Penhaligon’s The Favourite Perfume Giveaway

I hope that everyone’s week is starting well. Today we have a generous giveaway made possible by Bois de Jasmin’s reader Steven. Steven would like to give away a full bottle of Penhaligon’s The Favourite, 3.4oz, 100ml. It’s fresh, in good condition, with the original box. Steven’s wife received it as a gift from her work colleagues, but it’s not her style of fragrance, and she and Steven would like to send it to someone who can appreciate it. They both like reading your comments. Steven can send his package anywhere in the USA (sanitized and well-wrapped, of course).

I would like to thank our entire Bois de Jasmin community for your generosity and kindness, whether it means giveaways like this, advice or comments.

We are not responsible for leaks or damage during transit or for lost packages.

To participate, please answer these questions. I will randomly draw one winner.

1. Steven’s wife is currently looking for a new fragrance. As Steven says, “she doesn’t like florals or citrus. She like woods and spices. Caron Parfum Sacré used to be her signature, but now she wants something more modern and maybe lighter. Something that can work in hot weather too.” Can you please recommend a fragrance or two?
2. May I contact you via email to notify you of your win and share your email with Steven?

The contest is now closed. The winner is Elaine. Congratulations! I will contact the winner by email shortly.

  • Heather McKay: Thank you for this generous offer! So, I’m definitely more of a floral person so I may not be the best to give advice on a woody perfume. I’ve been thinking about it though and I’m going to recommend Loewe Aura perfume. It’s my favorite perfume out of my comfort zone. It starts off like your standard fruity floral that you smell everywhere. But don’t let that fool you. Once it settles on your skin, it turns into this gorgeous refined soft wood and rose base. When I wear it I can’t stop smelling myself. All reviews call it elegant and refined and that’s exactly how I’d describe it. It’s a refined and mature perfume, but still quite simple and beautiful.

And yes you can email me. Thanks again! May 31, 2021 at 7:27am

  • Jeanne: I am also a woman who prefers non-floral scents. An overlooked spectacular fragrance for hot summer days is: Un Jardin Apres la Mousson by Hermès, it is transportive. Another current favorite is Aesop’s Marrakech Intense Eau de Parfum, an easy everday fragrance. I hope you find something you love!

Yes, you can email me. Thank you for your generous offer! May 31, 2021 at 7:43am

    • Elena: Good suggestion of Apres la Mousson! A favorite! May 31, 2021 at 9:40am

      • Julie: Jo Malone makes many wood note colognes light for summer too. May 31, 2021 at 12:25pm

  • Iolanda: Gipsy water by Byredo, it’s woody but fresh, with citrus note and I think it’ s a good choice for summertime.
    2) yes but unfortunately I’m in Italy 🙁 May 31, 2021 at 8:31am

    • Iolanda: Oh …She does not like citrus note…sorry May 31, 2021 at 9:14am

      • Marilyn: Steven…Thank you for posing this great question to the audience and for the generous offer. My fragrance knowledge and experience are limited, and I lean on Bois de Jasmin and its readers for education and suggestions. I look forward to exploring the fragrances recommended here for your wife. Though I don’t have any to offer myself, I am appreciative.

I’m happy to be contacted and have my email shared with Steven. May 31, 2021 at 9:35am

      • Perfumelover67: Thank you, Steven for such generous giveaway.

        1. I would recommend Comme des Garcons Kyoto, L’Artisan Passage d’ Enfer, Serge Lutens Santal Majuscule, Frederic Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire, Iunx No2 L’Eau Sento, Sonoma Scent Studio Forest Walk.

