Most Versatile Perfumes : Poll

A few years ago I asked your opinion on the most versatile perfumes in your collections, or what fragrances you reached for when you couldn’t decide what to wear. My reader Hamamelis asked if I could run the poll again, and here it is.

Please share fragrances you think are the most versatile. I will update this post with your top 5 selections. My own answers will be in the comments.

  • Lizzy K.: Chanel No. 5 Eau Première, definitely. January 20, 2016 at 7:13am Reply

    • Nick: Yes, an excellent update to the original. The character is well maintained. January 20, 2016 at 8:26am Reply

    • Katherine: I agree! January 20, 2016 at 8:41am Reply

  • Eva: Chanel no 19 EDP ! January 20, 2016 at 7:44am Reply

    • Eva: Adding some since everybody mentions several : Chanel no 5 perfume, Chanel Eau de Cologne, Chanel Cristalle EDT, Dune…. January 20, 2016 at 4:03pm Reply

  • Michaela: When I don’t have any idea about what to wear, my first 5 choices are, in this order: Bulgari Eau Parfumee au The Vert, Hermes Eau des Merveilles, Jacomo Silences, Lalique Encre Noire for men and Burberry Brit Rhythm for women.

If a had a bigger collection, I would also reach for Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere, too, and for Nicolai’s Le Temps d’Une Fete, Hermes Eau de Narcisse Bleu, Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine or Dior Escale a Portofino. January 20, 2016 at 7:45am Reply

    • Michaela: Beautiful photo! Thank you for the link. January 20, 2016 at 7:47am Reply

  • Lily: Houbigant orangeurs en fleur. It is currently my only FB but that is because it’s my go-to. To me, on me, it is soft enough to wear to work and bright enough to perk up even a Monday morning, but also alluring enough for a romantic date (maybe it’s not out and out sex-pot but good for a long walk on the beach type date), and also a combination of notes that is comforting bc of being familiar but interesting bc it is an unexpected (at least in terms of where current popular perfumes are) combination. One of my friends thinks it’s primarily floral; another thinks it’s orange; another thinks it’s wood and spice. I smell them all and smile as each facet presents itself to my attention. • Nora Szekely: It’s such an exquisite scent, I agree with you. January 20, 2016 at 9:42am Reply

    • AndreaR: Came across this in a small perfume store while vacationing in Venice, Italy last summer. It was perfect in the heat and humidity and I fell in love with it. It’s on my list too 🙂 January 20, 2016 at 6:56pm Reply

  • Connie: L’Air de Rien would be mine. Never feels wrong. January 20, 2016 at 7:49am Reply

    • rosiemay: mine too! January 20, 2016 at 9:16am Reply

  • Elizabeth: 1. Frederic Malle L’Eau d’Hiver
    2. Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere,
    3. Prada Infusion d’Iris (the original eau de parfum)
    4. Chanel Misia
    5. Chanel No. 5 eau de toilette (the Chanels seem to fit well into this category) January 20, 2016 at 7:51am Reply

    • Nick: I agree with your first four choices easily. January 20, 2016 at 8:25am Reply

    • SophieC: Beautiful list, so elegant and interesting and versatile. January 20, 2016 at 9:12am Reply

    • JoDee: I absolutely agree with your top three! I would add
      4. Après L’Ondee
      5. Dulcis in Fundo January 21, 2016 at 10:19pm Reply

      • JoDee: Or possibly for #5 PdN Kiss Me Tender. January 21, 2016 at 10:47pm Reply

  • Caroline: As a fickle perfumista, this list could easily be amended, but here are 5 I’d rarely regret opting for: Eau Premiere, Chamade, No 19 (any version), Heure Exquise and Une Fleur de Cassie. January 20, 2016 at 8:06am Reply

    • SophieC: Another perfect list! January 20, 2016 at 9:13am Reply

  • Vanie: Infusion d’Iris, Stella by Stella McCartney and Cristalle EDP. January 20, 2016 at 8:11am Reply

    • Vanie: Oh! And I forgot Grand Neroli (probably because I don’t wear it quite as much in cold weather…) January 20, 2016 at 9:10am Reply

  • Austenfan: Infusion d’Iris, Bvlgari Pour Femme, Amouage Beloved, Eau d’Eté, Dior Homme, Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert and probably lots of others that I’m now forgetting. January 20, 2016 at 8:15am Reply

    • Nick: Ah, I like Infusion d’Iris. It is luminous, transparent, and elegant! January 20, 2016 at 8:24am Reply

Bvlgari Pour Femme is one of those lovely scents that few people ever mention but that never fails to fill me with delight. January 20, 2016 at 4:17pm Reply

          • Austenfan: Precisely! January 20, 2016 at 5:13pm Reply

    Jour d’Hermes – Hermes
    Orange Sanguine – Atelier Cologne
    Santal Massoia – Hermes
    Ninfeo Mio – Annick Goutal
    Yu Son – Altaia

It seems, with one exception, versatile means a lot of citrus for me! These are the ones I wear all year round, day or night.
    Cheers
    Safran January 20, 2016 at 8:17am Reply

    • Nick: Orange Sanguine and Jour d’Hermès are easily the most versatile. Pleasing yet elegant! January 20, 2016 at 8:23am Reply

  • Nick: In this case, I go for something that is mostly for me to smell, i.e. with little or moderate sillage, and simple. It should also be easily accessible, easy to find and purchase.

I go for Lalique Encre Noire nowadays. Otherwise, it used to be L’Occitane Immortelle de Corse or Égoïste Chanel. January 20, 2016 at 8:22am Reply

  • spe: Chanel no. 5 – I prefer the EDP with a quick shot of the parfum (I decant it into a sprayer). I get no lasting power from the current EDT. For me, almost any Chanel would work. They do well with my chemistry, personality, and lifestyle.

Dans Tes Bras. It’s fresh and interesting.

    Amouage Journey or Honour Woman.

