Acqua di Parma Ginepro di Sardegna : New Perfume

Italian fragrance brand Acqua di Parma is introducing a new fragrance this month. Ginepro di Sardegna is inspired by the aroma of Sardinia, an island in the Mediterranean sea, it blends pepper, nutmeg, juniper, cypress and sage with Virginia cedarwood (itself a type of juniper) and true cedarwood.

“Then he thought he saw the flame that released the scent of juniper from the wood logs in the fireplace; and this scent,
in turn, opened up, beyond a musky tunnel, a landscape of woods, rocks, green slopes that reached down to the blue line
of the sea.”
from “Il Cedro del Libano” Grazia Deledda

Acqua di Parma

According to the press release, Ginepro di Sardegna “opens with the aromatic and balsamic notes of juniper blended with the sunny brightness of bergamot and the vivid spicy notes of pepper, pimento, and nutmeg that recall the green landscapes, deep blue skies, and bright colours typical of the lands of Sardinia. The energy of juniper, at the heart, is enhanced again by the aromatic resinous notes of common sage, with cypress bringing warm balsamic accents to the fragrance, in perfect balance with a base of warm and woody accents of Virginia Cedarwood. A feeling of deep satisfaction that is only offered by the Sardinian landscape, where the Mediterranean reaches the pinnacle perfection.”

Available at Acqua di Parma boutiques and department store counters. Via press release.

  • Jamie K.: We’ve had this in rainy old England for a while, which is somewhat ironic. In fact, the whole Blu Meditteraneo line has been pushed heavily in the last year or so, with samples aplenty where I work.

The line itself (Ginepro included) features some very functional summer scents, but nothing has really blown me away. I’d much rather take something from the Colonia line or one of the Nobile line than the slightly over-simplified BM line. June 4, 2014 at 7:18am Reply

    • Danaki: True…Sniffed most of the BM line last time I was in John Lewis, and wasn’t particularly blown away. I liked Myrto a bit more but couldn’t justify the price for the experience I got from it June 4, 2014 at 7:45am Reply

      • Victoria: Myrto was another one I liked, but yes, too overpriced for a simple cologne. June 4, 2014 at 10:29am Reply

      • Peter: If I didn’t get a bottle as a gift, I wouldn’t but it. Mirto is fresh, clean and green, but it goes poof on my skin, and nothing is left after 1 hour. June 4, 2014 at 11:10am Reply

        • Victoria: If it vanishes that quickly, then layering may not help much, but do try it with some lotion.

Alternatively, you can save it to add to your bath. June 4, 2014 at 3:37pm Reply

    • Victoria: I liked Arancia the most, but the rest were unexciting. Now, I really hope that Ginepro breaks with that trend. After all, if it’s in any way attempts to be inspired by Sardinia, it should have some drama. June 4, 2014 at 10:25am Reply

  • Jillie: This sounds like it would be perfect for a friend of mine who comes from Sardinia and is very stylish – like most Italian men. You have solved a present-buying problem for me! June 4, 2014 at 7:19am Reply

    • Victoria: There might be body products too, which are a less risky present. AdP usually does nice ancillary collections of lotions and gels. I myself feel like being whisked away to Sardinia. 🙂 June 4, 2014 at 10:27am Reply

      • Jillie: Thanks for the very sensible suggestion. He and his wife go there every year but – this is why I don’t desire visiting (at least not in summer) – it is so hot there! June 4, 2014 at 11:42am Reply

        • Victoria: I’ve been told that summer is too much, so unless you want to enjoy the beach, it’s best to visit in the spring. June 4, 2014 at 3:39pm Reply

  • Ralu: Hi Victoria,
I’ll be traveling to San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was wondering if there are any perfume destinations that you know of and that I should add to my list. For example, if I were traveling to LA I would go to Luckyscent and in NYC I would go to Aedes and Henri Bendel. Thank you! 🙂 June 4, 2014 at 7:32am Reply

