Top 10 Winter Iris Perfumes

I often hear iris described as a scent incompatible with winter because it echoes its chill too much. But since scents depend more on one’s mood and fantasy, rather than meteorological conditions, I don’t see why iris should be forgotten during these months. While I love iris all year around, its cool, violet toned color palette enhances the cold days for me. Against the whirlwind of the holidays and the new anxieties of the new year, it’s a kind of contemplative, soft scent that helps me carve time for myself and put the world on pause, temporarily.

Iris as a perfume note is half way between florals and woods (the natural essence is extracted from the roots of Iris Pallida). It can assume different characters, depending on how it’s used and what other materials it’s paired with, but the character of iris is strong enough to lend its cool touch to many different accords.

Honoré des Prés I Love Les Carottes

Iris roots and carrots share a number of aromatics in common , which is why I Love Les Carottes is such a clever blend. The carrot lends its apricot-like sweetness and musky warmth to iris, while vanilla and orange play up the teasing gourmand association.

Bulgari Ashlemah : Le Gemme

A vintage powdery iris with a twist of lavender. The price is obscene, but the perfume is oh, so beautiful. A cashmere wrap of a scent. Created by the same perfumer, Daniela Andrier, as Bvlgari Eau Parfumée au Thé Bleu, it has the same iris-lavender bloodline, but in a different, much plusher interpretation.

Van Cleef & Arpels Bois d’Iris

An elegant iris rendition with a seductive touch of ambergris that turns the ordinarily cool and serious note voluptuous.

Cartier I L’Heure Promise

L’Heure Promise turns iris into a delicate vignette, folding it into layers of musks and green notes, yet it combines fragility with assertiveness. A perfect winter morning scent when you want to carry a memory of spring on your sleeve.

Chanel La Pausa 28 Eau de Parfum

The original Eau de Toilette has been my staple for years, but I’m smitten with the Eau de Parfum enough to change allegiance. The new version of La Pausa 28 is perhaps less ethereal and refined, but the harmony between woods and violet-tinged iris is beautiful. It also lasts well, unlike the EDT.

Maison Martin Margiela Replica: Lipstick On

Iris inspires images of vintage glamour, and Lipstick On evokes red lips, pearls on bare skin and a swan down puff dipped into rice powder.  The treatment is luminous and bright, however, which makes the perfume feel modern.

Parfums DelRae Mythique

Mythique proves that iris can be made opulent. A baroque composition of jasmine sambac, sandalwood and amber with iris at its heart. For snowy days and long dark evenings.

Paul & Joe Blanc

An unsung gem, Paul & Joe Blanc is a take on Guerlain Après L’Ondée, but simpler, sweeter and warmer. I have much affection for this unpretentious iris that feels comforting and cozy.

Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist

I didn’t want to revisit the same fragrances that I’ve mentioned previously, but it’s hard to skip the two gold standard irises, Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist and Chanel No 19. Iris Silver Mist is like a macro photograph of an iris blossom, and it smells of leaves, frozen roots and violet petals.

Chanel No 19 Eau de Toilette

I started my love affair with Chanel No 19 by discovering the Eau de Parfum, which was the most floral of all concentrations. Then I wore the extrait de parfum, the softest version. These days I select the Eau de Toilette. It’s easier to find and its green iris accent feels like a burst of color on a grey, overcast day.