If I had to chose just one: No. 5 EDP. January 20, 2016 at 8:23am Reply

  • Bastet: My top five easy elegant perfumes, in no particular order, are Prada Infusion d’Iris; Chanel No. 5; Chloe Love, Chloe; Cacharel Noa; and Oscar de la Renta Esprit d’Oscar. January 20, 2016 at 8:23am Reply

    • Nora Szekely: Noa and Esprit d’Oscar are two of my favourite cheap and chic, effortlessly elegant scents 🙂 January 20, 2016 at 9:44am Reply

    Bvlgari Omnia
    Chanel Bois de Iles
    CSP Amour de Cacao
Guerlain Vetiver January 20, 2016 at 8:33am Reply

  • Chin C.: My top 5 are

    Eau Sauvage
    Fahrenheit
    Un Jardin Sur Le Nil
    Cristalle Edt
    Eau d’Orange Verte January 20, 2016 at 8:39am Reply

    • irem: I love your selection! Cristalle EdT is my most worn fragrance of all times, I love it. Fahrenheit was my very first fragrance. You can never go wrong with Eau Savage or Eau d’Orange Verte. Un Jardin, I will sample again when I am at Sephora. If you put it in this list must be good! January 20, 2016 at 12:33pm Reply

      • Chin C.: Hi irem! Glad you like them!

Fahrenheit was my very first fragrance too, and I started wearing it long before I start to read extensively about fragrance. To me it smells very classic but never old-fashioned. The smell on the sprayer (if you get what I mean) reminds me of the good old days.

The eau d’orange verte was an instant love for me when I first smelled it. But I can’t wear it now as I’ve become allergic to it. The closest alternative I can find is Atelier Cologne Trefle Pur but still it’s nowhere close.

Sur Le Nil won’t make this list if I’m picking top 4 instead of top 5, as it’s a bit on the sunny, summery, casual side when considering the versatility. Nevertheless, it’s one of my favorites. Now I think about it… Talking about versatility maybe I’ll replace Sur Le Nil by L’Artisan Timbuktu. These two have lots in common to me but Timbuktu is decidedly more ‘neutral’ in mood. January 21, 2016 at 12:48am Reply

  • Danaki: I have fail-safe perfumes.

SL Santal Majescule (so elegant) in winter, Hermes Jour d’Hermes in summer, PdN Weekend anytime. These days, i find Marni actually does the trick and recently my addition to this collection is De Profundis by Serge Lutens. Got really lucky as the black atomizer offer (2x30ml) was in the UK this Christmas and I got mine with a substantial discount!

Sorry…had to gush at my recent purchase. January 20, 2016 at 8:47am Reply

  • Katherine: My top 5 are Chanel 5 Eau Premiere, Bulgari au the bleu, Burberry Brit Rhythm for her, Tom Ford Noir EDP for Men, Chanel 5 Parfum. If I had a 6th it would easily be Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights- this inexpensive gem gets me more compliments than any other fragrance. All of these are very easy to wear. I only spritz once because of my family’s allergies though. January 20, 2016 at 8:49am Reply

  • Judy: For versatility: Botega Veneta (original and/or Legere)
For elegance: 24 Faubourg by Hermes January 20, 2016 at 8:50am Reply

    • Katherine: If I had 24 Faubourg, it would bump Tom Ford Noir or Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights. I love it. Whenever I’m in Sephora I spritz myself. January 20, 2016 at 9:11am Reply

      • Amanda Santana: I almost included Fancy Nights. That’s my go-to for winter. That’s certainly a drug store gem!!!!! January 26, 2016 at 11:18pm Reply

    • Vanie: Nice choices January 20, 2016 at 9:32am Reply

    • Floragal: Bottega is my pick too.
Incredibly versatile. January 20, 2016 at 10:08pm Reply

  • Hamamelis: Thank you for posting this poll again Victoria, and thank you everyone for being such good sports in participating! It seems some scents will be winners again, but I am also curious after the ones that are mentioned that I haven’t smelled yet.
At the moment my most versatile scents are:

    1. Heure Exquise or (cheating somewhat) no 19 in any version
    2. Dzongkha
    3. no 5 Eau Premiere
    4. Hiris (Infusion d’iris Absolue coming close)
    5. OJ’s Woman

I think in summer Christalle would be up there, and as for Spe, any Chanel really, but also…a lot of Duchaufours (wearing the lovely Ostara now. January 20, 2016 at 8:55am Reply

    • limegreen: Thanks for asking Victoria to run this poll! Always fun to see everyone’s lists, no matter what the theme is.
Glad you are on the mend, too. January 20, 2016 at 11:54am Reply

      • Hamamelis: Thank you Limegreen, it is very good to have some energies again! I have been testing Le Labo Iris 39, and if we could make a list of 10 it would be on it. January 20, 2016 at 1:57pm Reply

        • limegreen: Hamamelis — what a long haul you’ve had, glad you’re back up with energy again! I didn’t realize we were listing only 5, oh well.
I discovered Heure Exquise because of your love for it, I never got around to thanking you!
Iris 39 sneaks up on you in a lovely way. January 20, 2016 at 8:01pm Reply

    • Tati: I love Dzongkha and much prefer the Absolue version to the regular Infusion d’Iris (although I have the EDT which might be sharper than the EDP) so now you’ve raised my curiosity to try OJ’s Woman! And I, too, am in the middle of a cloud of Ostara now, so lovely! January 21, 2016 at 3:19pm Reply

      • Hamamelis: Hi Tati, OJ’s Woman is a unique scent, often described as a forest perfume because of the hemlock. It is a green perfume, but dark green to my nose, and there is a lovely jasmin hiding in it. It does contain Iso Super though, I have no problems with that but some perfumistas are very sensitive to it. I am happy to send you a sample.
Dzongkha is vying with 19/Heure Exquise for number 1! January 21, 2016 at 3:29pm Reply

        • Tati: Thank you, Hamamelis! Such a kind offer! I would love to sample it. January 21, 2016 at 3:37pm Reply

          • Hamamelis: You can send Victoria a mail with your address and ask her to pass it on to me, I am happy to send it! January 21, 2016 at 3:40pm Reply

    • OperaFan: Hyacinth is such a magical note. I love many, Many perfumes because its presence and HE is among the top. Others include Chamade, First, Safari, Grand Amour and Bluebells (Penhaligon).

Thank you for the suggested poll. Since our taste change with time (aided by our growing knowledge/acquaintances), I think it’s worth reassessing and revisiting every few years. Also a great way to share ideas. January 26, 2016 at 10:35am Reply

  • Iuliana: Interesting (and challenging) question – for me the answer is not as straightforward as I thought. Here is my list (in a more wintry version):
    1. Guerlain’s Lys Soleia;
    2. Penhaligon’s Amaranthine;
    3. Monsillage’s Vol 870 YUL-CDG;
    4. Burberry Brit Rhythm ;

  • rosiemay: For Autumn and winter/cold weather
L’Air d’Rien, Epic woman, lolita lempicka, Encre Noir pour Homme, Cuir de Lancome. Les Ambre des Merveilles. Azemour les Oranges and Silver Iris.
    Spring/ summer;
Infusion d’Iris EDP, Iris Poudre, No.19 (any concentration).

