Corso Como I guess. October 6, 2012 at 2:45pm Reply

    • Victoria: Do you mind if it’s more sandalwood than cedar? Because if not, Serge Lutens Santal de Mysore might be a great choice.

Otherwise, there is Olfactive Studio Chambre Noire, which is a beautiful dark woody blend, but with lots of nuance.

If Diptyque ever releases Tam Dao as EdP, then you might find your perfect perfume! The edt feels thinner than 10 Corso Como, but they are very similar. October 6, 2012 at 3:05pm Reply

      • Poodle: I’m going to have to check out the Lutens. I did try Tam Dao and it’s nice but not quite strong enough. An EDP might work. Chambre Noire sounds nice too. Thanks! October 7, 2012 at 2:00pm Reply

    • Katya: I too found it a bit too timid, have you tried CdG Wonderwood? October 6, 2012 at 4:15pm Reply

    • RVB: If you want a for sure WMD try 1740 by Histories de Parfums-it’s a woody leather immortelle scent-darker than 10 Corso Como but the davana and the dark stewed fruit note combine with the immortelle to create a dark wood scent with serious power and sillage October 6, 2012 at 10:58pm Reply

      • Poodle: Ooooo. That sounds like it has possibilities. Thanks! October 7, 2012 at 2:03pm Reply

    • Nina Z: Chanel No 19 is galbanum, not vetiver. If you want a beautiful green floral try Annick Goutal Heure Exquise, kind of like 19 but warmer and richer. This one makes me swoon, and is one of the few bottles I own. October 6, 2012 at 6:24pm Reply

I love (love!) OJ Champaca. The composition is perfect— if only I could turn up the volume. The rice note is especially pretty. Any recs for a stronger perfume with that same plush feel? October 6, 2012 at 3:57pm Reply

    • Andrea: I love it, too! Perhaps layering with the lotion would help. I also like Kenzo Amour, which has a rice note as well. You might try that, although there is nothing quite like Champaca, is there? Going on Fragrantica and looking up scents with “rice note” may also yield a harvest of fragrance for you! October 6, 2012 at 4:22pm Reply

    • Tara: Hi AubreyZ
No rice but maybe Vero Profumo’s Mito for a plush green. Or for thai green curry and steamed rice, Fils de Dieu by Etat Libre d’Oranger. October 6, 2012 at 5:33pm Reply

      • Austenfan: Fils de Dieu was my first thought. I don’t particularly care for Champaca but adore Fils de Dieu. It would definitely be worth sampling even though it may not be exactly what you are looking for. It has very nice sillage and longevity without ever being overwhelming. October 7, 2012 at 9:57am Reply

    • Sibylle: How about Fiore de Riso by Farmacia SS. Annunziata? The rice note isn’t very pronounced, but the overall feeling is warm and plush. Sillage is moderate, but staying power is very good. October 6, 2012 at 7:14pm Reply

  • Domestic Goblin: Please recommend me a perfume that captures the essence of the plum girl in the book: “Perfume The Story of a Murderer”. Words that the author, Patrick Süskind used included:

    – sea breeze
    – nut oil
    – water lillies
    – apricot blossoms
    – yellow plums

    • RVB: Try Baque by Slumberhouse-a warm amber tobacco flower perfume. It has a pronounced apricot note. There’s also a nuttiness from the straw note a floral note from davana and the ambergris tincture gives it a sea air feeling October 6, 2012 at 11:04pm Reply

  • Ann C.: This is fun!

I’m on the lookout for a fragrance that is warm, smooth & elegant, medium sillage, appropriate for daytime, suitable for fall and winter, with a lovely and long-lasting dry down.

I don’t like heady tuberose or heavy sandalwood, but I’m open to experimentation and will try anything once. October 6, 2012 at 5:53pm Reply

    • Caro: Amouage Dia October 6, 2012 at 6:26pm Reply

    • Victoria: Olfactive Studio Lumiere Blanche has an interesting interplay of fresh and warm, which makes it ideal as a daytime perfume.

Hermes 24 Faubourg has a great character,
      definitely an elegant choice.

