Scent Diary : Season-less Fragrances

Happy Thanksgiving! Hope that everyone is enjoying a nice holiday break. My reader Eliza asked if I could poll you on your most versatile perfumes, the ones that you can wear anytime, anywhere, summer or winter. I thought that it was a fun question, so I would love to find out.

grand-place-2

Some of my favorite choices would be Guerlain Après L’Ondée, Chanel No 19Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist and Bois de Violette, 4711, Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine, Hermès Osmanthe Yunnan, Olfactive Studio Lumière Blanche. I can wear these perfumes anytime, rain or shine, and they always feel just right.

And of course, you can use this space for our usual Scent Diary, sharing fragrances you encounter, good and bad, perfumes you wear and the scents around you.

  • Alex: Happy thanksgiving to all who celebrate it. Mine would be Bas de Soie, N°19, Jour de Hermes and of course Shalimar! November 27, 2014 at 7:22am Reply

    • Judith: That’s interesting. Bas de Soie is my spring fragrance. C19 is my working frag, so it’s an all year rounder. November 27, 2014 at 10:57am Reply

    • Victoria: Jour d’Hermes is one of mine too. I really like that perfume. November 27, 2014 at 12:00pm Reply

  • Sofie: Like a perfect trench coat.
    N°19, Shalimar, Sycomore. I’m still flirting with the first two, but up till now found these worked whenever, where ever. And they always make me smile :). November 27, 2014 at 7:30am Reply

    • Victoria: That’s my definition of an all-time favorite–it feels perfect every time. 🙂 November 27, 2014 at 12:01pm Reply

  • Sandra: Happy Thanksgiving!
    I am working today (boo) but will meet some friends later for lots of eating! I would rather do my scent diary when I am at my thanksgiving feast!

    When I think if fragrances that is versatile I think of the ones that are soft and wear close to the skin.
    My 2 favorites are a beautiful serene floral: amouage Ciel and the soft musky powder:No 19 poudre
    Hope everyone’s day is filled with love and joy November 27, 2014 at 7:32am Reply

    • Victoria: I can’t wait to read your feast-inspired diary! We have no turkey and not even cranberry sauce today, because both of us are just exhausted. Oh well, there will be rice with grilled mackerel and a new episode of Sue Perkins exploring Mekong (I love that woman!) November 27, 2014 at 12:02pm Reply

  • Connie: Mitzah, l’Air de Rien, and DjHenne are in this category for me. November 27, 2014 at 7:39am Reply

    • Judith: l’Air de Rien is my desert island fragrance. It’s all the year round for me, but not all the day long: I like to sleep in it. November 27, 2014 at 10:59am Reply

    • Victoria: I love these diverse choices! November 27, 2014 at 12:04pm Reply

  • Glannys: Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it!
    The most versatile of my perfumes would be Chergui, Un Jardin Sur Le Nil and Acqua di Parma Colonia. November 27, 2014 at 7:48am Reply

    • Victoria: And another fun, diverse list! November 27, 2014 at 12:04pm Reply

  • Cornelia Blimber: Having many perfumes brings sometimes ”l’embarras du choix”!
    So I have a little box with versatile perfumes:
    Féminité du Bois
    Untitled
    Homme Dior
    Jicky
    Eau Première No. 5
    Arpège

    Guerlain is my favourite brand, but I would not call their perfumes versatile.
    Neither Mille (Patou), which is a kind of ”signature scent”for me.
    The only perfume I can wear when I have migraine is, strangely, Shalimar Edt. November 27, 2014 at 7:55am Reply

    • Cornelia Blimber: p.s Beautiful picture of the Grand Place! Grand Place and Campidoglio are the most beautiful squares in the world. (not to forget De Vrijthof in Maastricht of course). November 27, 2014 at 7:58am Reply

      • Victoria: Thank you! A friend was visiting, so we took a walk in the area. It was rainy but still very scenic. November 27, 2014 at 12:06pm Reply

    • Michaela: The Untitled one is so funny.
      I would wear Chanel no 5 Eau Premiere anytime, too, if I had it. Absolutely 🙂 November 27, 2014 at 9:10am Reply

    • Hamamelis: Hi Cornelia,
      Shortly off topic, I had a lovely time in Amsterdam, tassenmuseum has to wait for the next trip! My husband arranged a perfume profile at the perfumelounge, it was great fun, and he bought a few very nice scents. We stayed one night in the conservatorium hotel, really nice.
      Now as far as the anytime anyplace anywhere scents go, at the moment my choice is similar:
      Chanel 5 Eau premiere
      Feminite du Bois (sorry for the lack of accents)
      Different is
      Cristalle
      and my migraine scent is
      Terre d’Hermes Eau tres Fraiche

      I ordered a sample of Untitled but have not tried it yet, being very occupied with the Travelling Sample Box! November 27, 2014 at 9:13am Reply

      • Cornelia Blimber: Hi Hamamelis, glad you enjoyed your staying in Amsterdam!
        What did your husband buy (if I may ask of course)–for you or for both of you?
        At the Conservatorium hotel you can feel as a queen, i think! November 27, 2014 at 10:24am Reply

        • Hamamelis: Yes, a queen for a day! Lunch there was also very nice, in the evening we had Indonesian in a cheap but very nice restaurant in the van Baerlestraat.
          My husband bought Ineke Derring Do, Lorenzo Villoresi Aura Maris and he took home a sample of New York which he also really liked (we both did the perfume profiling, he likes green and citrus, and waternotes but not calone, and my tastes are very broad by now, I discovered I like iris very much, and leather, I think I smelled the vintage Cabochard, wonderful!) and I bought Pozzo di Borgo 23 janvier, a very lovely fig, cardamon and iris! • Victoria: I know what you mean! Whenever I start making such lists, I’m tempted to add and add. So many favorites. November 27, 2014 at 12:05pm Reply

