More on how perfume is made. The International Fragrance Association of North America (IFRANA) has recently released the first in a series of several short documentary-style films.“Designing a Fragrance: From Idea to Scent” features interviews with perfumers like Carlos Benaim, Christophe Laudamiel, Steven Claisse and Mark Banwer. It’s a short 3 minute film that outlines how a scent concept takes shape.

Jan Last: Part of the allure of perfume, for me, is the thinking process that went into the scent.
Why did the perfumer think big tuberose, or why did a scent become masculine, feminine or unisex? Books are a good way to investigate, but these new documentaries are wonderful.
Thank you for these personal glimpses into the perfumer’s world. February 15, 2013 at 10:51am
Victoria: For me too!
I like the part when Carlos Benaim says that whenever he think of a new fragrance idea, he feels like a child with a new toy to play. February 15, 2013 at 11:05am
Jennifer: My one quibble with this video is that I wish they had shown people’s names when they were talking because I didn’t know who anybody was.
That aside, I liked the part about being inspired to design a fragrance by the color of a golf shirt. It made me smile. February 15, 2013 at 2:16pm
Victoria: Good point! I myself wished that they did. The gentleman with glasses is Carlos Benaim. The young guy in a bright shirt is Christophe Laudamiel. February 15, 2013 at 2:20pm