  • Cornelia Blimber: I am sorry to hear that the new year brings new anxieties to you.
I love Iris Silver Mist, one of the most beautiful perfumes I ever smelt. I wear it seldom though: must remain something special.
And I treasure my Hiris, in the old blue bottle. January 26, 2018 at 8:09am Reply

    • Victoria: No worries, but thank you. I meant it generally, considering the news, etc.
I love Hiris too, and I was debating on including it, except that it was already included in my other iris lists. January 26, 2018 at 10:00am Reply

    • Emel: Don’t you like the current one? It’s a little touched up, isn’t it? December 9, 2019 at 10:43pm Reply

  • Kristina: Iris is by far my favourite note. I used to wear Chanel 19 in the EdP Version until the reformulation. I am thinking about buying the extrait but I wonder if it stands up to the beauty of the vintage EdP. Interesting, that you describe “Mythique” as opulent – I find it to be the most delicate and precious Iris with touches of suede, perfect for spring. Although I would wear it happily year-round if only I could find it anywhere. Any ideas? January 26, 2018 at 8:20am Reply

    • Victoria: I thought that Luckyscent carried it? Or are you in Europe? January 26, 2018 at 10:01am Reply

        • DelRae Roth: I love Iris and always enjoy hearing others do too, for me it is so elegant.Thank you Victoria for iincluding Mythique.

For Europe you can order online from http://www.galilu.pl in Warsaw. They will send to you and are very happy to assist.

  • Bastet: My favorite winter iris is Annick Goutal Mon Parfum Cherie pat Camille, which I’m wearing today. So rich with its plum and patchouli notes. I have the Edt version, and now I’m wondering if I need the edp as well. Have you tried both Victoria? January 26, 2018 at 9:24am Reply

    • Bastet: Sorry, par Camille of course- spellcheck got me again. January 26, 2018 at 9:26am Reply

    • Victoria: The EDP is more voluptuous, and if you liked the EDT version, I definitely suggest trying the EDP. January 26, 2018 at 10:02am Reply

  • KatieAnn: I recently tried Mythique and found it to be very lovely. The local Sephora has the Maison Martin Margiela Replica Lipstick On, but I have yet to try it. I love how you welcome iris during the coldest time of year. Your description made me think of walking through a snow-swept, icy blue landscape in a pastel Edwardian dress with snow crunching lightly underfoot and smelling of violets. So magical! As for my winter wardrobe, I have been enjoying Delrae’s Amoureuse. It’s so rich and warm with the tuberose and cardamom. But for now, I think I’ll go dab on some Mythique from my little sample. Thank you for the inspiring post! January 26, 2018 at 9:43am Reply

    • Victoria: That’s such a charming image. So far we haven’t had so much snow that remained on the ground for more than a couple of hours, so I do miss the sound of snow crunching underfoot.

Even on the most miserable and coldest days iris feels exactly right. Like a poem bottled. January 26, 2018 at 10:04am Reply

  • Monica: Iris is the note I most love in perfumes. Besides Chanel 19, La Pausa that have been my all time favorites, I also love Annick Goutal Heure Exquise EdP. I recently discovered Carner Barcelona D600 and I am looking forward to trying the new Atelier Cologne Iris Rebelle. January 26, 2018 at 10:01am Reply

    • Victoria: Iris Rebelle is lovely, but I find that it’s very fleeting. February 1, 2018 at 9:18am Reply

  • Ashley: I am in love with Naomi Goodsir Iris Cendre. It is smoky and ashy at first then warms into a sensual yet soft powdery iris. I am a huge fan of iris and this is one of my favorites along with Van Cleef & Arpel Bois d’Iris which is sweeter, softer, and carries more vanilla to me. January 26, 2018 at 10:02am Reply

    • Victoria: Oh, guess what! I’m testing Iris Cendre today, and I agree with you completely. The woody-smoky note is much more subtle in the drydown than it appears at first. January 26, 2018 at 10:05am Reply

  • Filomena: I don’t think I have ever tried or owned an Iris I didn’t like. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite but if I had to it would be Hermes Hiris. I love the fragrance but also love it because of the fact that I bought it when it first came out and wore it on a trip to Italy, where everyone thought I smelled wonderful. So every time I wear it, I think of that Italy trip. Although I love incense, musk, rose, woods and many other notes, I think I love iris the most and own many such as: Mythique, LaPausa, Iris Silver Mist,
Chanel #19, Infusion d’Iris in EDP and Absolut, Iris Poudre, Naomi Goodsir’s Iris Cendre, Miller Terre d’Iris, and Apres L’Ondee. January 26, 2018 at 10:24am Reply