    • Victoria: Ralu, here is a perfect post from you:

Natalie lives in San Francisco, so her advice is great. I can’t wait to hear about your explorations, so please let me know what you end up discovering during the trip. June 4, 2014 at 10:29am Reply

      • Ralu: Wow! What a great resource! Thank you Victoria. Jacqueline Perfumery sounds intriguing and is first on my list. I’ll hit a few spots and report back. Guerlain Pamplelune just arrived and it’s amazing! So perfect for the upcoming hot weather. Thank you. June 4, 2014 at 4:52pm Reply

        • Victoria: Yay! Enjoy Pamplelune. It can be unpredictable, but if it works, it’s one of the best and most original citrus perfumes. June 5, 2014 at 5:39am Reply

  • Ann: Does juniper smell like gin? Because I like how gin cocktails smell and I want that kind of perfume. June 4, 2014 at 10:59am Reply

    • Victoria: Gin contains juniper and other herbs and spices. But the juniper note dominates. Have you tried Colette by Tocca? It has a great juniper note. June 4, 2014 at 3:35pm Reply

  • Peter: I received a bottle of Mirto di Panarea as a gift and I like it but it doesn’t last. Any suggestions on what to layer with it? June 4, 2014 at 11:07am Reply

    • Victoria: I think that if you have other woods or even citrus colognes in your collection, they might layer well with Mirto. Another idea is to add a lotion. Even unacented lotion can help anchor the scent to your skin, so to speak. June 4, 2014 at 3:36pm Reply

  • Annette Reynolds: I just tried this last week and it did nothing for me. I was disappointed, as the description sounded so perfect for summer. Live and learn… June 4, 2014 at 12:44pm Reply

    • Victoria: Oh well! I’m keeping my Eau de Cartier for those hot summer days. Or Kilian’s Prelude to Love, a blend of iris and orange blossom. After dismissing it initially as just ok, I’ve fallen in love with it. June 4, 2014 at 3:40pm Reply

  • JLJ: I’m sorry if I’m question is off topic, but do you know where I can find Kenzo Jungle L’Elephante. I read your beautiful review and tried looking in stores, but nobody has heard of it. I live in the US. June 4, 2014 at 3:50pm Reply

    • Bastet: I bought a mini of Jungle L’Elephante recently from fragrancenet, and I believe they also had various larger sizes available. I’ve always had good luck shopping with them, and the prices are right (no affiliation, just a satisfied customer). By the way, I really enjoyed the warmth and spiciness of the scent, although it is now stored away for the summer. June 4, 2014 at 4:01pm Reply

      • Victoria: Mine is too. It would be like wearing a winter coat on a hot day. 🙂 June 4, 2014 at 4:30pm Reply

    • Victoria: It’s not distributed in the US, but it’s still sold in Europe and it’s also available on various discounter sites and Ebay. Like Bastet, I’ve ordered previously from fragrancenet and was happy with their service. The perfume was fresh and well-packaged. June 4, 2014 at 4:29pm Reply

  • maja: I am, obviously, very curious to try this. 🙂 Ginepro is wide-spread in Sardinia but as a local I would probably choose other more impressive scents if I had to make a perfume inspired by the island. Myrtle, lentisque and laurel come to my mind immediately as well as the cork oak. Something bitter, aromatic, shrub-by 🙂 almost wild. June 4, 2014 at 4:23pm Reply

    • Victoria: I was wondering about that too, because my one scent association with Sardinia is myrtle. And pecorino, but that’s probably not something one would want in a perfume. 🙂 I like your perfume idea very much. June 4, 2014 at 4:31pm Reply

  • luminous: Am I only one person who finds this brand overrated and exaggerate? Their sillage and lasting power are medicore on my skin and I wasn’t captivated with perfumes also. January 30, 2018 at 3:14am Reply

    • Victoria: It’s a mixed bag for me. February 1, 2018 at 4:45am Reply