  • Nora Szekely: Hi Victoria and perfume lovers,

    My list

    1. Carnal Flower by Frederic Malle
    2. Coco extrait by Chanel
    3. Angel by Thierry Mugler
    4. Shalimar Parfum Initial by Guerlain
    5. Chanel no. 5 extrait by Chanel January 20, 2016 at 9:34am Reply

    • Surbhi: Carnal flower is on my list to get. January 20, 2016 at 9:59am Reply

      • Nora Szekely: My first Frederick Malle I smelled 1 year ago and bought last spring. Sigh. It’s quite unique but I find that it works for me in winter, spring, summer, day and night. It may be too much of a diva for everyday use but I don’t care. January 20, 2016 at 11:03am Reply

        • Karen (A): No such thing as a perfume that’s too much of a diva! CF is wonderful! January 20, 2016 at 4:54pm Reply

        • Notturno7: I agree with you,Nora and Karen A. Every day is precious and ‘worthy’ of a great perfume. I love CF and supposedly there is a real tuberose essential oil in there and that’s why it costs more- at least that’s what they told me at Barneys January 25, 2016 at 3:42am Reply

  • Angeline: I think there are 2 camps for versatility for me : when I don’t feel like wearing anything too strong but still wish to have a scent, and when I want the fragrance to work in different situations.

For the first scenario, I’d choose something neutral, quiet and will not be too bothered about lasting power :

    1. Hermès Poivre Samarcande
    2. Hermès Un Jardin en Méditerranée
    3. Guerlain Après l’Ondée
    4. Hermès Un Jardin sur le Toit

For the second, I’d prefer something still quiet but a little more interesting :

    1. Chanel n°19
    2. Chanel Misia
    3. Hermès Santal Massoïa
    4. L’Artisan Parfumeur Passage d’Enfer
    5. Frédéric Malle Angéliques sous la pluie

If I’m selecting a scent purely for myself without having to consider situations or places, my favourites would be

    1. Chanel Misia
    2. Chanel Cuir de Russie
    3. Narciso (the white one)
    4. Guerlain Insolence
    5. Diorella
    6. Guerlain Vol de Nuit January 20, 2016 at 9:41am Reply

    • bregje: Wow! I could copy your first scenario list completely 🙂 January 21, 2016 at 7:39pm Reply

    • Notturno7: I am like Bregje but I’d copy your last list and of Diorella and Narciso ( I have to try N) I’d put No 5 and No 19. It’s so hard to narrow things down to just 5. I love that you did 3 lists January 25, 2016 at 3:52am Reply

      • Angeline: You HAVE to try – Narciso is fantastic !! I don’t feel i can live up to N° 5 – it’s a very “well dressed” perfume and i’m not usually well dressed enough 😀 January 25, 2016 at 5:50am Reply

        • Karen (A): Oh it goes quite well with a tee shirt and sweat (or yoga) pants, No fancy dress required! January 25, 2016 at 6:00am Reply

        • Notturno7: Thanks Angeline! Now I have to go to the store and sample it! Lol. I smelled it in the magazine add once only and it caught my attention. January 26, 2016 at 4:18am Reply

  • OperaFan: The #1 is a no-brainer for me. The rest I needed to think about, 2/3/4 are in no particular order and may be season-dependent:
    1. Jicky (mid-late 90s edt)
    2. AG Gardenia Passion (purchased 2002)
    3. Apres l’Ondee (edt also mid-late 90s edt)
    4. AG Eau d’Hadrien (pre-2000)
    5. Too many possibilities…. among classic Guerlains (Chamade, Mitsy, Liu…), Chanel (No 5, Cuir de Russie, Cristalle), other early (pre-2000) AG

        • Notturno7: Me too, OperaFan. I used to carry quite a few bottles with me in the car (just in case) and me and my friends used to laugh about it. It looked like a had a little portable parfumerie. But now I stopped (it’s not good in warm weather) and do the same as you! January 26, 2016 at 4:11am Reply

  • Anka: Hi Hamamelis, nice question!

If I don’t know what to wear, what doesn’t happen very often, I think my top five are at the moment the following:
    1. Mohur 2. Misia 3. Violettes du Czar 4. Santal Massoia 5. Après L’Ondée.
So, that means, if I am uncertain, I will reach for rather transparent, subtle scents.
From your list I absolutely love Heure Exquise but since I only own a sample (have to change that!), it doesn’t count. To me it’s less fancy than No 19 but more interesting than Hiris. January 20, 2016 at 10:39am Reply

    • Hamamelis: Hi Anka, your Violettes du Czar seems a sure candiate for sampling, I really like violet, in Misia, but also in Iris Cendré where it sort of pops up after a while. And yes Heure Exquise is full bottle worthy if you ask me… January 20, 2016 at 10:56am Reply

    Chanel Beige (spring/summer)
    L’Artisan Fleur D’Oranger
    Tom Ford Cafe Rose (fall/winter)

As a sidebar…I recently tried a spray of Del Rae Coup de Foudre and thought it very nice. Might have to get a sample to try. January 20, 2016 at 11:09am Reply

  • Phyllis Iervello: The five perfumes I reach for when I am in a hurry or don’t know what to wear are:

    Chanel Misia
    Chanel No. 19 Poudre
    Neela Vermiere Ashoka
Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille January 20, 2016 at 11:09am Reply

    Chanel Jersey
    Heeley Iris de Nuit
    Chanel 1932
Acqua di Parma Rosa Nobile January 20, 2016 at 11:18am Reply

  • Lilly: When I can’t decide what to wear and just want something understated and elegant, I usually reach for Aprés l’Ondée in the spring summer and autumn, and Coromandel in the winter. January 20, 2016 at 11:18am Reply

  • Brainfodder: 1. Chanel’s 31 Rue Cambon
    2. Diptyque’s Philosykos
    3. Guerlain Eau de Cologne Imperiale
    4. FM’s L’eau d’Hiver
    5. OJ’s Frangipani (just)

I can wear 1-4 of the above without a blink of the eye, whenever, wherever, and with whomever. Most of the Chanels (Exclusifs) work incredibly well with my skin – they smell so uniquely delicious and abstract – cue lots of compulsive wrist sniffing as they develop… it’s just the small matter of finances that keeps me from listing more!