Are you looking for something more floral or woody/oriental? October 6, 2012 at 6:43pm Reply

      • Ann C.: I’ll definitely sample Amouage Dia. I’ve been curious about it for awhile.

Victoria, I usually like woody/oriental as long as it isn’t too heavy on sandalwood. For example, I didn’t like SL’s latest, Santal Majuscule. I plan to retest my sample before I write it off, though. October 6, 2012 at 6:47pm Reply

        • Victoria: Then here are a few more that I think are beautiful and that fit your description: Serge Lutens Boxeuses, Diptyque Volutes, Chanel 31 rue Cambon, Francis Kurkdjian Amyris. October 6, 2012 at 6:55pm Reply

          • Ann C.: Thank you! I already own and love 31 Rue Cambon. I’ll add these to my sample order. October 6, 2012 at 6:58pm Reply

    • Patt: Hi Ann, I think that you would like Prada’s Infusion d’Iris Absolue. It’s a richer, more intense version of the original Infusion d’Iris, has moderate longevity and sillage and goes easily from day into evening. October 6, 2012 at 7:26pm Reply

      • Ann C.: Thank you, Patt! October 6, 2012 at 8:11pm Reply

  • Linda: Ooh, I’ll play! 🙂 I’m looking for a warm floral/floriental with a bit of a gourmand edge. By gourmand, I don’t mean a fruity floral~ I mean more along the lines of a floral with a touch of, honey, chocolate, etc. And if I could find something like that with a bit of sexy spice/incense in the drydown, I would buy it by the gallons. 😀 Mainstream or niche, cheap or expensive~ as long as it smells good, I’ll try it! I’d love to be able to suggest something in a similar vein to her. Something that will be new and exciting to her but will remind her of Rush. October 6, 2012 at 6:25pm Reply

    • Michele: Hi Char, there is a website called escentsational.com that sells their own fragrance oils and related products. They are inexpensive, but most smell pretty darn good! They make a copy of Rush called Wave. I have purchased it for friends who love Rush and they were very happy with it. A small roll on is about 15 dollars (US). It might be worth a try- check out the website. You may be able to buy samples of their fragrances too. I frequent their store in Long Island,NY when I can. I want something very special to make it my signature scent. I love roses, buy not to girly girl, more Sharon Stone and less Britney Spears. I appreciatie vanilla, musk and amber. • Victoria: How about Stella MacCartney Stella? A beautiful ambery rose that definitely smells sexy and elegant.

My other suggestion, more niche, is Frederic Malle Lipstick Rose. It is a mix of violet, rose and woods. It has a warm, soft character and smells sultry and chic at once. October 7, 2012 at 3:30am Reply

      • Almi: Thank you Victoria for the wonderful suggestions. I will be getting samples of both of these for sure. I also love Agent Provocateur, original fragrance, but I believe that either one of this two suggestions will hopefully become part of my repertoire. But for sure a fragrance that is feminine and daring will capture my attention. Thanks a lot! October 7, 2012 at 8:51am Reply

I live in The Netherlands, and I will try to get at least a sample for this one, but not sure if this will be possible. If you can recommend another sexy and soultry fragrance I will be glad. • Victoria: Almi, some more came to mind–Annick Goutal Grand Amour (and also check out their straightforward roses, which are lovely–Rose Splendide and Rose Absolue), Parfums de Rosine Rose d’Amour (and Rose de Rosine). Yves Rocher Rose Absolu may not have the designer brand cachet, but it’s a fantastic rose (Yves Rocher spends more money on their perfume formulas than some so-called luxury brands)! Also, Lancome Mille et Une Rose, if you can find it at your Lancome counter. October 7, 2012 at 10:05am Reply

    • Anne: How about Love by Chloe? I am not sure it has rose in it, but it definitely is sexy and chic. Definitely worth a signature sent! October 7, 2012 at 7:31am Reply

      • Victoria: I 2nd this one. It has some rose, and it wears like a soft silk slip. October 7, 2012 at 8:42am Reply