  • Aurora: My every season perfumes are: Noa l’eau, SL Clair de Musc, Fragonard Fleur d’Oranger and Shalimar eau de cologne. November 27, 2014 at 8:00am Reply

    • Michaela: How does Shalimar EDC compare to EDT or EDP, please? November 27, 2014 at 8:52am Reply

      • Aurora: Hi Michaela: they are all different, that’s what I find so wonderful with Shalimar. The EDC, as you would expect, the top notes are very refreshing and it is drier more unisex than the EDP and EDT. It has good staying power for an eau de cologne, I find the drydown especially beguiling – when I go to bed with it I can still smell it in the morning. November 27, 2014 at 12:33pm Reply

        • Michaela: Thank you very much, Aurora. I know only the EDT and EDP, and now the cologne sounds very interesting, too. November 28, 2014 at 3:36am Reply

    • Victoria: Do you like the original Noa too, or just this version? November 27, 2014 at 12:06pm Reply

      • Aurora: Oh yes! I love the original Noa too which I discovered thanks to you Victoria. Its little sister l’Eau is not a weaker version of Noa it has its own personality, contrary to Noa it’s fruity on top isn’t it, but not sickly fruity like so many frags nowadays, and my experience is that while it doesn’t project much it lasts long; in fact I have used it for traveling last summer and it has become one of my comfort fragrances. November 27, 2014 at 1:25pm Reply

        • Victoria: I think that the brand does good flankers over all. They actually offer something different, an interesting variation on the original theme. November 30, 2014 at 9:30am Reply

  • sanna: Mythique DelRae, Jardin d”Armide Oriza L. Legrand November 27, 2014 at 8:07am Reply

    • Victoria: Mythique is pure elegance! November 27, 2014 at 12:06pm Reply

  • Marsha: Unfortunately, I am a fragrance lightweight. I have to see what mood my nose is in or get a migraine from one of my favorites. But the ones I can wear most anytime are 10 Corso Como, Tam Dao Parfum, CS Perfect Veil and one I finally treated myself to yesterday, Stetson, courtesy of the recommendation of Ms. Tanya Sanchez. I spritzed it yesterday and I’m still catching whiffs of it this morning. November 27, 2014 at 8:18am Reply

    • Victoria: Ms Tania’s recommendations are always fun. November 27, 2014 at 12:08pm Reply

  • Michaela: Happy Thanksgiving to all those who celebrate it!
    I would wear anytime, anywhere, rain or shine, hot or cold: Bulgari Eau Parfumee au The Vert and probably any cologne-like perfumes: Elizabeth Arden Green Tea, Eau de Gaga, Cartier Declaration, and 4711 (I am in a cologne mood after years I thought I strongly dislike them, and I think next year is going to be a cologne one). Cannot forget Hermes Eau des Merveilles, Jacomo Silences, First or Arpege (though I would use only a drop of these during hot summer days), or a dab of an Arabian traditional style attar. November 27, 2014 at 8:49am Reply

    • Michaela: For the fragrance diary…
      I wear Tocade today, and I immensely enjoy it, it’s so feminine, coquette, warm, pretty, happy and sweet. Perfect cold weather perfume.
      I try to recall today’s few memorable scents: yesterday’s night Shalimar, EDT and EDP (I’m still struggling to select one), this morning coffee, ground and boiled, sweet violet and earthy patchouli essential oils, this morning gray icy air, hot bread, my unlit cigarette, my dogs warm musky fur while I brushed them. On the bad side: urine smell in the street, industrial cleanser and air freshener, gas exhaust, too much cigarette smoke. November 27, 2014 at 9:06am Reply

    • Michaela: Oh, Lalique Encre Noire for men, how could I forget it?! I feel it perfectly versatile, beautiful and easy to wear in all seasons. November 27, 2014 at 9:49am Reply

    • Victoria: Me too! I also thought I disliked colognes, for some reason, until one day I discovered the opposite. I’ve been having fun exploring this family. November 27, 2014 at 12:09pm Reply

  • Tijana: For me: Chanel Beige and 28 La Pausa, Guerlain Mon Precieux Nectar. November 27, 2014 at 9:23am Reply

    • Heather H: Scent Twins:) November 27, 2014 at 11:27am Reply

    • Victoria: I was wearing 28 La Pausa yesterday and it just felt so good, so elegant. November 27, 2014 at 12:09pm Reply

      • Figuier: Elegant sums it up nicely for me also. I was going through airport duty free last weekend, totally hot and bothered by the stress of security; then, catching sight of a new Chanel Exclusifs stand, I swooped down & sprayed my scarf with 28, and suddenly felt a lot cooler. November 27, 2014 at 3:23pm Reply

        • Victoria: It does that to me too. Feels uplifting. November 30, 2014 at 9:34am Reply

  • Figuier: I’m not the biggest fan of woody scents in anything but chilly weather – and I’m sensitive to sandalwood in particular – but if the woodiness comes from vetiver then I’m sold: Sycomore is my absolutely favourite every-weather perfume.