        2. You can contact me via email and share it with Steven. May 31, 2021 at 9:48am

        • Tati: You named four of my favorites, and I didn’t think this was my style of perfume! The only one I don’t wear as much is Santal Majuscule — it is powerful. May 31, 2021 at 12:47pm

  • Colleen Geary: I would recommend Enchanted Woods by Pacifica.
    Yes, you may email me.
What a fun way to start the summer! May 31, 2021 at 9:13am

  • Ellen: I would recommend gris charnel from BDK. I recently discovered this brand (it’s been around for years) and I am very much enjoying the ones I’ve tried! (Gris charnel, pas ce soir and rouge smoking). From the notes you describe gris charnel could be a good fit!
Yes of course you can contact me via email. May 31, 2021 at 9:20am

  • Melody: Hello! Santal Blush by Tom Ford is a rich, velvety, soft woody fragrance that I love and works beautifully in summer. May 31, 2021 at 9:27am

    • Melody: Thank you for the generous offer- yes you can email me. 🙂 May 31, 2021 at 9:28am

  • Judith Turack: I love cedar based scents and wear Hermes
Terre de Hermes cologne May 31, 2021 at 9:36am

  • Elena Wood: How generous! You may email me, and I would suggest Serge Lutens Feminite du Bois. Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club, perhaps? May 31, 2021 at 9:38am

  • Shirley Picardi: My favorite summer fragrance is “Sailing Day”. It reminds me of sailboat racing in Marblehead about 40 years ago. I was the “foredeck monkey”. Any sailors out there? Now my husband Tony and I are 73, and I cannot believe I was ever that intrepid. No need to include me in your giveaway… my 2 perfume refrigerators are full. Enjoy Memorial Day, everyone! May 31, 2021 at 9:51am

    • Helen: Hello Steven, I am not eligible for yours and your wife’s very kind giveaway, as I do not live in the United States, however I would like to repay your generosity to others by suggesting some possible fragrances.

Frapin is a house I adore. Some of their fragrances might fit the bill for your wife, with enough variety in their scent stable to find that lighter and more modern twist she is seeking on Caron Parfum Sacre (I admire her taste!)

L’Humaniste is worth trying, and my “Christmas in a bottle” is Frapin 1270.
My personal favourite however is Frapin’s Isle of Man, which I call their Man of All Seasons scent. It is wonderfully comfy in cool months or rain, but transforms into a light marine for cooler days.

I also wholeheartedly agree that BDK’s Gris Charnel is a worthy contender. A modern masterpiece! I hope you and your wife enjoy investigating all our suggestions. Please let us know what she chooses. June 1, 2021 at 6:20am

  • Mingzhe Wang: How wonderful! I would echo some other commenter’s opinion that y9ou can’t go wrong with Feminite du Bois! It is a perfect blend of wood and spices. For a beautiful cool spice scent, I love Hermes Epice Marine. It works beautifully in both warm and cool weather. May 31, 2021 at 9:51am

  • Eileen: Most of my favorites are florals but I think Chanel’s Cristalle might be a great summer frangrance.

And, yes, you can email me! May 31, 2021 at 9:56am

  • Gretchen: I love this community! Please don’t enter me in the draw, but as a fellow woods lover, I will echo the Sonoma Scent Studio Forest Walk recommendation. Winter Woods is also an idea, but it is a bit sweeter. I would also suggest Ormonde Jayne Ormonde Woman and Isfarkand, the latter especially for summer. Iunx L’ether was recommended to me by a BDJ reader and I am smitten! May 31, 2021 at 9:57am

  • Hamamelis: No need to enter me in the draw. There are two scents that may fit your wife, April Aromatics Precious Woods, and Neila Vermeire’s Trayee. May 31, 2021 at 10:12am

  • Shirley Picardi: Sailing Day is made by Maison Margiela Replica. May 31, 2021 at 10:15am

  • Diana Moon: How fun! What a generous offering; I am new to fragrance and have a limited repertoire so here is my suggestion: Sarah Horowitz ‘HEREAFTER’ I love woods and there is cedar wood, sandalwood, amber, orange and cardamom — and I love it; This will be my first summer wearing Hereafter so we’ll see how it takes to the sun! Let’s see if I get lucky to receive an email from you Victoria; Thanks so much for all your work; I love your website/blog. Wonderful! May 31, 2021 at 10:26am

