Perfume Decants and Samples Giveaway

In celebration of Memorial Day, one of our generous readers is hosting a giveaway. Monica has a selection of perfume decants and samples that she no longer needs and she would like to send it to someone who might like to sample more widely but is constrained by their circumstances. In the lot, there are 16 different samples of niche and prestige perfumes from houses like Chanel, Guerlain, L’Artisan, Naomi Goodsir, Malle, Givenchy and Paco Rabanne.

Monica doesn’t mind sending worldwide, but it goes without saying that we are not responsible for leaks or damage during transit or for lost packages.

To participate, please answer these questions. I will randomly draw one winner.

1. Please recommend your favorite perfume with rose notes to Monica. The only thing is that she wants “something spicy and incense-y.”
2. May I contact you via email to notify you of your win?

The contest is now closed. The winner is Kath. Congratulations! I will contact you via email.

  • rosarita: Hi! I don’t need to be entered in the drawing but I wanted to thank Monica for her contribution and offer a couple of spicy rose favorites. Andy Tauer Un Rose Chypree, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Inner Sanctum (she has a deft hand with rose, there are many worth exploring), Pasteum Rose, Nicolai Rose Oud. Have fun! May 26, 2017 at 7:47am

  • Lizbee: What a great idea, Monica. And so generous. I too have so many samples and decants that I never use. I love the idea of passing them on for others to play with and enjoy. That said, no need to enter me in the draw.

As for a rose, have you tried Tauer Perfumes PHI Une Rose de Kandahar? It’s sweet but also spicy and quite unusual to my nose. May 26, 2017 at 7:49am

  • Ben: What a fantastic offer! I feel like I’m naming the obvious choices here, but Frederic Malle’s Une Fleur de Cassie is a very rich, complex rose, and for an incensey rose my personal favourite is Eldo’s Rien (or Rien Intense Incense if you don’t mind the explosion). May 26, 2017 at 8:01am

  • Hobbes: This is a great opportunity! I have a limited budget and even samples add up in cost. Thank you Monica for this opportunity!

I’m not a big fan of rose personally, however there is one rose fragrance that really is unique. It is “Bitter Rose, Broken Spear” by D.S. & Durga. Their house makes many unique fragrances and this one is no exception. With notes like Rose, Amber, Pepper, Hot Iron, Embers, Thyme, and Nutmeg BRBS is bound to be the most unique rose fragrance you’ll have ever smelled. May 26, 2017 at 9:07am

    • Hobbes: Yes, I can be contacted via my email. May 28, 2017 at 9:50am

  • Lily: My favorite spicy roses are Caron Parfum Sacre and Agent Provocateur (original EDP). I don’t know that either has a pronounced incense note. Incense isn’t a note I have explore much yet.

The only incense with rose I can think of is Penhaligon’s Elixir (which it looks like they have recently discontinued? Not listed on the US site, anyway, but was still available around Christmas so might still be in stores); Elixir is very dry, pairs well with scotch. Has some spice, too.

Does Rose Anonyme (Atelier) have incense? I know it has oud. That one doesn’t read as spicy to me but it does have an interesting interplay of the Rose notes and the “deeper” dry notes of the oud and/or incense.

You may email me if my name is drawn. I have plenty of decants but have tried relatively few from any houses listed. 🙂 May 26, 2017 at 9:11am

  • Sandra: I recently fell in love without galop by Hermes, not a typical Rose fragrance but may fit the bill
I Live in the USA and you can contact me by email May 26, 2017 at 9:26am

  • spe: Portrait of a Lady by Malle and perhaps Marni. For some reason Amouage Lyric Man is also coming to mind. This is a very kind offer – thank you so much! I am fortunate to have many fragrance choices – please do not enter me. May 26, 2017 at 9:36am

  • JCW: How lovely of you, Monica! Guerrilla 2 by CDG & Noir Epices by F. Malle.