OJ Fangipani is joyful, but it definitely projects a little further than the others. I include it as my easiest-to-wear white floral.

Bois des Iles, L’Air du Desert Marocain, Trayee, Oeillet Bengale and Iris Poudre are faves, but I have to think a little more carefully before applying. The same with OJ Woman – its projection on me is sooo very good! January 20, 2016 at 11:24am Reply

    • Jackie: The Chanel Exclusifs do seem to lend themselves well to this category, at least for me. I didn’t put them on my list simply because I don’t (yet) own any. When my ship comes in: 28 La Pausa, Cuir de Russie, Bois des Iles, Coromandel, Sycomore, and Misia.

        • limegreen: Versatile is what you make of it, AndreaR!
I love TC but don’t consider it versatile in my world. We should have another list –perfumes we sneak around and wear, so to avoid blasting out other people. I spray TC on early when I’m alone so by the time I’m around people, including the husband, it will have passed the menthol opening. I love the menthol opening, but it’s not a shared opinion. 🙂 January 20, 2016 at 8:13pm Reply

          • AndreaR: Rats! Back to earth with a thud. I conveniently forgot the versatility aspect 🙂 I too love the menthol opening. I don’t spray much and happily sniff my wrist throughout the day. January 20, 2016 at 8:49pm Reply

            • limegreen: I really should dab TC but then I don’t get to enjoy it as much and let’s face it, Andrea, it’s all about us and our noses! 🙂

    4. Caleche
    5. Femme

In addition, someone gave me a bottle of Toujours Moi yesterday – and I’m loving it. I know it’s an inexpensive fragrance, and I don’t want to be a perfume snob – there are plenty of less-expensive fragrances that are lovely – does anyone else have a fragrance they love to wear that’s super-inexpensive? • Brainfodder: 4711 – a smile in a bottle 🙂 so fresh and reviving January 20, 2016 at 12:16pm Reply

    • Karen (A): Roberto Cavalli’s Oro $11 (plus shipping, a whopping $16 total). A wonderful, warm, golden Amber that price wise smells like its missing a decimal point. January 20, 2016 at 4:52pm Reply

    • Ann: Already mentioned–but Encre Noir (Homme) to me smells elegant and sophisticated, and cozy! And it can still be purchased for a song. January 22, 2016 at 11:29am Reply

  • LaDomna: I’m not really very good at versatile. Or rather, what I consider versatile, wearable etc, is rather different from the norm. Elegant scents for instance aren’t very versatile for me. The least versatile scent in my full bottle wardrobe is Slumberhouse Grev, simply because it is the most elegant scent I own. No Guerlains will make my list either, for the same reason… they are too elegant and restrained to be truly versatile for me. Furthermore it’s just not a goal of my wardrobe to have it full of easy to wear scents, just not my thing…

But still, a poll is a poll, and here are my top 5 scents that work [for me] in any situation / weather / season / mood… In no particular order.

    – Carner Barcelona El Born
    – Slumberhouse Ore
    – Annick Goutal Sables
    – Xerjoff Mamluk
    – BPAL Snake Oil January 20, 2016 at 12:17pm Reply

    • Victoria: Don’t worry about it, the idea is the most versatile perfume. Elegant or not is secondary. January 20, 2016 at 12:24pm Reply

    • Old Herbaceous: I have a sample of El Born on the way; can’t wait to try it! January 20, 2016 at 10:13pm Reply

  • Raquel: Angel, Shalimar, Shalimar Parfum Inititiale, La Vie este belle and Kalemat January 20, 2016 at 12:28pm Reply

  • Gabrielle Langley: I am enjoying all these posts and am making notes on some new fragrances to try!

    My List:
    1. Bottega Veneta
    — Signature fragrance, especially lovely for fall and winter
    2. Misia (Chanel)
    — winter to spring
    3. Eau Premiere (Chanel)
    — spring and summer
    4. Mariela Burani (Original)
    — Sadly discontinued. However, I include it because it was appropriate anywhere, any time and in all seasons. Very soft yet complex with a delicate but distinct sillage. I recently bought Misia because it reminded me of Mariella Burani’s elegant dry powdery character blended with wet flower notes. January 20, 2016 at 12:30pm Reply

    2. Guerlain Shalimar Parfum Initial L’Eau
    3. Chanel 31 Rue Cambon
    4. Guerlain Jicky (elegant and comforting)

  • Gretchen: Like Brainfodder, OJ Woman, Trayee, and Bois des Iles are favorites that I wear a lot, but I’m not sure they’re “versatile”. Bois des Iles would be overwhelming in the summer, and Woman sometimes brings out a facet that I worry might bother others. My “no thinking needed” scents include Arpege, Forest Walk, Encre Noire for men, and Perles de Mousse. January 20, 2016 at 1:36pm Reply

  • Irina: Chanel Bois des Iles EDT! On me, it’s very light on sillage but sticks around forever in any weather.

  • Jackie: LOVE reading people’s default frags. Making a list!

    1. I second Noele’s SL Daim Blond above. The first time I wore it was to a movie; now I can’t go to a movie without it. Also my bedtime scent (more evening than daytime for me).

    2. Le Labo Vetiver 46! Worn every single day and night since I bought it a couple of months ago. Complex, interesting, and (for me) versatile. Can’t get enough of it!

    3. Tocca Cleopatra. An under-appreciated scent, IMO. To my nose, it’s at once both crispy/fresh and warm/creamy/musky.

    4. When all else fails, Chanel 19. 🙂 January 20, 2016 at 1:45pm Reply

    • Hamamelis: Ha, when all else fails, Chanel 19…! Very funny and true. Now that is a versatile in my book. January 20, 2016 at 1:59pm Reply

      • Jackie: 🙂 Agreed!

As I once said to Victoria, to me 19 smells like the Platonic ideal of “perfume.”

Which probably has more to do with the fact that it was my first grownup perfume than with any inherent quality. January 20, 2016 at 2:11pm Reply

    2. Jour Hermes – summer/daytime
    3. I mostly look for a character in perfumes, but recently I found a perfume I would buy because of its universality, so my third vote goes to L’Eau Kenzo Intense Pour Femme (2015)
    4. Dia Woman Amouage – don’t have it in perfum, but in body lotion, smell is very soft and feminine

  • Karen (A): Too fun! And a challenge, since I get enamourmed with a fragrance easily and wear wear wear it, then find another to adore. But, most versitile for me – Chanel 5 pure parfum (because it’s perfect), Chamade (just wear it and it feels so right – I have EdT and am so anxious to try the pure Parfum), La Fille de Berlin (a beautiful rose and although Portrait of a Lady is perfect in the fall, I do think a bit before applying), Jo Mallone’s Velvet Rose and Oud (near and dear to me).