    • Char: Maybe Guerlain’s Shalimar would work for you?
It’s a classic, and for good reason. It’s super interesting with bergamot, lemon and something spicy right off the bat. It has some of those rose and jasmine floral notes in it, and is almost on the verge of being powdery. And once it calms down it is heavy on vanilla and amber. To me, it smells sweet but not in a fluffy pink candy kind of way, more along the lines of aged tawny port, if that makes sense. October 7, 2012 at 11:36am Reply

    • maja: I second Yves Rocher Rose Absolue, it’s wonderful and not expensive. October 7, 2012 at 1:08pm Reply

    • nozknoz: Rochas Tocade is a wonderful rose vanilla. BK Liaisons Dangereuses is a fantastic plum rose, with vetiver than lends a hint of smoke. October 7, 2012 at 1:19pm Reply

      • Victoria: 2nd all of these! Wearing By Kilian Liaisons Dangereuses right now. Mmmmm….. October 7, 2012 at 2:18pm Reply

        • Almi: Thank you all for these wonderful suggestions!

After many hours of research I narrow it down to these three signature roses:

-Stella by Stella McCartney, for my signature rose scent. A sexy and classic rose.

-Alamut by Lorenzo Villareti, for my oriental rose trip that will take me back to one of my favorite cities, Istanbul.

And -Agent Provocateur, for a very sexy almost S&M rose that reminds me of one of my favorite songs, ‘Criminal’ by Fiona Apple.

Thank you Victoria for such a wonderful initiative. October 8, 2012 at 8:00am Reply

    • ojaddicte: My 14 year old niece loves Marc Jacobs Daisy… the packaging does appeal to that age group, but the juice is appropriate. If your niece likes the scent of lily of the valley, Diorissimo is a beautiful intro to scent. I hope this helps! October 7, 2012 at 12:47am Reply

      • Ariel: I have to second L’Artisan La Chasse Aux Papillons. This is a beautiful perfume that I bought my cousin for her 13th birthday. I tend to wear it in the spring, but for a young teen, it would be wonderful year round. October 7, 2012 at 2:34pm Reply

    • D: Stella by Tosca. A nice lemony scent, in a pretty bottle.

The packaging is very beautiful and the perfume inside even more beautiful. The bottles exist in 50 and 100 ml size.

It has been my signature for a long time, and it has been harder to find and more expensive as time go by and I think I will have to abandon the idea of wearing it for life.. I love the spice and insense in it, its just slightly flowery and sweet, as I dont want anything overly girly.
o make it a bit harder, I cant really buy anything in the super expensive category 🙂

a recommendation for ojaddict, and her 14 your niece, is Balenciaga Paris , which is still a young pretty commercial perfume but feels so much more interesting than daisy, even that it has that same clean, fresh feel only tad bit more complex. Worth sampling anyway!

    • Victoria: Charlotte, there are a few fragrances that come to mind with a similar floral-oriental, iris and incense vibe: Yves Saint Laurent Belle d’Opium, Vivienne Westwood Boudoir, Hermes Rouge Hermes, Caron Or et Noir (for a more retro rose-incense twist on this idea), Parfums de Nicolai Sacrebleu. The last one is especially recommended!

    • Victoria: Jan, for some great recommendations on fragrances with the anise notes, scroll up this thread–at the very top of it, I posted a question asking everyone for their recommendations of great licorice/anise perfumes, and I got many wonderful suggestions.

For clove and woods, I recommend Caron Parfum Sacre, it is warm, elegant, with many interesting twists.

If you like tarragon notes, you should try fragrances from Hermes Cologne collection–Eau de Pamplemousse Rose has a herbal, green top which contains basil, but on my skin it smells distinctly of tarragon. October 7, 2012 at 10:15am Reply

        • Poodle: Michele, I am probably not the best gauge of lasting power. My skin eats most perfumes. I will say that it lasts a few hours on me so on the average person it probably lingers far longer. Try and sample if you can. Although its getting a lot of love on the blogs so if you didn’t like it I’m sure you could unload it. October 8, 2012 at 7:23pm Reply

    • Victoria: I’m an orange blossom fan, and some of my favorites for daytime are L’Artisan Seville a l’Aube, which Poodle mentioned, by Kilian Sweet Redemption (but it’s just so darn expensive), Serge Lutens Fleur d’Oranger, Hermes 24 Faubourg.

