Things I Learned in 12 Years of Bois de Jasmin

12 years is quite a milestone for a project that I started as a political science graduate student wanting a creative outlet beyond politics and economics. I picked a name, Bois de Jasmin, Jasmine Forest, fantasing of a place where I would rather be instead of a small university town, and wrote a review of Guerlain Jicky, a fragrance created in 1889, the same year the Eiffel Tower officially opened in Paris. The tower received scathing criticism–“a metal asparagus,” as one reviewer called it, while Jicky was praised as avant-garde. So I wrote about perfume classics and the time during which they were created, Balanchine ballets and the links between scent and painting. I was having fun and I thought of Bois de Jasmin as a much needed diversion. Little did I suspect that soon enough it would inspire me to make even greater changes.

When I started thinking and writing about perfume, I rebelled against the idea of olfaction as a superfluous sense. “To which organic sense do we owe the least and which seems to be the most dispensable? The sense of smell. It does not pay us to cultivate it or to refine it in order to gain enjoyment; this sense can pick up more objects of aversion than of pleasure (especially in crowded places) and besides, the pleasure coming from the sense of smell cannot be other than fleeting and transitory,” said Kant. I was discovering exactly the opposite. Paying attention to my sense of smell helped me make connections that I ordinarily wouldn’t have noticed.  It inspired me to study new subjects, travel and even learn new languages. Using my nose more often made my world infinitely richer.

I wanted to talk about all of these exciting discoveries with others. I wanted to share that perfumery is an artistic pursuit, that Flaubert was quite a nose, that Sophia Grojsman created perfumes like a cubist painter, that cherry blossom flowers taste of roasted almonds, and that lighting an incense stick made the heart of one Japanese court lady skip a beat. Bois de Jasmin assumed a life of its own and grew a diverse and loyal following.  I eventually left academia, obtained professional perfumery training and began my current work of research, teaching and journalism.

When I think of these 12 years and what they mean to me, I realize that a few themes stand out. I don’t offer it as advice on blogging, since there is no one right way to approach it. Rather, it’s a list of learnings that helped me maintain Bois de Jasmin. Bois de Jasmin continues to evolve as my inspiration board, and because of the contributions others have made to it, from Elisa, Patricia, Andy, all of the guest authors, and of course, all of you who read and comment, it’s much more than just my private blog. It’s a collage of our discoveries, passions and experiences. Thank you for taking the journey along with me.

For the Love of It

The value of blogging is generally measured by the ad earnings one gets, the number of views, clicks, link backs, and other such minutia. Yet, the most rewarding projects are the ones driven by curiosity and passion. Bois de Jasmin is a record of my discoveries, whether they touch perfume, history, books, chemistry, memories or politics (yes, a political scientist is always a political scientist).  In my recommendation to focus on your personal passions and interests, I’m being entirely pragmatic. Writing takes a great deal of effort, and unless you can find the right motivation, maintaining even the most relevant and SEO optimized blog will end up feeling like a chore. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Whatever topic you write about, write for the love of it.

A Room of Your Own

A blog is a liminal zone, someplace between public and private, but it’s essential to keep a true private space, your own room, metaphorically speaking, where you can daydream and reflect. Shut off the computer. Wander around the city looking for blooming plants, striking buildings, cats in the windows. Carve out an hour to read for pleasure. Don’t sacrifice this time for something seemingly “more productive,” because creativity requires such moments. Staying sane requires such moments.

Beauty in Details

Small things can be a rich source of pleasure–the pattern of shadows on the pavement, a poem, the taste of the season’s first strawberries, the scent of a used book shop. Noticing and remembering such details is like having a never-ending reservoir of small joys, and for a writer, a source of great ideas. Don’t be afraid to admire old-fashioned things. There is an emphasis on newness in the blogosphere, which is why a reminder of the classics can be such a salutary influence.

Confidence and Boundaries

Writing is a vulnerable act revealing one’s emotions, thoughts, and personality traits. People choose to interpret one’s words in their own fashion, sometimes with negative results. Any writer will be familiar with situations when others define you, criticize you or offer advice. Accept the constructive criticism, but jettison the rest. Give people the benefit of the doubt, but don’t allow others to use your blog as a place to discharge their negativity. Don’t write for approval. Don’t be afraid to change your opinion. Allow yourself as much freedom as possible when you write.