    Other multi-season options: Traversee du Bosphore is sheer enough to work most times of year, the old carnation-y Guerlain Terracotta, Bigarade Concentree, 28 La Pausa… November 27, 2014 at 9:31am Reply

    • Heather H: Love Sycomore! November 27, 2014 at 11:27am Reply

    • Victoria: I wish they brought Guerlain Terracotta back in that version. It was such a little gem. November 27, 2014 at 12:10pm Reply

      • Figuier: Yep, it’s such a pity. The new version is nice, but the first one was more versatile. And I’m down to my last backup bottle 🙁 November 27, 2014 at 3:20pm Reply

  • Danaki: Really interesting poll. Let’s see, this year the versatile ones were:

    Narciso Rodriguez for Her edp; in warmer weather it smells more salty!
    Guerlain Apre l’Ondee; only wore it when I wanted something classy and refined.
    SL La fille de Berlin; I find it works in all seasons and smells nice.

    Speaking of perfumes and weather, I went to Beirut end of summer but the temperatures were 32 C (around 90 F), and Sa majeste La Rose by SL was just so so wrong. completely overtaken by the aldehydes and smelled overwhelmingly soapy and chemically. I was really surprised as I thought it would work.

    I also dabbed some good Oud oil from a Bahraini attar, mixing it with saffron oil or Bulgharian rose oil (my mom’s collection) – these worked a treat. I brought some back with me to the UK and they work so well in lower temperatures too. November 27, 2014 at 9:43am Reply

    • Victoria: It’s fascinating how some scents that feel wrong in cold climates can be feel ideal in the heat, and my Indian attars are a perfect example. They are rich but they don’t see out of place in the dry Indian heat at all. And some even feel uplifting. November 27, 2014 at 12:12pm Reply

  • Cath: A perfume that has been in collection for many years now, and that never fails to please me, is AA Ylang & Vanille. It’s my go to scent when I don’t know what to wear, or when I need something to comfort me, or calm me down. It’s cozy in winter and lush in summer. A year round and all round winner for me, and I hope never to be without it. November 27, 2014 at 9:58am Reply

    • Victoria: I love that one too. It feels comforting to me too. November 27, 2014 at 12:12pm Reply

  • Karen: Wonderful question and fun (and inspiring!) to read the responses. Chanel 5 parfum wears so close to me that it is always “right” when I’m not sure what will work. But, Arpege was always my go-to love although I’ve taken a break lately. November 27, 2014 at 10:18am Reply

    • Victoria: I see what you mean. I find Arpege much more approachable than No 5, even though I love both. November 27, 2014 at 12:13pm Reply

  • Therése: My most versatile perfumes is probably Stella, Sel de Vetiver and Premiere Figuier. They never feel wrong. November 27, 2014 at 10:21am Reply

    • Victoria: Stella can be one of mine too. I never get tired of it. November 27, 2014 at 12:13pm Reply

      • Priscilla: Stella – yes! Also L’Artisan Dzing and Hermes Eau Clair des Merveilles… November 27, 2014 at 4:35pm Reply

      • Hamamelis: Can I ask which Stella you mean? Tocca Stella or Mc Cartney Stella? This before I try to get a sample! December 2, 2014 at 8:00am Reply

        • Victoria: McCartney Stella, which is a rose-amber blend. December 2, 2014 at 9:43am Reply

          • Hamamelis: Thank you! I think it is being reissued, I’ll have a sniff when I come across it. December 2, 2014 at 10:17am Reply

  • Patricia: What a fun question!

    I have five fragrances that are year-round favorites, and I think all but two have already been mentioned!

    Top of the list is Chanel No. 19, EDT or EDP; then Hermes Eau des Merveilles; Prada Infusion d’Iris; Acqua di Parma Colonia; and L’Artisan Safran Troublant, which I might wear later today.

    Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it! November 27, 2014 at 10:22am Reply

    • AnnOo: Safran Troublant is what I’ve chosen for today too! 🙂 (The saffron makes me hungry.) November 27, 2014 at 10:53am Reply

      • Patricia: Scent twins! November 27, 2014 at 11:10am Reply

    • Victoria: No 19 is one of those perfumes that work for me in all concentrations! November 27, 2014 at 12:15pm Reply

  • Steve Johnson: Jo Malone (anything), Aziyade and Osmanthus Interdite by Parfums D’Empire, Boston Ivy by DS & Durga November 27, 2014 at 10:27am Reply

    • Victoria: I’ll have to try Boston Ivy next, since the description online sounds interesting. November 27, 2014 at 12:15pm Reply

  • Monika Guerlinade: Mine would be, of course, Shalimar (EDP)……. and also L´Heure Bleue, 31 Rue Cambon, Musc Ravageur, and Magie Noire (vintage).
    Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it! November 27, 2014 at 10:37am Reply

    • Victoria: Mmm, the vintage Magie Noire is a stunning perfume. November 27, 2014 at 12:15pm Reply

  • Pklagrange: My anytime/anywhere fragrances are:

    Parfum d’Empire Azemour les Oranges
    Marni
    No 5 eau Premier
    Eau Claire des Merveilles
    Le Labo Ylang 49

    Great Question! Today being Thanksgiving, I’m wearing Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille so I will smell like a luscious cookie. November 27, 2014 at 10:56am Reply

    • Patricia: I considered Un Bois Vanille as well. Definitely wanted to go with a gourmand fragrance today! I also thought about Like This by ELDO because of the pumpkin, but I only have a tiny dab sample of it.