I also love Annick Goutal Neroli and Jo Malone Orange Blossom, but those are fairly straightforward. October 7, 2012 at 2:57pm Reply

The notes are listed as kaffir lime, acacia farnesia (black locust), jasmine, barley (wheat?), almond, palisander wood (rosewood) and sweet benzoin. I love the dry down of this. For a long time I thought it was the palisander wood, but now I’m wondering if it’s the almond or benzoin. Or perhaps it’s some combination of the above. Any recommendations for something similar. I love my woody orientals. Thanks! October 7, 2012 at 7:24pm Reply

    • RVB: Try Commes des Garcons Palisander a woody oriental based on cedar myrrh and palisander. For a benzoin heavy scent try Cologne pour le Soir by Frances Kurkdjian a warm oriental blend or
if you dare… try Absolue pour le Soir an animalic version of the cologne with pronounced cumin and honey notes 😉 October 8, 2012 at 2:13am Reply

    • Victoria: Another woody-oriental I’m enjoying right from Francis Kurkdjian house is Amyris. It has a great combination of warm and sparkling, and it’s a really well-made perfume. I don’t remember Sensi that well, unfortunately, but I know that it has many fans. Armani has discontinued some of its best, which is a shame. October 8, 2012 at 10:29am Reply

    • Elisa: I have two fragrances that remind me quite a bit of Sensi. One is YSL Cinema. The other is Moschino Couture. • Harlan: I am looking for the perfect perfume… For me it would be intensely animalic and darkly broody- bot not cold. It should exclaim a certain raw dirtiness, yet have refined complexity. It should not smell overly synthetic, feminine-flowery, and especially not fruity. No aldehydes, “white musk,” ozone, or laundry detergent either. I am endlessly enamored with the smells of: tobacco, labdanum, oakmoss, oudh, civet, castor, vetiver, patchouli, costus, spikenard, tuberose, ambergris, saffron… and this recommendation is for a (open-minded) man. I tend to prefer niche, indie and middle-eastern houses. Anyone recommendations would be most appreciated! October 8, 2012 at 2:33am Reply

  • mysterious_scent: Am I too late to this game? I am looking for something that can represent the feeling of Tibet. Does it exist? October 8, 2012 at 4:43am Reply

    • Amer: Would you settle for Bhutan? Artisan’s Dzongkha might be what you need. October 8, 2012 at 4:59am Reply

      • mysterious_scent: Thank you! I have heard Dzongkha but never tried. I’d like my tibet fragrance feels as cold as snowy mountain wind yet as warm as burning incence in an Tibetan buddhism temple. October 8, 2012 at 9:56am Reply

        • Victoria: Then you definitely should try Dzongkha. It has that intriguing interplay between cool and warm. October 8, 2012 at 10:08am Reply

    • Rachel: It’s supposed to be Italy in the winter but Eau d’Italie’s Sienne L’Hiver smells cold and warm to me. October 8, 2012 at 10:40am Reply

      • mysterious_scent: Thank you Rachel. I have been always wanting to try Eau d’Talie line October 8, 2012 at 4:56pm Reply

    • RVB: For a cheap thrill try Tibetan Mountain Temple by Pacifica-vetiver,patchouli,incense ,ginger and orange. It’s quite good and does smell like the inside of a buddhist temple…and it’s dirt cheap! October 8, 2012 at 1:38pm Reply

      • mysterious_scent: Thank you! Another one added to my must-try October 8, 2012 at 4:55pm Reply

      • Nina Z: I love Tibetan Mountain Temple. I know everyone says it is dirt cheap, but that’s just because it comes in a small bottle (which is nice for us who have multiple bottles). So it’s not really a cheap fragrance (and certainly doesn’t smell that way). October 8, 2012 at 11:46pm Reply

  • Amer: Can anyone suggest a truly earthy perfume? I would like something that smells like earth, stones, mineral and overall anti-perfumey. I have Gentian Blanche that fits in this description but I started getting bored of it. Anything in these lines? It might not exist – I know… October 8, 2012 at 4:57am Reply

