In the Realm of Senses & Art Event : June 16

I’m collaborating with the multi-sensory art project called In the Realm of Senses. The idea behind it is to explore the sensory dimensions of various art forms, discover how stimulating one sense enhances the experience of our other senses, and to create a platform where artists and participants can meet and experiment together. As you can see, it’s an extended version of what I do with Bois de Jasmin, so I’m happy to support this initiative. It has long been my belief that olfaction, the overlooked sense, can make our sensory experiences richer and that paying more attention to it gives more facets and colors to our surroundings.

In The Realm of Senses was conceived by Jeff Yang, a Chicago-based violinist, with a fascinating background in classical music and engineering. We’re in the early stages of taking the project off the ground, but among the perfumers involved are Ralf Schwieger and Christophe Laudamiel. If you’re in Chicago on June 16, 2018, please don’t miss our fundraising event.

    • Victoria: Jeff Yang is an excellent musician, so the concert is bound to be great. June 7, 2018 at 8:44am Reply

  • Silvermoon: Yes, fascinating. Love the idea of food and perfume to music. Too bad I can’t be there. We were in Chicago for this past Easter and enjoyed visiting a jazz club. The architecture of the city is a visual pleasure. June 7, 2018 at 12:26pm Reply

    • Victoria: I like the city very much, so it’s a great excuse to return. June 12, 2018 at 2:22am Reply

  • Carla: How interesting. Will you be there? June 7, 2018 at 3:48pm Reply

  • Qwendy: Gosh this sounds great … I was just saying how I would love to go to Chicago, as I have never been. Too bad I am not in the US, otherwise I could actually come! Looking forward to the next phase, do you have a date for the show?

I sure would love to be the inspiration for a Zoo scent based on the Sloth, my Spirit Animal 😉 June 7, 2018 at 3:48pm Reply

    • Victoria: LOL! I wonder what mine would be.

The date depends on the funding, etc. at this stage. June 12, 2018 at 2:23am Reply

      • Emilie: I once had a very strange job interview where they asked what animal best represents you. I think I was meant to answer with something along the lines of “a lion because of my determination” but I was sort of caught off guard so I laughed a little bit and answered with “um, maybe a sparrow?”

Sloths are adorable 😉 I have spent much too much of my time watching internet videos of them! June 12, 2018 at 4:22am Reply

        • Qwendy: Well I was actually conflating Zoo with Zoology but I’m glad you joined in the fun! Animals are such odd and interesting ideas for a “brief” don’t you think? I mean where to start?

Have you sampled the Zoo scents Victoria? Just took a peek and wasn’t drawn in by the site, but it’s probably just a design/generational thing, sniff! June 12, 2018 at 1:12pm Reply

          • Silvermoon: Hi Qwendy, I had a chance to smell some of the Zoologist perfumes in London recently. I liked Civet and Nightingale. They also let me try Moth, which had yet to be launched then. A quirky idea, with the animal drawings, I find them fun.

Regarding sloths : they are absolutely the cutest animals imaginable. I once met an indigenous family in the Amazon who had a pet sloth. He moved in slow motion, was lovingly cuddly and the sweetest natured little chap called Eurico. Ever since then, I love sloths. June 12, 2018 at 2:52pm Reply

            • Qwendy: Sloths are adorable, yet I have not met one since I was a kid at the Bronx Zoo, but if you go to Costa Rica, they are apparently everywhere!

Zoology is quit an interesting line, but then there is the line of perfume called Zoo which is really the one referenced in this blog post! June 12, 2018 at 3:32pm Reply

              • Silvermoon: So, never heard of Zoo before, but have checked their website now. Odd name, because none of their scents refer to animals. Whereas Zoologist, the Canadian perfume brand, names all its perfumes for animals. Hence, when you indicated that you would like a sloth inspired perfume, it seemed to make more sense that it would fit in with the Zoologist collection. June 12, 2018 at 4:11pm Reply

                • Emilie: Silvermoon you lucky thing meeting such an interesting little sloth personality!

I had not heard of the Zoo line of perfumes either and though I’m aware of Zoologist, have not tried them yet (though eager too). Very intrigued by the Moth scent.

Just a thought maybe the name of the line “Zoo” just refers to a collection of things, in this case perfumes instead of animals? June 12, 2018 at 8:30pm Reply

              • Victoria: It’s a line by Christophe Laudamiel. June 13, 2018 at 2:13am Reply

          • Victoria: Not yet. As for Zoologist, I tried a couple, but not thoroughly enough. June 13, 2018 at 2:01am Reply

        • Victoria: I hate those kinds of questions. Also, “what’s your main shortcoming?” Who can appraise such thing objectively and then give an honest answer? When I was interviewing people and I was asked to include it among my questions, I noted that the responses were predictable. I never interviewed anyone but “perfectionists” with “high expectations from themselves.” 🙂 June 13, 2018 at 1:59am Reply

          • Emilie: Hahahaha! This made me laugh a lot. You are right. These questions are not helpful. That was actually a group interview I did and yes, there seemed to be many perfectionists about 😉 June 13, 2018 at 2:03am Reply

  • Emilie: What a wonderful event! Ahh to be able to travel to America easily, I would attend this in a heartbeat! June 7, 2018 at 7:21pm Reply

    • Victoria: I will share the videos from the event when Jeff makes them available. June 12, 2018 at 2:24am Reply

      • Emilie: Thank you! June 12, 2018 at 4:23am Reply

  • Aurora: What a great project, I would love to hear Pictures at an exhibition live, good luck to everyone for the event! June 10, 2018 at 10:18am Reply