      Safran Troublant was the right choice, though. I just love the saffron and rose combination and will just resign myself to bringing a little decant with me for reapplication as it doesn’t last very long on me. November 27, 2014 at 11:20am Reply

    • Victoria: You are! And you’re making me crave Un Bois Vanille. 🙂 November 27, 2014 at 12:16pm Reply

  • Annette Reynolds: Am grateful for many things, but today I’m especially happy that the sun has just peeked out here in Tacoma, Washington, where we’ve had nothing but rain for what seems like days.

    I’m also thankful for Victoria and her blog. What a wonderful discovery it’s been for me…

    Because I have such a hard time finding fragrances that work for me, right now my “anytime/anywhere” list is very short, and a bit ecclectic; maybe even pedestrian!

    Atelier: Vanille Insensee (I find this fragrance to be chameleon-like on me, but most of the time it’s wonderful and has that ever-so-slightly different smell that most people don’t recognize.)

    La Maison de la Vanille: Vanille Givree des Antilles (I love wearing this to bed. I also love to layer this one with Zents “Sun”.)

    Mackie by Bob Mackie: This is probably my newest “find.” It just works for me, which is amazing. I get more compliments wearing this than just about anything else I put on. This seems to work both in cold weather and in hot (for me, anyway).

    Pacifica: Spanish Amber. I love this inexpensive little fragrance. I love putting it on, forgetting I’m wearing it, and then suddenly getting a whiff of the scent during the day. It always makes me smile. A real beauty for under $25.

    And here’s one I’d wear all the time, if I could only afford it:

    Lubin’s Akkad! November 27, 2014 at 11:42am Reply

    • Victoria: Thank you very much, Annette, for coming over and for sharing! Thank you to everyone. You all make this place special for me.

      I really need to find some Spanish Amber! Who wouldn’t be curious about something so affordable. Plus, it’s possible to make a great amber on a small budget. November 27, 2014 at 12:22pm Reply

    • Sun Mi: <3 Tacoma! Grew up in Bonney Lake and miss Washington so much! November 27, 2014 at 1:35pm Reply

    • Miss Kitty V: Another Washingtonian! I’ve bounced back and forth between Olympia and Portland… Always miss the Puget Sound area… November 27, 2014 at 2:25pm Reply

      • Annette Reynolds: You might not miss it so much today: windy, wet (with an early morning sunbreak), and 55 degrees…

        We didn’t get a good fall this year. Sunny and dryish right up to the moment the leaves started to turn and then it rained like the devil. And after that we had freezing temps for 4 or 5 days straight, which pretty much took care of any fall color we might have had. 🙁

        Happy Thanksgiving, all! November 27, 2014 at 2:39pm Reply

  • Austenfan: It’s fun to read everyone’s answers. My go to scents are quite numerous:
    Infusion d’Iris, Bvlgari Pour Femme & Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert, PdN Eau d’Eté, Calyx, YSL Paris and Nina Ricci Nina ( the old version). November 27, 2014 at 11:49am Reply

    • Victoria: Happy to see Calyx and Paris on your list! 🙂 November 27, 2014 at 12:20pm Reply

      • Austenfan: I hope you noticed that I’ve actually got 3 Grojsman creations on my list, as she was co-creator of Pour Femme I think. November 27, 2014 at 4:06pm Reply

        • Victoria: As she says, her finger was on it, but she doesn’t claim it as her own. But when I smell it, I definitely notice her distinctive signature. November 30, 2014 at 9:37am Reply

          • Austenfan: Wasn’t it Lorson who authored it?
            To me it feels very Grojsman, warm and inviting.
            I will wear Paris tomorrow. It will do me good in this cold en wet weather.
            By the way I got some Osmanthus Oolong. I’ve yet to brew it but it smells just like TDC Osmanthus. The tea-place was fun. November 30, 2014 at 5:15pm Reply

            • Victoria: I don’t remember who worked on it, I only know that Sophia put a few finishing touches.

              Mmm, osmanthus oolong is one of my favorites! December 1, 2014 at 8:10am Reply

  • Lizzy: I have been enjoying both reviews and more topic-oriented posts like this all year and thank you for them all!

    I would say that Sonoma Scent Studio Fig Tree and Jour Ensoleille are my “go anywhere anytime” standby scents–they can make me feel comfortably casual or quietly elegant, depending on my mood. If I really want to dress it up, I’ll break out Ineke Field Notes from Paris, SSS Vintage Rose/Rose Volupte, or Chanel No. 5. November 27, 2014 at 11:59am Reply

    • Victoria: You’re welcome, Lizzy! Thank you for letting me know. 🙂

      I was just sampling Sonoma Scent Studio Fig Tree, and I agree that it’s terrific and feels very versatile. November 27, 2014 at 12:18pm Reply

  • Mel: Timbuktu by L’Artisan – awesome all year round November 27, 2014 at 11:59am Reply

    • Victoria: That one deserves to be in the niche perfume legend list. November 27, 2014 at 12:17pm Reply

  • rainboweyes: I’m surprised to see Iris Silver Mist on your list! Does it work in the summer? I have to try it!