    Yes, you may contact me,
    Jennifer May 26, 2017 at 9:57am

  • Aida: Hi lovely Victoria
My favorite rose fragrances with a spicy kick to them are:
    Jo Malone, Red Roses
    Chloe, Roses de Chloe
    Atelier Cologne, Rose Anonyme
    And drum roll please…
My absolute favorite rose fragrance is Perfumista by Bond No 9
It is so exquisitely done that you can’t imagine…
My Persian mom is always teasing me when I wear rose fragrances…she says I smell like the rose water we use all the time for our pastries and other goodies.
But she doesn’t say that when I wear the above fragrances 🌹🌹🌹
    Much love May 26, 2017 at 10:34am

  • Sylvia C.: Greetings!

  • jean: Oh my goodness Monica! What an incredibly generous giveaway and I would love to enter! My favorite spicy rose is Amouage Lyric Woman! Rich, opulent, dark and mysterious is it one of the best rose perfumes ever! some of my other favorites:
    Sonoma Scent Studio Velvet Rose
Dame Perfumery Scottsdale Rose De Mai
    Jo Malone Red Roses
Les Parfums de Rosine Un Zeste de Rose
    Robert Piguet Rose Perfection . . .

I could go on and on! I was on a ‘rose quest’ and tried many to find the jewels! Thank you for giving us such a great opportunity to smell some new beauties! I’ll keep my fingers crossed! May 26, 2017 at 10:57am

    • jean: Yes email would be great! May 26, 2017 at 10:57am

  • Brittany: Thank you Monica!
    1) I love your question. I wholeheartedly recommend Aerin Evening Rose. It’s the perfect blend of floral and spice and is one of the few perfumes that is long lasting in my skin and the first floral I’ve been able to wear. I believe Victoria reviewed the Aerin Collection which is how I was introduced to the scent.
    2) Yes you may contact me through email. May 26, 2017 at 11:03am

  • Mary: What a lovely idea! Thank you Monica. I am not very experienced. That is why I so enjoy this blog. There is so much to learn. I know my recommendation may seem trite but I still enjoy Miss Dior. May 26, 2017 at 11:20am

  • Gigi: Thank you Monica and Victoria.
I’m beginning an exploration of rose fragrances and happened upon Amouage Lyric Woman and found it to be a wonderful blend of warmth, roses & spice.
Yes, you may contact me by email.
    Cheers! May 26, 2017 at 11:37am

  • Theresa: Thank you, Monica, for the excitement of a drawing!

For a spicy rose, I like very much several of Andy Tauer’s offerings: Une Rose Chypree or Incense Rose. For a jammy rose, try Rose Vermeille. They are all quite distinctive!

yes, you may contact me by email.
thanks again, Theresa May 26, 2017 at 12:26pm

  • Ellen M.: I actually don’t wear many rose perfumes, but Une Rose Chypree by Andy Tauer comes to mind for a spicy rose fragrance. Thank you so much for your generosity Monica. You may contact me by email. May 26, 2017 at 12:48pm

  • Mridula Koshy: Thank you for the chance Victoria and Monica. Rose is among my most favourite notes in perfume. Others have already mentioned the hard hitters on my list – Andy Tauer’s Rose Chypre and Andy Tauer’s Incense Rose are equally important to me, as is Malle’s Portrait of a Lady. And yes to being contacted by email. May 26, 2017 at 1:30pm

  • Cecilia: What a generous giveaway. I have sampled Rose Chypre by Andy Tauer. It’s a spicy rose scent- very pretty. Please enter me in this draw and feel free to contact me by email. Thanks! May 26, 2017 at 2:23pm

  • Kate Farrar: I only discovered this fragrance this week, but I’m in love with Portrait of a Lady by Frederick Malle. It’s my new favourite and the best rose fragrance I’ve ever tried so far. Yes, please do contact me by email. Thank you! May 26, 2017 at 2:31pm

  • jeanne: Rose 31 by Le Labo is an obvious, though sublime choice, in my opinion. Strange Invisible Perfume Black Rosette would be my second recommendation.