Patience

Blogging is a paradox–publishing an article takes a few moments, but finding your audience takes time.  Being patient will be easier if you’re writing about topics that excite you. Follow your own course and don’t compare yourself to others. Creative pursuits take time. Make sure you find the topic and approach that will make blogging enjoyable.

Pause

Taking a break is important. Put your blog on pause, retreat into your private space (see above), rest. You’ll return with new ideas and fresh enthusiasm. Banish any feelings of guilt associated with the blog.

Credit

Finally, an important point for all writers. Offer credit when using the work of others. Online, it’s as easy as putting a hyperlink. I found that the most egregious instances of my work being used without attribution were committed by people who were insecure about their expertise. Attribution is not a zero sum game, quite the contrary. Citing someone may lead to a new interesting encounter as well as future collaborations. Why pass up such a good chance? One might as well use the world wide web for making new connections.

Thank you for all of you, my readers. A special thank you to my fellow bloggers. The warmth and generosity of this community has few equals.

  • Austenfan: Many valid points and congratulations! 12 years already. I think I started reading BdJ in 2008, and it’s still one of the blogs that I check daily.

Your comment about creativity resonated with me especially. First because I feel that people allow themselves far too little time to be bored and boring, and I’m convinced it is a necessity to us to not always be busy and online. Secondly it reminded my of what John Cleese once said about it. Apparently he has lectured on the subject quite a bit.

He says it most succinctly here:

    • Victoria: Thank you for the link. How do I love John Cleese, and I can’t agree more. In fact, my rule for the past year or so has been to turn off wi-fi for at least half of the day, usually in the morning and keep as my own time to work, think, read, etc. Dolce far niente, time spent doing nothing, is essential for creativity.

It’s getting warmer, but I look forward to the evenings of sitting in the garden and watching the stars lighting up in the skies. May 15, 2017 at 1:14pm Reply

    • Victoria: Thank you for your kind words, Tara. Anytime you feel that your blog is limiting your expression, your creativity, because you’ve chosen one topic, it would be hard to maintain it. One may enjoy perfume, but many other things also inspire and thrill, and why should one not talk about them too. At some point I realized that the very reason perfume fascinated me was because it touched upon science, fashion, art, creativity, and that sharing whatever I discovered made me happy. One shouldn’t be afraid to evolve.

Finally, taking a break is essential, so no need to feel guilty. May 15, 2017 at 1:27pm Reply

My obsession, too. We are not scent twins, but I pay careful attention to the way you read a perfume. Your way of noticing and explaining has taught me much. So much sound advice and wisdom for anyone involved in a creative venture. I loved all your points, and could do with putting them into practice far more than I do, especially the ones covered by Confidence & Boundaries, Patience and Pause. ‘Beauty in Details’ also resonated with me, and reminded me of Flaubert kneading mud into gold. Shame that it has become more difficult to carve out a quiet space for creative contemplation. Loved that John Cleese video too – anxiety and interruptions are the curse of the modern world.

    • Victoria: A couple of years ago there was a great article in the Economist about the lack of time, and it quoted a poet deploring the same phenomenon a couple of centuries ago. So, not quite a new problem. The main issue is that we are expected to always be productive, and it’s easy to feel guilty if one is not doing any that has a clearly defined goal. That being said, creativity needs these moments of stillness. My goal tomorrow is to find some time to sit under the lilacs. It’s such a beautiful season here.

Thank you very much, Vanessa. Congratulations also on keeping your blog for all of these years. Your sense of humor and reflections on perfume and life in general are its defining traits. And Truffle, of course! May 15, 2017 at 2:41pm Reply

I like what you say about don’t write for the approval of others. I have a culinary blog, and the other day I posted a beef tongue recipe (yikes!). One of my friends half joked that aren’t I afraid of scaring off half my readers? But because I’ve never pretended to be vegan, whole food etc. i.e. I don’t write for the approval of others. PS and the tongue was a hit!