    Most of my fragrances are related to a particular time of the year, my only allrounder is Burlesque by Maria Candida Gentile. November 27, 2014 at 12:00pm Reply

    • Victoria: Yes, it does. At least, for me. I don’t find it particularly heavy. November 27, 2014 at 12:17pm Reply

      • Cornelia Blimber: ISM is not heavy, and is wearable in all seasons. Nevertheless it has a strong and very particular character. I would not classify it as ”versatile, every day” but rather as ”true love, must remain special”. November 28, 2014 at 4:20am Reply

        • rainboweyes: I don’t think of it as too heavy but it has a quality to it that makes me associate it with cold seasons – late autumn or early spring – maybe it’s the earthiness and rooty vibe. Anyway, I’m going to try it in the summer!
          On the other hand, I sometimes layer Lumiére Blanche and Dzongkha in the summer, so maybe wearing ISM isn’t that unusual… November 28, 2014 at 4:14pm Reply

          • Cornelia Blimber: You are absolutely right about earthiness and rooty vibe, but that is the initial phase. After that the perfume is airy, breezy, and after that flowery and then almost immaterial. It is a perfume with many twists and surprises. Some people (I think of you, George!) call it rather cold, an ice queen.
            And even the earthiness has a connection with summer, in my feeling. Think of heavy, fertile soil..A most exciting perfume. November 28, 2014 at 4:32pm Reply

        • Victoria: For me, it is a really an every day perfume. I just love iris and rooty scents, and I find them very easy to wear. November 30, 2014 at 9:55am Reply

          • Cornelia Blimber: Two Lutens perfumes are so special for me, that I don’t want them being too familiar: Iris Silver Mist and Ambre Sultan. December 2, 2014 at 6:55am Reply

  • Hannah: Comme des Garcons, Black Cashmere, and Tubéreuse Criminelle.
    My next bottle will be Eau des Merveilles and I think it fits the criteria.

    My least versatile is Kingdom. November 27, 2014 at 12:30pm Reply

    • Victoria: I can see why. Kingdom is beautiful, but it’s quite demanding. November 30, 2014 at 9:26am Reply

  • Soraya: Keeping this list short is hard work 😉

    AG : Duel
    L’artisan : Mure et Musc
    Serge Lutens : Daim Blond
    Lalique : Nilang November 27, 2014 at 1:03pm Reply

    • Victoria: 🙂 Short but so fun and diverse! November 30, 2014 at 9:27am Reply

  • Alicia: I organize my fragrances by seasons, but I notice that I tend to wear through all the seasons Arpege, Chanel #5 and 19, and 31 Rue Cambon.

  • Cybele: I can always wear Envy and Osmanthe Yunnan. I was also thinking Homage Amouage but wouldn’t wear this one to the doctor’s office, for example. Least versatile probably Le Labo Rose 31 (needs some city smells to go with), Back to Black and Love-must be in the mood, or for anything tuberose or gardenia I need the right setting or occasion. November 27, 2014 at 1:09pm Reply

    • Victoria: Back to Black is my least favorite too. I definitely need to be in the right mood to wear it, but I like it very much. November 30, 2014 at 9:29am Reply

  • limegreen: Happy TG to those who celebrate the day! And for some of us it’s a nice lazy day to relax and check in on BdJ. 🙂 What fun to read everyone’s responses.
    My seasonless favorites have changed recently — this is my first cool weather season for En Passant and I love it for these cool temps as much as I loved it this past summer and fall. Guess I just love it! Also, Jo Loves Pomelo, diptyque L’Ombre Dans L’eau (edt and edp) and Lutens Fleurs d’Oranger. November 27, 2014 at 2:06pm Reply

    • limegreen: I’m experimenting with Osmanthe Yunnan as year-round scent, trying it out with cool temps and enjoying it so far. November 27, 2014 at 4:11pm Reply

    • Victoria: Hope that you’re enjoying the holiday weekend! 🙂

      Is Pomelo a bitter grapefruit? November 30, 2014 at 9:32am Reply

    • sunette: I absolutely agree with Diptyque L’Ombre Dans (EDP)! I got a sample at first and thought the smell was a bit too unconventional and perhaps too odd for perfume for me, but for some reason I could not stay away from it and soon enough my sample was done so I had to get a bottle! It really is great for every season! So fresh with such depth that it seems to adapt to your mood, whatever it is at the time of the day or season in the year:-) December 6, 2014 at 6:04pm Reply

  • Miss Kitty V: Happy holidays to those who celebrate! This is my first day off in years to be with my family– the benefit of being unemployed, ha ha ha! 🙂 I can so sympathize with those who have to work.

    My all-season scents are all aldehydic florals. Caleche, Chanel No. 5 and No. 22, Arpege (not a favorite of mine, actually, but it layers nicely with other scents), Vraie Blonde, Vega, Liu, Caron Nocturnes, Weil Antilope, Coty L’Aimant. Uh… I guess no one needed an exhaustive (exhausting?) list, but there it is. I also like incense scents all year round, as I think they’re warm and comforting during the cold months, and have sort of an exotic, sexy thing going on in the summer. November 27, 2014 at 2:33pm Reply

    • Karen: What do you layer with Arpege? I’ve worn it for years and can’t imagine what would work with it (but honestly I don’t do a lot of layering). Thanks! November 27, 2014 at 3:06pm Reply

    • Victoria: There is always a silver lining, isn’t there! I hope that the next year will turn out exactly as you wish and you will find your ideal work.