Yes, email me if selected, and thank you for the offer. May 26, 2017 at 2:36pm

  • Sands: https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Coty/La-Rose-Jacqueminot-7525.html

The notes are contested, but several mention incense which I think I also detect. There is also tobacco…it is definitely spicy. Have enjoyed reading the reviews on Fragrantica. My bottle is from the 1980’s bought on Ebay. To me it smells like a spicy deep red rose dipped (as several say on Fragrantica) in honey or at least mixed with beeswax. It’s very, very pretty in my opinion. And interesting too. Yes to being contacted by email. I can never resist a draw 🙂 Good luck and fragrant pleasure in your search! May 26, 2017 at 2:38pm

  • Marianna: Thank you for the giveaway.
I am in the US and you can share my email
    Rose recommendations:

What a generous giveaway. Please do not enter me, as I have wayyyy too much as it is, but I’d like to add my favorites to the spicy-rose suggestions.
If you can find it, Amouage Homage (rose and frankincense), L’Arte de Gucci, DelRae Bois de Paradis, Guerlain’s Rose Nacre du Desert, Agent Provocateur, Sisley’s Eau du Soir, Malle Portrait of a Lady.
Have a great weekend, all! May 26, 2017 at 3:42pm

  • Amanda randolph: Hi! Thank you for the give away. I would recommend Jo Malone Red Roses I’ve just started wearing it and it’s lovely! I love reading all of these recommendations I can’t wait to try some of these scents . May 26, 2017 at 3:48pm

  • Sarah: Hello,
That’s great, i am happiness to player even if i never win… OK roses perfumes … hmmm. Personally i am in a phase when i mostly like cheerfull roses that fit well spring weather. But i know well incense-y roses and i recommend 2 beauties in that category. The 1st one is Saffron Rose by Grossmith. It is the most well-crafted version i know of this new classic combo of rose and Oud that everybody is trying to do. The 2nd one is Phi une rose de Kandahar by Andy Tauer. This one is an oriental blend of rose, apricot and vanilla and is Incredibly sexy on skin. Hope that helps. .. May 26, 2017 at 4:38pm

    10 Corso Como May 26, 2017 at 6:03pm

  • Joy: My favorite rose is Maison Fransis Kurkdjian, A La Rose. The depth of this rose is so fantastic. It takes its time to unfold the layers.
I also love Estee Lauder’s Knowing. It is a rose chypre. It is so reasonable in price that I use it to scent lotions, shampoo, conditioner, and unscented body wash.
    Yes, you may contact me.
    Thank you. May 26, 2017 at 7:18pm

  • Aida: The Bond No 9 Fragrance I mentioned in my earlier post is actually called Perfumista Avenue 🌹🌹🌹 May 27, 2017 at 12:42am

  • Tamsin: I love the 2008 Chloe EDP. I find it quite linear and its certainly not a ‘lush’ rose but I find it smells like the drying petals of perhaps an orange rose, with a bit of spice. Please enter me and yes I am happy to be contacted by email. May 27, 2017 at 2:56am

  • Aurora: Thank you Monica and Victoria! I have never tried anything from F. Malle. Yes, I can give my email.

  • MichelleU: 1. To be sincere I do not know any spicy and incensey rose scent but I can tell you about some favorites od mine: a dark rose with a lot of tobacco and oud from PK Perfumes Dirty Rose and a rose from a garden filled with flowers Les Parfums de Rosine Rose D’Ete.

    2. Of course!

Thank you very much! May 27, 2017 at 6:07am

  • Connie: That’s very kind of Monica and I would love to be entered.

    1. My favorite spicy and incense-y rose perfumes are Caron’s Parfum Sacre and (which is a very piquant pepper-clove-cinnamon-myrrh rose) and Amouage’s Epic Woman (a smoky rose with caraway, tea, and cinnamon).
    2. Most certainly! May 27, 2017 at 7:15am

  • Olivia: Thank you for the opportunity! You may contact me by email. I recommend first Amouage Lyric Woman, and second Jo Malone Red Roses. May 27, 2017 at 7:15am

  • Tiamaria: Thank you very much Monica for the generous give away and Victoria for hosting it. My favourites in the spicy/incensey rose category are Portrait of a Lady which took me a while to fall for but now is one of my favourites. SHL777 Rose De Petra and Lyric woman which has the most beautiful opening but on me gets a little dull after the first 30 mins but I continue to wear it just for the opening.