    • Victoria: For me, it’s also hard to pick one favorite, although ISM comes close. February 1, 2018 at 9:19am Reply

  • Austenfan: So glad to see one of my iris favourites featured in a top 10, I mean the fun and lighthearted Love les Carottes.
I also love Mythique and regret the fact that the Delrae’s are no longer to be had in Europe, and I see that I need to try La Pausa in EDP, I love the EDT, but its fleeting character has stopped me from ever wanting to purchase it. January 26, 2018 at 10:44am Reply

    • OnWingsofSaffron: Oh yes, me too! I really think Love les Carottes is a super fragrance. What strikes me each time is how succulent and dribbly-juicy the orange is. January 26, 2018 at 2:27pm Reply

    • Kayliz: I was thinking the same thing about DelRae Roth — but see above:)) January 26, 2018 at 3:03pm Reply

      • Austenfan: I had heard that before, come to think of it. But it used to be so much more accessible here January 26, 2018 at 5:51pm Reply

    • Victoria: Isn’t it a fun perfume? February 1, 2018 at 9:23am Reply

  • Neva: Iris is a perfume note I had to get used to. I don’t own an iris based perfume. It may be still to early for that although I liked my sample of Fazzolari’s Feu Secret and Atelier Cologne’s Silver Iris. While Silver Iris has that cooling effect, Feu Secret feels warm and woody. In wintertime I prefer woody scents that I can wear as a scarf. Feminite du Bois is a good choice and my new powdery woody perfume is mb02 by Biehl Parfumkunstwerke. • zephyr: I need to at least try iris; I have never owned one either. The suggestions here are a perfect starting point! I usually don’t like “powdery”. But some of these may not be that powdery at all and I might end up an iris scent or two. January 26, 2018 at 12:25pm Reply

    • Victoria: mb02 is definitely a good choice if that’s the feeling you’re looking for. February 1, 2018 at 9:24am Reply

  • Severine: Nice post! I recently sniffed Frederic Malle Iris Poudre and Hermes Hiris – both of which I loved! Hiris is heady, insofar as Iris can ever be!
My first iris love was Prada infusion d’iris which is warm. Unfortunately it has been reformulated! When I am anxious, I light incense and meditate! Wishing you peace, love and lightness! 🙂 January 26, 2018 at 10:48am Reply

    Robert Piguet: Bandit
    Balman:Jolie Madame

  • Aimbl: A winter iris that I like is an older version of Frederic Malle Iris Poudre. In the cooler weather, i also like Une Fleur de Cassie and Eau d Hiver whihc I think have iris. Although I love Hiris, 19, and Iris Silver Mist, I don’t tend to wear them in very cold weather. January 26, 2018 at 11:23am Reply

  • briony: I too love iris. It’s always been my favourite note and I’m more than happy to wear it at any time of year. I think Tsarina’s particularly lovely and the only reason I don’t wear Iris Silver Mist more often is that I’m trying to make my bottle last. In winter I tend to wear a lot of heavier perfumes – ambers, incenses and vanillas. I’m having a bit of a Serge Lutens phase – I’m wearing Bois de Vanille today but I nearly chose Chergui. • Victoria: On the one hand, I’m surprised how many people here like iris, since it’s considered such a difficult note, but on another, I’m very happy. February 1, 2018 at 9:28am Reply

  • Jackie Heslop: Hi Victoria, long time no “see”! Nice to hear your voice again.
I love Irises! I recently brought home a sample of Atelier’s promisingly-named Iris Rebelle. It was an instant love for me with clean Gaiac wood notes and a bit of orange blossom — an absolutely gorgeous Iris. But it was completely gone in an hour. I’ve never experienced such a fleeting scent!
Has anyone else tried it, and can you recommend an Iris that’s similar but lasting? January 26, 2018 at 12:43pm Reply