  • Cornelia Blimber: What a generous offer! I am not in the draw, living in Holland. I guess your wife could be happy with Guerlain’s Samsara. (jasmin, sandalwood). May 31, 2021 at 10:41am

  • Patricia Maccari: While this is not woody, it is unusual and surely not floral. Guerlain’s Gourmand Coquin has a chocolate & smoky tea mix with tiny bit of rose, black pepper & a dash of rum. It hardly sounds as lovely as it is. I’d call this one a sleeper, but
it’s absolutely lovely. Thank you so much for your offer!
For sure, you may contact me via email. May 31, 2021 at 10:50am

  • Kneale: What a lovely and thoughtful giveaway! I can recommend a few scents that might fit the bill: Terre d’Hermès and Angéliques Sous La Pluie by Jean-Claude Ellena for Frédérique Malle. I also agree with Eileen that Cristalle is ideal! Yes, I can be contacted by email. May 31, 2021 at 10:54am

  • Janine Yasovant: Penhaligon’s is a British perfumery.
soft to be strong..cedar wood, sandalwood, amber, orange and cardamom , how fantastic!

I think of Old Spice ..Victoria , I really want to try 🙂 May 31, 2021 at 11:38am

  • madtowngirl: Thank you for the giveaway!

    1. Woods immediately brings to mind 10 Corso Como or Diptyque Tam Dao edt- which is dry enough that it would work well in summer. For classics, also Dior Dune or Samsara. For modern, perhaps Heretic Scandalwood or Vanilj by Maya Njie- which is not a sweet vanilla at all and has notes of cedar and cardamom.
    2. Yes, you may contact me by email and share my email with Steven. May 31, 2021 at 11:49am

  • rickyrebarco: I would recommend diptyque Philosykos EDP which is light, refreshing, woody and green. Same for KierinNYC 10 a.m. Flirt. Serge Lutens also has many spicy and woody scents. A favorite is Lutens’ Five O’Clock au Gigembre.

ayes, you and Steven can email me with details and thanks to Steven for the drawing. May 31, 2021 at 12:47pm

  • Aida Hashemi: Hello lovelies, I’m a woodsy scents lover as well, as the florals give me headaches and the citrus, fresh fragrances turn super sour on my skin. My absolute latest woodsy obsession is Bond No 9, Tribeca. It has a beyond delightful sophistication that leaves the most unforgettable trail, to the point that I hug my shirts afterwards to continue the experience;-)
I also love Serge Lutens Chergui, as well as Louis Vuitton’s Matiere Noir. I got both of those in Paris, so each whiff transports me back to that magical trip.
Yes you can email me 🙂 May 31, 2021 at 12:47pm

  • KatieAnn: What a wonderful and generous giveaway! The fragrances that came to mind are:
    Eau des Merveilles by Hermes
    L’Ambre des Merveilles by Hermes
    Christian Dior Dune
Cedre Sambac by Hermes (I really don’t get any florals from this. It is mainly a sandalwood smelling cedar to my nose)

I wish you happy perfume hunting!
    Yes, you may share my e-mail. 🙂 May 31, 2021 at 12:49pm

  • Kenna: 1) Hands down I would recommend Sensuous by Estée Lauder; it’s not niche but it is lovely and seductive and woody… it envelops the wearer in warmth and elegance. Second recommendation is bolder but I have to mention Psychedelique by Jovoy. Love both of these so much….

2). Yes you may contact me by email. May 31, 2021 at 1:04pm

  • Tati: One of my favorite and most unusual of this type of scent is Dzongkha by L’Artisan. The notes are spices, incense, cedar, and iris. It is a very clean, dry, fresh smell. Makes one feel like one is up in the mountains. The classic might be L’Air du Desert Marocain by Tauer, but it is not light. May 31, 2021 at 1:05pm

    • Tati: No need to enter me, BTW. May 31, 2021 at 1:07pm

  • Claudia D.: 1. I would recommend Calvin Klein Reveal. It is no longer in production, but is still easy to find inexpensively. Not for everyone, though. You might also try Penhaligon’s Lothair.