I would love to be entered into the draw and yes you can contact me. May 27, 2017 at 7:39am

  • Eudora: Thanks Monica and Victoria for that amazing giveaway. It would open me a new world of sophisticated discoveries because I feel I am in the beginning of a long travel with fragances.
    1. Hermes Galop came to my mind. A dark bold rose I smelled and loved thanks to Victoria’s review.
    2. 🤔 Yes! You can contact me! May 27, 2017 at 8:16am

  • lesly: For spicy/incense-y I’d go Youth Dew. But Portrait of a Lady and Mad Madame are pretty incredible too. Or even Jil Sander No 4.

And yes you can contact me. May 27, 2017 at 8:25am

  • Jane C: Oud Ispahan by Christian Dior is a warm woodsy perfume with rose notes.

Thank you for such a generous offer Monica and thank you Victoria for providing the venue! May 27, 2017 at 9:39am

  • Lynn LaMar: Monica, first of all, let me thank you for your most generous offer!! Hoo Boy…if ONLY!!! Yes, of course you may email me.
My recommendation for you is Incense Rose
    Eau de Parfum
by Tauer Perfumes. It is amazing. Try it, stay with it through the dry down, and you won’t believe the changes it goes through. Absolutely stunning and elegant!! May 27, 2017 at 10:44am

  • Karen 5.0: Monica, thank you for your generous offer!

    1. At the high end (price-wise) of spicy rose fragrances, you might like Tom Ford’s Cafe Rose Eau De Parfum. At a lower price, there’s TOCCA’s Brigitte.

    2. Please contact me via email if my name is drawn – fingers crossed! 🙂 May 27, 2017 at 11:04am

  • jean erhardt: Happy Memorial Day! What a swell & generous offer.
ROSE FLASH by Tauerville (green, prickly spice, velvet petals and decay) May 27, 2017 at 11:05am

  • Roxann: What fun to read everyone’s favorites. The roses are just beginning to bloom here in the Pacific NW area. My favorite is Diptyque Rose de Mai Essences 2017. That was their limited edition in the gorgeous black glass bottle by Fabrice Pellegrin. I think I shall go spritz some on today! May 27, 2017 at 12:35pm

  • Zenimue: Rossy de Palma Eau de Protection Etat Libre d`Orange is a swarthy velvety rose it contains incense but also a hefty dose of geranium. Calligraphy Rose by Aramis is another option it has an exotic vibe.
John Galliano EDP is a wonderful incense rose combo with aldehydes, it’s no longer
in production but still several on market.
Following this thread since I’m also a dark rose fan 🙂
Feel free to contact me via email if I’m lucky winner. May 27, 2017 at 3:03pm

  • Anna: Well, I can only think of one that blows my socks off every single time and that is Montale White Aoud. I only have a smidgen left of my sample and I am hoarding it like crazy lol. If you don’t mind Oud in general, this is such a pretty scent! Definitely has the incensey/rose vibe but the rose isn’t very strong. On a whole, this frag is uber strong. You definitely only need a little and it wears great in fall and winter! But it will scent everything you wear. Less is more!
After about a 20-30 minute “adjust zone”, it is just so beautiful. I get compliments all the time. Thanks for the opportunity. You are of course very welcome to contact me via email should I win! 😉 May 27, 2017 at 5:22pm

  • Becky: Ester Lauder’s Knowing for a rose perfume. I don’t like rose scents. However I would love to win the giveaway. I live in a small place with few opportunities to sample good perfumes. They are also very expensive, even for low or mid range scents. I got here looking for a jasmine perfume because I fell in love with my jasmine plant’s blossoms. May 27, 2017 at 9:02pm

  • Tam: How sweet of you, Yes you may contact me via email. For incense Comme de Garcons does great incense also I’ve enjoyed Unum, Lavs ( if you love frankincense). For rose Hermes, Rose Ikebana. May 27, 2017 at 9:29pm