    • Victoria: I’ve tried it only a couple of times and I also found it fleeting. I do like iris with a bit of orange blossom. Bottega Veneta Knot is another favorite. February 1, 2018 at 9:31am Reply

  • AnnieA: One vote for AG L’Heure Exquise for an anytime iris… January 26, 2018 at 1:03pm Reply

  • Sharon: I don’t recall ever smelling iris in perfume since I gravitate toward spicy Orientals. Is there a “reference” smell to give me an idea of the iris scent, or should I seek out the favorites above to sample? January 26, 2018 at 1:49pm Reply

    • Kayliz: I think that would be Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist. In the past I would have said also Chanel 28 La Pausa, for a less intense but more natural-smelling iris. Now it‘s been reformulated as EdP rather than EdT, I‘m not sure about that (only tried it once, in a busy airport along with many other Chanels). January 27, 2018 at 4:42am Reply

      • Sharon: Thank you Kayliz, I will send off for a sample of ISM. January 27, 2018 at 10:37am Reply

    • Victoria: Iris is too complex to be anything but its own reference smell, so I recommend finding a sample of Iris Silver Mist by Lutens. Others on my list are more blended. February 1, 2018 at 5:04am Reply

  • Bellaciao: I used to have iris catalogued as a more autumnal than wintery note. Recently though I made the acquaintance of Montale Iris so intense and changed my mind:) – It is a very straightforward iris in the vein of 19 Poudré. If I hadn’t just got a bottle of the Chanel the Montale would be an immediate buy… However, I also really really like La Pausa in EdP… And that one is just as obscenely priced as Ashlemah…. Iris is an expensive lady to be friends with 🙂 – January 26, 2018 at 3:16pm Reply

    • Victoria: I don’t really find perfume notes seasonal, but some perfumes evoke or fit a particular season better. Iris has more of a general character for me, contemplative and soft, and that is something I crave now.

La Pausa EDP is very expensive, but at least you get a large amount, 6.8oz. Ashlemah is only 3.4oz. February 1, 2018 at 5:03am Reply

  • Marlene: I appreciate your comments on needing a bit of spring on these long winter days. Winter has it’s own beauty and the addition of a scent of iris is just right. I wear Chanel 19,both parfum and Eau de toilette. While the one I wore in the late 1970’s seemed better,I am still happy with the new. I feel a little decadent when I wear my cashmere sweater and a little Chanel. January 26, 2018 at 9:51pm Reply

    • Victoria: Very true. We are having a mild winter so far, so sometimes I actually crave more snow. February 1, 2018 at 4:58am Reply

  • Aurora: Thank you so much for this I find the paradox you raise very intriguing: AdP Iris Nobile EDP is a winter iris to me and so is Dior Homme Intense, it puts a warm blanket between me and the weather.
Other winter perfumes I currently enjoy: Liz Earl No 1, very uplifting, vintage K de Krizia in winter only (so animalic), Molton Brown Rosa Absolute, a lovely budget rose and patchouli a recent discovery, l’Occitane Fleur d’Or Acacia which reminds me of Cinema, Etro Messe de Minuit, I love incense for any season, Private Collection, Amber Ylang, very long lasting, Molto Missoni which resembles Opium and Au Pays de la Fleur d’Oranger Neroli Blanc to transport me to milder climes. • Victoria: By the way, I find the combination of iris and orange blossom very alluring. February 1, 2018 at 4:57am Reply

  • paola: In my winter perfume wardrobe you can find:
Serge Lutens BAPTEME DU FEU, Chanel n.19 poudré, Incense Avignon Comme des Garcons, Dior Homme Parfum ( it’s a male fragrance but I love it, a powerful iris ), Jo Malone Mimosa& Cardamom cologne (almost finished unfortunately), Oud by Reminescence (probably my favourite for this season ) January 27, 2018 at 7:56am Reply

  • Maria-Anna: I love your image of iris fragrance as an atmosphere for thought. I received Chanel no.19 (EDP) as a Christmas present, so have been wearing this quite a bit lately. I have a hyacinth blooming indoors and the sweet, warm notes of the Chanel ring like that to me: richly hopeful for spring. You have inspired me to try my Prada Infusions d’Iris though, to see how the clearer, cooler facet works in winter.