    2. Yes, you may contact me and share my email. Thank you for the giveaway! May 31, 2021 at 1:46pm

  • Karen E.: 1) Thank you for this generous offer! The fragrance that leapt to my mind is Tam Dao EDT by Diptique. It is a dry sandlewood with other woods and ticks the boxes for a more modern fragrance that would work well in warm weather. Good luck on your search!
    2) yes May 31, 2021 at 2:27pm

  • Rachel: You might try Penhaligon’s Elixir for a light and spicy incense. Yes, please contact me!
Thank you Steven and Victoria so much for this giveaway! May 31, 2021 at 2:46pm

  • Theresa: what a generous giveaway! I would love to throw my hat in the ring!
    1) May I suggest a classic fragrance, Guerlain’s Habit Rouge? I think it is good year round. Another non-floral favorite of mine is Papillon’s Angelique. And for a third, unusual, choice, try Salamanca by Olympic Orchids. I love it summer or winter!
    2) Yes, of course you may contact me by email if I am so fortunate as to win. May 31, 2021 at 2:50pm

  • Anne: Thank you, Steven and Victoria for your generosity.
Tom Ford’s Oud Wood is a rich sandalwood scent, may be too rich for summer. Tom Ford’s Ombré Leather may also suit, and it has a touch of violet that works for summer. Hermès has a range of Merveilles scents that are warm and spicy.
Of course you may contact me by email and share my email with Steven. May 31, 2021 at 3:04pm

  • Giovanna: May I suggest Iris Silver Mist by Serge Lutens?
(not entering the giveaway, I am in Europe) May 31, 2021 at 3:16pm

  • Antonia Navarro: Hello and thank you for your generous offer.

I, too, am fond of woods and spices, specifically cedar wood and sandalwood.
As you’re offering Penhaligon (a favorite), may I suggest Halfeti (I love this one) or Vaara.

Super Cedar by Byredo (a clean, close-to-the-skin wood, I think would be very nice for summer). Black Saffron also by the same is another.

Lastly, Nomade by Chloe. Surprised me by how much I love this one. Oak moss, and just lovely.

Yes, do please share my email.
Thank you again and happy hunting. May 31, 2021 at 4:13pm

  • Christine Corretti: Estee Lauder’s Bronze Goddess (creamy, sweet woody base)

Jo Malone’s collection includes many complex woody, fruity/spicy scents, including the award winning “English Oak and Hazelnut.” May 31, 2021 at 4:14pm

  • Fazal: Please don’t enter me in the draw. However, I would like to recommend Hermes Eau des Merveilles. I know it lists citrus as one of the notes but to me the woody and spicy elements of the fragrance surpass any citrusy vibes. I not only love this fragrance in edt but also parfum version. The parfum version has a richer composition and little less spice than the edt version. May 31, 2021 at 5:45pm

  • Laura: 1. Thanks so much for this generous offer! Steven, I would suggest a completely different Penhaligon’s scent for your wife: Clandestine Clara, from the Portraits collection. It’s a lovely woody spicy scent with an interesting rum note. Yet I find it sheer and close enough to the skin that it would wear nicely in warmer weather.
    2. Yes, of course you can email me! May 31, 2021 at 7:14pm

  • Kat Hi Five: Thanks for this giveaway Victoria and Steven. Steven, your wife might like The Vagabond Prince Enchanted Forest. It is a lovely green wood with a touch of spice. Like Caron Sacre (Yes!), it is unusual and very memorable. Enjoy your journey. And yes, you may contact me and share my email May 31, 2021 at 7:27pm

