As I once heard, Guerlain is for cocottes, Caron is for countesses. Agree or disagree?

I don’t think they differ widely in scent, the EDT is punchier and a bit brighter in the top notes and the EDP clings more to the skin and lasts…April 26, 2024 at 12:50pm
Moon Bloom is my favorite tuberose (plus jasmine), though it doesn’t have the depth and staying power it once had.April 25, 2024 at 9:30pm

LaureAnne: I’ve heard this or something similar but I see it differently. Caron scents nowadays are brasher and louder (to my nose) and Guerlain fragrances seem deep, rich, elegant, much more subtle. Well, it may be that countesses ARE brash and loud and cocottes elegant and subtle. I really wouldn’t know. May 28, 2005 at 8:05pm
N aka parislondres: Darling V! Yes, that is how the story goes about Caron and Guerlain!
I enjoy both the houses but do find Carons more unique in that they do not have a clear caron accord (many claim that the musty smell in Caron perfumes is the Caron accord!). I wear Guerlains on days when I want to feel like a grown up woman and feel good about myself. Caron are for days when I feel really chic. 🙂
Cannot wait for the Caron week as you know I love that house too!
Hope you enjoyed a great weekend.

~clearing: I lOvE Chant D’Aromes!!! The wonderful deantiquer (Beth) sent a sample to me and I nursed it, or it nursed me.. I’d like to buy that one and can’t wait to hear what you have to say about it. (Please include the pronunciation…my French is very, very poor) Already I’ve learned so much from your writing. Thankyou. May 31, 2005 at 1:02pm
luca turin: It was “Caron is for duchesses” actually, and my former landlady Mme Clouzot sais it to me in 1970 🙂 June 14, 2005 at 1:37pm
Victoria: I remember coming across it in some Russian novel, “Guerlain dlja kokotok, Caron dlja knjagin’.” It had a better ring than my English version.
“Guerlain is for cocottes, Caron is for duchesses.” Thanks for correcting. Your landlady must have been quite a character. I wonder where the expression came from.
For some reason, this phrase is stuck in my mind. June 14, 2005 at 1:51pm
Romina: Well, then I am what I am and therefore I must be a cocotte. Outside of Nuit de Noel, I had trouble getting in Caron myself. Bellodgia is my mum’s and smells divine on her. One whiff of Narcisse Noir I turn into Mommy Dearest — NO WIRE HANGERS!! 😛 June 23, 2006 at 10:46pm