      Can’t agree more on incense. It’s much more versatile than seems at first, and I’ve enjoyed many of my incense year around. November 30, 2014 at 9:34am Reply

  • Erry: My list of all-season perfume is:
    1. Guerlain Apres LÓndee
    2. Chanel Cristalle
    3. Lártisan La Chasse aux Papillons
    4. Annick Goutal Songes
    5. Annick Goutal Rose Absolue
    6. Chanel Les Exclusifs 31 Rue Cambon –> I don’t have this but I’ve sampled it. It is on my long-list of perfumes to be purchased. November 27, 2014 at 3:42pm Reply

    • Victoria: Never too late! 🙂 I wish Shalimar was still sold in the EDC version. November 30, 2014 at 9:39am Reply

  • Rose: I just given a gift recently–a local, inexpensive (a few dollars) Jasmine perfume here in India. And, boy, does it smell like fresh Jasmine flowers. I buy fresh Jasmine flowers every week to wear on my hair and the perfume smells just like the real thing!Jasmine here is a 24/7 365 scent. No one seems to tire of it. 🙂

    This blog has really inspired me to get creative with my perfume collection. I recently purchased a hardcover version of the book ‘Almond Eyes, Lotus Feet.’ I’ve had the Kindle version for quite a while but the hardcover is just deliciously beautiful. It’s so fascinating to read about old-world, beauty rituals (the chapter on scents is wonderful) written by an Indian princess. It’s great!

    I’m off to get a new perfume tomorrow. I’ll be reading your blog late into the night to help me decide what to buy. 🙂 November 27, 2014 at 5:20pm Reply

    Very close to making this list are Heure Exquise, 31 Rue Cambon and Encre Noir for Men. I also wear these all year round, but to me they have distinct moods that make them (just a little) less versatile. November 27, 2014 at 5:49pm Reply

    • Victoria: I forgot Tocca Colette, which is one of my most worn perfumes recently. It’s such a great, all-seasons, all-moods perfume. November 30, 2014 at 9:46am Reply

  • Courant: I have a ‘jaded’ perfume list, the ones I turn when when I have little tolerance, feel burnt out. They are Yardley Iris layered with Apres L’Ondee or Pierre de Lune and Eau Claire des Merveilles. Today’s scent diary includes fresh coffee grounds, wet grass steaming in spring sunlight, clove-aromatic carnations in my garden, damp dog, and warm cinnamon brioche. Happy thanksgiving to my Northern Hemisphere friends! I shall wear ELDO Like This in your honour tonight. November 27, 2014 at 9:12pm Reply

    • Victoria: I heard from others that this version of Mitsouko is very nice, but I myself haven’t tried it. November 30, 2014 at 9:48am Reply

  • Tourmaline: Hi Victoria,

    The first seasonless perfume that I’d have to list would be the one that was my “signature” fragrance for four years until I branched out – Y. It is all class.

    The second would be the one that I chose as my “default” fragrance back in 1985 – the original Oscar. To my nose, Oscar has always been subtle and beautiful, a fragrance that I can wear with any colour and in any season.

    I would add –

    – just about any of my violet fragrances, especially “Le Dix” (and I note that violet and iris fragrances feature amongst your choices, Victoria);
    – Tea Rose and Paris (Roses are such classic flowers that I can wear the scent all year round);
    – Bellodgia;
    – White Shoulders (cool enough for summer, rich enough for winter);
    – Lipstick Rose;
    – Chamade;
    – L’Heure Bleue (with indigo, especially velvet);
    – my childhood Bird of Paradise (a classic soft oriental by Avon), of which I have a large stock thanks to eBay;
    – Ysatis;
    – Chant D’Arômes;
    – and of course, Mitsouko.

    It is no coincidence that nine of these fragrances are displayed on my bedroom dressing-table and in my bathroom, because I use them so often.

    Here in Brisbane we had a dreadful storm with huge hailstones yesterday afternoon. It is estimated that over 100 million dollars worth of damage was done, and overnight the army was called in to help with the cleanup. It was the worst storm that we’ve had since 1985. I got off lightly because only my bathroom window was broken, but others had roofs blown off, many more windows smashed, cars damaged and so on.

    The storm got me thinking about fragrances that a person might wear after some traumatic event. I might choose –

    – an energizing citrus such as Eau de Guerlain or Eau Dynamisante;
    – something bright and cheerful like Chanel No. 5 or Tocade;
    – a large, loud fragrance such as Insolence or Boucheron, as a form of battle armour;
    – something strong and rich like Youth Dew or Poison, to bolster my courage;
    – a unisex perfume like Jicky;
    – or something that lends quiet confidence, such as Y or Après L’Ondée.

    Perhaps not surprisingly, my fragrance today is Après L’Ondée, for the calm after the storm. November 28, 2014 at 2:52am Reply

    • Karen: So sorry to hear of this! Glad you are safe and escaped with minor damage, although any damage to one’s home is traumatizing. Love your list and the thoughts of what one wears after such an event. November 28, 2014 at 8:09am Reply

      • Tourmaline: Hi Karen,

        Thank you for your kind words. It was amazing to watch the news after the storm and see footage of one of our airports, with light aircraft tossed around and turned over as though they were toy planes. The wind was apparently as strong as it would be in some cyclones. We are in the middle of what is known as “storm season” over here, and we have the summer to go, however the majority of storms are not too bad. It is fortunate that this one didn’t happen during the G20 Leader’s Summit, a fortnight ago. That would have been a disaster!

        Yes, perfume is incredibly versatile in terms of personal expression. Like my favourite life-affirming red lipstick, it can be such a morale-boosting accessory. November 28, 2014 at 9:29pm Reply

    • Patricia: What a terrifying ordeal you have been through, Tourmaline! Was anyone injured by the hailstones?

      Like Karen, I like your list of perfumes that could be worn for comfort or strength. Apres l’Ondee is both fitting and beautiful. November 29, 2014 at 8:41am Reply

      • Tourmaline: Hi Patricia,

        Thank you for your concern. According to news reports, 39 people were injured, but none seriously. There were some remarkable near-misses, though, and some people are counting themselves very lucky, including a woman who was just inches away when a tree crashed through the roof into her lounge room, and a man who was almost hit when his roof caved in.