Not only it is unique, it is – in every detail- uniquely beautiful, and in Keats words, “a thing of beauty is a joy forever.” May 15, 2017 at 3:10pm Reply

    • Victoria: Thank you very much, Alicia, for all of your reflections and observations. By the way, thank you again for recommending The Ornament of the World by Maria Rosa Menocal. It’s such a marvelous book. Medieval Iberia: Readings from Christian, Muslim, and Jewish Sources by Olivia Remie Constable also came up when I was searching for other writings on the same topic, but I haven’t started it yet. • Alicia: Victoria, I haven’t read Medieval Iberia, and It will take me some time to do so. At the moment and for a while I am involved in Renaissance poetry and Virgil, and have to complete my writing by July. Please let me know what you think of Medieval Iberia. No land in Europe knew the coexistence of three cultures with different religions as Spain did. It is fascinating. “The Ornament of the World” is a jewel. I am a good friend of the author, a warm, lovely person. I hope some day you find time to visit Spain, particularly Toledo, Cordoba and Granada with its fairytale Alhambra and the incessant music of fountains among carnations and myrtles. A place like no other in the world. And then you will write a post about the scents of Al Andalus, of Albeniz and Falla’s music, of García Lorca’s poetry, and perhaps of that ancient delight, “The Dove’s necklace”, Ibn Hazm’s treatise on love which might have inspired the troubadours. May 15, 2017 at 4:53pm Reply

        • Victoria: Yes, that’s the trip I especially want to make, and I hope that it can happen soon. You named all of the things I love, although I’m little familiar with Albeniz (all the more reasons to change that!) Garcia Lorca’s poetry is exquisite.

          • Alicia: A very great poet, from Granada. Perhaps you have read Ian Gibson’s biography of Lorca. If you didn’t, and are interested in doing so, it is by far the best. May 16, 2017 at 11:37am Reply

            • Victoria: I was planning to add it to my list, but I just found a secondhand copy that I couldn’t resist. All of your book recommendations have been great. I also liked Moser’s biography of Clarice Lispector. The Passion According to G.H. was her first work I’ve read, and it as a perfect introduction. May 17, 2017 at 2:32pm Reply

Also, thanks for opening a cultural, artistic and culinary windows to regions like Ukraine, Iran, India, or Japan. It is so important to be reminded regularly that there is far more than our own (Western) eurocentric reality! May 15, 2017 at 4:55pm Reply

The John Cleese clip is so cute, funny, and true. As an artist with an academic (but very creative daughter) frequently surrounded by those who judge success in more linear terms, it is a familiar topic!

The care you take in everything you do is evident. Thank you! May 15, 2017 at 9:25pm Reply

    • Victoria: Good luck to your daughter! It’s true that success is defined all too simplistically, and the academia can be rigid when it comes to the advancement and career progression. What I love is the depth and substance of this blog, and how it weaves together all those disparate elements and sensual pleasures that relate to fragrance…….nature, culture, history and tea, to name but a few off the top of my head. That’s why I love this subject so much, it sits in a sweet spot between all my other interests; reading this blog brought that home to me and now I’m endlessly fascinated! • Lydia: Dear Victoria,

    Congratulations!

I am so glad you decided to begin writing this blog. It is a such source of inspiration and delight for me. From the in-depth descriptions and investigations of perfumes, to the stories of your family and your travels, to the book posts, to the recipes, to the beautiful photographs, all of it is a delight. There’s never a time I read a post and don’t come away from it wanting to learn more and explore more beauty in the world.

I must admit that I hope that your journey will eventually lead you to writing a book. The idea comes partly from anxiety that your blog will someday disappear like so many other blogs I’ve loved, partly from a desire to have something tangible on my bookshelf that I can refer to, fill with bookmarks identifying favorite passages, and give to friends.

Thank you for your generous spirit in all that you share with your readers. May 16, 2017 at 9:35pm Reply

    • Victoria: Thank you, Kay!

I’ll point out that I do use the Google ads, but they’re driven by the keywords and I don’t select them. The proceeds cover the hosting fees of the blog, which at this point are considerable. On the other hand, I do want to keep ads minimal, because monetizing Bois de Jasmin would change its ethos and direction too much. I don’t feel comfortable with that. My blog gives me plenty of satisfaction and rewards as it. Not everything has to be about money. May 18, 2017 at 6:21am Reply

  • Karen 5.0: Victoria, happy 12th! I couldn’t agree with you more about blogging – I started my culture and travel blog, Karen 5.0 (http://wwwkmw.blogspot.com/), eight years ago when I was living in NYC. I maintained it after I left in Berlin, then Chicago, then Europe, China, and now back in the States. It is wonderful that you can “take” it with you wherever you go. Writing about culture and travel helps clarify my thoughts, reveals what I really think and allows me to connect with people from all over.