Fifth place is a tie depending on season Dries Van Noten for fall, Carnal Flower in late spring/summer, and Coco parfum for winter. Any of these three are easy choices in their season, but I’d think a bit any other time.

This is such a great post and honestly, beyond always reaching for #5 when I can’t think of what to wear, a great way to think more about my perfumes. January 20, 2016 at 4:43pm Reply

    • SilverMoon: Hi Karen, my fellow rose perfume fan!
As you will notice above, I avoided listing any of the roses, since I wanted to think about other versatile ones. Roses are always on the cards for me – Une Rose, Paestum Rose, Velvet Rose and Oud (i knew you would list this last one when you would add your comment!). And l also considered adding Carnal Flower and Flowerhead, but knew I had to limit my list 🙂

i have noticed you now post under Karen (A). January 20, 2016 at 4:54pm Reply

      • Karen (A): Hi Silvermoon! Another Karen posted a while ago, so I just thought it was easier to add my last name initial to differentiate. Should have come up with a good nickname like you, Limegreen, Angeldiva and others!

Carnal Flower, sigh – sultry summer nights in a bottle.

Since there are times when nothing but a rose perfume will do – and only on rare occaisions when one doesn’t feel right, I knew at least one had to be included! It was funny though, because I tried to think of what I’d wear no matter the season. Rose Nacree du Désert which is so exquisite hasn’t quite felt right in the cold, whereas Nahema does. Velvet Rose is just so near and dear to my heart I couldn’t leave it off as it always works for me. January 20, 2016 at 7:37pm Reply

      • Karen (A): On another post, I noticed you had listed some of my favorites, too! #5 is really a love or hate fragrance – on Victoria’s article on fragrances that didn’t work for people (or what we were “supposed” to like, but No thank you!), #5 may have been the leader. I will say that the pure parfum is much much quieter and wears very close, but for its iconic status many people just are not fans. January 21, 2016 at 8:07am Reply

At the moment I’m crazy for Hermes’ Moinseur Li and always have to have the Bulgari green tea. January 20, 2016 at 7:44pm Reply

  • Surbhi: Didn’t read it properly in the morning. we were doing top 5. So here I go again.

    1) Eau de Magnolia (anywhere)
    2) Musc ravageur (Cold / winter / foggy/ tired/ bad mood/ Anxiety/ Extra happy)
    3) Jasmine and or Sandalwood Oil(when I Am at home by myself.

I have got enough complements on Le Fille De Berlin but the description of it makes me feel like it date only / evening only fragrance. OR I Would wear it more often.

I also don’t know how people react to oud / wood / scents. A year or so ago I didn’t know much and associated it to bad. But now I see myself grabbing lelabo oud 27 bottle a lot. Even if I tried a sample of bad perfume on me. I cover it up with oud 27. January 20, 2016 at 7:47pm Reply

              • hajusuuri: It is tagged as Limited Edition and it would be a sad day in perfumeland if it was discontinued. I actually got mine in 1Q2015 so my bottle is not quite 1 year old but I’ve worn it regularly, as you know 😉 January 23, 2016 at 10:01pm Reply

                • Petunia: Agreed. Have you tried the Extrait? Almost bought a few mls at the sale but held back because I couldn’t remember how they compare. I am most familiar with the EDT. January 24, 2016 at 10:02am Reply

  • Aurora: It’s a good question Hamamelis and so glad you feel better, and many thanks in advance for the compilation, Victoria.
For me as for many others it can change with seasons but at the moment it is in no particular order:
Shalimar EDC when I want Shalimar but feels the others would be too much
Noa L’Eau when I want fruity but elegant
Kenzo Madly when I want woody incense but think Encens Flamboyant would be too demanding
Shalimar PI l’Eau because it wakes me up on difficult mornings
Yardley Iris for layering January 20, 2016 at 9:35pm Reply

    • Victoria: Yes, thanks to Hamamelis for this terrific idea! I’m enjoying reading the comments and lists so much. January 21, 2016 at 7:45am Reply

  • Alicia: This is very difficult since I change my perfumes with the seasons. In the Spring I wear a lot Guerlain Chamade, in summer Bulgari, Eau Perfumee au The Vert, Chanel Cristalle and Guerlain Pamplelune, but then I retire them until the next summer. The same happens with Fall and Winter fragrances. Nevertheless I notice that I never seem to retire Arpege, Infusion d’iris, Guerlain Vetiver, Miss Dior Original, Chanel #5, but I don’t know if that is due to their versatility or more likely because through the years they have become my intimate friends. Victoria, today I received Ostara. It is indeed very lovely, and every Spring I will thank you for it. January 20, 2016 at 9:47pm Reply

      • Karen (A): Will just post his here and not on the Ostara review page – everything about this fragrance is just so lovely! The box is exquisite as is the bottle. And while I “know” packaging shouldn’t matter (would love the fragrance is a plain old bottle), having such a pretty box on my vanity and opening it up to a bottle with a perfect little ribbon bow makes applying some such a wonderful experience. • Karen (A): To me it’s a very easy scent. Had Victoria not reviewed it and given it a 5 star rating and if the price was not so good, I know I would not have done a blind buy. To me, it is not my usual type (rich, lush) – so it’s a fun expansion for my perfume vocabulary and taste. January 21, 2016 at 4:04pm Reply

            • Notturno7: Me too. It was a blind purchase and I’ve been wearing it every day this week, which is pretty rare for me. I think anything cologne-like is my ‘go to’ fragrance. D&G Sicily was another one I would put in this category, but sadly discontinued. Such a great fragrance, day or night, summer or winter. January 21, 2016 at 4:48am Reply

    • Jackie: Great to see yours on here, Victoria. I was just about to ask! 🙂

How would you distinguish a “dry” woods from other woods and what would be the other side of the spectrum (moist? damp? oily? creamy?).

I love woods but would like to expand my vocabulary/perception around it. For example, I love Feminité du Bois. I assume that would not be considered “dry” with those fruity and spicy notes. (?) To me, it could be described as “creamy.”