        About 50 schools were closed on the day after the storm (Friday) due to damage, especially broken windows.

        Of course the storm was nothing like the tornadoes and hurricanes that you suffer over there in the USA. We are fortunate here in Brisbane that we don’t get many very bad storms; in the northern part of Queensland they get worse ones. We get some terrible flooding at times, as in the floods of 2011, which killed 38 people.

        We perfume-lovers are fortunate to have our choice of fragrances to help cheer us up and bolster our strength!

        I’m also sparing a thought for all of the animals that are traumatized during storms. One of my fellow unit-dwellers told me that, during the storm, she had a terrified dog show up on her side of the unit block, so she spent some time babysitting him. When the rain and hail stopped she attached a pair of pantyhose to his collar and walked him to the local vet. Given the recent threads about dog-walking scents, I should have asked her whether she happened to be wearing any particular perfume at the time! November 29, 2014 at 7:50pm Reply

        • Patricia: Your neighbor was very kind to take an unknown dog under her wing during the storm. And the pantyhose leash was brilliant! November 30, 2014 at 9:02am Reply

          • Victoria: That’s what I call a creative solution! 🙂 November 30, 2014 at 10:18am Reply

    • Courant: Hi Tourmaline, I wanted to chime in and say I also love ‘Y’ which has become hard to get since the retrospective ones came out. It fits with my ‘old chypre sister’ persona and the love I have for No 19, Cristalle, Heure Exquise etc. Over the ditch here in Auckland we followed the news reports of that terrible hailstorm with great concern. All the best November 29, 2014 at 4:09pm Reply

      • Tourmaline: Hi Courant,

        It is so lovely to hear of another perfume lover who appreciates Y! I must sample No. 19 and Heure Exquise sometime. I used to have a greater feeling of excitement when I thought about all of the perfume treasures that I have yet to explore, but these days I feel more of a sense of urgency, to try fragrances before they are altered any more than they have been already, and to buy vintage stock from eBay and other sources while I can. As you know, Y is a case in point!

        Thank you for you kind words. We are fortunate that we don’t experience the type of earthquakes that you get over there in New Zealand. November 29, 2014 at 8:25pm Reply

        • Michaela No 2: Yes, Y is great indeed, I used to wear it in my 20s! It felt so elegant and right all the time. It is, maybe, the only classical chypre I can wear, but where I live summers frequently go around 40 Celsius and it didn’t fit that well. I remember though it smelled wonderful in winter, crisp and green like a crushed tulip stem. December 1, 2014 at 9:34am Reply

          • Tourmaline: Hi Michaela,

            It’s wonderful that Y felt so right for you when you were in your twenties, especially in winter. Yes, extreme heat does call for a particular type of fragrance. During such weather I tend to reach for citrus or marine perfumes, or perhaps a cool floral. December 5, 2014 at 7:09pm Reply

    • Victoria: I’m glad to hear that you’re ok, but what an ordeal! Above all, it’s impressive that you can keep your spirits up, and I hope that everything will get back to normal quickly. November 30, 2014 at 9:49am Reply

      • Tourmaline: Thanks, Victoria. December 5, 2014 at 7:11pm Reply

  • Nora Szekely: Hi Eliza, Victoria and perfume lovers,

    Maybe because of being mentioned by others before but Guerlain scents pop to my mind too. Or simply Guerlain’s perfumers create most of the versatile scents on the market.
    so here’s my top 5:
    1. Shalimar Parfum Initial : it has a lightness fitting hot weather (and we have really hot summer where I live) but it’s warm and powdery aspect makes it fit to winter too.
    2. Original Shalimar extrait de parfum : anywhere anytime, fits all mood, elegant yet wearable to me
    3. Chanel Cristalle EDT : I read that it did not sell that well during colder months however I find its green undertones soothing in the cold and refreshing in the summer.
    4. Chanel no. 5 extrait de parfum current formulation : I bought it the first time in my life this summer (guess it is a scent I had to grow into) however it is always with me ever since and I reach for it no matter the temperature or the occasion. Recently though I was in a wicked mood and I tried mixing it with Mancera Roses Greedy, I would recommend to rose lovers to do the same unless you’re a purist 😉
    5. Annick Goutal Mandragore EDT : If you smell it, it seems a pure summer indulgence. However I sprayed some on my wrist as an experiment a few weeks ago and somehow it still worked. Other aspects of the scent emerged, to my nose in the summer it is citrusy but in the cold, ginger and anise took center stage on my skin rendering it sweeter and spicier at the same time.
    Others to try for any season or occasion : Guerlain Mitsouko extrait de parfum, Miss Dior original EDT, Guerlain L’heure bleue current EDT and Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 (on its own or mixed with your favourite scent to prolong its longevity).
    Lovely picture of the Grande Place, I recentl;y visited Brussels as my best friend lives near (in Halle) and I really like this city. November 28, 2014 at 6:20am Reply

    • Victoria: Thank you so much for this list and beautiful descriptions. You’ve inspired me, and I’m wearing Mandragore right now. 🙂 November 30, 2014 at 10:01am Reply

  • solanace: Fun question, and reading everyone’s answers is so interesting!