Right now I am wearing L’Heure Bleue, which I guess is supposed to evoke summer twilights, but the powdery violets and spice perfectly warm up a dark winter evening after sundown. January 27, 2018 at 1:37pm Reply

    • Victoria: Can’t agree more with you on L’Heure Bleue. It’s perfect for cold evenings, when it feels especially warm and plush. February 1, 2018 at 4:56am Reply

  • Andy: I wear my irises the most in winter, enjoying way the cool quality plays against chilly weather and heavier, wooly fabrics. I’ve never smelled the Honoré des Prés, but I’ve been appreciating a Hungarian carrot seed oil, my first time smelling this material in its pure state. I was surprised by my recognition of the smell from some iris accords in perfumes. Smelt in combination with a methyl ionone, I thought the result smelled rather convincingly of iris.

For cold weather, I love Iris des Champs, Iris 39, Jo Malone Orris & Sandalwood, Iris Silver Mist, and Iris Cendre. When I revisited L’Heure Bleue recently, I was struck by the iris, which hadn’t so stood out before, and in the cold, the plushness of the EDP felt just right. January 27, 2018 at 3:54pm Reply

    • Victoria: Yes, I also notice more iris in the EDP. February 1, 2018 at 4:55am Reply

  • Emilie: Hello there Victoria and fellow perfume lovers,

I have adored your blog for a while but have been a little too shy to contribute until now. Hope that you don’t mind me joining in! Iris is one of my very favourite notes.

I’m afraid here in Australia it’s a very hot summer day (45 degrees celcius!) However I am wearing Prada Infusion d’Iris because I find its cool, ethereal quality relieving in this heat.

I tend to keep up with my favourite misty florals come winter though and you can most probably smell me in Guerlain Apres l’Ondee, Annick Goutal Un Matin d’Orage or Kenzo Flower (I find this particularly reminiscent of Spring and wear it on rainy days when I need cheering up!) January 27, 2018 at 8:29pm Reply

    • Victoria: Welcome, Emilie! All of us are always happy to meet other people interested in scents, so I’m glad you’ve joined.

As I was writing the post, I was thinking that in the Southern hemisphere it’s summer. Of course, iris can be perfect on a hot summer day too. It’s a perfectly versatile note for me, whereas something like caramel or even warm, sweet roses are hard to wear when it’s too hot outside. In the end, it’s a matter of personal preferences. It’s fun to create your own associations. January 28, 2018 at 3:54am Reply

      • Emilie: I always enjoy reading the “opposite” seasonal lists. Yes, my more honeyed roses definitely go into back-of-the-cupboard-drawer-hibernation during the warmest time of year. January 28, 2018 at 7:25am Reply

  • OnWingsofSaffron: Hello, may I chime in a second time, this time in regard to “Iris Silver Mist” by Serge Lutens. This fragrance as for example his “La Myrrhe” are both gold standards for iris, resp. myrrh.
However, both fragrances have been in his line for a long time, and probably all SL have been reformulated. And so, probably have ISM an LM.
To date I haven’t read that the reformulation hasn’t resulted in less than what it was before; what I do read is that things have gone for the worse.
That is the only reason I do not buy a bottle online from SL. I am afraid that I will buy—for a good sum of money—a once glorious scent with an illustrious name, and will receive a slightly diluted version made sweeter, or more vanillic, or whatever. I’m afraid I lacking in trust here. January 28, 2018 at 4:42am Reply

    • Victoria: I bought my replacement bottle a year ago, and I don’t find it too different. I’ve been wearing this perfume for more than 10 years now. I don’t believe that reformulation always result in something worse than before. It can be different, of course, and for some people that’s bad enough. Iris Silver Mist to me still has the same character and power. None of SL reformulations that I compared side by side have resulted in bland, diluted perfumes.