I don’t have the readership you do and I have not made any attempt to monetize my blog, but have found that posting something a few times a month (used to be nearly daily) gets the ideas out of my head and into the world. And this has been enough for me. Thanks for your blog~ May 18, 2017 at 9:38am Reply

    • Victoria: Thank you, Karen. I’ve stopped by your blog before, and it’s a beautiful space. I’m also reading Adam Zagajewski’s collection of essays, Slight Exaggeration, by the way.

You’re right, the best part of a blog is that it evolves along with you. You can take it anywhere, but it won’t remain the same. And that’s the best part. May 18, 2017 at 10:16am Reply

      • Karen 5.0: Oh I’m so pleased you’re reading Zagajewski! He is a beautiful writer, like Sebald and other authors/poets who are able to immediately create a mood that puts one in a slightly-dreamy state of mind that takes a while to come out of, not that one would want to 🙂 Let me know how you like the book.

And thank you for your kind words. I have recently changed the style and design of my blog; readers now have the choice to view the articles in magazine, snapshot, or flipcard formats. Call it spring cleaning, or maybe spring reawakening! 🙂 May 18, 2017 at 10:34am Reply

Maria Novello) I always come here to see what you think On any new scent discovery I find , that is drawing me in. I have been a passionate lover of perfumes all my life, with no waning in sight, and your place has been a wonderful companion and guide on my journey that I find hard to describe. It is at once a reference , a place ,a rest stop, and a source of creativity and inspiration for all the elusive exquisite joy that comes from perfumes ! I envy you your vocation and am so thankful that you continued to pursue your passion. Thank you Victoria and to the whole Bois de Jasmin team ! July 11, 2017 at 10:12am Reply

  • Marika: Hi Victoria, just passed by and realized that it is 12 years now! I’ve been constantly enjoying your blog in these years but never posted comments as I felt that you would consider them as “promotional” to my blog. I may quote everything you wrote, especially “Don’t write for approval. Don’t be afraid to change your opinion.”. I’ve been blogging on perfume for ten years now, and even if it has been difficult and time consuming, I’ve loved every year. Because I did it for myself, the rewards have been enormous and life-changing. So… keep up with your fantastic writing and thanks for all the inspiration you gave me in these years! • ClareObscure: Hello Victoria,
I am delighted to be commenting again after an absence which was exacerbated by some technology issues…ah, the bitter sweet learning curve of a granny who gets overwhelmed by computers.
Rest assured that I’m still as excited as I ever have been, with the fascinating world of fragrance.
Your articles always stimulate, Victoria. I love that food, literature & the arts are included.
This article is so inspiring & made me feel the warmth of the festive season. Woven into your clever & clear writing style, is a generosity in sharing the pitfalls & the joys of presenting & maintaining a successful blog site. Thanks for the sense of balance which permeates your articles & keeps us returning for another reassuring read.
I want to wish you, and my fellow fans of this site, a happy, relaxing Christmas and a positive, fragrant & hopeful 2018. December 21, 2017 at 12:28pm Reply

  • Clare Obsure: Thank you, Victoria, for this utterly delightful article, reminiscing on 12 years of Bois de Jasmine. Your lightness of touch, range of inspiring topics, superb writing standard & friendly personal replies; all contribute to a blog that educates, entertains and above all, keeps discerning fans coming back for more. I join others in saluting your achievement with this venture. Long may it continue. November 4, 2019 at 6:13pm Reply

  • Debra L DiPrimio: I am 66 and have always loved perfume since my gramps use to dab White Shoulders behind my ears as a child. I currently am loving Jo Malone and the mixing of scents. However, I find my heart longing for a college favorite. HOPE by Francis Denney, it was never very expensive but had a fragrance so soft and beautiful it was haunting. Is there anything out there now similar? Thank you! December 19, 2020 at 9:46pm Reply

    • Tourmaline: Hi Debra,

Welcome to Bois de Jasmin! It’s a wonderful website, and Victoria is a knowledgeable and generous guide through the world of perfume and related topics.

I love White Shoulders. I first discovered it when a colleague gave me a dab-on bottle of it for my birthday about 30 years ago.

At thefragrancefactory.com there are currently a few Hope products available for sale. There are two bottles of cologne, two jars of body cream and one tub of bath powder.

As you probably know, there is nothing on eBay at the moment.

You can read a little about Hope on Fragrantica by clicking on the following link.

If you are seeking a fragrance, in future it would be a good idea to post your question on the “Recommend Me a Perfume” post, which is shared monthly. The last one was on 30 November, so the next one should appear in just over a week.

I hope you find what you are looking for.

      With kind regards,