Are you familiar with Le Labo’s Vetiver 46? (vetiver definitely not the standout note for me!). To me, its woodiness is smoky (dry?) but it’s very incensey (frankincense) and in a way almost “oily” or “resin-y.” Would you call that balanced between dry and … oily?

Or maybe “damp” refers to more green woods?….

Hope you don’t mind me asking. January 21, 2016 at 4:39pm Reply

  • Tourmaline: Hello Victoria and Fellow Perfume Lovers,

These days I would class only two of the following fragrances as favourites (Oscar and Le Dix), but I have found all of them to be sufficiently versatile to wear during any season, at any time of day and for any occasion.

In the order in which I discovered them…

    1. Y (Yves Saint Laurent 1964). I raved on about this fragrance for Angeldiva back in 2014, so I won’t bore anyone again!

    2. Givenchy III (Givenchy 1970) – the original. Towards the end of 1980, when I was 19 and choosing my first signature scent, this one made the short list. In the end I chose Y, but I always intended to buy a bottle of Givenchy III one day. Finally, last year, I acquired a small bottle of the original EDT, and now I wish that I’d bought a couple of large bottles of it years ago, when it was still available in the shops. It is so very cool and elegant.

    3. Oscar (Oscar de la Renta 1977) – the divine original. On account of the fact that in 1985 I chose this as my next signature scent but then quickly branched out and developed a fragrance wardrobe, I have plenty of it left in my fridge. It is from the late 1980s but it still smells wonderful.

    4. Tea Rose (Perfumer’s Workshop 1972) – just one, inexpensive squirt.

    5. Le Dix (Balenciaga 1947). I remember first spraying this fragrance onto my wrist in the old David Jones department store in Brisbane back in 1990, and then going to the cinema to see “The Witches” (which featured Angelica Huston, as The Grand High Witch, wearing stunning black and violet couture with amethyst jewellery). During the film I kept sniffing my wrist and enjoying the elegant, violet-tinged scent, and afterwards I went back to the store and ordered a bottle. Sadly, the fragrance has long been discontinued, but I have enough of the 1990s EDT to last me for many years.

I have never particularly liked No. 5; however I have yet to try many of the other fragrances that people have listed, especially the more recent releases. I look forward to doing so in the future, and no doubt I’ll find one or two new staples. January 21, 2016 at 12:40pm Reply

    • Cornelia Blimber: Angelica Huston was a super elegant witch. Do you remember that handbag? and the bottle of ”Diva”? January 21, 2016 at 2:55pm Reply

      • Tourmaline: Hi Cornelia,

Indeed, I find it hard to imagine a more elegant witch than Angelica. Yes, I do remember the bottle of “Diva”; I counted at least five bottles of perfume on the witch’s dressing table, including that one and what might have been a bottle of Bal à Versailles. There was also a large, Penhaligon’s-style bottle with a label that said, “Love-Drops: Exquisite Family Confection for Fireside Use by William Goodheart, Chemist”!

I remember that the boy’s grandmother had a lovely tapestry handbag, and that among the contents was a small, cylindrical, six-sided bottle of perfume. I’d love to know what that was, too! January 22, 2016 at 6:11am Reply

        • Cornelia Blimber: You have a perfect memory, Tourmaline! Now i want to see that film again! January 22, 2016 at 6:35am Reply

          • Tourmaline: Oh, Cornelia, I don’t think it’s a good memory so much as the fact that I’ve seen the film many times over the years! Like you, I now want to see it again! January 23, 2016 at 2:28am Reply

        • kpaint: You’ve convinced me I need to see this (I missed it when it came out.) It really doesn’t get more elegant than Anjelica Houston, does it? Smart, classy and chic. January 23, 2016 at 7:38pm Reply

          • Tourmaline: Hi Kpaint,

Yes, her performance in the film is brilliant and her outfits are superb. If you can tolerate a lot of scenes featuring mice, then your patience will be rewarded; the story has some very effective contrast! I hope that you enjoy it. January 23, 2016 at 9:52pm Reply

      • Tourmaline: Hi Hildegerd,

I don’t blame you; I am fortunate indeed. I feel sorry for those people who never had the opportunity to smell the original. I remember falling in love with it and being very excited when I first bought it – almost as excited as when I first bought supreme favourites such as L’Heure Bleue, Mitsouko and Shalimar (none of which I would regard as versatile, although L’Heure Bleue comes close, and of course another Guerlain fragrance, Après L’Ondée, hits the bullseye and would come further down my list).

Some people perceived the original Oscar as a “big” or heavy fragrance, but to my nose it was simultaneously ravishing and understated, with a slightly powdery/smoky quality that ensured that it was never cloying. Michael Edwards classified it as a floral oriental (like L’Heure Bleue and Après L’Ondée) with major notes of orange flower, soft aldehydes, jasmine, tuberose, musk and myrrh; what’s not to like?! • Kris: Oooh! I love this poll. So nice to see what everyone’s go-to fragrances are! Here are my top 5:

    1. Chanel No. 22–probably the closest I come to a signature scent. It is always perfect.

    2. Guerlain Vol de Nuit–green enough to be refreshing, warm enough to be cozy.

    3. Chanel Les Exclusifs 31 Rue Cambon–because there’s never a bad time to smell like a beautiful old library. I wish they would release this as an extrait.

    4. Keiko Macheri Tarifa–the petit grain and neroli are a bright pick-me-up in the winter and refreshing in the summer

    5. Tom Ford Violet Blonde–violet, iris, and sandalwood are just pretty all the time. January 21, 2016 at 1:23pm Reply

    2)Apres L’Ondee by Guerlain
3)Otis and Me by Parfums Jazmin Sarai
    4)Tonka Imperiale by Guerlain
    5) Lavender Noir by Phoenix Botanicals January 21, 2016 at 2:27pm Reply

  • Penny: I can wear Chanel Sycamore almost any time, any place. I also prefer No. 22 over No. 5 for me. Recently, I have also been reaching for No. 28 La Pausa often. January 21, 2016 at 2:36pm Reply

  • KimB: The #1 and #2 popped into my head immediately, the rest I had to think about
    Chanel:
    1) No 5 extrait – one spritz every morning on my arms and I’m set for the day (there’s a reason it’s still a huge seller!)
    2) 31 Rue Cambon – my go-to for evening / weekends
    3) extrait of Cuir de Russie, Bois des Iles, or No 19 depending on the season/weather

    Hermes: (especially in summer)
    4) Jour d’Hermes absolu
    5) Jardin en Mediterranee January 21, 2016 at 2:50pm Reply