    • Victoria: Maitre et Gantier Parfumeur Route du Vetiver immediately comes to mind! It’s very earthy, dark and rich. But I haven’t tried the newer batch, so I won’t vouchsafe that it wasn’t reformulated. October 8, 2012 at 5:51am Reply

    • Caro: Amer, try the Olivier Durbano line. His fragrances have been inspired by stones and, to me, they have a mineral feel. Quartz Rosé and Heliotrope are my favorite ones so far. October 8, 2012 at 11:56am Reply

    • RVB: Try Sienne L’Hiver by Eau d’Italie-it smells like Sienne in winter(thus the name)-wood smoke, black olive, truffle, loamy earth and cold stone.I highly recommend it.Also Terre d’Hermes has a very earthy mineral like quality. The EDT is more mineral and the pure parfum is more mossy and earthy October 8, 2012 at 1:42pm Reply

    • D: I swear Carnal Flower smells like tuberose, and the garden soil in which the tuberose was planted. October 8, 2012 at 6:50pm Reply

  • Deborah: I am a newbie to the perfumista world, and would love a recommendation that would smell like a sweet pea. Sweet like a rose, but with a sharp citrus cut going across it so it wasn’t sickly. Sorry if I don’t know the lingo well yet. October 8, 2012 at 5:04am Reply

    • Victoria: I would recommend the perfumes in the Parfums de Rosine collection, because while they are roses, some of them smell like sweet peas. For instance, I get a sweet pea note in Rosa Flamenca and Lotus Rose.

Also, Miller Harris Coeur de Fleur has a lovely sweet pea note.

Antonia’s Flowers Floret is based on the idea of a sweet pea, and it’s delicate and pretty.

Also, Paul & Joe Blanc wraps sweet pea in a sheer musk, vanilla and almond. October 8, 2012 at 5:55am Reply

    • Isabelle: Hi Deborah,

Sage by Sage Machado contains a wonderful note of wild sweet pea.

This scent exists in roll-on-oil, eau de toilette and eau de parfum.

I own a beautiful little roll-on-oil bottle since lots of years and the scent is still very nice, sweet and green at the same time. I think you should give it a try! October 8, 2012 at 9:10am Reply

    • Austenfan: Unfortunately I am not very familiar with the smell of peas but a nice rosy yet still crisp fragrance is Rose Pivoine by Parfums de Nicolaï. She has these wonderful 30 ml. bottles which makes it that much easier to try her line. October 8, 2012 at 1:46pm Reply

      • Deborah: Thank you all for these suggestions – can’t wait to find them and try them out! October 8, 2012 at 11:05pm Reply

  • Vishishta: I would recommend Cardamon and Khypre from DSH Fragrances. It is my mainstay for any occasion. I also use the scented massage oil and body cream. They are of a high quality and people are always amazed at the fragrence. Khypre is an ancient Egyptian formula that was taken from the walls of the temples. Every temple made a version of Khypre. It has many ingredients: wine, honey, spices. On it’s own, it is subtle yet pervasive–spicy with aromatic spikes. Combined with the extra Cardamon, it is opulent and lush (also very strong) and unlike any perfume I’ve experienced. It is quite strong and should be worn in moderation–two dabs on the back of the hands suffice. October 8, 2012 at 12:30pm Reply

  • Alejandra: Hi
Please, can anybody suggest an affordable perfume which contains anise? Thanks a lot! October 8, 2012 at 9:44pm Reply

    • Austenfan: If you scroll up to the beginning of this thread you will find a lot of suggestions.
The original Lolita Lempicka ( now often calles premier parfum)
Etro Anice (look on ebay for some good deals)
Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Anisia Bella; it is discontinued but I think a lot is still floating around online ( and on ebay)
Have fun exploring! I love anise in perfume ( and in hot milk) October 9, 2012 at 4:35pm Reply

    • ojaddicte: 1000 Flowers, creator of one of the recommended anise fragrances, Reglisse Noire is having an online sale. Savings are from 20-25% off. I just snagged a 50ml bottle of Reglisse Noire for $88 Cdn. Happy shopping! October 9, 2012 at 8:09pm Reply

  • Alejandra: Thanks a lot fo your suggestions. I had scrolled up the beginning of the thread but most of the the fragrances suggested are not available in my country. I wore Gaultier Classique for years and I’ll try Lolita Lempicka soon! Love anise in perfume too. Thanks again. October 10, 2012 at 5:09am Reply

  • rose: I’d love to hear any recommendations from folks here, you all seem pretty expert to me – I’d like to wear something more sexy and sensual and I love the idea of Fracas or Carnal Flower but they’d be too much for me.

