Lightning

Star rating: 5 stars–outstanding/potential classic, 4 stars–very good, 3 stars–adequate, 2 stars–disappointing, 1 star–poor.

Joel Rosenthal’s creations tend to not so much develop on the skin, as to scatter in unpredictable patterns like a handful of spilled pearls. In some cases, the results are odd, while in others they are odd, but fascinating. JAR Bolt of Lightning is one of the most unusual creations from the house, with its pairing of white florals and green fruit, creating a deep wet accord against a hot floral breath. Crushed red currants, broken twigs and blooming dahlias is what I think about whenever I wear Bolt of Lightning. It makes me think of a summer garden on a hot July morning, when the dew is evaporating quickly from the leaves and the scents of wet foliage and blooming flowers are hanging thickly in the air.

Once the initial green currant bud note softens, the juicy tart berry comes to the fore. It is rather subtle, but very refreshing. Finally, a note that reminds me of green Bosc pears appears. Intertwining with dark tuberose, it nevertheless remains vibrant, ornamenting the richness of the composition.

  • Robin: Sounds wonderful V. If they ever get that ceiling right in BG, maybe I’ll get to try it 😉 July 13, 2005 at 10:57am Reply

  • mreenymo: V, I was just thinking about JAR this morning. Don’t know why I was, but I guess great minds think alike! :):)

All joking aside, these fragrances sound so unique, that when and if I ever get to Paris, I plan to visit his store.

  • Victoria: R&R, I think that you both might like this one. I find Bolt of Lightning to be the most unusual of all JAR perfumes. Of course, it happens to be the most expensive… July 14, 2005 at 4:00pm Reply

  • parislondres: Hi V! As you know this is my fav from the entire JAR lot! It is sadly the most expensive. 🙁 July 15, 2005 at 1:13pm Reply

  • Victoria: We are perfume sisters after all, aren’t we! 🙂 Despite liking BoL, I just cannot imagine shelling out $700 or so for it. That’s just too decadent. July 15, 2005 at 1:23pm Reply