I don’t advise buying a perfume like Iris Silver Mist without smelling it first, though. It’s too challenging of a perfume. January 28, 2018 at 6:06am Reply

      • OnWingsofSaffron: Thanks for your frank assessment, Victoria! Some of the discussion around vintage editions tends to take on an air of fetish. Then sometimes, as with the Caron perfumes, I am very wary of new “old” perfumes. Good to have a straight statement here.
Yes, I have tested Iris Silver Mist in the Berlin La Fayette, and indeed, it came rather as a shock. I remember it as more or less lacking in charm or delight, yet making up in earnestness and perhaps the stony truth … But then, perhaps I am reading to much into this scent. January 28, 2018 at 7:26am Reply

        • Victoria: Unfortunately, we won’t ever get away from the problem of reformulation, but I also think that some of the complaints are exaggerated. Is Opium today completely destroyed? Well, it’s a very different perfume, but there are many people here who’ve been wearing it for years and who still find it possessing the character of the original. And so on. At some point, I also think that it’s a philosophical question on how one accepts change. The main problem for me is that the brands are not brave enough to admit that they reformulate. I love J’adore Voile de parfum. I didn’t like the original, but this is so different and beautifull. I been searching about the composition and discovered that is the Iris note what I love.

  • maja: Dear Victoria,
How timely! I have been wearing lots of irises lately as I find they sparkle in a particular way during wintertime. Mon parfum Cherie par Camille, Le Cri de la Lumiere, La Pausa edt and ISM above all. I find so much comfort in iris which is strange maybe.
I need to get my Pierre de Lune and the original Nina decants out these days, I’ve missed them. January 29, 2018 at 2:29pm Reply

    • Victoria: I also find iris very comforting. It’s far from the challenging scent people take it to be, once you stop thinking about it as a floral. February 1, 2018 at 4:47am Reply

  • Ariadne: Just got a nice decant of Van Cleef & Arpels Bois d’Iris today. Luuuv it! and will spring for a FB soon. Having lived in New Orleans for over a decade I immediately declared this something to wear there. The wood and dried parchment elements along with the Iris render it very much in keeping with the smells of the vintage architecture there. Waiting on a sample of DelRae Mythique. Could it be I discover I love iris more than rose? The planet may shift. ;=) January 29, 2018 at 6:34pm Reply

    • Victoria: Such different characters, aren’t they, iris and rose? February 1, 2018 at 4:46am Reply

  • Erry: I only realized I love Iris that much when I took note of the FB I have in my small collection of fragrance: Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist, Masque Milano L’Atessa, Annick Goutal Heure Exquise, Guerlain Apres L’Ondee, Chanel Rue Cambon; they are about 40% of the whole collection. And I still crave for a FB of Mythique, Bottega Veneta, and Bois d’Iris.

I may be very stressed, but at least I smell fabuous!

  • Inma: Dear Victoria,
Thank you for introducing me to VC&A’s Bois d’Iris. I am having the opportunity to try it and I am loving it. I´ve been, thaks to you and your blog, exploring iris’ perfumes for some time now. And I feel this has helped me to love Bois d’Iris when I’ve tried it. I missed the sensuality in Hiris and the warmth in CH19. Although they also have it, and there are days only for Hiris or CH19.
Nevertheless, Bois d’Iris has, for me, a balance among coldness, sensuality and warmth that I imagine accompanying me most of the days.
Thank you as always, February 5, 2018 at 9:54am Reply

    • Victoria: I’m so glad to hear it! Iris is a good note to explore, because it’s multifaceted. February 5, 2018 at 11:18am Reply