  • lena: Thank you Monica for your generosity, and Victoria for making this draw happen 🙂

    1. I’m not sure if this counts as a truly spicy rose, but my suggestion is Anglomania by Vivienne Westwood.

    2. By all means, please do contact me! May 27, 2017 at 10:34pm

  • OnWingsofSaffron: 1) I looked far and wide for a rose scent which I’d like, and finally settled on / returned to an old acquaintance: Sa majesté la rose, by Serge Lutens. I bought a vintage version (palais logo) on eBay. I guess it fits the spicy bill. Incense I do not know.
    2) yes, by all means do contact me.
    3) Thanks for the generous offer! May 28, 2017 at 8:47am

  • Geneviève Fawcett: Thank you for the giveaway Monica. To my mind, Portrait of a Lady by FMalle and Rose Flash by Tauerville would fit the bill. Or Avignon by CdG layered with Une Rose by FMalle. Yes:I can be reached via email. Have a fantastic day everyone! May 28, 2017 at 10:14am

  • Mariann: 1. I also recommend Lyric and definitely second Parfum Sacre, which is a longtime favorite. I would also add Saffron Troublant, which is a wonder saffron/rose combo.
2 of course!! Thanks for the generous offer! May 28, 2017 at 11:20am

  • rainboweyes: I’m not a typical rose lover but, funnily enough, a great fan of Neela Vermeire Mohur. It’s one of my most worn winter scents.
My Mum loves roses though, so I sometimes buy rose perfumes for her. My spicy favourites so far have been Safran Troublant by Artisan Parfumeur and Parfums de Rosine Majalis.

Please don’t include me in the draw. May 28, 2017 at 11:36am

  • Maria: Hi Monica and Victoria!!
As you, I have a lot of decants that I don’t use and I’m trying to reduce my wardrobe to the minimal expression. I don’t have a lot of experience and I only like intimate parfums, but between this category I find that l’Ether from Iunx could be an interesting option. It’s an incense rose, with a touch of saffron, very airy but persistent.
I don’t need to be part of the contest. May 28, 2017 at 12:41pm

  • Meggan: So generous of you Monica! I love samples. I recommend Parfumerie Generale’s Isparta, which has rose and incence. It’s definitely sweet and spicy. You can contact me by email. May 28, 2017 at 12:57pm

  • Edward: 1) Not something that I personally like since I am not into the combo of Rose+Incense but Aramis Calligraphy crossed my mind.
    2) Yes, you may contact me thru my email in case I win.

    Thank you,
    Edward May 28, 2017 at 1:03pm

  • Lucy: Thank you so much, Monica and Victoria!

    1. I recommend Le Mat, by Mendittorosa.

    2. Yes, you may contact me by email 🙂 May 28, 2017 at 1:07pm

  • Alessandra Tribotti: How lovely, Monica and Victoria! I’d say:

    1) Best rose falling in that category for m is Malle’s Portrait of a Lady;

    2) yes, I can indeed be contacted via email

Thanks a lot for this generosity! May 28, 2017 at 5:19pm

  • AfonsoC: Thank you for the opprtunity dear Monica! Good luck everyone.

A spicy and incensey rose perfume? The first one that immediatly comes to my mind is Malle’s incredible Portrait of a Lady. Such a deep and gorgeous rose with a very earthy patchouli background. It feels aromatic and smoky due to the incense and it has a spicy kick which I believe must be cloves and a tiny bit of cinnamon. Glorious, if you ask me.
On a lighter side, Chloé Eau de Parfum Intense is a beautiful rose with a pink pepper kick and a smooth sandalwood base. Very pretty and underrated.

Of course you can contact me by email!

