It is now official—Audrey Tautou is going to be the new face for Chanel No 5. Jean-Pierre Jeunet will direct the next No.5 advertising film, which will be the third collaboration between Tautou and Jeunet (she has starred in his “Amelie” and “The Long Engagement.”) The film will be released in 2009.
I adore Audrey Tautou, and I look forward to seeing the new marketing campaign, but I still wonder how Amelie will manage to evoke the spirit of Coco. What are your thoughts?

violetnoir: Amelie is just one of her many varied roles, so I suspect that she will be a wonderful addition to the Chanel marketing team. May 5, 2008 at 3:38pm
Cara: Eck, I will be in minority, but I really dislike Audrey Tautou. I really don’t see her as the face of Chanel No 5. That being said, I didn’t like Kidman either. May 6, 2008 at 8:33am
Cara: Sorry to flood you with comments, but I agree with Marina. Audrey is too cute for Chanel. I guess that is what I was trying to say before. Nope, don’t see her for Chanel. May 6, 2008 at 9:42am
Cai: Tautou has a quirky, pixie kind of look. Not what the image for Chanel or No.5 is in my mind. I didn’t like Kidman either. May 6, 2008 at 1:14pm
Marina: I don’t see it…Unless they are going for a softer, “cuter” look, would be a nice change, but not, somehow, Chanel. May 6, 2008 at 9:23am
Boisdejasmin: R, I am very curious to see the film. I just seem to see Amelie in every single role she does. I like her very much, however. May 7, 2008 at 9:01am
Boisdejasmin: Cara, I also did not like Kidman at all. May 7, 2008 at 9:01am
Boisdejasmin: Marina, I guess that as much as I like Audrey, I still wonder how she will be able to capture the Chanel look. Somehow, I see her more as a Guerlain girl. May 7, 2008 at 9:13am
girlsodeadly: Catherine Deneuve, Carole Bouquet had something I don ‘t see in the generation of these new french actresses of no character. Isabelle Adjani still looks young, she could have been the new face for No5, or Emmanuella Beart although her being a leftist political activist is probably not acceptable for Chanel ‘s anglo-american market but I love her, she posed nude at 40 in the french Vogue to prove women don ‘t have to be 16 yr old girls to be sexy and sexually desirable. Audrey Tautou is dull, short and so politically correct, the boring french girl next door that you don ‘t even pay attention to in real life!
Coco Chanel was a woman of character and she would have certainly hated this most unfortunate choice. May 8, 2008 at 1:12am
Annette: I think Audrey Tautou is an excellent choice for No.5. She embodies simplicity, sophistication and the modern woman. She is well read, has helped to preserve animal sanctuaries and her acting role models range from Paul Newman to Juliette Lewis. There is much more to this woman than just her character in “Amelie”.
Kidman’s image for No. 5 was too glamorous and impractical. Chanel’s success was due to her ability to design fashionable, yet practical clothing for the modern woman during a time when comfort was exchanged for corsets. The fragrance No.5 is often described as a sheer skin scent and/or something that can be worn everyday at anytime. By choosing Audrey, I think that the Chanel House is going back to her roots where comfort meets casual elegance. May 8, 2008 at 10:05am
girlsodeadly: Annette, I agree Coco Chanel designed practical fashion for modern women but the Chanel woman she always had in mind was a woman of character. To me Carole Bouquet represented best this modern of character; intelligence, beauty and distance. Audrey Toutau doesn ‘t stand out at all for me, she ‘s so average, this is not what No 5 is about. lavinia: I can’t wait to see the film. Amelie is one of my top five favourite films.
But I think that both Kidman and Tautou are too petite and etheral for No.5. May 10, 2008 at 4:28pm
Ace: They must have wanted someone who is French, female, famous and YOUNG. Eva Green is already taken. Marion Cotillard has just gotten famous in the past year or so, and she’s over 30. Audrey Tautou is the only one I can think of who is under 30. May 12, 2008 at 4:54pm
Barbara: I like Audrey Tatou, but she would have been a better face for Chance or Coco Mlle. Bring on the beautiful, sophisticated, French Juliette Binoche for No 5!!! May 16, 2008 at 8:53pm
jay jaghy: I think Audrey is a fantastic selection. She is naturally beautiful, has wonderful features and is incredibly feminine. That girl next door look, yeah maybe, but at the same time, she has poise, elegance and a wonderful caring nature. Chanel I think have made a wonderful choice in a wonderful lady.