    For me, Shalimar, l’Heure Bleue, Vent Vert and Rochas Femme always feel right, depending on what I’m craving, but no matter the weather – they all stand their own on a cold, perfume-thirsty day and bloom beautifully without getting all cloying when it’s rainforest-warm. But I know I’m a bit of a fiend, and that wearing Femme to work in the tropic might not be something a normal person would go for, lol. November 28, 2014 at 8:08am Reply

    I needn’t mention the already much aforementioned Chanel No. 19, Infusion d’Iris, and Au Thé Vert, a trio of personal favorites that always feel perfect.

    More recently, I’ve also found that Guerlain Vetiver and Ô de Lancome fulfill my need for perfumes that feel right at any time, no matter what.

    (I’m just realizing now, if I’m not mistaken, that all of these perfumes have green-tinted juice or bottles. Coincidence?) November 28, 2014 at 7:56pm Reply

      • Loric: I bought the extrait and the edt and wear a combination of both. It lasts all day for me using both. December 29, 2014 at 7:28pm Reply

  • Tara C: My easy to wear favorites are Dzongkha, Traversée du Bosphore, Bois Oriental and Ylang 49. I love Mon Précieux Nectar as well but can only enjoy it when it is cold out, and we are nowhere near winter temps here in San Diego. It was fabulous last winter in Montréal though! November 29, 2014 at 6:52pm Reply

    • Victoria: I see what you mean about Mon Précieux Nectar, Tara. I wore it once on a warm day, and it was too much for me. It’s the combination of white floral, almond and the honey like notes that makes it a bit too dense. On a cold day, it was perfect though. November 30, 2014 at 10:11am Reply

  • meganinstmaxime: I love reading everyone’s favourite all year perfumes. I’m just understanding how perfumes can smell right or wrong with the change of seasons so it is actually a tricky one for me and I haven’t worn some of my perfumes in all seasons yet.

    Chergui – perhaps this works a little better for me in summer though
    Seville a l’aube
    Une Rose Vermeille
    Daim Blond
    Orange Sanguine
    Shalimar November 30, 2014 at 4:34am Reply

  • Christy: I’ll wear Frederic Malle Lys Mediterranee, Vero Profumo Mito, and Parfums Nicolai l’Eau Chic year round. Everything else I have seems seasonal to me, or at least falls into either a “summer only” or “not-summer” category. November 30, 2014 at 8:46am Reply

    • Victoria: I can see why those feel versatile. They have distinctive characters, but they aren’t too heavy or big. It’s easy to imagine them in different situations. November 30, 2014 at 10:16am Reply

  • Rose: Lulee and Victoria…it’s called ‘Gopala Jasmine perfume.’ I already tried to find out if it’s widely available but it doesn’t seem to be. A family friend told me that it used to be manufactured in the 70’s. I wasn’t able to find it in the old world shops of Bangalore. 🙁
    I did buy some pure Attars (Rose, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Khus and Jasmine). Since it’s winter here we dry our hair with naturally perfumed smoke. It’s leaves the hair smelling ever so sweet. Living in India is like living in perfume paradise. 🙂 November 30, 2014 at 2:49pm Reply

    • Victoria: Nice! Today I will wear Le Parfum de Therese. 🙂 December 1, 2014 at 8:15am Reply

  • Michaela No 2: I wear all my perfumes all round the year, just in different amounts, going the lighter the warmer it is. But, the ones I really feel they are not confined by season are:
    1.Dior Pure Poison
    2.Armani Code Luna (a great lether-citrusy-powdery perfume that was destroyed by its famous brother Code)
    3. Givenchy Very Irresistible edt – I’ve deen loving this one dearly since it was launched, it never dissapoints with its light anise-rose sparkling combo.
    Love all the three of them with all my heart. I’m not a niche perfumista, I find all the niche, even when done right, boring. I just can’t get myself to wear niche perfume, apart Keiko Mecheri Loukhoum, which is nice and fun. 🙂 December 1, 2014 at 9:28am Reply

    • Michaela No 2: Prada Infusion d’homme is also soothing and calming, only I wished it didn’t have the homme label on it, it makes me feel strange when I spray it on. December 1, 2014 at 9:50am Reply

    • Victoria: As long as you enjoy the perfume, it doesn’t matter what label it has! December 1, 2014 at 11:50am Reply

  • Sofie: Chiming in again… I just thought how very interesting this thread is. There seem to be a few ‘nuclear’ perfumes that pop up again and again, and then there are the other ones wich cover quite a variety types of perfume. Such a lovely mix of classics with very personal favourites… December 2, 2014 at 5:02am Reply

    • Victoria: I was thinking this too. Some perfumes are definitely seen as versatile by many, and then it’s fun to see other, very different selections too. I love these threads, because they always remind me of some other interesting perfumes or maybe old favorites that somehow got neglected. December 2, 2014 at 5:49am Reply

  • Alexandra: I wear different perfumes every season of the year. For example I would never wear bottega veneta in the summer, it screams winter as I would never wear eau de gentiane Blanche in the winter, it screams summer. However there are two I wear all year round and persistently so, ever since they were launched. Love by Chloe, which is also my “office” perfume and carnal flower, which I save for special occasions (the price tag is to blame for that). They both smell wonderfully be it summer or winter December 2, 2014 at 5:38pm Reply

    • Victoria: True, some perfumes have very seasonal associations. For instance, I wear Angel all year around, but I mostly crave it in the winter. December 3, 2014 at 8:37am Reply

  • Francesca: Cacharel Noa, Prada Infusion D’Homme,
    Hermes Un Jardin Sur le Nil are my easy to wear favorites. December 5, 2014 at 10:12am Reply