  • Elizabeth: My fragrance knowledge is limited, but Steven, your wife might like to try a sample of Initio’s “Rehab”. The bergamot is more spicy than anything else — I don’t get citrus from it. It dries down to a scent that makes me imagine an elegant old library once owned by some pipe-smoking wizard. (And yes, please do contact me and share my email.) May 31, 2021 at 7:43pm

  • maggiecat: All of the recommendations here are excellent. I have another suggestion that I haven’t seen here though, but you’ll have to keep an open mind. Mary Kay has a perfume called “If You Believe, which is a citrus open/sandalwood drydown scent I absolutely love. It’s inexpensive, but a delight to wear (and my default is Chanel, so…). I hope you find a new favorite (and yes you can share my email). May 31, 2021 at 8:47pm

  • Lolo: I also recommend that most “transportive” of fragrances, Tauer’s deliciously dry, spicy L’air du Desert Marocain -just a “dab” for summer. Yes, you may contact me and share my email. Best of luck in finding your preferred scent. May 31, 2021 at 9:15pm

  • Kristy: Thank you! I would love to be considered for this! Two of my favorites that have not been named are Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt and Juliette has a gun Lady Vengeance! Yes, you may Email me! June 1, 2021 at 12:29am

  • Hilde: Hi Steven,
I would recommend your wife to try Lalique Encre Noire pour Homme. It’s woody with the vetiver, but also fresh. I find it suitable as well for winter as for summer.
And one my favourites for summer has already been mentioned: Hermès Un Jardin après la Mousson.

    I can’t participate, because I live in Belgium. June 1, 2021 at 4:05am

  • Allison: Hello,

I highly recommend Paestum Rose by Eau de Italie. It’s described as “rose enshrined by incense.” The first time I smelled it I thought of Parfum Sacre. Notes include davana, pepper, coriander, Turkish rose, incense, osmanthus, myrrh, opoponax, papyrus, and wenghe.

And please share my email. June 1, 2021 at 9:17am

  • Stacey: I commend Slowdive by Hiram Green or Forest Lungs from Nue Co. both are woodsy and warm. Good luck!

Thank you for the offer. Yes you can contact me. June 1, 2021 at 9:29am

  • Sarah: I’d suggest Kenzo Jungle Elephant – it is a behemoth, and if she doesn’t care for cloves it won’t be the best choice.

I really like SL Gris Clair, lavender and soft smoke and somehow smells cold to me.

Ormonde Jayne Ormonde Woman is lovely and woody and the black hemlock is special but very fleeting on me.

One on my list to try is RdF Falling trees.

You’re welcome to share my email address for purposes of this giveaway. June 1, 2021 at 11:02am

  • Susan Jamison: Perhaps she would enjoy Tom Ford’s Santal Blush, Taste of Heaven By Kilian, or Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka?

Yes please share my email if I win the draw. June 1, 2021 at 4:19pm

  • Lora: Hello Steven,

Thank you for the generous giveaway.
I recommend Bal d’Afrique by Byredo, it does have a citrus note but doesn’t read citrusy. It is a beautiful all season frag in my opinion. Also, What We Do In Paris Is Secret by A Lab On Fire created by Dominique Ropion. Both are niche so she will be scented uniquely I think and not so mainstream.
Yes you can contact me. June 1, 2021 at 8:32pm

  • Cheryl G.: Ohhh, your wife needs Ormande Woman by Ormonde Jayne it’s special. Good luck with your/her pursuit. Please share my email if I’m the lucky duck. June 1, 2021 at 11:25pm

  • Elaine: Thank you for this great offer! I think that #
Steven’s wife would like Diptyque’s Tam Dao or Eau Duelle. Tam Dao is really nice in warm weather.
Yes, you can contact me! June 2, 2021 at 12:35am

  • Karina: Please don‘t include me in the draw.
So many brilliant recommendations here. I would like to emphasise a few I agree and add a few of my own.