    Thank you! May 28, 2017 at 6:26pm

  • Nina Z: Not entering the contest but wanted to suggest Ormonde Jayne Taif, for a spicy rose. And I will put in my vote for Lyric Woman for a dark rose with frankincense. May 28, 2017 at 9:12pm

  • Neva: Please do not enter me, but I would like to suggest Amouage Epic Woman, which is a deep rose, definitely spicy and has plenty of frankincense. Good luck to everyone participating in the giveaway! May 29, 2017 at 3:06am

  • Maria: Thank you for sharing with us, Monica!
Have you tried Montale Red Flowers, it’s a beautiful spicy rose. Even if I am not in roses I wear it sometimes and just love it.
And on the elegant side, what about Armani Privee? The spicy part is subdued but it’s nevertheless there.
Of course you can contact me by email. May 29, 2017 at 4:38am

  • Hera: Thank you for the giveaway. I would like to receive samples and decants for sure. My favorite roses are FM Une Rose and Guerlain Nahema. May 29, 2017 at 12:28pm

  • ETHEL PARKER: I recommend Rose Nacree du Desert(discontinued) ! It was the first time I was able to fully enjoy a fragrance with Oud! The blending of saffron and rose is exquisite, but then it’s Guerlain! Yes, you can contact me via email ! May 29, 2017 at 3:56pm

  • Sara: Others have mentioned Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady — yessss! I’ll throw in Velvet Rose & Oud by Jo Malone. I’m especially fond of the long-lasting dry body oil ($80 US).

My perfume obsession being a fairly recent thing, the only fragrance I have that meets the requirements is Caron Nuit de Noel. My other suggestion (although I haven’t smelled it) would be Andy Tauer Incense Rose.

I don’t know that it’s spicy, but I love Tom Ford’s Noir de Noir. It’s dark and chocolaty and has some saffron and truffle in it. Just divine. May 30, 2017 at 11:18am

Thank u for this generous giveaway!
My favourite roses are Portrait of a Lady, Heeleys Hippie Rose is nice for a lighter patchouli rose Ormonde Jayne’s Taif, a lovely saffron rose, almost gourmand, Tauer’s Incense Rose makes me incredibly happy, and a different sort of incense rose that I love is Epic Woman, Amouage.

  • Pats: Monica – thank you for your kind gesture. I’m thinking you might like Rosam by Histoires de Parfums. it has many of the facets you asked for – Rose, spicy, oud and powdery. Worth testing. And yes you can contact me via my email.
Had another thought Burning Rose by Carolina Herrera – just so beautiful – a very spicy dusty rose, with cinnamon and patchouli. You gotta try that one as well. Good luck with your search. 🙂 May 30, 2017 at 6:28pm

  • Kath: Paestum Rose and Lutens Rose de Nuit. Please contact me by email. Thank you for being so generous, Monica. May 31, 2017 at 2:16am

Supposedly, the old Opium does contain rose, but while I do love it, I cannot smell the rose…

  • Jennifer: What a ‘smell-tastical’ delight for some lucky winners nose indeed!

For me, I found that wearing aromatics elixir in the warmer weather makes the rose note a bit more full bodied and the heat brings out a spicyness that I don’t get when worn in cooler weather.
An awesome and thoughtful giveaway. Thanks!

    E-mail of course! June 1, 2017 at 12:29am

  • Lolo: I have two favorite rose scents: Malle’s Une Rose is my “take no prisoners” powerhouse rose and Jo Malone’s Red Roses is my “ladylike stroll through a rose garden” scent. I was gifted a small bottle of the Red Roses bath oil, and highly recommend it also.
Yes, you can use my email. Thanks for the opportunity to comment. June 1, 2017 at 12:45am

  • Kari: I don’t need to be entered, but I would recommend Menditerrosa / Talismans Le Mat (Rose and geranium with patchouli, pepper, nutmeg, Clove.) it’s such a gorgeous twist on Rose and has the most stunning packaging to boot. It was a treat to myself using some Christmas gift cards a few months ago.

Tauer Une Rose Chypree, Serge Lutens Rose de Nuit, and Le Labo Rose 31 are other favorite spiced roses. I see several others have recommended them. June 1, 2017 at 9:48am

    • Kari: Hermes Galop too, for a Saffron/soft leather rose. June 1, 2017 at 9:50am