I normally wear quite natural greenish perfumes (these have included Channel 19, Bulgari Thè Vert and recently Annik Goutal’s Ninfeo Mio. I’ve also enjoyed Bulgari Black and Donna Karan’s Cashmere Mist (for their close to the skin comfort smell). My recent favourite is Dyptych’s Philosykos but it has a slight chemically smell that makes it not perfect. Love the fig note though.

What I want is something more sexy and sensual, but I definitely wouldn’t suit something too heavy or old fashioned.

I also loathe ‘clean’ smelling scents. I already smell very clean as I have dry, cool, close pored skin and perfumes with linen freshness or Lily of the Valley fragrance will just make me smell sanitised! On the other hand, heavy orientals on me are like oil on water – it just doesn’t mix.

I have dark hair, pale skin and green eyes, I like simple elegant clothes in natural fabrics. Any recommendations based on all this info would be great! November 7, 2012 at 8:39am Reply

    • Victoria: Rose, this thread may not be that active now, but I will move your comment to our next round of Recommend Me A Perfume this week. Meanwhile, I was wondering if you’ve tried L’Artisan Premier Figuier? It has a beautiful fig note, but the drydown is warm and woody. November 7, 2012 at 9:59am Reply

      • rose: Thanks Victoria. I’ll give that a try, I’m in Edinburgh which is a bit rubbish for more niche perfumes, but I’ll find it when I’m next in London or somewhere similar. Sounds like that would be a more complex version of Phylosikos, maybe more earthy. I do like fig!

I also like a little bit of musk – both Bulgari Black and Donna Karan’s Cashmere Mist have a little in them – maybe synthetic I’m not sure. November 7, 2012 at 11:38am Reply

  • Debbie: I have worn Vera Wang’s bouquet and liked it.
When I was younger I worn Nina Ricci L’Air du Temps and Chanel CoCo. I like floral with a citrus undertones. Any recommendations. December 10, 2012 at 4:24pm Reply

      • Georgia Bonham: Hi again Victoria! 🙂 Well… I used to be a slave to Cabotine (Gres) but I am a bit too old for that now. What got me thinking about a new scent was a free sample of Mahon Leather from Floris when I bought some Stephanotis bath oil for my wedding day. I used to love Stephanotis aswell but again it’s a bit young! Mahon Leather is lovely but I think it is a bit too sandalwood when it dries down and perhaps a little old for me! So: musky, powdery. soapy, sweet with a hint of pretty white flowers. From the ones I have tried so far I give Eau Lente 9/10, 34 Boulevard St.Germain 7/10, Volutes 9/10, Mahon Leather 8/10. Ones that I am not fond of are Floris: Amaryllis, Seringa and MAdonna of the Almonds, which is a pity because it sounded lovely but too fruity! God that is a load waffle……looking forward to suggestions 🙂 March 5, 2013 at 8:18am Reply

        • Georgia Bonham: Oh yes and anything with ginger! I really love the one from Lush. Unexpectedly pretty when it dries off a bit. March 5, 2013 at 8:22am Reply

          • Jan Last: I second the ginger note! I just picked up something I’ve never seen before. It is Rituals No 1 Ginger Essence + White tea. It will now be a go-to scent for summer. Don’t forget those deep grapefruit things, such as Diptyque’s Oyage, drool. March 5, 2013 at 9:27am Reply

            • Georgia Bonham: Did you mean Oyedo? March 5, 2013 at 11:23am Reply

                • Georgia Bonham: Just waiting for a sample of Malabah! It may be THE ONE!! At the moment it is neck and neck with Volutes and Mahon Leather. March 7, 2013 at 1:38pm Reply