Serge Lutens: Feminite du Bois (or any of the other Bois?) and Gris Clair
Ditptyque: Philosykos (leafy with a creamy woody cedre base) Eau Duelle (Vanilla – but not sweet), Tam Dao (sandalwood and cedar – edp is a tad spicier that edt to my nose)
10 Corso Como (as a spicier alternative to tam dao)
Kenzo – Jungle L’Elephant (this is a big perfume though, about as subtle as you would imagine an elephant in a china shop to be)
L’Artisan – Dzing (unusual but I love it)
Chanel Coco – more spicy than woodsy. I absolutely adore this one.
Armani Prive – Bois d’Encens (incense + cedar)
Gallivant – Bukhara (iris, woods, spices)
Tauer – L’Air du desert marocain

Gosh! And I could go on to recommend more. Spices & woods can go in so many directions. Hope your wife finds something she loves Steven! June 2, 2021 at 7:23am

  • Natalie: Atelier Cologne Bois Blonds, because it has woody and spicy notes, but is light feeling enough that it would not be too heavy in warm weather. I’d like to enter and you may email me June 2, 2021 at 9:30am

  • Kathleen: I suggest Rag & Bone Oddity for spice and woods, or perhaps Comme de Garcons 2.
OK to share my email. June 2, 2021 at 11:17am

  • JillS: Steven, thank you so much. Please enter me un the draw and you may email me. Omnia is a nice and reasonably priced fragrance. I also like Vetyveiro edt if your wife likes vetiver. Bois des Iles by Chanel is beautiful. June 2, 2021 at 2:47pm

  • Helen: I love YSL Libre, also Madini Medera de Orient, and Guerlain Samsara! June 2, 2021 at 6:06pm

  • Roxann: How very kind. I would suggest Wood and Spice by Creed. It’s very nice. Or for a more affordale choice Jo Malone Wood Sage snd Sea Salt. Yes. You can contact me. I hope Victoria can let us know what she chooses. June 3, 2021 at 12:18am

  • Barbara Blalock: Yes please enter me in the drawing and of course you may email me.
My first suggestion is another by Caron, Fleur de Rocaille. I believe it means rock garden.
As I live in the Southwest, I can say that a garden here might be largely cactus or succulents which have little aroma. The air is very dry so Scent is very subtle. Not at all tropical!

If you can find a more vintage scent, Canoe by Tabu was one that I grew up wearing.

    Good luck! June 3, 2021 at 1:07am

  • Katya: Hi! I just came across your blog because of your article about indolic jasmine which I found very interesting. Thank you!
As for your friend, let her try Boucheron, it’s light yet spicy. Very classy.
And yes, I’d like to enter giveaway and you can email me 🙂 June 3, 2021 at 4:46am

  • Silke: Comme das Garcons produces al lot of spicy-woody scents, for example blackpepper or wonderwood. Kyoto and Hinoki are green-woody incense parfums. For a lighter spicy perfume, you could try Nutmeg & Ginger of Malone.
Of course you can notify me and share my E-mail-adress. June 3, 2021 at 2:29pm

  • FireAnt: Hi
This is my first time commenting, although I have been reading for years. I would think Chloe Nomade would be an excellent, affordable and easily obtainable woody spicy perfume for Steven’s wife. I also love Le Lion, Chanel’s newest. It is surprisingly lovely in the heat of the desert. I also think Sycomore is a lovely woody and spicy.

Of course you may share my email. June 3, 2021 at 7:25pm

  • sillage4ever: I’m in the USA, it’s okay to share my email, and I suggest Sens et Bois by The Different Company, a light incense-wood and pepper fragrance that I find very pleasing and peaceful. June 4, 2021 at 12:44am

  • Brigitte: 1000 Flowers Ode for spice and woods. Also, 1000 Flowers Reglisse Noire which is a refreshing take on licorice, not floral or citrus and can be worn year round. St Clair Scents First Cut with lavender absolute, hay and tobacco.
Yes, you may contact me. June 4, 2021 at 11:34am