    • Notturno7: I love your selection KimB. I love and use all the Chanel’s you mention. I’d only substitute your Hermes for 22 Faubourg.
What great lists from everyone. I feel inspired to try new ones! February 9, 2016 at 5:03am Reply

  • Vani: I think my choices work well in every season, I consider them all very comfortable to wear and they make me happy:
#1 – Chanel no. 5 Eau Premiere or no.5 EDT
    #2 Prada Candy
    #3 Van Cleef Arpels First
    #4 Rochas Femme
Seems like I may be a gourmand & aldehydes kind of girl 🙂 January 21, 2016 at 3:52pm Reply

    • Michaela: I’m so sorry I forgot First. It’s perfect on cold days as well as in the heat; a small dab or a full spray, depending on the sillage intended, would behave perfectly well in any situation, day or night. Easy to wear and elegant all the time. January 22, 2016 at 3:44am Reply

      • Notturno7: I love First, too. It’s in my group of fragrances to wear on the days when I have to much work and it makes me feel strong, tough and in command. January 25, 2016 at 4:07am Reply

  • Tati: What a fun list! My favorites for versatility:
    Une Fleur de Cassie
    Coromandel
    Iris Nazarena
    Dzongkha
La Fille De Berlin January 21, 2016 at 4:10pm Reply

    • Karen (A): It’s fascinating how often Une Fleur de Cassie is listed! It’s a favorite of mine, but for me more of a special occaision perfume, perhaps I will wear it as my daily perfume for a week and see what happens! January 22, 2016 at 6:54am Reply

      • Tati: I definitely love to wear it going out to lunch with friends or whenever I want to feel special. The cost point prevents me from wearing it around the house everyday, but I’ve started to substitute JM’s Cardamom & Mimosa for that. Not as complex but not a bad replacement either! • laraffinee: The one perfume that I reach for the most is:

    Hermes, 24 Faubourg

-always is wonderful, all occasions all year; a real winner.

I used to be a Guerlain girl, until they reformulated my favorites and they are no longer recognizable. So disappointing.

Chanel has a lot of classics I love: Gardenia, Cuir de Russie; No. 19; No. 5; 1932….

Recently discovered Tauer perfumes and find myself reaching for Incense Rosé -it is giving 24 Faubourg some good competition.

I have a wonderful bottle of Esteé Lauder’s Beyond Paradise in perfume concentrate which I love and would wear much more if it were still available – it has a richness that the Eau de Parfume does not. I wish they would make the perfume concentrate available again.

As a perfume collector, I have so many for so many moods, seasons, etc. but these are the top ones. January 21, 2016 at 4:28pm Reply

    • Notturno7: I love 22 Faubourg and all other Chanel’s, except Beige that you mentioned. For me too, 22 Faubourg feels perfect for all seasons and I have it in extract, EdP and the body cream is so luxurious and yummy ?. Now I feel like putting a little dab on before falling asleep ? January 25, 2016 at 4:15am Reply

    • Notturno7: And Laraffinee, that Beyond Paradise in pure perfume does sound beyond paradise!! Divine. Why do they discontinue the best stuff? January 25, 2016 at 4:19am Reply

  • Samar Rizwan: Amouge Honour, Roses de chloe, VS bombshell, Nirvana white, EL tuberose gardenia. January 21, 2016 at 5:20pm Reply

  • bregje: I wish i was more original but i guess all bois de jasmin-readers have great taste,so most of my anytime, anywhere scents have already been mentioned 😉

    Après l’ondée
    Baiser Vole
    Jour d’hermes
    Stella
    La fille de Berlin
    Knot
Guerlain Vetiver January 21, 2016 at 7:47pm Reply

  • Mer: Undecided, no commitment (because sadly it lasts 15 minutes on me): Un matin d’orage. Otherwise, some old Miss Dior or BPAL Odin. Or else I steal Old Spice 😉

I’d certainly be Magie Noire but I treasure two tiny vintage bottles, or Timbuktu if it hadn’t been reformulated into nothingness :'( January 22, 2016 at 2:57am Reply

    • Mer: I’ll add, I think I should start treasuring the Miss Dior also, and I’ve found a substitute I can still find in Scherrer. It has a similar character to me. Galbanum is my thing. January 22, 2016 at 3:08am Reply

  • Therése: It’s obvious to me from reading through all these comments that I really should try Chanel no 5 Eau de Premiere 🙂

I’ve never bothered with the no 5 flankers because no 5 smells really odd on me. Maybe Eau de Premiere is the answer. January 22, 2016 at 4:24am Reply

  • Tippie: I would most readily reach for:
    – Serge Lutens Feminite du Bois
    – Guerlain Mitsouko
    – Frederic Malle Parfum de Therese
    – Parfums de Nicolai New York
    – MDCI Chypre Palatin
I think these five would work in any situation and time of day and weather. January 22, 2016 at 6:13am Reply

  • Parley: most easy-to-wear:

    guerlain vetiver
    eau de rochas
    penhaligon elixir
    hermes voyage

My safe bets seem resolutely unisex and streamlined even though I’d classify myself as primarily a big ol chypre lover! January 22, 2016 at 6:46am Reply

  • london: Versatile meaning any weather anywhere would probably be

    Hermes Hiris
    Guerlain Liu
    Dior Dune
    Hermes Eau des Merveilles
    Prada L’Eau Ambree

It’s easier to wear light in Winter than it is to wear heavy in Summer! January 22, 2016 at 7:23am Reply

  • Indigo: I understand the abstract idea that something versatile would be discreet, chic and passe-partout but for me, I can get bored with scents like these and end up spraying something else on as soon as it fades. So for me, the most versatile are the ones I want to wear all day and into the night (aka the most beautiful).
    1. Portrait of a Lady
    2. Feminité du Bois
    3. Après l’Ondée January 22, 2016 at 9:53am Reply

    • Victoria: Just to clarify–not at all! It’s whatever feels versatile to you. Bland doesn’t equal versatile. January 24, 2016 at 7:45am Reply

      • Indigo: Well, there isn’t a pastel colour to be found in my wardrobe or makeup bag so yes – a versatile perfume needs a certain character for me. You’re right – it’s what works for the individual (and for me, right now, that’s a scarlet top, black jeans and POAL). January 26, 2016 at 4:50pm Reply

        • Surbhi: Interesting ! Being able to pull of POAL as versatile fragrance. January 27, 2016 at 1:07pm Reply

          • Indigo: Absolutely! I read an interview with Luca Turin recently where he described it (and Ropion’s work) as putting together big ingredients which cancel one another out by their size, rather than combining to create a monster. It can feel big but it is also cool enough to be quite translucent. January 27, 2016 at 4:35pm Reply

  • Nina Z: Après l’Ondée
    Ylang & Vanille
    Sideris by Maria Candida Gentile

    I might add more later…. January 22, 2016 at 10:45am Reply

  • Johanob: My no-brainer versatile current-heatwave scents are(in no particular order!):
1.)Chanel Pour Monsieur-I was surprised how much I enjoyed it in this heat!It went from like to LOVE.
2.)Etat Libre d’Orange Antiheros-in my books the best burnt-sugar but fresh lavender perfume out there!
3.)Serge Lutens Fleurs d’Oranger-a staple this summer,I drained my bottle!!
4.)Rose en Bos Imithi.a local South African botanical perfumery brand.Imithi is forest floors and damp, wet earth after the rains. The smokiness reminds me of campfires on a summer night.
5.)The Body Shop White Musk Smoky Rose.Such an easy perfume to wear, and it reminds me a lot of Rose Jam showergel.Perfect with a no-brainer jeans and t-shirt outfit as well!
Loving the lists!Off to revisit a neglected dear old friend:No.19….;-)) January 22, 2016 at 5:37pm Reply

  • Malmaison: I have a shortlist of perfumes I go for if I’m headed to the office and need to be discreet with my fragrance; or if I simply don’t know what perfume to put on and have to decide in a hurry; or if I just want something I know I won’t regret an hour later.

    Gypsy Water, Byredo
    Cuir de Lancôme
    Eau des Merveilles, Hermès
    Bottega Veneta
Parfum Trouvé, Miller et Bertaux – although this is very similar to Feminité du Bois, and FDB is arguably the better perfume, I find Parfum Trouvé softer and more wearable, at least for me.

I am interested to see how much love the Chanels get, it’s one perfume line that I’ve never managed to find anything to tempt me in – but I keep trying because I feel that Chanel is a lock to which I’ve not yet found the right key. January 22, 2016 at 7:06pm Reply

  • Jo: These are the ones I tend to reach for when I have no particular mood or preference to fulfil with my choice, the ones which feel easy-going and familiar.

    2. Miller Harris La Fumee/ Diptyque Tam Dao
    3. Chanel No. 5 Elixir Sensuel
    4. Lubin Black Jade
    5. Burberry Brit Rhythm

These are my go-to, versatile fragrances:
Chanel Rue Cambon; Sarah Jessica Parker’s Lovely; and Penhaligon`s No. 33 Eau de Cologne. The latter is “for men” but I love the notes and how it makes me feel~ January 23, 2016 at 10:26am Reply

    Angel extract
    Cuir de Russie
    Bois des Iles

  • Kaat: Lovely Idea,

the ones i wear all year round, and when i can’t decide,

    1 Castelajac
    2 Oppoponax–Les Nereides
    3 Guerlain Apres L’ondee

    5) Serge Lutens A La Nuit

But really Chanel 28 La Pausa just makes everything better. Sigh…. January 26, 2016 at 7:04pm Reply

    • Notturno7: Reading everyone’s lists -Après L’Ondee is very popular. It like it but it feels too light on me. Wish they start making a perfume again. You guys are inspiring me to go to the store and give it another try ? February 9, 2016 at 5:18am Reply

    1. Narciso.
    2. Nahema.
    3. Neroli (Yves Rocher).

And sometimes when I want something “else”, Une fleur de Cassie or OJ’s Tolu. January 27, 2016 at 7:08am Reply

  • Lady Dragon: For me, definitely Chanel classics: Eau Premiere, Cristalle Edt and Cristalle Eau Verte, Coco, 31 Rue Cambon; and some random choices – from Hermes Eau D’Orange Verte, Balmain de Balmain to Lady Vengeance by JHAG January 28, 2016 at 11:03am Reply

  • kayliz: Better late than never, I hope…

    — Chanel: Misia
    — Guerlain: Cuir Beluga
    — Annick Goutal: Mandragore Pourpre

Am wondering about La Fille de Berlin — I can’t remember whether it works that way for me in summer. In winter it’s definitely an easy, happy choice.

Oh and after months of complaining that I don’t get Mohur, I think I may be hooked. Early days yet but I’m probably going to have to mortgage something sooner or later. January 31, 2016 at 3:14pm Reply

    • Katherine x: Funny – I had a similar experience with Mohur. Neutral and then BAM! Heartachingly smitten. Similarly with La Fille de Berlin and Bois de Violette where my initial reaction was rather negative not just neutral, then I was swept off my feet. No telling… February 9, 2016 at 10:03pm Reply

  • Kara: My hand reaches for the following and in order:
    -Reem Acra
    -Bottega Veneta(original)
    -Donna Karan Gold
    -Flower by Kenzo
-Dune by Dior February 1, 2016 at 12:15pm Reply

    • Maja Wiggins: I am quite nostalgic toward Dune by Dior, same goes for Poeme by Lancôme and Dolce Vita by Dior. February 13, 2016 at 10:58pm Reply

  • Maja Wiggins: Anything Hermes, Declaration Cartier, Quartz Molyneux, Womanity Muglar, Diva Ungaro.
I lived in Middle East for quite some time, so Oud based oils are part of my perfume wardrobe. I quite enjoyed Chanle 19 poudre and Cartier La Panthere and Le Baiser Vole. My love for Hermes has been ” helped ” by living in very hot and humid climate. Moving back to South Texas – climate is almost the same. Last Christmas I was gifted Reveal by Clavin Klein and enjoyed it as applied on bare body. February 13, 2016 at 10:55pm Reply

  • Jo: Having seen the results of the poll now, I can agree, for my own answer Chanel comes out top as well. I’d say
    1. Chanel No. 5 Elixir Sensuel
    2. Chanel Bois de Iles
    3. Chanel No. 5 EDP
    4. Diptyque Tam Dao
    5. Yves Rocher Neroli

I would also have said Jean Charles Brosseau Ombre Rose but I have finished my (vintage) bottle and have not yet tried the new formulation. March 16, 2016 at 2:52pm Reply

    • Victoria: Thank you for your list, Jo!
I don’t mind the new formulation of Ombre Rose, but I worry that a side by side comparison with the vintage version may not be to its benefit. March 16, 2016 at 7:42pm Reply
